ATTENTION WARM-UP – EXHAUSTION OF THE WILL – SUBMISSIVENESS. MECHANISMS OF MIND ADAPTATION TO COGNITIVE EFFORT

ROZGRZEWANIE UWAGI – WYCZERPYWANIE WOLI – ULEGŁOŚĆ. MECHANIZMY ADAPTACJI UMYSŁU DO WYSIŁKU POZNAWCZEGO

Author(s): Sławomir Śpiewak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: attention warm-up; exhaustion of the will; submissiveness

(…) W poszczególnych częściach monografii Sławomir Śpiewak przedstawia kolejno takie zagadnienia, jak: charakterystyka wysiłkowych procesów mentalnych z perspektywy właściwości systemu przetwarzania informacji, wysiłkowe uwarunkowania możliwości sprawowania kontroli nad kilkoma (…) czynnościami jednocześnie, oraz wysiłkowe uwarunkowania sprawności przetwarzania informacji z punktu widzenia czasowej dynamiki aktywności poznawczej… Gruntowna znajomość klasycznie rozumianej psychologii poznawczej z jednej strony i psychologii społecznej – z drugiej, czyni go prawdziwym ekspertem w obszarze social cognition. Potrafi on bowiem „odróżnić ziarno od plew”.

The Anatomy of Intercultural Encounters. A Cross-Cultural Sociolinguistic Study

Author(s): Grażyna Kiliańska-Przybyło / Language(s): English

Keywords: intercultural encounters; intercultural competence; personal narrations; critical events; linguistic consciousness; intercultural communication

We live in a time when a contact (personal or virtual) with foreigners is inevitable. The present publication focuses on the characteristics of intercultural encounters, interactions that hold among the participants of such encounters, as well as on discussing the factors which play an important role during intercultural communication. The intercultural encounters have been discussed from two points of view, theoretical and personal, taking into account the experiences of students of English philology of Polish and Turkish descent. On the one hand, the publication informs of the specificity of intercultural contacts and allows to observe the mechanisms that develop during such meetings; on the other hand, it functions as a source material in the form of personal reflections of the subjects, stories and anecdotes related to intercultural communication. Therefore, the book is addressed both at students, travellers and persons who frequently communicate with foreigners, as well as at teachers or persons engaged in intercultural training courses.

Author(s): Amel Alić,Haris Cerić,Sedin Habibović / Language(s): Bosnian

Keywords: intercultural education; culturally sensitive pedagogy; acculturation; socialization;social distance;

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, research publications of this kind are rare, that is why this study, particularly its quality, extensiveness and comprehensiveness in analyzing the observed problem, does not only fill the void in the field of scientific studies, but was published both in the local and in English language, thus attracting the attention of researchers in this field to the methodology, instruments and key findings of this study and perhaps inspire them to conduct similar researches. The authors have managed to explore and prove that UWC Mostar, compared to other schools, manages to develop intercultural education, practice the environment culturally sensitive pedagogy, offer students best education that will prepare them for their studies and enrich them with life skills and finally, help them navigate in new cultures with people of different cultural experiences and traditions. The study describes exceptional voluntarism of the school community, which is a generally underdeveloped and unknown concept in local communities and school curricula. This is an exceptionally valuable study, as it presents findings that describe UWC Mostar’s unique role and engagement as a multicultural educational institution in a city that, despite all the positive elements recognized by individuals and institutions, still mostly fails to get to know UWC Mostar better, accept its real values and provide for an environment where these values could be applied to local schools and institutions working with young people and enable UWC Mostar achieve a wider and more complete community impact.

Reputation and crisis management - determinants of the organization's strategy

Reputacja a działania informacyjne organizacji w sytuacjach kryzysowych i determinanty ich wyboru

Author(s): Waldemar Rydzak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: reputacja;zaufanie;reputation;trust;ekonomia informacji;crisis management;crisis communication;komunikacja kryzysowa;

Leaving One’s Comfort Zone. The Story of a Move to Italy

Author(s): Gökhan Kutluer / Language(s): English

Keywords: biography; Gökhan Kutluer; Italy; leaving comfort; migration; professional; Transnational lives; Turkey;

“Any settlers in the family?” “You don’t look Turkish at all, are you an émigré?” “Where are you originally from?” From an early age, I started hearing these questions. Either in school, during a cab ride, in the office or in my new social circles. I face these questions right after we start chatting… and this happens often. I always expect it. “Gökhan, where are you from?” I evolved: my height, my features, my voice, my gestures, the way I think, and many more but the answer to this question has never changed: “My ancestors used to live in Greece. They were there for a few generations. With the convention concerning population exchange between Turkey and Greece, my ancestors moved here permanently.” What I kept hearing on the grapevine eventually became a solid truth. I came to grasp the fact that my ancestors lived in Drama, Ptolemaida and Eleftheroupoli in Greece. All this longing to flee from my homeland and desire to get to know other places would clearly relate to a genetic interpretation. However, I still couldn’t say it all fit.

