Summary/Abstract: Plato - as phrased by Protagoras - defines old worshipers of Orpheus as sophists. This statement may seem from today's perspective weird and unthinkable. The objective of the article is an attempt to clarify this Platonic dictum of Protagoras. On the basis of ancient sources I will try to find what originally the term sophistes meant.
