Author(s): Abderrafiî Khoudri / Language(s): French Issue: 30 (2)/2022

This article proposes to analyze the protest discourse of MNHTM. In order to understand its functioning, it is confronted with the various contexts which promote it and which determine its functional and representative complexity. This will lead to deduce how the activists of this movement rely on a rhetorical arsenal and factors that are more situational than structural to advance their position. The collection of our corpus is made possible by ethnographic and nethnographic observation of MNHTM protest practices. It is completed by interviews with its representatives and members. This paper draws on the methodological and conceptual apparatus of the sociology of social movements and discourse analysis to show that the protesting statements of this movement aim to convince by means of a tight argument, enriched by their modulation according to the differences in perception of the nursing cause. In this respect, the discourse becomes a tool that is used to integrate institutional channels. The construction of the mobilizing opportunity is motivated by the same objective. However, based on perceived contextual cues, it does not work as expected.

Author(s): Manon PIAZZA / Language(s): French Issue: 30 (2)/2022

This text sheds light on the elaboration and circulation of representations driven by entrepreneurs and major banking players about blockchains. It is based on ethnographic observations of community events organised around blockchains. It was conducted from 2020 to 2021, lasting from 2 hours to 7 days. This has been completed by online contents. The article focuses on the major representations produced and disseminated within financial spaces. It looks at the emergence of a founding myth of the Bitcoin blockchain and its reappropriation as a myth announcing a renewal of finance. By studying its circulations, it shows that certain blockchains are considered as a technical solution to 2008 crisis. These projections then give them a central place, making them a tool that would allow better anticipation of risks. Projects based on these ideas were then developed. They are promoted within collective spaces conducive to the mobilisation of public and private investment, and via new media such as Twitter, podcasts and online media.

Author(s): Stéphane Amato / Language(s): French Issue: 30 (2)/2022

Through an interdisciplinary approach linking ritual studies, microsociology, anthropology and the binding communication paradigm in particular, this article broaches upon Catholic marriage as a subject of studies. This is a first attempt at considering the strength of the link established in the Catholic marriage, by focusing more notably on interaction and communication contexts. It is suggested that in the future, connections could be drawn between rites and commitment, according to the meaning of the very same theory.

Author(s): Plamen Bochkov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 21/2022

The cute and the fluffy:

The cute and the fluffy:

Author(s): Liisi Laineste,Anastasiya Fiadotava,Eva Šipöczová,Guillem Castañar Rubio / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

When serious official political statements are not enough to get people’s votes, politicians often turn to attention-grabbing and emotion-triggering self-presentation. They give the public access to their “normal, everyday” lives through personalisation and use other tools of “new” politics to create a favourable image of themselves. They can also show the unexpected, backstage aspects of their lives, such as their interactions with their pets. The paper analyses four case studies from different countries (Belarus, Estonia, Slovakia and Spain) in which politicians’ references to their pets became a prominent topic in internet communication and provoked numerous humorous reactions in the form of memes. By looking at various degrees of politicians’ personalisation strategies, we show that “new” and “old” politics should be regarded as the poles of a continuum rather than a binary opposition. We also discuss the content, form and stance of the humorous internet memes posted in reaction to the appearance of politicians’ pets in the news. Our research indicates that such memes function to provoke a discussion and, as a result, form a polyvocal commentary on events; the politicians, however, must take risks accompanying unconventional, revealing political communication and hope that “there's no such thing as bad publicity”.

Examining the rhetorical strategies employed in the humorous discourse of Chinese talk shows

Examining the rhetorical strategies employed in the humorous discourse of Chinese talk shows

Author(s): Zhou Tianli,Nor Shahila Mansor,Lay Hoon Ang,Sharon Sharmini,Xuan Tang / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Researchers have pointed out that rhetorical strategies have a significant impact on producing humour in Chinese talk shows, while few of them have investigated the factors that affect the rhetorical choice in humorous discourse in that context. This study aims to identify the rhetorical strategies used in humorous discourse and investigate the factors that impact on the rhetorical strategies chosen by the hosts or comedians to produce humour. Thus, the current study selected 24 monologue samples from a popular programme called Rock & Roast and conducted a discourse analysis on them. Kenneth Burke’s rhetorical theory is adopted to uncover the factors that influence rhetorical choice in the humorous discourse of Chinese talk shows. The findings reveal that the realisation of rhetorical strategies in the humorous discourse of talk shows is rich, including rhetorical devices, foreign language (English), and internet buzzwords, among other things. The main factors influencing the rhetorical strategies chosen in the humorous discourse in Chinese talk shows are the ‘ratio’ of ‘agent and agency,’ which are talk show comedians and the Chinese language. This study contributes to helping the audience gain a better understanding of rhetorical humour in Chinese talk shows and provides a new perspective for humorous discourse analysis.

