Author(s): Agata Zysiak,Kamil Śmiechowski,Kamil Piskała,Wiktor Marzec,Kaja Kaźmierska,Jacek Burski / Language(s): English

Keywords: Łódź City; Polish Manchester; National Capitalism; Antisemitism; Working Classes; Socialist City; City in Crisis; Modern City; Deindustrialization

This book envisions Łódź, a city in present-day central Poland, the region’s textile industrial hub, to have been the capital of the Polish 19th century. Its history is a tale of struggle with modern change in Eastern Europe. The authors boldly challenge the romantic and noble-based Polish cultural imaginary, offering instead a revolutionary path to understanding confrontation with modernity in the region. The book examines local press debates during four pivotal periods, each of which stimulated self-reflection on the idea of the modern city: – Rapid industrial growth in the tsarist borderlands; – State crafting after WWI; – Socialist restructuring after 1945; – Transition and deindustrialization after 1989. Together these insights constitute a multi-faced portrait of 20th century urban experience beyond the metropolis, in different historical contexts. This innovative, interdisciplinary work deftly integrates urban and cultural history, historical sociology and discourse research. It will be of great value to Polish and Jewish studies’ specialists, as well as those in the field of Eastern European and Slavic studies. The book also addresses core intellectual debates within urban studies, modernity studies and historical discourse analysis worldwide.

Internal Marketing in Today’s Organization

Marketing wewnętrzny we współczesnej organizacji

Author(s): Elżbieta Jadwiga Biesaga-Słomczewska,Krystyna Iwińska-Knop / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: internal marketing; human resources management; relationship marketing; value management; communications; loyality; zarządzanie ludźmi w organizacji; marketing wewnętrzny; komunikacja wewnętrzna; kultura organizacyjna; marketing personalny

Internal marketing is an interesting area of scientific reflection on the role of the human factor in building the market success of an organisation, unfortunately, so far it has not been frequently undertaken by researchers. Although its importance for the development of management sciences and business practice is undisputed, so far it has not been widely reflected in scientific literature, which results from the complicated nature of research and the need to grasp the essence of internal marketing from various points of view: psychological, sociological, economic, legal, or managerial. The perspective proposed by the author places considerations in human resources management, because the origins of the concept of internal marketing come from this area – very resistant to introducing changes, especially innovative management solutions. There are many reasons for this, one of which is the lack of expected results in the short term. The approach to the human factor is still based on the traditional perception of its roles in the organisation, which does not match the contemporary conditions resulting from the dynamics of changes in the environment. Internal marketing meets the “weaknesses” of human management, but in order for it to become effective in practice – it is necessary to verify the behaviour of both superiors and employees so far – their ways of thinking and habits leading to overcoming the previous stereotypes concerning the “employer-subordinate” relationship. This requires a marketing approach to the management instruments used to perform a personal function and the recognition of employees as internal customers, to whom the organization should identify needs and expectations in order to take adequate action leading to satisfaction, commitment and creation of loyalty to the company. Therefore, the intention of the authors was to pay special attention to innovative activities that cause proactive attitudes of employees in the scope of: building internal organisational relations, exchanging values, which the parties care about – using the negotiated dimension of agreeing on positions, methods of communication or creating value for the stakeholders. This publication is conceptual and mainly based on a critical analysis of scientific literature, taking into account the possibilities of implementing the assumptions of internal marketing in practice. It is mainly dedicated to the management staff of various levels – from managers to persons occupying the highest positions in companies, as well as to research workers, students of economic and management faculties, or sociology and psychology, and all persons whose intention is to improve their management competences.

