- Summary/Abstract:The article reflects on the origins, development, and scientific condition of the European Association for the Sociology of Sport (EASS) over the first quarter of the 21st century (2001–2025), with particular emphasis on significant Polish contributions to the Association’s activities. The starting point is the 21st EASS Conference held in Warsaw, which inspired a reminiscence-based analysis of the institutionalization of sport sociology in Europe. The author reconstructs the founding circumstances of EASS, highlighting the role of the Warsaw University of Physical Education and the personal involvement in shaping the theoretical and organizational foundations of the Association. The paper also discusses the structure and international character of EASS, the importance of its annual scientific conferences, and the role of the European Journal for Sport and Society as a major platform for disseminating research in the social sciences of sport. The second part of the article addresses universal methodological issues in scientific research, focusing on the role of hypotheses, the relationship between general and specific methodologies, and the importance of epistemic rigor. The discussion is complemented by a reflection on hermeneutic aspects of scholarly inquiry, pointing to their potential applicability in social research on sport. The article combines documentary, methodological, and reflective perspectives, contributing to broader debates on the social role of sport and sport sciences.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper orders the four stages of the genesis of the subject’s sense of identity. The text also provides a phenomenological perspective on the relationship between human corporeality and awareness. The fundamental difference between the sense of identity and identity is that identity always belongs to the subject but is stated by someone else whereas the sense of identity is only available to the subject. In the paper, we demonstrate that this understanding of the subject and his or her epistemic possibilities is possible with phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty and Sartre.

- Keywords:hygiene; motoric system; physical activity; physical fitness
- Summary/Abstract:This text presents a concept for approaching selected forms of physical activity in terms of hygiene. The concept of musculoskeletal hygiene is defined, its subject matter, scope, and application are identified. A broad justification is presented, highlighting the advantages of formally classifying some forms of physical activity and exercises as hygiene, thus framing them in the context of culture. Formally classifying physical activity as hygiene opens a new perspective on the approach to certain forms of physical activity by invoking culture-forming mechanisms. Defining the area of hygiene in relation to the musculoskeletal system offers the opportunity for a significant change in the approach to physical activity itself. This is justified by the special position of hygiene as a regulator of human behavior. Hygiene, especially personal hygiene, is perceived by society as a highly unambiguous sanction – its absence is extremely negative.

- Summary/Abstract:Sport plays an important role in shaping the personality of children and youth. The basic values of sport include: justice, respect, honesty and friendship for the opponent, word culture, composure, discipline, duty, perseverance, respect for the fair play principle, etc. In order for such values to be passed on to young players, the work of the coach is important ‒ his / her competences, both specialist and psychological and pedagogical, as well as personality traits. This paper attempts to indicate (as part of a pilot study) the educational role of sport on the example of the opinions and statements of four amateur boxers and two coaches from Łódź and Ozorków. The research, conducted at the turn of 2021 and 2022, used the diagnostic survey method with the interview technique and two tools – interview questionnaires addressed to boxing players and coaches. Based on the collected research material, it can be concluded that the trainer in the training process can play a very important educational role. For them, a trainer is an inspiring, motivating, helpful, educating and, above all, friendly person. By the surveyed players, the coach was identified as a member of the family. The trainers themselves were aware that they played a very important role in the lives of their charges, which may mean that when planning the training process, they did not forget about its educational impact.

- Subject(s):Social Sciences, Education, School education, Pedagogy
- Page Range:71-82
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:physical activity; martial arts; perfectionism; mindfulness
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents associations of marital arts with perfectionism and mindfulness. Two hypotheses were put forward: (1) Practitioners of martial arts are characterised by a higher level of personal standards compared with a physically inactive group as well as participants in individual and team sports. (2) Practitioners of martial arts are characterised by a higher level of mindfulness compared with a physically inactive group as well as representatives of physical individual and team activities. In order to test the hypotheses a research was conducted on a group of 158 individuals aged 18–60. One-way analysis of variance and a priori comparisons (contrasts) were used. Both hypotheses were partially confirmed. The results suggest that sport training, regardless of the discipline practiced, raises personal standards due to its perfectionistic nature (challenging yourself and overcoming your own weaknesses). The results also indicate the validity of distinguishing martial arts as specific physical activities that improve mindfulness, which is necessary for an adequate and flexible response to the opponent’s movement.

- Summary/Abstract:This article presents considerations regarding the educational benefits of horse riding. The paper attempts to analyse the relationship between the form of horse riding practised and the perception of the psycho-pedagogical values of this activity among people who take up horse riding in the Lodz Province. The research was conducted in early 2024 using the MS Forms online form. A diagnostic survey and questionnaire technique were used to collect the research material. The study involved 124 riders attending horse riding classes at several equestrian centres in the Lodz Province and secondary school students studying horse breeding in Łódź and Wolbórz. The collected material was subjected to statistical analysis using the chi-square test. The results of the study indicate that the riders surveyed notice a positive impact of horse riding on their well-being. The respondents also noticed that horse riding shapes a person’s character in a certain way. The characteristics most often mentioned as being shaped by horse riding include patience, responsibility and perseverance in pursuing goals. Respondents also indicate that horse riding can teach people to control their emotions. Statistical analysis of the data confirmed the existence of statistically significant differences in the perception of the psycho-pedagogical benefits of horse riding depending on the form of equestrian activity practised (recreational or competitive).

