Dwelling on Kant’s treatment of the enemy in the context of both civil war and inter-state war, this paper argues that the “cosmopolitan” perspective he inaugurated is not as radical a departure from traditional realist conceptions of politics as is commonly supposed. Kant’s rationalist approach does indeed put the question of war and peace on a novel footing, but as his overall argument implicitly hangs on the concept of sovereignty – albeit the sovereignty of reason – it can hardly serve as a basis for political judgement.

Metalinguistic operations signify understanding and translation, specified in Jakobson’s varieties of six language functions and his three types of translation. Both models were first presented in the 1950s. This article is rooted in Jakobson’s models in connection with Peirce’s three categories. Bühler’s three functions with qualitative difference anticipated, perhaps not accidentally, Jakobson’s distinctions indicating qualitative difference within literary forms and structures as well as other fine arts. The semiotic discovery, criticism and perspective of elements and code-units settle the numerical differences as well as the differences in realistic messages and conceptual codes. Jakobson’s intersemiotic translation is updated in vocal translation, which deals with the virtual reality of opera on stage, reaching a catharsis of the operatic mystique. The word-tone synthesis of opera (or semiosic symbiosis) will demonstrate the typological unification of verbal and nonverbal languages.

The spread of globalization and marketing during the last century triggered the proliferation of advertising genres. The goal of advertisements is to persuade consumers to act or think in a textually determined way in order to boost sales of particular commodities and services. In order to capture attention, convey the message and persuade the consumer, advertising texts use a range of manipulative language devices. Moreover, different cultures may have different expectations with regard to stylistic choices, language use and other preferences in the same genre. Hence the aim of the article is to analyze the language of advertising in English and Lithuanian in order to estimate the specificities of the advertising genre in the two different cultural and linguistic systems. The approach employed in the study draws on the ideas of the functionalist interpretation of text typology and source text analysis as proposed by Nord (1997) and Reiss (2000). The functionalist approach provides an in-depth understanding of the source and target text conventions and functions which are prerequisites for successful intercultural communication and translation. The means to accomplish the task of the present article is the analysis of a comparable corpus of data consisting of 100 English and 100 Lithuanian advertising texts. For the analysis, only the textual part of advertisements is considered; it is viewed as one of the most important elements of the overall advertising message. The corpus is analyzed through the parameters of linguistic devices, syntactic features and language-use in English and Lithuanian advertising texts.

This opinion piece explains recent changes to the biology curriculum in England and then, meant very much as a starting point for discussion, poses some suggestions as to how some of the problematic changes maybe addressed and challenged. Central to the arguments made are that the new mandatory curriculum is poorly designed in terms of the way content is sequenced, especially with regard that the place that learning about evolution takes, and that opportunities for learning through meaningful practical work and informal learning opportunities have become diminished. Suggestions are made for how biology educators may address these issues and become agencies for change.

This article examines how opportunity management process is supported through online, telephone, and showroom channels in Polish tourist industry. The research applied a mystery client method in 40 entities. The results of the study indicate that the best performance can be expected as the customer enters the showroom in person, while companies have problems in managing online customer enquiries, and with the continuity of the multi-channel dialogue. This may bring severe losses in marketing conversion, and raises a question of overall proficiency in managing customer relations of entities representing important industry.

Ove godine (2016) navršilo se 155 godina od rođenja Fridtjofa Nansena, norveškog istraživača sjevernog pola, zoologa, diplomata i sportaša. Rođen je 10. listopada 1861. godine u Store Frørenu kraj Osla. Roditelji su mu Baldur Fridtjof Nansen i majka Adelaid Johane Thekle iz Bæruma. Imao je dva brata od kojih je najstariji umro još kao dijete. Nansenov otac bio je poznati odvjetnik i vrlo religiozan čovjek. Međutim, Fridtjof nije krenuo očevim stopama za pravnim znanostima, njega su zanimale prirodne znanosti – zoologija. Nansen je fizički više izgledao na majku. Bio je atletski građen, odlučan i snažne volje. Njegova majka poticala je svoju djecu da se bave sportom i fizičkim aktivnostima u prirodi. Otud i Nansenovo zanimanje za skijanje i umjetničko klizanje te plivanje, u čemu je imao zapažene rezultate. Nansenova atletska građa, svojstvena je skandinavcima. Živeći na selu, s vršnjacima je maksimalno koristio prirodni okoliš koji ga je okruživao. Koristeći kratka ljeta, plivao je u obližnjem jezeru i lovio ribu. Kaže: “Znao sam ljetne praznike živjeti kao Robinson Crusoe”. Takav način života u prirodi ga je sve više čeličio i dobivao je sve veće samopouzdanje u sebe. A kad je snijeg zabijelio sredinu u kojoj je živio, vrijeme je koristio skijajući i klizajući po obližnjem jezeru. Kažu, da je znao prijeći i do 80 kilometara dnevno. Njegovo izvrsno poznavanje skijanja dobro će mu doći prilikom njegovih polarnih istraživanja.

Svijetom se proširila vijest, da su petorica Norvežana i jedan Šved na splavi Kon-Tiki preplovili Tihi ocean. Senzacija nad senzacijama. Ljudi su se pitali. Je li to moguće? Da, moguće je. To se dogodilo u ljeto 1947. godine. Gdje i kako je sve to počelo? Thor Heyerdahl sa svojom ženom Liv, živio je godinu dana na jednom otoku Fatu Hivi otočja Mirquisas u Polineziji usred Tihog oceana, prije Drugog svjetskog rata. Slušali su priče od jednog domorodačkog starca o starčevu porijeklu. On im je pričao, da su na te otoke njegovi preci došli s istoka, odnosno iz Južne Amerike. Thor je po otocima Tahitija viđao kamene kipove i crteže naslikane na kamenu. Domorodci su te kamene skulpture zvali Kon-Tiki.

