The Athenian orator Hyperides of Kollytos (389–322 BC) was considered by ancient critics as second to none other than Demosthenes himself, and in many respects even praised as his superior. His work, however, suffered a very different fortune: his speeches all lost, for a long time he was known only from a handful of fragments quoted by ancient and Byzantine authors. The 19‑th century, however, brought about a series of astounding papyrological discoveries, which, among other things, gave us six of his speeches, preserved in considerable portions, and in one case, in its entirety. These are: 1. Against Demosthenes; 2. Indefence of Lycophron; 3. In defence of Euxenippus; 4. Against Philippides; 5. Against Athenogenes; 6. Funeral oration. The first decade of the 21‑st century saw another major discovery, which brought to light substantial fragments of two other speeches, Against Diondas and Against Timandrus. The present volume provides the first Polish translation of all these texts, followed by a selection of culturally and historically significant fragments.While doing full justice to the high opinion the ancient critics had of Hyperides, this relativelymodest (he is said to have composed seventy two speeches in total) anthology also providesthe modern reader with a unique glimpse into Athenian politics, institutions and mores in theperiod which followed the defeat at Chaeronea (338 BC). This book aims therefore not onlyat offering an accessible translation of Hyperides’ work, but also seeks to flesh out variousquestions and problems raised by these texts (too frequently preserved in a far‑from‑perfectcondition). Its main concern lies in political, social and cultural history, prosopography, andmost importantly – since with only one exception we are dealing here with forensic speeches – Athenian law and its vagaries. The entire corpus of Hyperides’ translated work is prefaced with general introduction which deals with political events in Athens and Greece after Chaeronea, with the biographical tradition of Hyperides, and finally with selected issues in Athenian legal history. Each of the translated speeches and fragments is in addition accompanied with a generous commentary and a detailed introduction, which aims to provide specific background to the case from which the text takes its origin.

Dissemination of Scientific Research Results in International Databases. A Bibliometric Analysis Based on the Example of Technical Sciences with Special Regard to Electrotechnics

The issues of bibliometrics, scientometrics, informetrics and webometrics have an important place among research subject undertaken by Polish and foreign scholars. Initially,these notions were used only by researchers in the fields of library science, scientometricsand information science. However, at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, quantitativemethods became a fundamental tool for evaluation of, among others, sources of academiccommunication, academic research, research and academic centers. One of the elements ofthe evaluation is a quantitative analysis of academic publications in databases with international access. It is of particular importance in the case of technical sciences. This work is an attempt at a quantitative analysis of publications by Polish authors (affiliated to Polishtechnical universities) and Polish journals on electrotechnics in international databases. Thecontents are organized into four chapters with an introduction, conclusions, bibliography,name index and a list of figures and illustrations. Chapters one and two are devoted totheoretical issues, whereas chapters three and four – to practical issues.In the first chapter, selected issues concerning quantitative methods were presented, including an analysis of literature and a discussion over terminology carried out in book publications and journals. Moreover, selected examples of research conducted with the use of quantitative methods (including rankings and scientific reports) were discussed in this chapter). In chapter two, sources of information on academic publications, their origins and development (from bibliographic bases to citation indexes) were presented. A separate subchapter was devoted to databases of academic publications created by libraries of technical universities, and to indicators in the assessment of academic publications. Chapter three deals with electrotechnics as a field of science. An analysis was conducted with regard to the place of electrotechnics in science classifications based on selected examples, and the development of the teaching of electrotechnics at university level was shown. In this chapter, early and contemporary Polish journals on electrotechnics were presented, including journals published by technical universities themselves. Chapter four contains the results of an analysis of international databases (Scopus, WoS, CC), focusing on the representation of Polish journals, including their citations, and publications of authors with affiliation to Polish technical universities. Final conclusions of research and analyses have brought an answer to questions raised with regard to the assessment of representation in international databases of publications by Polish authors affiliated to Polish technical universities (in its various aspects, e.g., a publication type, language of publication, publication dynamics taking into account years of publications, cooperation with representatives of other European and non-European countries), and of Polish journals.

