- Summary/Abstract:The impact of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic varies across economies, industries and firms. One of the most visible effects of the pandemic which is widely reported and gains attention of scholars is supply chain disruptions. The pandemic impacted supply chains strongly, deeply and at an unprecedented scale as for now. In February 2024 “Fortune” reported that as many as 94% of the Fortune 1000 companies saw coronavirus supply chain disruptions. As the world is struggling through the second phase of the pandemic now, it is worth while investigating whether supply chains have passed the resilience test successfully during the outbreak of the pandemic. In the chapter the considerations are placed against the background of theoretical concepts of supply chain resilience and are supported by examples of supply chain disruptions and collapses we could observe. In addition, the purpose of the chapter is to assess the way, the pace and the direction of supply chain recoveries. The latter is likely to reveal several new business models, development strategies as well as potentially new research avenues all of which may have much to contribute businesses for gearing up for the post-pandemic world. All of this will show what we have learned so far and what needs to be done soon, and will help to answer the title question whether the resilience of contemporary supply chains has recently been properly tested and approved.

- Summary/Abstract:This article addresses a very important topic of patient experience design. The patient purchases and receives a service in a specific form and with specific features, supplemented by additional services and goods. At the same time he or she gains real experience related not only to the service it self, but also to the way it is offered, delivered and consumed. This experience is influenced by the seller—service provider—hence we can talk about designing this kind of experience. In this article, we consider dental services. This allows to shed new light on the issue of experience design, because it is not only the way the service (medical procedure) is performed, but also the physical evidence (clinic infrastructure, interior appearance, staff clothing, additional attributes), and above all, the patient’s comfort, safety and the guarantee of proper medical performance. The latter translates into the lack of complications, patients health and the evaluation of service quality from patients’ viewpoint. Experience design in the dental healthcare is multifaceted and is an important element of clinic management in times of disruption. The credibility of the considerations will be supported by the experience of the author, co-managing a dental clinic that, during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, continuously provided services ensuring patient safety, which was unique in the industry. The purpose of this article is to show how redesigning the patient experience—triggered by the pandemic—influenced the management of a dental clinic and the healthcare services continuity.

- Keywords:supply chain disruptions;truck drivers shortage;transportation management;
- Summary/Abstract:The persistent shortage of skilled truck drivers significantly disrupts the seamless flow of goods within supply chains. Recently, the global economy has undergone substantial shifts due to the growth of international trade, increasing demand for rapid delivery, and heightened focus on environmental sustainability. These shifts have introduced complex challenges, especially in the transportation sector, which is crucial for supply chain efficiency and timeliness. Despite the rising demand for road freight services, the supply of drivers has not kept pace, creating structural imbalances and inefficiencies. Over the past decade, this shortage has led to higher transportation costs, delivery delays, and a decline in supply chain efficiency. Demographic trends, such as an aging workforce and reduced interest in the profession among younger individuals, exacerbate the issue. The research identifies several factors contributing to the driver shortage: low job attractiveness, inadequate wages, poor working conditions, changing job requirements, and increasing regulatory burdens. The document includes also data from surveys conducted in 2022 and 2023, comparing the results to highlight trends and changes over time. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach, including improving working conditions, enhancing the profession’s image, developing effective recruitment strategies, and ensuring fair compensation. Structural adjustments in supply chain management and transportation planning are also necessary to mitigate the impact of driver shortages and maintain global supply chain stability and efficiency.

- Summary/Abstract:One of the adverse events in the process of providing medical services is the untimely delivery of care and the lack of continuity of care. This phenomenon may relate to difficulties inaccessing doctors or difficulties related to the purchase of medicines. Most often, they result from specific disruptions in the supply chain of medical services, and one of such factors is the effects of the pandemic related to the suspended supply of active substances (e.g., from India) or the lack of access to primary care physicians. As a result, these disruptions also lead to financial losses, increasing health debt, and the need to remodel the pharmaceutical supply chain in Poland to become independent of foreign suppliers. In addition, adverse reactions require more resources that need to be secured and delivered to the right place. This requires the organisation of additional supply chains, and often at a fast pace, which multiplies costs, as well as affects patient safety, which is strongly endangered. One of the solutions supporting the elimination of selected disruptions in the process of providing medical services from the perspective of the supply chain are solutions in the field of telemedicine and digitisation of processes in healthcare.

- Summary/Abstract:The article addresses the problem of logistics barriers of various natures encountered by flows implemented in logistics systems. They will be discussed in the case of the Crimean Bridge, which, to put it simply, divides instead of uniting. The tense political situation in this region led to the creation of a political and then military logistic barrier. The history of the bridge’s construction and examples of impeding flows in logistics systems will be presented. The entanglement of states’ political and military goals sometimes leads to logistical consequences. In the case of the Crimean Bridge, Russia’s goals were achieved at the expense of Ukraine’s goals. In the case of the described bridge Russia was forced to establish a land connection with Crimea after its annexation. In this context, such action is understandable, but due to the adopted bridge design, maritime navigation for merchant ships entering Ukrainian ports was significantly hampered.

- Summary/Abstract:Contemporary supply chains operating in a dynamic, and full of complex relationships global environment, must constantly seek ways to adapt to the specific requirements of the market. The ability to adapt has long since become an incredibly important attribute of contemporary supply chains. Currently, one of the key features of adaptive supply chains is also their resilience. Planning business processes in an unstable environment is not easy, because in addition to a thorough understanding of the process, it is essential to take into account the broader context in which it is embedded and the conditions that must be met for it to be implemented in the desired way that gives the expected effect. Managing operations and the supply chain in times of turbulence becomes a serious challenge. It is necessary to consider a large number of action options. Simulations, allowing to understand the consequences of possible decisions before they are made, enable the planning of the material flow process in a way that ensures its efficiency maximisation while taking into account the requirements of individual production environments. Within this activity, itis possible to plan actions in such a way as to enable their implementation in the face of unforeseen situations. The aim of the article is to define the role of simulation in shaping resilient supply chains.

- Summary/Abstract:The author focuses on enhancing the resilience of supply chains in the face of increasing globalisation and the complexity of business processes. The study investigates whether the data collected within the supply chain can be effectively utilised to build systems resilient to disruptions and delays using machine learning methods. Special emphasis is placed on understanding stakeholders’ predictions of delivery delays, which is crucial for maintaining operational continuity and competitiveness. The chapter begins with a literature review on the application of machine learning in supply chain risk management, with a focus on predicting delays. The methodology section presents various machine learning techniques, such as decision trees, bagging, AdaBoost, and random forests. An experiment was conducted on an extensive dataset, using exploratory analysis to identify key features and build classifiers. The study focuses on analysing data from DataCo Global, attempting to predict delays and interpret the results for supply chain stakeholders. The experiment’s results indicate that AdaBoost is the most effective algorithm for this task. This article highlights that machine learning offers promising opportunities in supply chain management but requires continuous development and adaptation to meet the dynamic challenges of this field.
