Giovanni Maria Angiolello’s Description of Constantinople (after 1477)

Джован-Мария Анджолело и неговото описание на Константинопол (сл. 1477 г.)

Author(s): Penka Danova / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1-2/2010

Keywords: Giovanni Maria Angiolello; description of Constantinople; Viaggio di Negroponte; Historia Turchesca; “matters Turkish”

The article discusses the stylistic, linguistic and compositional peculiarities of the description of Constantinople, one of the most highly-prized by specialists parts of the Viaggio di Negroponte by Giovanni Maria Angiolello. On the basis of the analysis made, the author arrives at the conclusion that, just like his famous Historia Turchesca, is a composite work which, along with his personal impressions and observations, refers to texts and borrows some themes on “matters Turkish” (delle cose de’ Turchi). The individual parts of the Viaggio di Negroponte were compiled at different times. The author dates the description of Constantinople after 1478. The article uses unpublished variants of the Historia Turchesca kept at the civic museum of Venice, Museo Correr, and designated as Ms. Cicogna 2761 and Ms. Correr 1328. An attachment provides a translation of the description of Constantinople in Bulgarian translation.

Orphists – Sophists or not? (Protagoras 316 d-e)

Czy orficy byli sofistami? (Protagoras 316d-e)

Author(s): Marcin Wasilewski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2010

Keywords: sophists; orphists; orphism; Plato; Protagoras

Plato - as phrased by Protagoras - defines old worshipers of Orpheus as sophists. This statement may seem from today's perspective weird and unthinkable. The objective of the article is an attempt to clarify this Platonic dictum of Protagoras. On the basis of ancient sources I will try to find what originally the term sophistes meant.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISES AS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF PHILOSOPHICAL LIFE

SPIRITUAL EXERCISES AS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF PHILOSOPHICAL LIFE

Author(s): Igor Gasparov / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2014

Keywords: spiritual exercises; philosophy; philosophical way of life; good life

In my paper I will argue for the thesis that spiritual exercises are an essential part of every philosophical life. My arguments are partly historical, partly conceptual in their nature. First, I show that philosophy at each stage of its history was accompanied by spiritual exercises. Next, I provide a definition of spiritual exercises as genuinely philo-sophical activity. Then I show that the philosophical life cannot be complete if it does not include spiritual exercises.

Paul Rycaut, The present state of the Ottoman empire. Textual tradition and lexical borrowings from Turkish

Author(s): Wolfgang Schweickard / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2015

Keywords: Paul Rycaut; Juan Bautista Lardito; Ottoman Empire; Turkisms;historical lexicography

Paul Rycaut’s The Present State of the Ottoman Empire is the first comprehensive description of the Ottoman Empire written in English by an author who reported firsthand. The first edition of 1666 was reprinted several times and translated into French, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Spanish, German and Russian. The present article provides information on the genesis, the structure and the sources of the English original as well as on the various translations and their interrelationship (the Spanish version was completely unknown until now, since the translator concealed the real authorship). On the basis of selected examples, the special interest of the work for the historical study of Turkish borrowings in European languages is illustrated.

Towards the reform of medieval mendicant orders. Exhortatio ad meditationem et conformationem passionis Christi by Maciej Hayn (†1477)

Ku reformie średniowiecznych mendykantów. Macieja Hayna (†1477) Exhortatio ad meditationem et conformationem passionis Christi

Author(s): Adam Poznański / Language(s): English,Polish / Issue: 1/2012

Keywords: mendicants; middle ages; reform; Maciej Hayn

Exhortatio ad meditationem et conformationem passionis Christi written by a Dominican Matthias Hayn in 1470 describes how the friars should make an effort to improve their behaviour towards others and deepen their spiritual life during Lent. The author, who received good education while attending Dominican Studia Generalia in Cologne, Vienna and Paris, was designated by the Master General of the Order of Preachers to effect an observant reform in the Dominican Convent in Wrocław. Presumably Hayn wrote ‘Exhortatio’ as a part of his reform activities. The first part of the text is introduction, where Hayn explained the aim of his work. At the beginning he quoted the words from the first reading for Ash Wednesday: “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning” (Joel 2:12) and then he recommended to the brothers that these three acts of penance are the best way of reconciliation with God. According to Hayn the best example to follow in this matter is Christ, therefore during Lent the friars should ponder the Passion and seek to imitate Christ in their everyday situations, especially in those concerning life in monastery. The second part of Exhoratio (the main one) is divided into forty three short chapters called “Morselli” and each of them consists of “Passio” and “Conformatio”. The first is a passage from the Passion parphrased by Hayn, the latter presents a commentary on the preceding “Passio” including advice for the friars. This article comprises a critical edition of Exhortatio ad meditationem et conformationem passionis Christi accompanied by a Polish translation. The edition is based on two exisiting copies of the text which are contained in two manuscripts from the Wrocław University Library collection.

The Coinage of Apollonia Pontica for the Severan Family (Links between Coin Stamps and Emission Chronology)

Монетосеченето на Аполония Понтийска за семейството на Северите (Връзки между монетните печати и хронология на емисиите)

Author(s): Yanislav Tachev / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1-2/2018

Keywords: coinage; Apollonia; Roman era; Severan family; Emperor Septimius Severan; Caesar Caracalla; Julia Domna

One of the most important issues when studying different aspects of Apollonia’s provincial coinage in detail is dating individual city emissions within the narrowest chronological boundaries possible. The subject of this publication is Apollonia's coinage for the Severan family, since it is most intense during this period. Between 195 and 197, coins were issued concurrently for Emperor Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and his elder son Caesar Caracalla. The absence of coins for Caracalla-Augustus, Plautilla, Geta-Caesar, and Geta-Augustus thus far is evidence that after this period, the city's mint ceased production. The four denominations (V, III, II and I) with their nine different reverse types struck by the city mint for the Severan family with magnificent iconography and elaborate crafts-manship, prove beyond doubt that after Marcus Lucullus’ devastating attack, the oldest city along the Bulgarian coast was resurrected and was, during the Roman era, far from a powerless provincial town with faded glory.

