A mystical revolutionary discourse was created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries by intellectuals representing various worldviews and political beliefs – from the ethical anarchism of Gustav Landauer through the scholarly esotericism of Erich Gutkind and the Prussian conservativism of Florens Christian Range.This book is an attempt to reconstruct this discourse on the basis of texts which in many cases are not widely available and are rarely discussed, as for example, the writings of a group known as the Forte Circle – a utopian community of spiritual leaders of humanity proclaimed on the eve of the First World War.In seeking a remedy for alienation and a sense of meaninglessness the authors discussed in the book turn not only to Nietzsche and contemporary literature, but also to Jewish mysticism and the writings of Meister Eckhart, and they propose as an alternative to Postkantian philosophy and a scientific vision of the world the “mystical” model of knowledge as act. Among its propositions are: the questioning of the language of “objective” meanings and concepts in the name of the principle of performatism, the messianic deconstruction (“sacrifice”) of the cognitive and ethical subject, an antihistorical theory of history – stressing its discontinuity and existential dimension, and the epiphanic hermeneutic of metaphorized reality.Direct references to these themes can be found both in the concept of “conservative revolution” propounded by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and in various philosophers associated with the left - György Lukács, Ernst Bloch and Walter Benjamin.The book is in German.

Between the Cataracts, Part Two: Session Papers (fasc. 1-2) completes the publication of the proceedings of the 11th Conference of Nubian Studies that was held at the University of Warsaw in 2006.It follows in the wake of the first volume of the proceedings which included the main papers read at the conference.The Session Papers reflect the richness of periods and topics that were discussed: from the Paleolithic to the Fung Sultanate of Sennar and from Prehistory through the Kerma, Napata and Meroe civilizations and the post-Meroe and Christian kingdoms. The publication presents the results of research completed within the ‘Coins of the Roman Republic in Central Europe’ project implemented at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw. The author discusses the coins of the Roman Republic found in East-Central Europe north of the Sudetes and the Carpathian mountains (the territories of Poland, western Belarus and western Ukraine) – issues from the period of the first Roman emissions until 27 BC.The region of interest was never a part of the Roman state. This means that all of the Roman coins found in this territory must be treated as imports. The main aim of this study is to specify the time, causes, circumstances and directions of the import of Republican coinage to the study area, and to determine its uses in this region.The book contains the inventory of the finds with a comprehensive commentary. It is both numismatic and archaeological in its subject matter, placing itself somewhere on the border between these two disciplines.
