Summary/Abstract: This volume, composed of five chapters, focuses on the status of Spanish as a foreign language at all educational stages—from preschool to higher education—within the systems of Central European countries (Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic) between 2004 and 2024. The chosen time frame reflects the fact that it was precisely during these two decades of the second millennium that Spanish began to appear in Central European education with increasing consistency, soon becoming one of the most popular foreign languages among students. Therefore, the five chapters compiled in this book analyse the quantitative and qualitative factors that explain the institutionalization of Spanish as a foreign language in Central European classrooms.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter analyzes the demolinguistic and educational dynamics of Spanish across the Visegrad Group countries (Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic), a peripheral region in the European Spanish-speaking landscape, where learning Spanish as a foreign language is the primary force behind its development. In this context, it is estimated that there is a potential group of Spanish users of around 636,000 speakers, representing approximately 1% of the population in each country. Among them, eight out of ten have acquired Spanish in educational contexts. The results show a growing interest and increase in the learning of Spanish, although this development is taking place within the framework of low institutionalization and limited presence in non-formal education settings.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter analyses the development of Spanish as a foreign language in the Slovak education system between 2004 and 2024. Its situation in pre-school, primary, secondary, tertiary and non-formal education is discussed. Although at the beginning of the period the presence of Spanish was marginal and did not compete with other languages such as German, Russian or French, its situation has now improved considerably. In 2023/24, Spanish is in fourth place at most educational levels and is the third most demanded language in non-formal education.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter presents the evolution of Spanish as a foreign language in the Hungarian educational system between the academic years 2004/05 and 2023/24. Analyzing the data available in official statistics, we examine the importance and volume of Spanish at the different levels of formal education. Beyond the national data, we analyze the geographical diffusion of Spanish within Hungary, taking into account the administrative division of the country as well. Considering its dynamics, we try to outline how Spanish has positioned itself among the most widely taught foreign languages in that country.

It is precisely during these two decades of the second millennium that Spanish begins to appear in the Polish educational landscape with increasing consistency, and it soon becomes the third most selected foreign language by students. Therefore, it is worth analyzing in detail the circumstances that explain the success of ELE in Polish classrooms.
