Książka poświęcona jest ludobójstwom, czystkom etnicznym i masakrom. Autor stara się wyjaśnić, w jaki sposób dochodzi do tych krwawych aktów zbiorowej przemocy – jak mobilizowani są ludzie i zasoby. W pracy opisano i porównano 12 różnych przypadków ludobójstw totalnych i częściowych – od ludobójstwa Indian w drugiej połowie XIX-wieku w Stanach Zjednoczonych po rzeź Tutsi i Twa w Rwandzie w 1994 roku. Jest to pierwsza praca polskiego autora przedstawiająca tak rozległą socjologiczną komparatystykę ludobójstw. Wypracowany w niej model wyjaśniania został odniesiony do przypadku zemsty na Niemcach po II wojnie światowej. Autor pokazuje dlaczego – mimo różnych zbrodni i okrucieństw – nie doszło do ludobójstwa Niemców. Wykorzystuje w tym celu m.in. 60 wywiadów pogłębionych i narracyjnych ze świadkami epoki. Silną stroną książki jest transdycyplinarność i odwołanie się w niej do szerokiej perspektywy dziejowej, właściwej socjologii historycznej.Jako historyka zainteresował mnie odnotowany przez Autora wpływ ludobójstwa na dalszą historię społeczności – co jest fragmentem szerszego tematu oddziaływania przeszłości na przyszłość. Idzie nie tylko o zjawiska demograficzne. Idzie także o punkt odniesienia społeczności, o traktowanie przeszłości jako czynnika jednoczącego grupę. Te zagadnienia Autor przedstawia wysoce interesująco. (...) Zdecydowanie popieram ideę publikacji omawianej pracy. Uważam, że może mieć ona duże znaczenie dla dalszego kierunku rozwoju polskiej humanistyki.

Migration to Europe is a common dream as its image is idealized. In contrast to much of the recent optimistic literature on globalisation, the author draws attention to cultural domination, a symbolic power of the image of the West.

Philosophy, Dialectics, Reality published for the first time in 1982 by Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy is a presentation of Marek J. Siemek’s philosophical project from the 1970s. The book consists of ten independent articles devoted to important issues of the 20th-century philosophy. Siemek assumes the role of a guide and recreates the comprehensive horizon of contemporary thought struggling with its own past. By means of the conceptual tools of hermeneutics, structuralism, Marxism and Hegel, he outlines his approach, which he defined then as the historical ontology of sense.

An anthology of texts by Aleida Assmann that corresponds to a growing interest in memory studies in Poland. Assmann is one of the most distinguished contemporary representatives of memory studies, who is in addition interested in the issues of memory in Central Eastern Europe. The author combines theoretical reflection, based on an approach originating in literary and cultural studies, with case studies illustrating the transformations of memory after the Second World War. The texts collected in the first part of the book present various concepts and typologies of memory that can be directly applied in analysing phenomena of Polish culture, in the second – various aspects of German and European memory politics.

Stosowaną psychologię rehabilitacji wyróżnia autorskie ujęcie problematyki. Decydują o tym trzy cechy książki.Po pierwsze, przedstawiona w niej wiedza psychologiczna, odnosząca się do osób niepełnosprawnych i ich rehabilitacji, skonfrontowana została z doświadczeniami praktycznymi autora książki. Wyniki tej konfrontacji spowodowały, że niektóre z powszechnie przyjmowanych zasad działania psychologów w obszarze rehabilitacji osób z zaburzeniami psychicznymi, urazami mózgu, przewlekłymi chorobami somatycznymi, widocznymi uszkodzeniami ciała są przez Stanisława Kowalika kontestowane.Po drugie, w książce przedstawiono wiele propozycji innego odczytania problemów doświadczanych przez osoby niepełnosprawne i pomocy psychologicznej w ich rozwiązywaniu. Przy czym autorowi nie chodziło o negowanie już istniejących praktyk rehabilitacyjnych, instytucjonalnie uznawanych za poprawne. Bardziej zależało mu na ukazaniu alternatywnych form pracy z osobami niepełnosprawnymi.Po trzecie, wiele z omówionych w książce propozycji pracy psychologa rehabilitacji nawiązuje do tradycji, gdy tworzony był ten dział psychologii stosowanej. Można ją określić jako okres zrównoważonego regulowania praktyki rehabilitacyjnej przez wiedzę naukową i ideały humanistyczne. Natomiast w obserwowanej obecnie sytuacji stopniowej dehumanizacji rehabilitacji, warto ciągle przypominać o tych ideałach, szczególnie gdy pracujemy z osobami niepełnosprawnymi.