Keywords: British Empire;British colonies;postcolonialism;colonialism;Great Britain;United Kingdom

Although the phrase “the empire on which the sun never sets” was originally used by Charles V of the House of Habsburg to refer to the beginnings of Spanish colonial expansion, it reappeared in the nineteenth century, when it came to be popularly employed in the context of the British Empire – the largest such political unit in the modern history of the world. At its height, it covered about 36 million square kilometers, or roughly a quarter of our planet's surface. The empire played a fundamental role in shaping the contemporary world, formulating the preconditions for defining the principles of democracy and international cooperation and even issues related to multiculturalism. From a paper “A Few Comments on the British Empire of Yesterday and Today” by prof. dr hab. Krystyna Kujawińska-CourtneyThe University of Łódź The interdisciplinary character of this scientific publication is its undeniable merit. Combining the reflections of literature, history and culture scholars in the book resulted in a complex and interesting work which discusses the phenomenon in question from a number of perspectives, thus becoming cognitively attractive for readers representing different interests, viewpoints and academic fields. From the review of dr hab. Aleksandra Budrewicz, prof. of Pedagogical University of Cracow

Democracy at Risk. The Growth of Nationalism and Extreme Right Parties as Threat to the EU

Author(s): Ewa Rokicka,Jeremy Leaman,Dieter Eißel / Language(s): English

Keywords: democracy; nationalism; populism; extreme-right parties; welfare state; inequality in Europe; xenophobia facing immigration

The book analyses the threats to democracy that are associated with the rise of extreme-right parties and xenophobia in European Union countries. The authors show that the growing distrust towards democratic institutions and the increasing strength of populism and nationalism are connected with persistent inequalities and the malign focus on immigrants as scapegoats for the misery. Case studies from Germany, Great Britain, and Poland examine the details of the anti-democratic movements in these countries. They demonstrate the real threats to democracy and peaceful coexistence, and to the very future of the European project, its principles of solidarity and its political ambitions of convergence through mutual support. The reader will find in the book extensive empirical material outlining the situation in the European Union, along with proposals for solving the region’s social, economic and political dilemmas, for reversing the trends of fragmentation and for revitalising Europe’s democratic culture.

Schtetl, schund, rebellion and Palestine. An anthology of Jewish literature in Łódź (1905–1939)

Sztetl, szund, bunt i Palestyna. Antologia twórczości literackiej Żydów w Łodzi (1905–1939)

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: anthology of Jewish literature;Jewish Łódź;Jewish culture;Jewish literature in Łódź;rebellion;schund;schtetl;Palestine

Texts presented in this anthology exemplify the phenomena occurring in the Jewish literature in Łódź at the turn of 20th century. They form a reflection of social and cultural changes, trends, fascinations and fears typical of a young Jewish generation living in a modern industrial metropolis. Its time frame is defined by the turn of century for two religions: the beginning is marked by 1905, a highly significant year in Łódź history, and the turn of the 20th century in the Gregorian calendar. The end is marked by 1 Tishri 5700 (14 September 1939), which is the beginning of a new century in the Hebrew calendar. The time between the Revolution of 1905 and the Shoah was a period of intensive developments in Jewish literature as well as in social life. It manifested itself through hundreds of publications, newspapers and numerous transient literary magazines – locally called “ephemerals” – each of which had an edition of only a handful of copies. A selection from a wealth of sources belonging to a different religious and cultural environment, published in various languages, was based on a specific categorization. A standard classification might not be adequate: it would carry the risk of misrepresenting the original message through the use of concepts and categories which, though present in Jewish culture and history, often failed to convey the same meaning. The adopted criteria for the choice and grouping of texts are based on four Jewish concepts, which facilitates the understanding of the cultural phenomenon of Jewish community in Łódź at the time.

The Shapes of Memory. Selected Aspects of Contemporary Art

Kształty pamięci. Wybrane zagadnienia sztuki współczesnej

Author(s): Eleonora Jedlińska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish artists; German camps; war experiences, contemporary art; extermination

