Experiencing Time in the Archives

Doświadczanie czasu w przestrzeni archiwum

Author(s): Danuta Ulicka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: archive; memory of culture; space-time of literary criticism; scientific circles of Polish philology students; literary terms

The main problem discussed in the book is the experience of time deposited in the memory of culture – its texts, pre-texts and “beyond-texts” collected in archives. Memory is accompanied – also on a cultural scale – by forgetting. Both of these integrally connected processes determine the topicality of past knowledge and its falling out of the currently dominant circuits, and sometimes unexpected returns. The subsequent chapters of the book, devoted to “oldvators” of literary criticism (mainly Mikhail Bakhtin, Roman Ingarden and Roman Jakobson), ask about their presence and the importance of their achievements today. The analyses of this unusual phenomenon on the Central and Eastern European scale – student scientific circles in which modern literary studies were born – serve to recover past perfect and transform it into past imperfect. Such a phenomenon are also literary terms born in the first decades of the 20th century, whose circulation in the world, penetration into the neighboring disciplines, semantic (and even name) shifts allow to trace not only the changing story of literary research, but also to ask a question about its identity. This identity, although seemingly unstable, as shown by studies spanning the entire century, appears to be surprisingly steady.

Meeting with the world. Essays on global history

Spotkanie ze światem. Eseje o historii globalnej

Author(s): Patrick Boucheron,Nicolas Delalande / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: global history; Eurocentric narrative

A collection of essays published as part of the prestigious French series La Vie des idées. Polish edition supplemented with an essay on Polish history by Jerzy Pysiak. Texts included in a volume providing, with an expanding primary source, Anglo-Saxon, historiography, used for global action. On the one hand, the basic postulates of global history, such as a departure from the Eurocentric narrative (as e.g. in the essay about the conversation between the Dutch and the Javanese), on the other - express concerns about whether the new fashions in talking about history, which are always superficial and ideologically defined, will result in the application of the principles of validity of the historian's scientific workshop.

Urban Silver Singles in Poland

Miejscy srebrni single w Polsce

Author(s): Tomasz Zalega / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: silver singles; singlization; consumption; consumer behaviour; consumer trends; Poland; family; household

The monograph takes a closer look at the phenomenon of consumption and consumer behaviour of single older people and provides extremely valuable information for businesses and government economic, social and cultural policies. The study provides a deeper understanding of the behaviour of single older people in the market and the resulting micro- and macroeconomic consequences. The author of the publication clearly explains the reasons for the progressive singlization of societies and the essence of singlism and the consequences of discrimination against people living alone. He also introduces the reader to the basics of single-person households, their housing conditions, material situation or expenditure structure of people living alone, with particular emphasis on expenditure on food and health care. The monograph closes with a chapter devoted to selected new consumer trends and their purchasing behaviour, in which a successful attempt is made to identify typological groups of silver singles as consumers. The content of the monograph and the knowledge it contains may be useful to all those who are interested in the demographic issues taking place in Polish society, and in particular in elderly single people and their consumer behaviour.

The author observes the dilemmas, hopes and fears of scientists present in their everyday research work over the centuries, and proves that it is impossible to understand the history of science and research practices without considering the figure of a scientist, perceived not so much as a fully rational subject, but as constantly tormented by conflicting emotions and desires.

The Strategic Challenges of the Eastern Neighbourhood. The Republic of Poland and the Republic of Belarus in the Years 1991–2022

Strategiczne wyzwania wschodniego sąsiedztwa. Rzeczpospolita Polska i Republika Białoruś w latach 1991-2022

Author(s): Maciej Mróz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: migration crisis; dictatorship; diplomacy; Poland; Belarus; Polish-Belarusian relations

The book is the first comprehensive attempt to present complex problems in the Polish-Belarusian relations embedded in a broad international context. Political changes and the transition in Central and Eastern Europe after 1989 initiated the establishment of diplomatic relations with the countries of the former Eastern bloc as well as with those which regained independence after the fall of the Soviet Union. In this group of issues, the relations with Belarus did not come to the forefront, and their subsequent phases were characterized by alternating attempts at dialogue, interspersed with periods of regression and mutual suspicion. The most dramatic period was from 2020 to 2023, when Belarus, inspired by Russia, caused a migration crisis on the border with Poland, and then became involved in the Kremlin war against Ukraine.