Teacher in the School Environment: A Reflection on Pierre Bourdieu’s Theories and Teacher Narratives

The monograph constitutes an attempt at providing a teacher’s perspective on their work environment. Due to my interest in identifying how – and where – teachers see themselves within the school environment, I decided to provide them with an opportunity to speak for themselves and, through personal interviews, study the everyday challenges of their profession. The possibility to access first‑hand accounts of the professional experiences of teachers has allowed me to gain deeper insight into their work environment. Moreover, it has allowed me to look as if through their eyes at both the people and situations they encounter, and their own initiatives, as well as the standards according to which they operate. In addition, it has enabled me to recognise the meanings which they assign to everyday occurrences, processes and structures of their professional life.On the other hand, Pierre Bourdieu’s theories shed a different light on the study of the teacher’s place in the school life. Those theories, in turn, serve as the methodological basis forthe analysis of the teachers’ experiences. The application of that theoretical framework, however, differs from its use in quantitative research projects and does not consist in empirical verification of the assumed theoretical model. Instead, chosen concepts derived from Bourdieu’s conceptual apparatus allowed me to describe and interpret the meanings which teachers assign to their experiences in the school environment.In the opening part of the book, I present the macrosocial conditions regarding the teachingprofession, including both the national tendencies to politicise the school environment, aswell as the global trends manifesting in – often covert – attempts at construing it as a sphereof neoliberal influence. Further, I introduce the theoretical background utilised in order to interpret the results of the study, and elaborate on selected Polish research studies on the nature of pedagogy, using Bourdieu’s theories.Moreover, the monograph includes an overview of my own methodological perspectiveon my research concerning teachers in the school environment. This includes: a discussionregarding the subject of the study and my interpretative stance; an outline of aims and selected problem areas; an overview of data gathering, including interview procedures; a characteristic of the research subjects; and, finally, an overview of the applied strategies for working with the empirical research material and the use of analytical tools.In the following parts of the book, I analyse and interpret my research results, which includes:1) a description of the habitus revealed by the teachers, showing the way in which theyinform the teacher’s perception and everyday professional functioning; 2) a reading of the school as a place of reproduction and symbolic violation, resulting from the factual inequality among the students maintained under the guise of official and formal equality, as well as revealing certain mechanisms of reproduction functioning in the school environment, which – according to Bourdieu – result in the capital following the capital, allowing the social structure to remain unchallenged; 3) a discussion of the symbolic violence of the school environment (owing to the description of sources cited by the teachers and the forms of symbolic violation which emerge in the school environment); 4) a description of the teachers’ strategies of surviving in the school environment – since it appears that the subjects engaged in play make efforts designed to maintain the subjects’ positions within the environment, using strategies which, in their understanding, will enable them to retain their status. The subjects engage in those actions according to their habitus, which allow them to find their place within the school structures and enable them to utilise generally acknowledged practices and procedures in the process of developing strategies.

The volume consists of materials deposited in the ARG by Emmanuel Ringelblum’s closest collaborators: writer and journalist Rachela Auerbach, lawyer and economist Hersz Wasser, teacher Eliasz Gutkowski, and the Archive’s treasurer, entrepreneur Menachem Mendel Kon. Letters, certificates and fragments of notes are testimony to the work of the Archive, the everyday life of its collaborators and through this – to the experience of Jewish intellectuals in the ghetto. The last chapter contains patents of inventors Henryk Piórnik and Wacław Kączkowski issued by the Polish and foreign patent offices.

The volume contains the clandestine publications of Poale’ Zion Left and Poale’ Zion Right. This press almost entirely belongs to the propaganda-political type of publications. It covers three basic segments: war communications, texts concerning the present situation of the Jewish population and historical-ideological essays. All data are interpreted most often through the socialist-Zionist doctrine. The most detailed are articles on the Warsaw Ghetto. However the majority of space was devoted to reports from Palestine and visions of the post-war Jewish future. There are also extensive texts on Jewish and universal history and culture.

William ShakespeareThe first volume of the electronic publication is part of the digital repository Polski Szekspir UW (http://polskiszekspir.uw.edu.pl) which provides access to all Polish 19th-century Shakespeare translations as well as to case studies reconstructing their origin and reception.The book offers a comprehensive account of the history of the Polish translations of Shakespeare’s plays in the 19th century and consists of 27 chapters focused on individual translation endeavors viewed with regard to translation strategy, biographical context and critical reception. The authors study the dynamics and complexity of broadly understood assimilation processes of foreign literature into a national culture, with special emphasis on the evolution of literary tastes, conventions and theatrical needs. The book also offers an updated account of the Polish translation resources, invites extensive comparative analyses and positions Polish reception against pan-European trends. This refers in particular to the relation between literary criticism and translation practices, the shaping pressure of literary and staging conventions, the specificity of individual translator strategies and mechanisms governing the canonization of literature in translation.