- Summary/Abstract:The study was a controlled experiment lasting 14 weeks and concerned the evaluation of the effectiveness of an innovative educational intervention using the “Green Prescription” in promoting physical activity (PA) during leisure time among young people aged 15–17 (n = 148). The intervention was applied to three risk groups with insufficient PA levels: adolescents who were overweight (group A, n = 31); excessive electronic device users (B, n = 40); and those with low social support (C, n = 37). The control group (D, n = 40) consisted of students with sufficient PA, without intervention. The experiment included: a 7-day preliminary measurement, a 12-week intervention, and a 7-day final measurement. The subjective level of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was assessed using the Prochaska et al. test, and objective PA data (distance covered in kilometres) was recorded using a Huawei Watch Fit SE wristband. The results showed an increase in MVPA and distance covered in all intervention groups: MVPA – A (2.53 ± 1.52 → 4.05 ± 1.37 days/week), B (2.81 ± 1.21 → 3.60 ± 1.43), C (2.84 ± 1.52 → 3.74 ± 1.40); distance – A (3.76 ± 1.53 → 8.51 ± 3.11 km/day), B (4.12 ± 2.13 → 8.47 ± 2.67), C (4.63 ± 2.76 → 8.91 ± 1.46). At the same time, the control group showed a decrease in MVPA (5.53 ± 0.84 → 4.96 ± 1.18) and distance covered (6.87 ± 2.38 → 6.85±3.10). The “Green Prescription” proved to be an effective tool in supporting the health-promoting PA of young people from risk groups, which indicates its potential in prevention and health promotion.

- Author(s):Paulina Maternia
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Social Sciences, Education, School education, Pedagogy
- Page Range:179-188
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:self-esteem; pre-performance anxiety; modern dance; sport psychology; mental preparation
- Summary/Abstract:The literature on the subject includes information regarding the importance of self- esteem and pre-performance anxiety in sports activities. It turns out that a certain level of self-esteem can help athletes cope with stress in competitive situations, increase their effectiveness, and influence the level of pre-performance anxiety. The aim of the study was to capture the relationship between the level of pre-performance anxiety and self-esteem among dancers from Prima Dance Academy in Rzeszów. The study included 61 individuals aged 11–20 who trained modern dance at the Prima Dance Academy in Rzeszów. The participants’ training experience ranged from 0.5 to 13 years. The analysis included both dancers who participated in sports competitions and those who had not competed. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES) and Martens’ Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) were used for measurement. The data were subjected to statistical analysis using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Most dancers demonstrated an average level of self-esteem (67%) and an average level of pre-performance anxiety (57%). A statistically significant negative correlation was found between self-esteem and pre-performance anxiety (ρ = –0.293; p = 0.022). This indicates that higher self-esteem is associated with lower anxiety levels. The analysis of the results suggests that self-esteem plays an important role in the intensity of pre-performance anxiety experienced. In coaching practice, it is advisable to undertake activities aimed at strengthening dancers’ self-worth, particularly among those with lower self-esteem. It is also recommended to implement mental training as an important tool in the pre-performance preparation process. These actions may contribute to an increase in self-esteem, which in turn may reduce anxiety levels and improve competitive performance.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Social Sciences, Education, School education, Pedagogy
- Page Range:199-209
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:health; disease; osteopathy; salutogenesis; holism
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to analyse various definitions of health and disease from philosophical, biomedical, and holistic perspectives, and to relate them to the theory and practice of osteopathy. The study outlines the evolution of the concept of health – from negative, reductionist models based on the absence of pathology, through positive approaches that define health as dynamic well-being and adaptive capacity (e.g., Antonovsky’s salutogenesis), to contemporary biopsychosocial and enactive frameworks. Particular attention is given to philosophical interpretations of health in the works of Aristotle, Spinoza and Deleuze, which present health as a process of harmonising relations between body, mind, and environment. Against this background, the principles of osteopathy are discussed as a discipline focused on supporting the body’s self-regulatory mechanisms and restoring internal balance. The paper argues that integrating positive definitions of health into osteopathic practice enables a shift from a strictly disease-centred paradigm towards an approach focused on human potential, agency, and quality of life.

- Subject(s):Social Sciences, Education, School education, Pedagogy
- Page Range:213-218
- No. of Pages:6
- Keywords:violence in sport; aggression; self-violence; sport regulations; philosophy of sport
- Summary/Abstract:The article serves as a prolegomena to further research on violence in sport, with particular emphasis on its positive and often overlooked aspects. The author challenges the dominant legal, academic, and common-sense understanding of violence as an inherently negative and socially harmful phenomenon. A distinction between aggression and violence is proposed, showing that in sport‒during training, competition, and related activities‒violence may assume necessary, rule-governed, and even desirable forms. Special attention is given to regulatory violence, self-directed violence (auto-violence), and psychological violence, which may contribute to athletic success, volitional mobilization, and enhanced motivation. The paper also highlights the ambivalent nature of violence and its social, cultural, and individual determinants. The analysis is situated within the framework of sport sciences and the philosophy of sport, with reference to legal norms and sport regulations.
