Summary/Abstract: The chapter addresses the contemporary social and economic conditions of Afghanistan’s development, the development of logistics infrastructure over the second half of the 20th century,and trends in the country’s international trade balance over time. The history of Afghanistan illustratesthe modernisation and expansion of the country’s infrastructure over the decades, its destruction during the armed conflict and its reconstruction again. The chapter addresses the interesting issue of the realisation of transportation foreign investment. In the case of Afghanistan, the role of major investors was played by the U.S.S.R. and the U.S., jointly creating road infrastructure. The work draws mainly on the body of Russian-language literature of the 20th century extensively treating the significant changes taking place in Afghanistan in the last century. Also, available statistical data was used.