The present publication, containing fourteen essays dedicated to selected artists and their work, is a structurally cohesive analysis of the phenomenon of memory of World War II experiences and the Holocaust – of trauma reflected in works of art. The works of Władysław Strzemiński, Barnett Newman, Marek Rothko, Tadeusz Kantor, Moshe Kupferman, Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, Marek Chlanda, Luc Tuymans, Zofia Lipecka, Rafał Jakubowicz and Elżbieta Janicka have been showcased. The artists presented in the volume – born around the end of the nineteenth century, during the war as well as in the 1970s – focused on an issue which became fundamental in the 20th- and 21st century art: the memory of the Holocaust catastrophe and its impact on the lives of generations born after the war. It is a book indicating the value and necessity of the existence of art, poetry and music against constant attempts to face the past, the most distant, ancient, so that this measure can translate – in the final analysis – into finding a meaning in anything precious that has survived, which in itself creates, in Benjamin Buchloh’s words, a “model of historical memory and continuity of experience.” The book’s target audience are people interested in contemporary art, wondering about the condition of man in the current reality – readers whose concern is an attempt to protect memory and rethink history.

Telling the Great Change. The Process of the Systemic Transformation in Poland in Biographical Perspective

Telling the Great Change. The Process of the Systemic Transformation in Poland in Biographical Perspective

Author(s): Kaja Kaźmierska,Katarzyna Waniek / Language(s): English

Keywords: systemic transfromation in Poland; biographical analysis; narratives; social processes; individual experiences

The book is pioneering in Poland, but also in Central Europe. It shows the mechanisms of adaptation to the systemic transformation in Poland after 1989, based on the analysis of narratives of people born in 1960, 1970 and 1980 who are representatives of diverse social milieus and have different professional and life experiences. The reader will find here a model application of the biographical research methodology developed by Fritz Schütze for a series of case studies, which makes this publication the most extensive work using the indicated method for research on transformation. The authors of the individual chapters, emphasizing the individual agency of the subjects, avoid the pitfalls of neoliberal discourse shifting responsibility for their fates onto individuals. Apart from the analysis of autonomous ways of agency, they show various potentials of losing control over one’s life, biographical trajectories, as well as biographical resources, mainly of a family nature, which serve to deal more effectively with the consequences of systemic transformation. The book has received funding from the National Science Center, Poland under grant agreement No. UMO-2013/09/B/HS6/03100 “Experience of the Process of the Transformation in Poland.A Sociological Comparative Analysis Based on Biographical Perspective”The book presents results of the research project titled: Experience of the Process of the Transformation in Poland. A Sociological Comparative Analysis Based on Biographical Perspective funded by the National Science Center in Poland (No. UMO-2013/09/B/HS6/03100). The project was conducted in the Department of Sociology of Culture (University of Łódź) in 2014–2019. The research team included: Kaja Kaźmierska (principal investigator), Katarzyna Waniek, Jacek Burski, Joanna Wygnańska (from the University of Łódź), Piotr Filipkowski (IFiS PAN) and Maciej Melon.

Author(s): Marcin Gońda / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: migration;roots migration;return migration;educational migration;diaspora;Poland;post-Soviet states;biography

Poland, having been a sending migration country for decades, is recently transforming into an immigration country. Among immigrants there is also a large youth group of Polish origin from the post-Soviet states who enrol at Polish universities. This autobiographical narrative interviews-based study attempts to apply the “roots migration” concept to the young Polish diaspora members’ educational mobility patterns. It reconstructs biographical implications of their migration to their ancestral homeland. It also analyses the impact of “roots migration” on the transformation of the students’ collective identity and sense of national belonging.

Polish war journalism – authors, genres, armed conflicts and international politics

Polskie dziennikarstwo wojenne. Twórcy, gatunki, konflikty zbrojne i polityka międzynarodowa

Author(s): Zbigniew Bednarek / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: international relations; war, war journalism; war correspondent; media and war; military press officer; army and media

The publication is part of the study of international relations in the context of their relations with the media and journalists, especially war journalism. The historical and political background of wars outlined in the publication, combined with the analysis of journalistic presentations of wars, reveals a point of contact between international politics and societies and the media. In the monograph, each time outlining the political and historical background of wars, over 40 journalistic war reports published in book form were analyzed, from 9 wars, conducted since 1918 until the beginning of the 21st century, in various parts of the world (Europe, Africa, Indochina, the Caucasus, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan). In addition, the study presents the work of journalists during the war over the years, the tradition of war relations since antiquity and its status in global journalism, the definition and typology of war correspondents, and issues of sources, professional ethics, documentary value of reports, as well as war propaganda and ways of influencing the recipients. A significant amount of space in the work is devoted to military announcements and reports from the Polish-Bolshevik war to the peace mission and stabilization mission at the turn of the 20th and 21st century, as well as the work of press officers of the Polish Army.

