Extortion racketeering in the EU: vulnerability factors

Изнудването и рекета в ЕС: фактори за уязвимост

Author(s): Atanas Rusev,Lorella Garofalo,Elena Sciandra,Andrea Gimenez-Salinas,Carmen Jorda,Manuel de Juan Espinosa / Language(s): Bulgarian

Extortion racketeering has been long pointed out as the defining activity of organised crime. Although in recent years this crime has not been among the top listed organised crime threats in the strategic EU policy documents, it still remains ever present in European countries. The seriousness of the phenomenon has been recognised at the EU level and the crime has been listed in a number of EU legal acts in the field of police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters. The report Extortion Racketeering in the EU: A six country study of vulnerability factors analyses extortion racketeering forms and practices in six EU member states. The analysis disentangles the risk and the vulnerability factors for enterprises in two business sectors – agriculture and hospitality – as well as in the Chinese communities. Drawing on the results of the analysis, the report suggests new policies for tackling extortion racketeering in the EU. This report has been produced with the joint efforts of the Center for the Study of Democracy, Instituto de Ciencias Forenses y de la Seguridad – Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Transcrime – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano and Vitosha Research and with the support of Guardia Civil in Spain.

MIGRANTS’ CAREER PATHS WITHOUT BORDERS

MIGRANTÓW ŚCIEŻKI ZAWODOWE BEZ GRANIC

Author(s): Izabela Grabowska-Lusińska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: migration; migration paths; borders

(z recenzji prof. dr. hab. Marka Ziółkowskiego)

The spatial dimension of the careers of managers and entrepreneurs. A sociological analysis

Przestrzenny wymiar karier menedżerów i przedsiębiorców. Analiza socjologiczna

Author(s): Waldemar Dymarczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: career, spatial dimension of careers;manager;entrepreneur’s image;sociological analysis;business in Poland;entrepreneur

The spatial dimension of the careers of business people has been reconstructed in this publication. These are the people who are particularly predisposed to design space in which they then achieve both their private and professional goals. Changes they create in their work environment and beyond affect not only them or their closest ones but also members of the organization they work at as well as partners, competitors and co-operators. This monograph presents various interconnected yet qualitatively differentiable stages in their perception of space and actions taken towards it: from treating space as a resource, through managing it, up to controlling it. The effectiveness of the control is linked with the career-construction model – prevalent among, and typical of, people playing key organizational roles – which is based on an intentional, pragmatic management of the career path and life plan. The book’s target audience are both theoreticians and practitioners of organization management as well as all readers interested in the interpretative paradigm and qualitative research methods, particularly the grounded theory approach.

Sociology of the Internet

Socjologia internetu

Author(s): Dariusz Jemielniak / Language(s): Polish

Metacollage. On the Canon of Metaphorical Thinking

Metakolaż. O kanonie myślenia metaforycznego

Author(s): Dorota Rybarkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: metaphorical thinking; cognitive process; metaphor; metaphorology; metacollage

The author explains the construct of meta-collage by discussing the hybrid concept of metaphor and ways of metaphorical thinking in philosophy, science and ideology. A multi-themed description of various metaphors performing the function of mental models reveals their similarity to a sheet of glass. We look through it, discovering the world, but we do not know if it is transparent or just translucent, scratched or maybe covered with textural marks and colours superimposed on what we are trying to discern beyond it. Metaphors create cognitive categories that are a source of interpretation for incoming data. Their double role puts us against the question about the truth of cognition based on this mechanism and the scope of cognitive uncertainty where the mind can be led astray. The author gives many examples of reaching such limits of cognition and tries to explore issues related to the role of this mechanism in thinking, also of the scientific kind, as well as to its impact on cognition and its assessment. The book will not only help the reader find their way around metacollage: by dint of stimulating ratiocination, it can also contribute to improving the cognitive process and to increasing the chances for a better interpretation of the changing reality.

