Higher education costs

Koszty kształcenia wyższego

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: higher education; education costs; educational services market

Costs related to undertaking studies are one of the less studied aspects of the growing interest in higher education in Poland. Every year, hundreds of thousands of households in Poland allocate considerable funds for this purpose. In order to continue their education, young people not only invest heavily, but also often postpone the decision to enter the labor market, and thus lose the income from work that they could obtain by becoming professionally active after graduating from secondary school. At the same time, significant funds for higher education are allocated by the state. The presented results of the analyzes were prepared as part of the research project "Social and economic determinants of study choices of people aged 19–30", carried out by a team from the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw on behalf of the Educational Research Institute. The authors identify the mechanisms involved in contacts between the four main stakeholders of the higher education process: public and private universities, students (and their households) and the state. Using the latest methodological approaches in the field of experimental economics and conditional choice, they attempt to measure the size, structure and differentiation of higher education costs from the perspective of both the student and the university.

Between Conflict and Coexistence. Natal and Zululand in 1824–1856

Między konfliktem a koegzystencją. Natal i Zululand w latach 1824–1856

Author(s): Michał Leśniewski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: South Africa; history; KwaZulu-Natal; Zulu; Boer; British

The book depicts the history of Southern Africa in a transition period, after the arrival of Europeans but before they became a dominant power in the region. It is a history in which Africans are still partners, not victims, and shape local realities not less than the newcomers. At the same time, it is a presentation of the process which led to the rise of the colonial order, albeit not yet in its final form. It shows the transformation of mutual relations but also of the regional balance of power.

Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Writings and Documents. Minutes of Cabinet Meetings 1989–1991

Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Pisma i dokumenty. Protokoły posiedzeń rządu 1989–1991

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Tadeusz Mazowiecki; systemic transition; Third Polish Republic

Tadeusz Mazowiecki (1927–2013), the first non-communist prime minister of Poland after the Second World War, was undoubtedly a major figure of Polish political life of the second half of the twentieth century. This has spurred the initiative to compile a multi-volume edition of Mazowiecki’s scattered writings and documents connected with him, which would encompass the entirety of his time as a social and political activist. The minutes of Tadeusz Mazowiecki’s cabinet meetings comprise the second volume in a series of writings and documents associated with this politician, being published since 2023 by the University of Warsaw Press in cooperation with the University of Warsaw’s Tadeusz Mazowiecki Chair and Faculty of Political Science and International Relations. The publication coincides with the thirty-fifth anniversary of the swearing in of the first non-communist cabinet in post-War World Two Poland. This is the first time the minutes are presented to the public. A matter-of-fact, minimalistic record of key tasks faced and decisions made captures the character of the government’s meetings and workings. The minutes document the scale and pace of the introduced changes, showing what and when most important at a time when everything was changing and every change mattered. They trace the emergence of a democratic state after decades of authoritarian rule and of a free-market economy replacing a communist economy of scarcity. They detail all major international dealings of the cabinet, and are a source of information about present-day institutions, then in the making. Mazowiecki’s government laid foundations for a new Polish statehood – in a country devastated economically and politically by almost half a century of communist rule. It transitioned Poland from authoritarianism to democracy, and its economy from inefficient systemic poverty to free market. These reforms were not perfect, but they were revolutionary, though implemented in an evolutionary fashion. The fifteen months of Mazowiecki’s government proved enough to begin strategic changes in all areas of Polish life, changes that would be continued afterwards. They were not enough, however, for all these changes to be completed under Mazowiecki’s government – even though it is this government that was blamed for the errors and mistakes of the systemic transition, not its critics and successors. Tadeusz Mazowiecki was a man who attached great importance to the world of values. He perceived politics as acting for the sake of the common good. Today this no longer is a feature associated with politicians. This is all the more reason to offer a reminder that there was a time when politics could be done differently, and that this time was not that long ago.

The Figures of Misfits in French and Francophone Literature from The Middle Ages to the 21st Century

Figury odmieńców w literaturze francuskiej i frankofońskiej od średniowiecza do XXI wieku

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: other; stranger; exclusion; marginality; peripheries; French literature; francophone literature

A collection of translations of French and francophone literary texts, showing different types of misfits from the Middle Ages to the 21st century and including both short stories and fragments of novels, as well as letters, fragments of journals or accounts of travels. Some of the authors themselves are different and through literature are able to find the opportunity to speak with their own voice, others use their voice to transmit exclusion. The texts, on the one hand, enable the reader to hear what is usually suppressed as it does not belong to the dominant discourse, and on the other hand, allow to capture the mechanism of creating otherness through discourse.