‘Troublesome’ bodies. Strategies of depicting physical ‘abnormality’ in contemporary fiction film

„Kłopotliwe” ciała. Strategie przedstawiania fizycznej „anormalności” we współczesnym filmie fikcji

Author(s): Adam Cybulski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: body; contemporary film; stigma; ‘abnormality’; strategies of depicting; visual attraction

Within disability studies, discipline developing for the last thirty years, subject of particular interest were audio-visual representations of physical ‘abnormality’. However, in scientific literature it is storyline and generally understood occurrences that are analysed: personal traits of disabled protagonist, his or her social status, actions, introspections or his or her relationship with the society. The question of stylistic and narration devices, and the aesthetics of display-oriented construction of defectiveness are usually not taken into consideration. In order to add to and broaden this perspective author of this dissertation used selected methods of Neoformalism and Cognitive film theory. Strategy of narration, diegetic dominant and viewer engagement helped in exhibiting how defective bodies were used as visual attractions, distinguishing four modes of contemporary storytelling discussed in context of a long tradition of portraying visible dissimilarities and explaining methods of managing ‘troublesome’ bodies with instances of narrating.

God, Cosmos and Man in the "Corpus Hermeticum" on the Background of Greek Philosophical Tradition.

Bóg – świat – człowiek w traktatach "Corpus Hermeticum" na tle greckiej tradycji filozoficzne

Author(s): Aneta Tylak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Corpus Hermeticum; hermetism; Hermes Trismegistos; Greek philosophy

This study fits into the field of modern research on the issue of ancient hermetism. Its subject is the analysis, on the background of earlier philosophical tradition, of the way of depiction of three terms, viz. god, world, and human, in the seventeen Greek treatises belonging to the collection Corpus Hermeticum. The main part of this book consists of three chapters devoted to presentation and a thorough cross-sectional analysis, of three subsequent terms the “hermetic triad” consists of. Conclusions drawn from the analysis of the treaties included in the Corpus Hermeticum allow the examined collection to be classified as syncretic writings, which frequently do not show cohesion and consistency. Although it is hard to talk about a hermetic theology, cosmology, or anthropology sensu stricto, upon reading the said treaties, quite firm bases of these concepts can be established - namely ideas which recur throughout all, (or almost all) treaties, despite the fact that they unfold differently or do not unfold at all. Corpus Hermeticum is a collection of treaties in which a syncretic philosophical thought prevails, and in which the beliefs held by Plato, Aristotle and the stoics come into the forefront. The second part of this book comprises original Greek texts of Corpus Hermeticum with the first complete Polish translation.

Urban regeneration and its impact on the city economy – a case study

Rewitalizacja i jej wpływ na gospodarkę miasta – studium przypadków

Author(s): Ewa M. Boryczka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: urban regeneration; post-industrial city; industrial city; economic base; city economy; economic transformation of cities; urban functions

