Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyze the preferences and engagement of Bavarian school youth in recreational sport, with particular emphasis on gender differences and the size of place of residence. The study was conducted among high school students in large and small cities in Bavaria using a diagnostic survey method with a questionnaire technique. The results indicate that the majority of respondents report a positive attitude toward physical education and sport, with a clear predominance among boys, who also show a much stronger preference for an active way of spending free time. The preferred place of sport for the boys turned out to be sports clubs, whereas girls mainly prefer exercising individually or with friends and family. Furthermore, residents of small towns more often choose extracurricular sports activities at school. Gender was also a significant factor differentiating preferences regarding favorite sports disciplines. For boys, the most important were football and cycling, while for girls it was cycling and horse riding.