Kant wobec judaizmu i chrześcijaństwa na tle oświecenia niemieckiego

Author(s): Wojciech Kozyra / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Kant; Enlightenment; Judeo-Christianity; Judaism; Marcionism; Haskalah

The author discusses the common belief that Kant, rejecting Judaism as the beginning of Christian sacred history, thus denying his organic connection with Christianity, essentially represented the standard view of his era. Contrary to this thesis, he proves that against the background of Enlightenment theology and philosophy, the Kantian concept was atypical or, at the most, radicalized certain marginal tendencies within the German Enlightenment.

Cities in the Shadow of Pandemic and Climate Crisis. New quality of space and reality

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: cities; COVID-19 pandemic; climate changes; urban spaces; urban greenery

The authors of this monograph delve into an analysis of the impacts and consequences of diverse crises on cities, exploring the responses and adaptive mechanisms crucial for navigating challenges and fostering development, even in crisis conditions. The publication specifically addresses such issues as the spatial ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g. effects on urban spatial policies, the informational layer of cities, resident behaviour, and the informal labour market), cities’ strategies in addressing the climate crisis (e.g. urban agriculture, the creation of green urban spaces), contemporary concepts of city development aimed at enhancing the quality of life (e.g. functional mix, walkable city, New Urbanism), and crises from a regional perspective (e.g. flood threats). The authors present diverse viewpoints and employ various research methods, exploring cities in Europe and the Americas to highlight both differences and universal challenges. This monograph is the culmination of extensive collaboration among scholars from the University of Warsaw and universities in Latin America, including Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, Universidad Mexiquense del Bicentenario, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico, and Universidad de los Llanos in Colombia. The authors address Irzykowski’s discussions with Marxism, his polemics critical of the Jews (the circle of “Wiadomości Literackie”), his attitude to the Polish Academy of Literature. The last bloc of texts is devoted to a unique clercism of the writer and the solitude resulting from it, shown against the background of other models of clercism in the context of literary geography and Irzykowski's accusations of anti-Semitism.

Young Poland is one of the most popular periods of our history of arts. It is evidenced by a multitude of scientific studies, artists’ monographs, exhibitions, albums. Looking further, however, one might notice countless white spots, forgotten or yet undiscovered phenomena, especially outside of the mainstream of “big names” and important centres. Immeasurable as of yet, field of marginalia requires constant exploration, profound look into then popular painting, social and economic functioning of the world of arts (including graphics and architecture), writing of creators that are not necessarily considered critics or art theoreticians till this day.

Precarious Lives on Both Sides of the San. Memories of the Last Generation of Witnesses to World War Two and the Post-War Period

Kruche życia po obu stronach Sanu. Wspomnienia ostatniego pokolenia świadków II wojny światowej i powojnia

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: war; memory; violence; Polish-Ukrainian borderland; historical anthropology; San

The book touches upon issues largely absent from the usual nation-centred historiography. The authors describe life in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, laying bare the mechanisms that led to the collapse of pre-war social order and scrutinizing the survival strategies used by the local population, one of which was the labile recourse to ethnic identity depending on the situation at hand. The book offers a multifaceted insight into the dynamic of social relations in the period’s countryside, including the situation of women and the attitudes towards the civilian population on the part of partisans from different formations. Much attention is devoted to child witnesses of violence and the specificity of the memory stemming from those experiences. Also discussed is the perception that today’s inhabitants of the region have of their local identity as well as the role played in the processes of remembering and recalling the past by the material surroundings.