Polish experience to date in planning comprehensive functional and spatial transformations and urban regeneration of cities is already considerable, however due to the fact that those processes require large financial outlays and integrated activities in many spheres of city functioning, their implementation is slow. The process of systemic transformation caused great degradation of urban space, especially industrial space, and resulted in significant negative changes in the economic structure. Local authorities have at their disposal a wide range of instruments in the field of urban regeneration policy and can actively shape the urban regeneration process. Local authorities try to. The theory of the economic base, which is connected with the definition of the role of the so-called exogenous and endogenous factors of city development, is helpful in explaining functional and economic changes in cities. The main subject of this book is the urban regeneration processes in post-industrial cities and the resulting transformations in the economic structure and the economic base. The main objective of the monograph was to identify the impact of urban regeneration processes in post-industrial cities on the transformation of their economic base. The specific objectives were:• to identify the effects of urban regeneration activities,• to assess the range and scale of instruments used in the urban regeneration process• to capture the processes of transformation of the functional structure of cities during the transformation period • identification of the influence of the urban regeneration process on the transformation of the economic base of the city. The monograph consists of four chapters. The first chapter discusses the development and transformation of industrial cities, the issue of urban regeneration and its links with the urban economy. The chapter closes with a consideration of the links between urban regeneration processes and the transformation of the economic base of cities, and ways of measuring it. The next three chapters are case studies of selected cities. The chapters present empirically obtained characteristics of the examined cities (including characteristics of the socio-economic transformation process and urban regeneration needs, the urban regeneration policy and its effects, the planning process of the urban regeneration process, the implementation and the instruments used). The chapters present the changes in the economic structure of individual cities as a result of the urban regeneration process and the transformation of their economic base. In conclusion, an attempt is made to synthesise and evaluate the effectiveness of the urban regeneration processes in the economic transformation of the examined cities.

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: city; participation; citizens’ assembly; climate change; greenhouse gases; urban climate policy; natural capital; sustainable transport; circular economy; construction; energy

Today, cities and their inhabitants play a key role in the context of anthropogenic climate change. On the one hand, cities are the nexus of the problem, as they contribute to significant greenhouse gas emissions; on the other hand, they represent a tremendous opportunity to reverse these negative processes, as they can, and should, be an area for the implementation of many innovative solutions and strategies to reduce emissions and adapt to a changing climate. Urban residents can play an active role in building climate neutrality of urban areas through their daily choices, behaviour, education, social engagement and influence on political processes. Public participation is crucial to the creation of urban climate policies, to achieve the goals of the continuous fight against a changing climate and to create more sustainable urban communities. It is an important aspect of environmental action because it allows for the inclusion of people's diverse perspectives, needs and experiences. In addition, the integration of the local community, business, academia and policy makers is nowadays key to creating effective urban policies moving towards climate neutrality. The book "Public participation in urban climate policy making. The example of Łódź." which is the result of cooperation between scientists and practitioners from various scientific centres and cities as well as representatives of local government administration, is addressed to all those for whom cities are a common good and, despite many noticeable shortcomings, are and will remain for many more years the only living environment.

Private life of Poles in the 19th century. Laughter, humour, satire. Volume 12

Życie prywatne Polaków w XIX wieku. Śmiech, humor, satyra. Tom 12

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: humor; śmiech; satyra; XIX wiek; sarkazm; mężczyzna; kobieta; prasa satyryczna; satyra polityczna

Przeciwnie, humor, umiejętność prowadzenia dowcipnych konwersacji i zabawnych ripost były wysoko cenioną cechą mieszkańców ziem polskich. Humor i satyra pozwalały na oswojenie trudnej rzeczywistości i nierzadko stawały się formą oporu wobec autorytarnych systemów zaborczych. Śmiech stanowił narzędzie wyrażające cały wachlarz emocji: od radości i akceptacji po ironię, kpinę, szyderstwo, negację. Był to ważny i ceniony komponent „towarzyskości”. Przez szkiełko ironii obserwowano zmieniającą się rzeczywistość: wynalazki, innowacje techniczne, rozwój kolei, przenikające z Zachodu trendy kulturowe, modę, emancypację kobiet, ruchy polityczne i społeczne. W satyrze przedstawiano również trudne warunki egzystencjalne. Śmiech niwelował strach, krzepił Polaków w obliczu trudnych sytuacji, jednoczył. W prezentowanym tomie zachęcamy do spojrzenia na życie prywatne dziewiętnastowiecznych Polaków „cum humor”. Książka ukazuje, co w dziewiętnastym stuleciu Polaków bawiło, z czego żartowano, jakie były formy i rodzaje żartu, jakie zdarzenia prezentowano w obiektywie satyry, wreszcie jaką rolę odgrywały żart, dowcip, anegdota, satyra w życiu codziennym, prywatnym i publicznym.

