Analysis of the Definitions of Health and Disease in the Context of Osteopathic Theory

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse various definitions of health and disease from philosophical, biomedical, and holistic perspectives, and to relate them to the theory and practice of osteopathy. The study outlines the evolution of the concept of health – from negative, reductionist models based on the absence of pathology, through positive approaches that define health as dynamic well-being and adaptive capacity (e.g., Antonovsky’s salutogenesis), to contemporary biopsychosocial and enactive frameworks. Particular attention is given to philosophical interpretations of health in the works of Aristotle, Spinoza and Deleuze, which present health as a process of harmonising relations between body, mind, and environment. Against this background, the principles of osteopathy are discussed as a discipline focused on supporting the body’s self-regulatory mechanisms and restoring internal balance. The paper argues that integrating positive definitions of health into osteopathic practice enables a shift from a strictly disease-centred paradigm towards an approach focused on human potential, agency, and quality of life.