Polish and Bulgarian firmonyms from the visual communication perspective

Polskie i bułgarskie firmonimy w perspektywie komunikacyjno-wizualnej

Author(s): Patryk Borowiak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Design; return to things; onomastics; firmonyms; proper names

This innovative publication on Polish and Bulgarian chrematonymy presents the way firmonyms functioned on signboards - visual carriers of information and advertising - in Polish and Bulgarian cities (e.g. Warsaw, Sofia, Poznań, Plovdiv) in 2016-2019. The author is particularly interested in signboards with the names of gastronomic establishments, which constitute both an extremely numerous, diverse and distinctive element of the urban landscape. The choice of names was based equally on professional competence and the research interests of the author, who analysed not only the firmonyms as such but also their design, drawing attention to the fact that the name and the medium on which it is presented condition and complement each other. The author also highlights the importance of the different alphabets in Polish and Bulgarian names, which affects the way the content of firmonyms is received. The book also presents similarities and differences in the creation and design of signboards (certain trends in Poland and Bulgaria are presented), as well as differences in how they are perceived by viewers.

Zofia Kossak-Szczucka. The Service

Zofia Kossak-Szczucka. Służba

Author(s): Dariusz Kulesza / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Zofia Kossak;Polish concentration camp literature;Polish Christian literature;Literature of the People’s Republic of Poland;Historical novel

Zofia Kossak defined herself as a Catholic writer. In her opinion, Catholicism was the most effective in saving the temporal world. She also identified with literature that was in service of this salvation. The Catholic writing of Kossak was determined by family, Poland, and faith. The family was the centre of the world, where the writer experienced the initiation in life and history (The Blaze). Zofia Kossak described family in terms of what holds it together and saves (Ku swoim, Towards one’s own). In the last years of her life, she recognised family as a community that creates and is created by history (Dziedzictwo, The Heritage). Poland was described by Kossak as a land that had been heroically recovered, that was national and permanent. This also applied to regions, particularly Silesia (Nieznany kraj, The Unknown Land). However, the most important was Poland that was martyrologically (co)experienced, the country of war and occupation, concentration camps (Z otchłani, From the Abyss), Poland that was raised by her (Protest!). However, nothing was as valuable in the life and works of Zofia Kossak as faith. It was described by her starting from various forms of blessed madness (Szaleńcy Boży, The Madmen of God) through the uncompromising historical and historiosophical verification (Angels in the Dust) to existential source of Abraham’s truth (The Covenant). When looking for the position to place Kossak in Polish literature, the easiest way is to start with her historical novels that bring such antithetic contexts as the works of Sienkiewicz and Parnicki. Yet none of her texts, even those that were referenced and discussed here should be read without a confrontation with Christian literature, determined by such names as Kochanowski, Sęp-Szarzyński, and Norwid.

The Inception of a New Media. Video Games in the Polish Hobby Press at the End of 20th Century

Narodziny medium. Gry wideo w polskiej prasie hobbystycznej końca XX wieku

Author(s): Dominika Staszenko-Chojnacka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: video games; video game history; habitus; gamer identity; computerization

This book describes the phenomenon of creating gamer’s identity in Poland and specific gamer’s habitus which started forming itself in the second half of the 1980s through the articles published in computer magazines. Until the fall of the communist regime video games in Poland had been on the sidelines. The situation began to change after 1989 when access to computers, games and software was much easier than it used to be. As a result, there was a need for magazines devoted only to games. Publication includes description of how journals from the 1990s created players discourse and what consequences it had. It contains an analysis of specific writing style and language used by editors who created terms and names of genres later used by gamers. In this context it is worth mentioning that in that time specific types of articles emerged. Among them were reviews and walkthrough, which allowed practice of ‘reading’ games, that’s why people without access to new interactive medium learned about it through magazines. The first chapter presents the methodology of the research, using the concept of habitus, field and cultural capital by Pierre Bourdieu, as well as analyzes carried out by Graeme Kirkpatrick and Jaakko Suominen, who described how British and Finnish magazines influenced the formation of a specific discourse on video games. The relationship between the content of video game magazines and their influence on the development of the broadly understood game culture was also discussed. This book also includes a commentary on the differences between the gaming press published in Western Europe and Polish magazines created during the political transformation. It also focuses on issue of stereotypes connected with games and gamers, who formed some kind of subculture.