The author presents the image of a modern father - present in the child's life and involved in his upbringing. The author describes and analyzes paternal attitudes in the Polish rural environment on the example of the Płock poviat. This book is a proposal to identify and take a closer look at selected aspects of the functioning of modern culture, in which the growing importance of games (especially video games) and the broadly understood ludicity, or "game-like" qualities, are clearly manifested. The key point of reference for the considerations undertaken are gamers, understood as a specific type of cultural participants. As the foundation for the argument, the examples of an academic reflection on the subject-matter are recognized and the field of this reflection is outlined, highlithting mainly the links between games and culture. This is followed by a discussion of issues related to the specifics of experiencing video games (mainly in a technological context), but also to the competencies of gamers, and to the fact of their diverification as a group, including some taxonomies. Further on, the perspective broadens, turning to the culture of games/gamers (among other things: venues designed for gamers, specialized media, events and other phenomena shaping the "gaming culture"). The argument concludes with an attempt to look at culture (as a whole) through the prism of its "gamification". Thus, the manifestations of "game-likeness" beyond the core "gaming culture" itself are discussed – the influence of games on other branches of culture (including entertainment industries or the arts), cultural protocols, everyday life, etc., and therefore on the competencies desired for modern cultural participation.

Stanisław Bareja (1929-1987) was a Polish film director born in Warsaw. After the war, the family moved to Jelenia Góra. Staszek had great intellectual passions from the beginning and after graduating from high school he decided to continue his education at the film school in Łódź. In 1960 he made his debut with the comedy “The Man of His Wife. ” The 1960s were successful with the comedies “Wife for an Australian” and “Marriage with Reason. ” His films, in which popular actors appeared, moved to cinemas and attracted increasing criticism from the press and parts of the film world. In the late 1960s, Kasimir Kutz, an old friend of Barei’s, used the term “ba reizm” for artistic mediocrity. This helped to block further projects of the director for four years. Bareja returned in 1972 with the movie “Wanted Wanted. ” A new, more mature period of his work began. His comedies will now consistently brand the absurdities and humiliations of life under real socialism. That’s why there’s always trouble with censorship and crowded public halls. In the 1970s, criticism of Bareia remained ambivalent. On the one hand, he was still under condemnation, but on the other hand, there were positive voices on “What are you gonna do with me when you catch me” and “Bär” that put his films in a circle of moral discomfort. Since the late 1970s, Bareja had been a member of the Democratic Opposition, and his house had an illegal print shop. In the 1980s he produced two series “Alternative 4” and “Changer. ” The fight against censorship affected the health of the director, who died in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1987. Bareja’s wife didn’t have time to reach the dying man. The power of that time prevented them from doing so. Bareja left two children: the daughter Kasia and the son Janek. Today, the director’s work belongs to the permanent work of Polish film art.

The book is dedicated to creating and evolution of the image of inhabitants of Arabia in ancient and early medieval sources. At the beginning the author attempts to answer the questions, which area in the discussed period was treated as Arabia, which ethnoi were considered Arab and what names were used to name them. The second part begins with the chapter devoted to the sources of knowledge of the Greeks and the Romans about Arabia and its inhabitants. The author then presents the lands and tribes considered “Arabic” (rightly or not) by ancient writers, as well as their opinion about the people of the Arabian Peninsula. She tries to explain with which tribal groups and in what circumstances the Greeks and the Romans maintained relations and how it influenced the perception of their Arab neighbours. The above findings have become the foundations for the third part, devoted to the image of the Arabs in late antique and early Byzantine sources. Having presented the fluctuations of geopolitical situation in the early years of current era, the author presents the process of forging a new network of alliances of the two powers: the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire and the Persian Empire with Arab tribes. Much attention has been paid to religious issues, pointing to the cohabitation of pagan beliefs, Judaism and different currents of Christianity in the Peninsula before Islam. The vast chapter discusses the image of the inhabitants in the texts written in a variety of languages by Byzantine authors. It points to the persistence of some, not infrequently stereotypical opinions, spread by the Byzantines, who thus followed the ancient writers, but also to different points of view on the Arab neighbours, resulting from the fact that many of them became Christians. The book is supplemented by the biographies of selected Arab leaders.

Legal interpreters assume, inter alia, that the legislator consistently applies the concepts throughout the entire legal act, and that they do not introduce any unnecessary fragments into the text (prohibition of per non est interpretation). Do such interpreters' assumptions accurately reflect the way the legislator works? And do the persons handling the legislative process employ in their work tools with which the law will then be read? In order to find the answer to this question, the author has analyzed the applicable legislation and has undertaken socio-legal research, using the methods of text analysis, participant observation and in-depth interviews with legislators working in the Legislative Office of the Chancellery of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. The results of his research and the conclusions derived from it are presented in the monograph titled Korespondencja dyrektyw redagowania i interpretowania tekstu prawnego. The book covers the findings of research on the 21st century Polish film and photography. For the purposes of this study, the terms film and photography are broadly understood and rooted in the culture studies perspective. Due to such framing, the author combines studies on fiction, documentary, short and feature-length films as well as documentary and staged photographs. The presented readings are created around three main categories of images, which are: spectres, shadows of the anthropos and banners.