Audience differentiation and advertising strategy on interactive television

Audience differentiation and advertising strategy on interactive television

Author(s): Aleksandar M. Babić / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 4/2022

Starting from the assumption that Serbia is in arrears with the implementation of the concept of interactive television and the creation of new forms of advertising, the author studies the transformation patterns of media content consumption using a multi-strategy research method of the habits of the young audience. Combining survey and in-depth interview techniques with qualitative content analysis, the author concludes that traditional TV advertising in the digital environment multiplies in terms of content, which is especially noticeable in the sphere of marketing communications. Young people increasingly apply different media technologies, switching from one device to another or using them simultaneously. Based on the analysis of the behaviour of the student population in the consumption of today’s television in Serbia, we have created a model of interactive television as a multifunctional portal in the context of advertising messages.

„Moje ręce”. Doświadczenie niepełnosprawności w autonarracjach Cheryl Mary Wade

Author(s): Ewelina Godlewska-Byliniak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2022

Cheryl Marie Wade was a poet, performer and activist for the rights of people with disabilities. Her poetic work, which had its performative dimension, as Wade presented her works as part of stage performances, in a direct relationship with viewers, intertwined with her activism: Wade often took up the topic of her own disability, confronting audiences with it and overcoming numerous stereotypes about it. In this text, I juxtapose the work of Cheryl Marie Wade and the vision of disability emerging from this work with an extended interview included in the archive of oral history of disability. I treat both these forms as specific auto-narratives that capture the experience of disability in different terms – poetic and autobiographical. I also ask about the role of the voice in these auto-narratives.

Author(s): Yakim Petrov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The article “The Home and the Robot: An Onto-topological Attempt” views the idea of proliferation of hybrids within contemporary domestic spaces due to technological innovations such as Alexa, Siri, home robots, etc. It focuses onMusk’s symptomatic project called “Optimus” which is a home robot developed for helping with boring and tiresome everyday chores around the house and thus a key example for exploring the paradoxes within the ideas of homeliness and atmosphere considered as kernels in creating a private and intimate space, i.e., a home. Drawing on Luce Irigaray’s critique of Heideggerian ontology, Sloterdijk’sonto-topological project, and Latour’s hybrids, the article sees the proliferation of hybrids as a way for tackling these paradoxes and how they influence contemporary subjectivity and one of its key spaces of articulation – the home. The basic problem which the article tries to elucidate is the forgetting of atmosphere in the creation and care for contemporary dwellings. А forgetting expressed precisely by the “becoming smart” of contemporary homes through apps and robots. However, the article’s problem does not come from technological paranoia, but from a need to articulate certain limits of technology and to mark conceptual trajectories that must be accounted for when innovating the spaces of subjectivity.

Author(s): Stefan Goncharov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The paper enters into a polemical dialogue with the American theorist Jodi Dean and her attempts to critically examine the blogosphere through the prism of psychoanalysis. To this end, the text analyses whether user-generatedcontent on the internet can produce meaningful and epistemologically sustainable“social enclaves”, informal communities and institutions, or whether it operatesmore as a series of recursive and increasingly meaningless quasi-messages. Whileattempting to consider blogging as both a constructive practice and a pathology, the text develops the hypothesis that in special cases one can conceptually speakof “epistemic inflation”, a phenomenon that can manifest itself at the personal aswell as the social, economic and/or political level. Furthermore, the paper brieflyintroduces the ideas, history and one of the key concepts of the influential britishtheory-fiction collective, CCRU (Cybernetic Culture Research Unit).

Author(s): Monika Plewko / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 36/2022

Both commercial and social advertising are the object of study of psychologists, sociologists and linguists. However, these types of advertising vary in their objectives: although both use persuasion in pursuit of a positive reception of the utterances, commercial advertisements serve to promote products, whereas social advertisements focus on transmitting specific ideas to society. Hence the following questions arise: How often do persuasive linguistic resources appear in social advertising? Which are the most common? Do the tools vary by language or by theme? The present work contrastively analyzes the Polish and Spanish social campaigns, as well as the linguistic resources of persuasion in campaigns on ecology, gender violence, drug and alcohol use, and health. In our research we want to present what resources constitute the persuasive character of the aforementioned campaigns, as well as the linguistic variation in Polish and Spanish.

Author(s): Olga Morozowa / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 1/2022

The article discusses the role and significance of the press in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in popularizing Ukrainian-language education. The author concludes that in the analyzed period, the press was the legal platform promoting the concept of Ukrainian national identity. Kievskaya starina, Ridniy krai, Gromadska dumka (renamed to Rada in 1906), Ukrainsky vestnik, Ukrainska gizhn, Svitlo and other journals played a significant role in developing the theoretical framework for the establishment of Ukrainian-language schools and the Ukrainian education system. Press articles penned by famous Ukrainian academics advocated the introduction of the Ukrainian language to schools and creating a wide-reaching network of Ukrainian-language institutions. The press and Ukrainian intellectuals united in their efforts to promote Ukrainian-language teaching. This problem was accentuated by the press in the light of anti-Ukrainian sentiments, shortage of qualified teachers and a general scarcity of readers who recognized the significance of the issue. These journals played the most important role in the process of developing the theoretical framework for the establishment of Ukrainian-language schools and the Ukrainian education system.