The book Old-Polish Women of Power in Polish Historiography of the Annexation Period contains the analysis on how the historians working in the years 1795–1918 displayed Polish female rulers, i.e. queens, princesses, wives and mothers of monarchs living from the beginning of the Polish state to the fall of the First Polish Republic. It shows how the women of power were evaluated by 19th century historians and what influenced their opinion. Ewa Janeczek-Jabłońska has analysed historical syntheses, articles and books written in the late Enlightenment, Romanticism, Positivism and Young Poland. Overall 12 historical syntheses and over 350 articles have been included in the research. Most numerous works on women of power were published in Romanticism. It matches the spiritual atmosphere of this culture formation. The portraits of women were enriched compared to the Enlightenment period. In historical writings of Romanticism wives of the Jagiellonian dynasty rulers were presented most often. In Positivism, more attention was paid to women of power from the Piast period who started getting more positive assessment. In the entire post-Partition historiography most works were devoted to Jadwiga of Poland, Marie Casimire d’Arquien and Barbara Radziwiłł. These three extremely different personalities show us the diversity of interests of the 19th century historians. The historians’ favorite women characters were usually saints or rulers of passionate and strong personality who had some influence on political events. There were substantial limitations of women’s influence on governing the country in the Old-Polish period. Ambitious female rulers who tried to influence public affairs were treated with reluctance by the Polish people. In over one hundred years of national servitude changes in the situation of Polish women occurred: they became more independent, the level of education of women raised. Nevertheless, the role models created by historians generally remained unchanged. The destiny of a woman had always been viewed in terms of being a mother, a good wife subservient to her husband. In historiography of Positivism and Young Poland, the revision in presentation of some women of power occurred, e.g. with regard to Bona or Richeza of Lotharingia. However, the general trends in assessment of spouses and mothers of Polish monarchs remain almost constant. Some Polish princesses and queens had their share in public life. They governed the country in the name of their children, led mediatory missions. A special role in the state was played by those ambitious women who had a husband under their command by either taking advantage of his weak character (Bona, Maria Louisa), or his feelings (e.g. Marie Casimire).

The main aim of this book is to analyse and interpret relations between community and literature in Morcinek’s works, for example, the ideology of implication, symbolic representations and delimitation of creative freedom. The second goal is to distinguish fantasies, traumas and obsession presented in Morcinek’s novels. Last but not least, Mikołajec describes the comparatistic project of the new community, which is based on regional universalism. The studies feature thematic arrangement. To reconsider the work of Gustaw Morcinek, the researcher engages methodologies, concepts and ideas proposed by Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Louis Althusser, Pierre Bourdieu, Eric Hobsbawm, Jacques Lacan, Peter Sloterdijk, Jacques Derrida, Walter Benjamin and Carlos Paris. Thus, Mikołajec confronts Morcinek’s works with ideas that are beyond the literary criticism created by the native context of interpretation of this naïve, folk and mining-district writer. In addition to the analysis, interpretations and comments on Morcinek’s prose, Mikołajec reaches for other artists, who help us to see the discussed issues and topics in a broader context. Community and Literature. Studies in the prose of Morcinek by Marek Mikołajec corresponds with the current research trend, whose main goal is to re-read canonical writers, who are generally recognized as well-known but in fact remain undiscovered.

According to thucydides. Reflections of a sociologist of literature on history of the peloponnesian war

The presented work is an attempt to look at Thucydides’s History of the Pelo¬ponnesian War from a very special point of view — from the perspective of a so¬ciologist of literature. Such a monograph can be imagined in several ways. In the variant proposed here, it tries to be, on the one hand, a sociological (not military, but indeed a sociological) reconstruction of a model of the internally and exter¬nally conflicted world of Greek polis, just as it is presented along with its prob¬lems by the Athenian historian, and on the other hand, a very personal study of the reading of Thucydides’ work. The combination of both tasks compels the au¬thor to create an amalgam of an analysis, interpretation, quasi-guide to the His¬tory of the Peloponnesian War and essay (but in an academic, non-literary sense). The author also intends this work to indicate the contexts in which Thucydides’s work can be interpreted in a broader way since for the sociologist of literature it is a bit different than from that of a historian, political scientist, political philoso¬pher or specialist in the theory of international political relations.