Methods and techniques of public consultation

Metody i techniki prowadzenia konsultacji społecznych

Author(s): Kamil Brzeziński,Agnieszka Kretek-Kamińska,Aneta Krzewińska,Julia Zając / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: research techniques; public consultation; participation

The problems faced by individuals responsible for conducting social consultations are quite common, regardless of the consultation's subject, the type of institution or the locality organizing it. This publication describes these problems and proposes solutions. The authors are sociologists specializing in the methodology of social research, with experience in planning and conducting consultations and analyzing their results in collaboration with local governments, state institutions, non-governmental organizations, universities, cultural institutions, and informal groups.Readers interested in the issues of social consultations will receive not only practical guidance on specific consultation tools, but also an explanation of why certain actions are better performed in a particular way. An additional advantage is a meta-analysis of consultation methods and techniques, as well as a review of examples of innovative and common practices. All of this is filtered through methodological rules. The authors do not only present various consultation techniques and tools, but also propose a new classification of these techniques, grouping them based on several essential dimensions: the way consultation participants' statements are recorded and the nature of the conclusions drawn, standardization of procedures, requirements for organizers and participants, relations between them, or consultation procedures.Although practitioners of consultations can benefit from this book, it still maintains a scientific character. The discussed issues are approached systematically, methodically, critically and comprehensively, serving as an impetus for scientific reflections, in-depth studies, or research projects.

Determinants of non-cash turnover in the European Union countries on the example of payment cards

Determinanty obrotu bezgotówkowego w krajach Unii Europejskiej na przykładzie kart płatniczych

Author(s): Marlena Grzelczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: payment cards; non-cash payments; economic determinants; non-economic determinants; ubanking

Research devoted to the determinants of cashless payments is an important issue from a financial point of view. The spread of cashless trading benefits participants in the payment system, including consumers and businesses, and ultimately the economy as a whole.Because of the benefits of cashless trading, it was important to recognize the determinants of cashless trading. The monograph took as its main objective the identification and evaluation of the impact of key factors on cashless turnover using payment cards, and their empirical verification on a macro-scale for the period 2004–2022.The empirical study conducted at the macro-scale level – with the help of econometric modeling – allowed the identification of statistically significant key economic and non-economic variables, including sociodemographic, cultural and payment infrastructure-related variables at the macro-scale, some of which were common to the EU-15 and EU-13 group of countries, which provided the basis for verifying the main hypothesis. Knowledge of the determinants of non-cash trade is an important element in the formation of monetary policy and is a valuable source of information in making strategic decisions on non-cash trade and the payment system. This information is important for the economy, but also for payment market stakeholders, who need reliable statistical data in order to be able to compare the level of development of the payment system with other countries. Recognizing the determinants of cashless payments is the focus of central banks, payment organizations, commercial banks – payment card issuers, clearing agents, merchants, IT institutions that support the introduction of innovative solutions in payments.

Building relationships in the probation officers’ supervisions. Field work

Budowanie relacji w nadzorach kuratorskich. Praca w terenie

Author(s): Katarzyna Miśkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: family probation officer; field work; social rehabilitation; qualitative analysis; ethnography; participant observation

The aim of the study, presented in the monograph was reconstruction of the interaction rituals disclosed by family probation officers in relationships with supervisees at their homes. Whilst working during supervised families’ everyday activities. The theoretical inspirations were determined by the assumptions of symbolic interactionism. The guiding principle were Erving Goffman’s dramaturgy and theory of interaction rituals. My analysis also included the concept of “dirty work”, assuming certain professions face physical, social, moral, and emotional burdens. The focus of my research was the family probation officer’s activities with supervisees in their natural living environment to accomplish professional goals. The primary research strategy was ethnography and grounded methodology procedures was a matrix for analysing and interpreting empirical material. I used in the research open participant observation and ethnographic, informal (conversational) and unstructured interviews. In the results of my own research, I considered the characteristics of the probation officer’s working area and coping mechanisms for the area-specific workload. I also emerged strategies for probatory supervision management which revealed a specific duality of the professional role of a family probation officer. Moreover, I illustrated talking strategies as the dominating component of the professional relationship.
