Discourses on emotions – pedagogy and everyday school life

Dyskursy o emocjach – pedagogika i codzienność szkolna

Author(s): Irena Przybylska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: emotional culture; the school's emotional climate; teacher's emotional work

The theme of the present work constitutes, in the broadest sense, the emotions and their importance in everyday school reality. In the book, I attempt a reading of academic discourses which concern emotions and an indication of their importance for pedagogical thinking and action. The educational discourse is constructed by, above all, the concept of emotions as an important factor for growth and education and the concept of assistance in the development of emotional competence of students. Assuming cultural definitions of emotions, I argue that in school as a social space and institution, emotions are not only a result of interpersonal processes, obligations and expectations but are also ontologically grafted into the process of upbringing and should be a studied discipline of educational influences in its own right. The framework for theoretical discussion is constituted by the category of emotional culture, defined as a collection of rules which direct behaviours and the expression of emotions, as well as the meanings given to emotions in a particular socio-cultural context. The semantic field outlined by this category turned out to be sufficiently generative to limit the object of empirical research to the emotional climate of a classroom and the emotional work of the teacher, where according to the theoretical assumptions, the emotional culture becomes apparent. The emotional climate has been conceptualized as a permanent or transitory availability of certain categories of emotions, which is socially established in emotional conventions. The emotional work of the teacher means undertaking actions as a response to the rules of emotional culture and with the purpose of maintaining self-presentation and emotional climate conductive to the performance of tasks expected of the teacher’s role. In such an understanding, emotional work has not only a psychological meaning, but also a pedagogical one. On the basis of heuristic models of emotional climate and work, the research tools have been constructed: The Questionnaire Emotional Climate – Student, and the Questionnaire Emotional Work – Teacher. The accuracy and the cohesion of both have been confirmed statistically. Due to the nature of the researched facts and pedagogical phenomena and the purpose of research, which, apart from a description also involve an attempt at an understanding and interpretation of the importance of emotions in a classroom environment, the empirical procedure employed triangulation. On the basis of the research results, among others, a relation between the teacher’s emotional work and the emotional climate of the classroom was verified. The description of the studied variables was “condensed” with a layer of subjective impressions, teachers’ and students’ convictions and observations gathered in the researched classrooms. Emotional experience of students in classrooms was described, and, on the basis of interviews with teachers, areas where they undertake emotional work were characterized. The book’s narrative remains open, as the undertaken concepts revealed many research fields which inspire further study and discussion. Moreover, the acquired results indicate the key areas for the redefinition of professional training of teachers, where the discourses on emotions are almost entirely absent.

Literature in the Shadow of Factory Stacks. - An Anthology

- Antologia / Anthologie

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish,German

Keywords: anthology; Łódź literature; German literature in Łódź; cultural heritage

The book is a bilingual anthology of over fifty texts written in German by 19th- and 20th-century authors, absent from the critical and popular consciousness so far, but deeply rooted in Łódź history. The editors attempted to reconstruct literature written in the distinct regional variety of the German language called Lodzer Deutsch (or Lodzerdeutsch), and to present it as translated into Polish. The texts have for the most part been sourced from newspapers, few of which having been digitized; the publication therefore also contributes to saving the cultural heritage of Łódź. The reader can also find authors’ profiles, a minidictionary of selected Lodzerdeutsch vocabulary, introductory essays on the historical and cultural context of “Łódź literature” and on the characteristics of the Łódź variety of German. The publication is accompanied by five audio tracks in Lodzerdeutsch read by Aurelia Scheffel, who left Łódź – her home town – and moved with her parents to Oldenburg in 1946. The language presented in the recordings is one which Scheffel used on a daily basis in her home. Each track can be played by clicking on a corresponding link below.

Helping Education in Exile. The Publishing Activity of the Committee for Polish Children in the USSR (1943–1946). Second edition

Na pomoc zesłańczej edukacji. Działalność wydawnicza Komitetu do spraw Dzieci Polskich w ZSRR (1943-1946). Wydanie drugie

Author(s): Albin Głowacki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Committee for Polish Children; Kompoldiet; Stalinist regime; education in exile; deportation; exile; repatriation

The latest monograph showcases the publishing activity of the Committee for Polish Children in the USSR in the years 1943–1946. It also presents the dramatic state of education among the deportees’ children until 1943 against the backdrop of Polish-Soviet relations. Analysing post-Soviet archives, the author discusses the political conditions and context of the publishing work of the Committee that was meant to shape the consciousness of pupils as desired by the Polish communists. The reader discovers a behind-the-scenes reality of the committee’s efforts to provide teaching programmes and coursebooks steeped in factual as well as ideological and political content to Polish-medium schools. The author offers a particularly interesting commentary on the preparation and publishing of original material, such as the alphabet book, reading practice texts, native literature excerpts and a Polish geography, as well as a Polish history teaching programme. He also makes critical observations on the obstacles to the Committee’s editorial activity, many of which resulted from the limitations of the war period, censorship and political determinants.