“To Give Each Word a Proper Picture…” Ernst Cassirer in the Warburg Library

„Odpowiedni dać słowu obraz...” Ernst Cassirer w kręgu Biblioteki Warburga

Author(s): Ryszard Różanowski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 39/2017

Keywords: Ernst Cassirer; Aby Warburg; Erwin Panofsky; philosophy of symbolic forms; philosophy of culture; art; myth; science; Renaissance; “afterlife of antiquity”; iconology

Within the period spent in Hamburg, Ernst Cassirer published three subsequent volumes of his most significant and well-known works. Furthermore, he fundamentally expanded his field of interests and turned towards the philosophy of culture. In the spirit of contemplation of the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg he scrutinized the aspect of the role of classical, antique tradition of images in the shaping of European culture (Nachleben der Antike). The material found in the library served him as the base of the formulation of the “general systematics of symbolic forms”. Cassirer’s conception of symbolic forms based upon Erwin Panofsky’s iconology, determined philosophical foundations and became an effective instrument for the investigation of products of culture. Cassirer himself, interested in the functional approach to culture, gained an insight into concrete, historical disciplines. Warburg’s ideas became a persistent element of the humanities and so did the philosophy of symbolic forms

The Fall of the Chorupnik Parish. A Contribution to the History of the Reformation in Poland

Author(s): Bogumił Szady / Language(s): English / Issue: 2SP/2018

Keywords: Chełm Diocese; Chorupnik; Reformation; Counter-Reformation; Catholic clergy; Church benefices; nobility

The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 61, issue 2 (2013).The article addresses the question of the fall of the Latin parish in Chorupnik that belonged to the former diocese of Chełm. The parish church in Chorupnik was taken over by Protestants in the second half of the 16th century. Unsuccessful attempts at recovering its property were made by incorporating it into the neighbouring parish in Gorzków. The actions taken by the Gorzków parish priest and the bishop together with his chapter failed, too. A detailed study of such attempts to recover the property of one of the parishes that ceased to exist during the Reformation falls within the context of the relations between the nobility and the clergy in the period of Counter-Reformation. Studying the social, legal and economic relations in a local dimension is important for understanding the mechanisms of the mass transition of the nobility to reformed denominations, and then of their return to the Catholic Church.

Aquinas’ evaluation of the assertion „quantum intendis, tantum facis“ as relevant to sinful actions

Aquinas’ evaluation of the assertion „quantum intendis, tantum facis“ as relevant to sinful actions

Author(s): Lingchang Gui / Language(s): English / Issue: 25/2019

Keywords: Thomas Aquinas; quantum-tantum assertion; moral intention; sins;

The criticism against the absolute validity of the assertion quantum intendis, tantum facis is an integral component of Aquinas’ doctrine of moral intention. This paper aims to investigate this criticism within the domain of sinful actions according to Aquinas’ division of sins. The quantum-tantum assertion is only valid regarding the mortal sins directly against God, which do not involve any effect of sensual suffering according to their species, whereas these kinds of sins cannot bear any degree of gravity: the loss of the connection with God is radical. Meanwhile, the mortal sins with sensual suffering as effect and the venial sins as the corresponding imperfect form do not follow the assertion and possess varied degrees of gravity: their sinful gravity depends not only on the intentional action, but on the corresponding realization. The fact that, among sins, the validity of the quantum-tantum assertion varies because of the sins’ relation to sensual effect indicates that sinful action, with or without a sensual effect, is involved in the species of sinful acts.

Exploring The Combination of Language and Image: The Multimodal Metaphor

Exploring The Combination of Language and Image: The Multimodal Metaphor

Explorando la combinación de lenguaje e imagen: el caso de la metáfora multimodal

Author(s): Magdalena Sędek / Language(s): Spanish / Issue: 22/2015

Keywords: metaphor; metonymy; modality; newspaper cartoon; cognitive linguistics

The aim of this paper is to present some reflections concerning the multimodal metaphor, which has recently turned into a topic of growing scientific interest. The monomodal metaphor presents itself only as one means of representation (for example, verbal metaphor), while the multimodal metaphor consists of connections among domains belonging to different modes of representation. First of all, the concept of the multimodal metaphor introduced by Forceville (1996, 2008, 2009) and the possible modes of representation are explained. The second part of the paper concentrates on the structure and the characteristics of verbo-visual multimodal metaphors, that is, those that come as a result of interaction between linguistic (verbal narration) and iconic (visual narration) elements. Afterwards, the author discusses the newspaper cartoon, in other words, a type of opinion journalism which encodes verbal and visual discourse that intends to provide a critical and/or humorous vision of an aspect of political, social or cultural life. The analysis leaves no doubt that the verbo-visual genre, represented by newspaper cartoons, is a great example of the multimodal metaphor. Therefore, the paper presents a detailed description of ten newspaper cartoons taken from the opinion section of the digital version of the El País giving also emphasis to the representation of the source and target domains in terms of metaphorical-metonymical interaction.