The book provides a theoretical overview of available maritime data sources and approaches for maritime data analysis, as well as a set of novel tools and methods for maritime data retrieval, fusion, and analysis. The proposed methods are evaluated on real-life AIS data, covering the entire world and more than 200 thousands of vessels, illustrating how they may be used for anomaly detection and risk assessment. The primary audience of the book are researchers from the fields of computer science and maritime transport as well as logistics service providers, shipping companies and port authorities companies that need support in managing security, safety, and risk of maritime transport services in global economies by making use of large-scale data processing.

National Myths in Greece

National Myths in Greece

Author(s): Hercules Millas / Language(s): English

Keywords: national myths; Greece; national psyche; modern Greek;

The national myths and the efforts to refute them are reliable sources in obtaining a holistic picture of a modern society. My starting point, which was to present the national myths in Modern Greece, turned into questioning “our human capacity” to live in a world distant from myths.A myth may mean from a “false story” to a “philosophical metaphor” and form a “lie” to a “unifying social story”. Myths are so widespread that one suspects that they constitute the norm of human existence.The whole endeavour is related to the construction of modern social identities and to the national perceptions vis-à-vis the self and the Other. The case of Greece illuminates drives that may be encountered in all present-day societies. One may read this book as a guide to get in acquaintance the Greeks, as well.

The Izanagi Motive in Haruki Murakami's Novels

Izanagiovský motiv v románech Haruki Murakamiho

Author(s): Tomáš Jurkovič / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Japanese literature; Haruki Murakami; novels;

Japanese writer Haruki Murakami is sometimes considered to be an entirely Western-literature-inspired author of “non-Japanese” texts. Such an assessment, however, needs to be rejected upon analysing Murakami’s fiction. The present study offers guidance into the colourful world of Murakami’s novels in chronological order. It presents them together in what we could call a meta-story, starting from the very beginning of Murakami’s writing and its sources of inspiration, and ending with Murakami’s first victory in dealing with his most important subject as an author – the dark sides of modern Japanese history.

Support for immigrant children’s school adaptation: Insights into Czech and Norwegian practices

Podpora školní adaptace dětí-cizinců: Náhled do české a norské praxe

Author(s): Klára Záleská / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Immigrant children; School environment for immigrant children; multi-culturality; school adaptation; equal educational opportunities;

This publication deals with the topic of adaptation of immigrant children to school, from Czech and Norwegian perspectives. The ambition of the monograph is to inspire and provide feedback to educational policymakers, teachers, and researchers, as well as to reveal in more detail the practices of one more experienced state in supporting the school adaptation of immigrant children. The author divides the text into two parts. Firstly, she looks at the topic from the theoretical perspective and in the context of existing pedagogical research. In the second part, the author presents her research survey, which looks at the topic from the perspective of three levels: state, region, and school. The survey was conceived as a qualitative comparative study based on content analysis of case studies at Czech and Norwegian primary schools. The main result is the creation of a model to support the school adaptation of immigrant children. Among other things, it points to the need to strengthen support for cooperation between the school and immigrant parents in the Czech and Norwegian environments. It also points to the regional level as a critical link mediating communication of information, knowledge, and needs between the state and school levels in the field of support for foreign children. The regional level, especially in the Czech environment, proves to be insufficiently represented in the whole process under current conditions. These and other findings prompt reflections on the importance of both so-called symbolic policy and substantive policy in the field of support for school adaptation of immigrant children, and their specific implementation in the Czech and Norwegian environments. The publication also discusses the current state of assimilation and multicultural tendencies in Czechia and Norway.

The Epilinguistic Approach of Local Teenagers towards the Linguistic Situation in Quebec

Approche épilinguistique des adolescents québécois sur la situation linguistique au Québec

Author(s): Petra Klapuchová / Language(s): French

Keywords: Epilinguistic Approach; Quebec; contemporary language situation; use of anglicisms; speech;

The main topic of this book is the empirical verification of generally widespread assumptions concerning the attitudes of young people towards the language situation in Quebec. The study, based on quantitative and qualitative research conducted throughout the province (in Gatineau, Montreal, Quebec, and Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier), analyzes data from 683 questionnaires and more than seven hours of recorded interviews. The explanatory factors considered in the analysis were age (the average age of respondents was 14.8 years), sex, and residence. The respondents were divided into three language groups to discover if monolingualism, bilingualism, or multilingualism influences the variation in their opinions.