Collective Representations of the Peoples of the Former Yugoslavia in the 21st Century. A Political Scientific Perspective

Wyobrażenia zbiorowe społeczeństw byłej Jugosławii w XXI wieku. Perspektywa politologiczna

Author(s): Magdalena Rekść / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: economic crisis; collective memory; Yugoslavia; Balkans; Balkan identity; collective representations

The publication is a novel study in the field of Polish political science regarding collective representations – a category associated mainly with sociology – from the point of view of a political sphere researcher. The theoretical model adopted by the author has been used to outline and analyze the shapes of collective representations of the peoples of the former Yugoslavia in the difficult period of protracted economic crisis and the accumulation of further political problems. The in-depth diagnosis of ordinary people's feelings about the reality that surrounds them has led to the ascertainment that, over the recent years, rising problems and negative emotions have begun to predominate over optimistic premises, while maintaining stability in the region requires some more determined and well-thought-out actions by the international community. The monograph, written from the perspective of political science and based on qualitative data, combines the elements of other social sciences and humanities, which appeared necessary to explain the interdisciplinary category of collective representations in an integral manner. This broader view of the complicated Balkan region can contribute to improving the knowledge and understanding of it.

Charbel. The Road to Perfection. Contemporary view on the early Christian philosophy of asceticism

Szarbel. Droga doskonałości. Współczesne oblicze wczesnochrześcijańskiej filozofii ascezy

Author(s): Aleksander R. Bańka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: eremitism; asceticism; Maronites; spirituality; hermitage;monasticism;

Charbel: The Road to Perfection is the first Polish-language monograph on the life and spirituality of Charbel Makhlouf, a Lebanese monk and eremite, who is regarded as the most important modern continuator of early Christian ascetic philosophy. It is a study of his life, the most significant threads of his spirituality, and the philosophical foundations of his asceticism. The volume consists of three chapters, a preface, an introduction, concluding remarks, bibliography, and a personal index. Chapter 1 opens with a presentation of the broader context of Charbel Makhlouf ’s life. It outlines the short history of the Maronite Church, of which Charbel was a member, and the history of the Maronites, beginning with the early stage when the community was forming, until the turmoil of war, which cast a shadow over the early period of his life. This broader context makes it possible to carry out a detailed analysis of facts that comprise this part of Charbel’s life (before he entered the novitiate in Mayfouq) and to propose a chronological and factographic reconstruction of his childhood, which is the main task of Chapter 1. The motivation for this approach comes from the fact that the first period of Charbel’s life is poorly documented, giving rise to many conjectures and speculations that need verification. Both contexts — the historical background and Charbel’s childhood and youth — are presented in the first chapter of this volume as a unique substratum for his developing monastic vocation and his future ascetic practice. Although Charbel’s spirituality was a continuation of the main ideas of the ascetic practice of the Egyptian desert fathers and early Christian Syrian ascetics, at the end of the 19th century, this Lebanese eremite was able to shape it in a way that was novel and unprecedented in the modern understanding of the past Christian ascetic tradition. Thus, apart from providing a detailed analysis of facts that comprise the second period of Charbel’s life (before he became an eremite), Chapter 2 of this volume attempts to present the evolution of the main elements of his spirituality, in particular, of the fundamental aspects of the so-called philosophy without philosophy (the way of working and praying, faithfulness to the rule, the idea of monastic obedience, and the devotion to liturgy). The last period of Charbel Makhlouf ’s life comprises almost 24 years spent in the hermitage in Annaya. It is during that time that the unique elements of Charbel’s eremite life became recognisable and that the strong impact his attitude had on society became visible. This influence, which intensified following his death and triggered many socio-cultural transformations both in Lebanon and in other parts of the Middle East, stems from an extremely radical interpretation and practice of the profoundest ascetic ideals of the Christian tradition. Chapter 3 attempts to demonstrate how these ideals manifested themselves in Charbel’s mature years and in what way they were transposed to his contemporaneous cultural context. For this reason, the analysis presented in Chapter 3 is not limited to historical findings related to the final period of Charbel’s life (establishing facts and verification of biographic data up to the time of his death in the Annaya hermitage) but also aims to reconstruct a complete picture of his spirituality. The volume ends with extensive concluding remarks, which systematically and succinctly present the effects of Charbel’s life, his influence on the shape of Middle East Christianity, and the development of his cult in the modern Catholic Church. This monograph is addressed not only to researchers and students but also to readers who, through the prism of Charbel’s life, wish to gain more insight into Christian eremitism and Christian spirituality in the Middle East and, above all, to discover the modern face of early Christian ascetic philosophy.