Bottom-up Linguistics: Perspectives and Explorations with a Postscript on Language and Reality

Author(s): Paul Rastall / Language(s): English

Keywords: linguistics; language; analysis; linguistic units; bottom-up approach;

Bottom-up Linguistics offers an alternative to most mainstream views of language and linguistic analysis. The approach involves seeing linguistic units and relations in their multi-dimensional diversity, and as adaptations to communicational need and for the construction of verbal reality. Generalisations are built up from observations, and diversity within and between languages is respected. Both information and signal properties of speech are considered.

Sensitive strings of personality in romantic relationships

Wrażliwe struny osobowości w związkach romantycznych

Author(s): Marcin Moroń / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: reinforcement sensitivity theory; romantic relationships; interpersonal transgression

The aim of the book is to establish the role of temperamental sensitivity to pleasant and unpleasant stimuli in understanding the dynamics of responding to transgressions in romantic relationships. Using the neuropsychological reinforcement sensitivity theory of personality, there have been shown mechanisms of constructive and destructive reaction in the event of a breach of norms regulating mutual exchange by an intimate relationship partner. The analyses have demonstrated that sensitivity to negative stimuli and to motivational conflicts are the risk factors of avoidance and neglect of a romantic partner, and also revealed the mechanisms of this risk (e.g. difficulties in emotional regulation, reduced self-esteem and sensitivity to rewards and punishments in a romantic relationship).

Various Dimensions of Place in Language Studies

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: contrastive linguistics; place; conceptualisation; pragmatics;language contact;

The book serves as a collection of articles concerning different approaches to the notion of ‘place’ in terms of contrastive studies. Out of eight articles, the first four concentrate on the place of conceptualization in languages. Next two contributions discuss the notion of ‘place’ from a more literal point of view, concentrating on the role of case and prepositional systems in the expression of place as well as on the concept of place from the pragmatic point of view, as discursive representation of places in Polish and American cultures is analysed. The third part of the book contains two articles focusing on language contact. Each of the above-mentioned contributions provides an inspiring approach to contrastive studies and further research.

The Teacher (Not) Supporting the Pupil – the Importance of Teachers’ Social Competences

Nauczyciel-wychowawca (nie)wspierający ucznia – o znaczeniu nauczycielskich kompetencji społecznych

Author(s): Magdalena Piorunek / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: teacher-educator; student’s support; communication with students; teacher’s social competencies

The monograph considers a particular role for form teachers that extends beyond strictly didactic activities and involves their relationships with students, in which teachers support their students and help them handle stressful and difficult situations, and also facilitate decision-making processes. To be able to meet these requirements, teachers should be mindful and know their students' needs, whether educational or related to their lives; they should be ready to act and apply varied and relevant support strategies based on effective communication with children and adolescents, which requires well developed social competencies that can be used to provide support to students. The research findings presented in the monograph (and obtained using various research paradigms) have numerous research “approaches” as their background. These results show the (non)supportive roles performed by form teachers, taking account of their social competencies, as seen from the perspectives of students and teachers alike. The major objective of this discussion is to present the help and support processes developed by a form teacher for students in the school environment. This publication was written for both theorists in the field of education, in such subdisciplines of educational studies as counselling, school pedagogy, pedeutology, and also for practitioners who decide on how the form schooling takes and how it developes, but first and foremost, it was written for all teachers themselves.

The experience of cancer

Doświadczanie choroby nowotworowej

Author(s): Natalia Ulaniecka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: cancer; cancer patients; social functioning; needs of cancer patients; problems of cancer patients; interpersonal relations; family; hospital; social support

Cancer is becoming an ever greater problem, not only for individual health, but also for society as a whole. Statistics show that more and more people are experiencing the oncological illness. This serious, potentially fatal disease undeniably affects life and functioning, not only in the physical aspect, but also in the psychological and social, the latter being a dimension which often seems to be overlooked in discourse on this problem. In the case of oncological diseases, the treatment of which in many cases is radical and where the disease itself has particular social significance, this impact is especially significant. Thus, a large and extremely important niche appears in the area of scientific and practical interest concerning support for the quality of life and everyday functioning of those with oncological diseases. Referring to theory and the results of her own research (based on interviews with cancer patients and specialists), the author describes extremely important aspects of living with and alongside cancer. She addresses issues related to family functioning, social functioning and functioning as a patient. This book aims to familiarise readers with the specific difficulties experienced by those suffering from cancer as well as their needs related to this illness. This may be the first step towards greater understanding and support for people coping with cancer.

Keywords: komunikacja międzykulturowa; wielojęzyczność; język lokalny; język angielski; lingua franca; wywiad narracyjny
