“El perdón sobraría donde el yerro falta”: The apology strategies in La Celestina

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the apology strategies in Pre-Renaissance Spanish. The analysis will be based on linguistic material from La Celestina, attributed to Fernando de Rojas. Traditional rules of decorum are not respected there as there is no correlation between the characters’ way of being and their social status. Hence, it is the communicative situation that determines the sociolectal variation of the protagonists. It can therefore be assumed that the same principle will apply to the performance of this expressive speech of act. Given these premises, the paper will attempt to demonstrate which strategies predominate and in which communicative situations they are present.