The Polish Language General Didactics

Polonistyczna dydaktyka ogólna

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: didactics;methodology;Polish language education;curriculum;lesson theory;teaching aids;homework;textbooks;Tadeusz Czapczyński;upbringing;teaching;learning

The book is a didactic compendium for students preparing for the role of a teacher of Polish. The authors draw on the latest research in various disciplines: linguistics, literature, didactics of the Polish language, pedagogy, psychology, and also associate Polish didactics with general didactics. The publication contains guidelines on the use of general didactic methods in Polish language teaching and the need to use the digital learning environment. The rationale behind any Polish language didactics handbook is to organize and link the goals and methods of cultural and literary as well as cultural and linguistic education, explaining the purposefulness and meaning of the teacher's activities, but also directing the teacher’s methodological ratiocination. The book has therefore been built on solid foundations in accordance with the logic of the argumentation, covering the full spectrum of the subject matter indicated by the title, i.e. student and teacher topics, methods and principles as well as forms of teaching, textbooks, core curriculum, organization of lessons and homework, teaching aids, and finally evaluation of education results. […] The authors of The Polish Language General Didactics are practitioners, so they have an understanding of both the psychophysical capabilities of students and the deficiencies in the students’ and teachers’ didactic perception. They accurately explain the problems that are still insufficiently understood by teacher candidates – for instance, when they elucidate the role of the preamble to the curriculum and emphasize that teachers have the right to introduce innovations to the accepted course [...] or even develop an original program [...]. The examples have been carefully selected to inspire the updating of literary classics and thinking about language in terms of the contemporary cultural linguistics. From the Introduction by prof. dr hab. Anna Ślusarz

Wyzwania polityki rozwoju regionalnego w Chinach. Formułowanie-implementacja-adaptacja

Author(s): Marek Świstak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: china economy development; China

Polityka rozwoju regionalnego stanowi specyficzny przykład koegzystencji interwencji publicznej i wykorzystania mechanizmów rynkowych. Powyższemu towarzyszą polityczna centralizacja i gospodarcza decentralizacja.

Contemporary schola mortis

Współczesna schola mortis

Author(s): Agnieszka Janiak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: śmierć; death and dying; tabu; pogrzeb; obrzęd przejścia; death; death acceptance

Kolejne omawiane w książce zagadnienia to konieczność kształtowania odpowiednich środków komunikacji i form pomocy niesionej osobom dotkniętym doświadczeniem śmierci oraz odpowiednie przygotowanie służb pomocowych – medycznych, psychologicznych, socjalnych i administracyjnych. dr hab. Grzegorz Godawa, prof. UPJPII

The state and conditions of self-education of students

Stan i uwarunkowania autoedukacji studentów

Author(s): Violetta Rodek / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: self-education of students; students; education

Prezentowane w pracy badania stanowiły próbę holistycznego ujęcia autoedukacji studentów studiów pedagogicznych i niepedagogicznych. W etapie pierwszym – ilościowym – zmierzano do określenia stopnia aktywności autoedukacyjnej studentów z uwzględnieniem uwarunkowań związanych z płcią, kierunkiem, rodzajem, rokiem studiów i samooceną. W wyniku badań ilościowych wyłoniono dwie grupy problemowe: studentów o najwyższym i najniższym stopniu aktywności autoedukacyjnej.

PolEnglish Revisited. English Vocabulary in the 21st-century Polish Language

PolEnglish Revisited. Leksyka angielska w polszczyźnie XXI wieku

Author(s): Łukasz Jan Berezowski,Mikołaj Deckert / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Anglicisms; contact linguistics; English borrowings; English loanwords; language contact

This volume deals with the influence of English lexical elements upon Polish, especially upon the units used in Internet discourse and in new media. Of particular interest here are the latest English borrowings – dating back to the turn of the 20th and the 21st century – both lexical and semantic. The aim of the present book is, therefore, to explore the scale of this impact upon Polish on the basis of a corpus compiled and organised in the form of a lexicon comprising 1,600 entries with definitions and examples from Internet websites, social media, forums and modern literature. An important contribution of the publication is to offer an experimental user-focused perspective on Anglicisms, sourcing input from a young generation of Polish speakers.
