Igereth Machalath. A Hebrew Chronicle of the 18th Century

Igereth Machalath. Eine hebräische Chronik des 18. Jahrhunderts

Author(s): Salomon Hugo Lieben / Language(s): German / Publication Year: 0

The Jews of Moravian Town

Die Judenschaft einer mährischen Kleinstadt

Author(s): Bertold Bretholz / Language(s): German / Publication Year: 0

School violence: a challenge for local communities

School violence: a challenge for local communities

Author(s): / Language(s): Bulgarian

All Europeans feel affected by the violence and its consequences. Everyday personal security is exposed to threats in different contexts and circumstances: at home, at school, at work, during sporting events and on the street. While violence and the fear of violence affect the everyday life of each, some groups - women, children and adults, as well as immigrants, refugees and some ethnic groups - are particularly vulnerable targets for the abusers.

On the History of Jews in Telč

Zur Geschichte der Juden in Teltsch

Author(s): Michael Rachmuth / Language(s): German / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Jewish merchants; Christian merchants; Jewish tax;

The history of the Jewish community in Telč (Moravia), which numbered 93 souls as late as 1921, has not yet been published, with the exception of a few short notes by Beringer and Janousek on the history of the city and the rule of Teltsch (Telč). And yet the history of this small Jewish community provides us with events of general interest. So the otherwise seldom found fact that in 1651 the city purchased from its landlord Wilhelm Count Slawata the establishment of a numerus clausus of only three Jewish families by obliging them to pay a Jewish tax (Židoplat) per 30 fl to be paid to the count's pension in two half-yearly installments. The trial of the brothers Josef and Moses Hesky, who were accused of fraudulent bankruptcy in 1667, is neither without general interest, since a case of magistrate justice against bankrupt Jews, if the believers were Christians, is presented here. Finally, we are also shown that Christian tradespeople repeatedly complained about the competition of the Jewish traders against the competition of Jewish merchants, not only the authorities and the state authorities, but also that the latter in their shops (as in a modern department store) peddle a larger number of different categories of commodities. Also interesting are the reasons which the Teltsch Jews cite for the fact that the Jewish trader does not specialize in a single type of commodity in his trade like the Christian one.

THE BEGINNINGS OF OFFICIAL RECORDING OF THE CAUSES OF DEATH ON THE EXAMPLE OF ROKYTNICE IN THE EAGLE MOUNTAINS

THE BEGINNINGS OF OFFICIAL RECORDING OF THE CAUSES OF DEATH ON THE EXAMPLE OF ROKYTNICE IN THE EAGLE MOUNTAINS

POČÁTKY ÚŘEDNÍHO ZAZNAMENÁVÁNÍ PŘÍČIN ÚMRTÍ NA PŘÍKLADU ROKYTNICE V ORLICKÝCH HORÁCH

Author(s): Kateřina Doležalová / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Rokytnice in the Eagle Mountains; analysis of death records; Rokytnice citizens;

This interdisciplinary study focuses on death causes of citizens of the town of Rokytnice in the Eagle Mountains. It covers the period from the 20 th February 1784, when the Emperor Joseph II ordered local parsons to keep records regarding citizen ´ deaths. In order to put this research into a more detailed context, the study openswith an analysis of the situation of Rokytnice rectory and the level of healthcare in the second half of the 18th century. The key building stone of the study is an analysis of death records in Rokytnice between 1784–1812. Interestingly, the research shows that the record keeping was interrupted in several places due to missing pre-printed death register formulaires. The situation stabilized sometime between May and June 1784. Apparently, the parsons themselves began to manually prepare the formulaires which turned out to be the simplest solution. These manually completed formulaires existed in Rokytnice until 1812, indicating that the government probably had to resign on these pre-printed formulaires at the beginning of their existence. The next chapter, focusing on death causes of Rokytnice citizens with German origin between 1784–1793, reveals interesting observations. The study proves the quality of death diagnosis was rather low and unstable. Interestingly, parsons recorded symptoms rather than diagnosis in multiple cases. Clearly, this represents an obstacle for this research as it is almost impossible to consistently track the death causes due to missing or incomplete statistics..