The article presents the figures of three historians and theoreticians of Renaissance music: Jerzy Libanus of Legnica, Sebastian of Felsztyn and Marcin Kromer. Basic scribal abbreviations or sigla from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are explained on the example of their works. The above remarks will make it easier for students of musicology to read old prints. These remarks are supplemented by a list of basic works devoted to reading a complicated Latin text.

Historians, sociologists and social designers develop a concept for a memorial tour, conveying the history of Hungarian Jewish forced labor in Vienna 1944/45. The tour visits several sites of forced labor in the city that were researched and understood in depth also relying on survivors’ interviews. These places are often known, but not for this part of their history. Developing a concept of participative remembrance in which the personal approach is central and where a connection is formed between the journey in Vienna, the visited locations, the informative talks on sites, and the own perception of the visitor. Questioning our role within the commemorative culture regarding WW2 embedded in our historical context and understanding our objectives and current position in the present. The design of the tour is part of a big research project to uncover Hungarian Jewish forced labor in Vienna.

This paper examines the application of text-act theory in literary translation, attempting to evaluate its efficacy in the analysis of larger texts, such as novels. The texts that form the material basis for this examination are the Slovak novel Dunaj v Amerike (2010) and its (authorized, unpublished) English translation Danube in America (2016). The main research objective is to compare the performative function in the Slovak source text (ST) and the English target text (TT), implementing the concept of the pragmatic translator as suggested by Morini (2008, 2012). Aiming to discover the relationship between the performative function of the TT and its actual perception by TT readers, the research project was realised involving the participation of the translators1 and TT recipients.

No other phenomenon has affected the natural course of life of the entire planet since World War II until the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to implementing the rules generated by the state of emergency or by the state of alert, the citizens are seeking parallel solutions, that function as a refuge, where they can withdraw from fear. Being out of control, this feeling can irreparably paralyse rational thinking. Natively endowed with a very well-developed sense of humour, our compatriots found an opportunity to turn it to account by using their ingenuity. They created a rich inventory of comic texts, which would sweeten the fear of the unfriendly profile of this coronavirus. In this paper we refer to a special type of urban folk literature, generated, as previously stated, by physical isolation at home, but which occurred simultaneously with the exit from latency of a spirit which is thirsty for figment. To be more specific, we analyzed some of the jokes that have circulated on various communication channels (especially electronic ones) and whose invariant theme is the human existence during the epidemic, captured in all its fundamental aspects. A condition for the successful communication of a joke is placing the interlocutors in a familiar context of immediate conceptions, interests and aspirations, which means that both the speaker and the recipient benefit from a common background. On the one hand, we tried to identify the semantic meaning of the texts we took into consideration, and on the other hand, we studied how we are led, “activated” to the pragmatic meaning of the statement through latent, implicit content.

Humans today have the ability to use language. The common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans probably did not. During recent decades evolutionary linguists have attempted to explain how the gap between a non-linguistic ancestor and our linguistic species was bridged. In this direction, it has become common to invoke the notion of a protolanguage as a stable intermediary stage in the evolution of language. A key dispute among the currentlyavailable hypotheses of protolanguage is represented by the distinction between holistic and synthetic accounts: did human protolanguage consist of holistic utterances – later segmented into single words – or did it start with simple units that were added together into more complex structures? The synthetic account is generally recognized as “the standard model,” thus assuming that the earliest forms of a presumed protolanguage were compositional, that is built up from single words, where one word corresponds to one concept. However, recent years have seen the consolidation of the alternative idea: each element of a protolanguage would have been linguistically unanalyzable and referred to a whole situation. This paper presents the case of formulaic language as evidence – a living linguistic fossil – which corroborates arguments in support of a holistic protolanguage account.

Das Übersetzen ist eine individuelle Tätigkeit, die eine lexikalische, eine linguistische und eine semantische Fähigkeit des Übersetzers im Vordergrund stellt. Die Übersetzung hat eine kognitive, eine soziale und eine kulturelle Dimension. Der Übersetzungsprozess hebt verschiedene Schwierigkeiten auf. Die Übersetzungsschwierigkeiten sind verschieden und werden von den Erfahrungen und vom Sprach- und Fachwissen des Übersetzers geprägt. Im Falle der Fachbegriffe spielt die Verständlichkeit des Kontextes und des Fachbereichs eine entscheidende Rolle. Man unterscheidet auch sprachliche Normen und Konventionen der Zielsprache, wobei sich der Übersetzer mit Sprachkodes konfrontiert. Vorliegender Artikel befasst sich mit interlinguale Übersetzungsmodalitäten, die das Übersetzen von wirtschaftlichen Fachbegriffen im internationalen Kontext beeinflussen.

This paper proposes to highlight the challenges encountered by students in Translation studies and/ or (legal) translators in translating legal texts relating to Civil law (Family law) as a direct result of investigating specific problems and strategies. The content focuses on the identification and the analysis of the pragmatic, linguistic, cultural and text-specific problems and their replication in strategies used in an interdisciplinary translation approach through a virtual legal translation workshop. Furthermore, this paper intends to outline the expected findings of the above-mentioned virtual legal translation workshop: the academic and professional validation of theoretical ideas brought in different practices usable in legal translation activities.

In everyday speech, the word 'tragedy' means something like 'very sad'. We will talk about a tragic collision at a busy intersection in which a young woman was killed, just as the ancient Greeks used the same epithet for a drama about the execution of a king in a similar place. Indeed, it may happen that 'very sad' is the best we can give when it comes to the far more exalted world of tragic art.
