Summary/Abstract: One of the most important issues when studying different aspects of Apollonia’s provincial coinage in detail is dating individual city emissions within the narrowest chronological boundaries possible. The subject of this publication is Apollonia's coinage for the Severan family, since it is most intense during this period. Between 195 and 197, coins were issued concurrently for Emperor Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and his elder son Caesar Caracalla. The absence of coins for Caracalla-Augustus, Plautilla, Geta-Caesar, and Geta-Augustus thus far is evidence that after this period, the city's mint ceased production. The four denominations (V, III, II and I) with their nine different reverse types struck by the city mint for the Severan family with magnificent iconography and elaborate crafts-manship, prove beyond doubt that after Marcus Lucullus’ devastating attack, the oldest city along the Bulgarian coast was resurrected and was, during the Roman era, far from a powerless provincial town with faded glory.