Teacher and Pupil. Theory and Practice of Reception and Transmission of Information in Early School Education Grades 1–3

The publication concerns the subject of teacher-students communication in the context of the educational process in the early grades of primary school. In chapter one, the issues of information and knowledge were addressed with regard to their transmission and reception from the sender to the recipient, including the context of an educational process. The activities and actions undertaken by a teacher working with students in grades 1 through 3 were presented. From this perspective, the communicative competence of the teacher was analyzed as a main factor in the whole communication process in the classroom.In chapter two, the most relevant linguistic and philosophical aspects related to the subject were discussed. The focus was on the fundamental types, characteristics and functions of utterances. A variety of questions and statements that could be formulated by children in grades 1–3 was characterized. A typology of these utterances was proposed in the context of representative literature on the subject.In chapter three, research issues were outlined. The subject of research, its goals (theoretical and practical), and research problems were discussed. Three strategies along with methods, techniques, and tools applied for the purpose of the author’s own research were presented. The theoretical aim of this (diagnostic) research was to recognize essential questions and statements uttered by students of early school age, shaping the educational process. The practical aim was related to the search for innovative and valuable strategies and methods – the entire concept of the training of students of pedagogy to become early school education teachers. The main research problem concerned specifically the role of students’ questions and statements in the educational process in grades 1–3.The results of research were illustrated in tables and charts, and a non-stereotypical quantitative-qualitative analysis regarding the reception and transmission of information between a teacher and students was proposed to describe daily schoolwork. A novelty is a multilevel analysis of the communicative acts initiated by students and their continuation or lack of continuation according to the teacher’s decisions, and a development of different communication models based on this.In chapter four, conclusions, certain generalizations, and postulates were proposed, as well as an attempt to develop innovative components in the training of early school education teachers. In the final chapter of the book, chapter five, questions and statements of early primary grade students (grades 1–3) that were asked and formulated in a specific educational context were gathered, along with teachers’ replies to these questions and statements.The lists of students’ questions and statements can be used as source materials by academic teachers in educating pedagogy students – future early school education teachers. They can also be useful in preparing all kinds of research papers (for instance diploma dissertations, M.A. theses, and others).In conclusion, numerous findings and postulates were formulated, which contributed to the development of the author’s original conception of the training of early school education teachers. The publication is provided with a bibliography, a list of tables, charts, diagrams, and examples. A separate part is an appendix, which includes Przewodnik do badań nad pytaniami, stwierdzeniami uczniów oraz czynnościami i działaniami nauczyciela (A Guide to Research on Questions and Statements of Students with Activities and Actions of a Teacher) along with research tools and numerous charts supplementing the research outcomes that were presented and interpreted in chapter three.

The monograph presents the strategy and the determinants of building national awareness in Poland and Germany concerning peripheries with regard to their perception by outer environments, which, in turn, adopt a new view constructed in central regions by periphery communities. It formulates a hypothesis that the image of peripheries, created in the socio-cultural discourse in central regions, displays national traits, which create a coherent and consistent image of the state, both from the Polish and German perspective.

This book is devoted to the discussion of questionnaires for the German Linguistic Atlas (Deutscher Sprachatlas), designed by Georg Wenker (1852–1911), a librarian working in Marburg. The present study offers a linguistic analysis of replies to Wenker’s questionnaire collected in eighty locations in eastern Mazuria – the Ełk, Gołdap and Olecko districts. Although the questionnaire had been designed to explore German dialects, it was possible to identify Polish dialectal features and to conduct a partial reconstruction of the state of Mazurian dialects of Polish in the easternmost part of the historical province of East Prussia in the nineteenth century. Wenker’s survey material is a unique set of data from the period which provides a broad perspective on local dialects of eastern Mazuria, a peripheral area which had a limited contact with the general Polish language for a long time, did not have much connection with Polish cultural and political life, and was characterised by the penetration of the German language.
