Приповијетке Предрага Степановића (љубавне)

In this paper, the author deals with Predrag Stepanović’s short stories, featuring romantic sentiments written in the period of 1965-2005. They discuss autobiographical stories of Nepovrat and Pobijte plave kanarince, taking place in the present day, alongside with an early novel by the same author, Prepolovljeni, since all three texts highlight unfortunate young love. Unlike these three, whose plot is unrelated to the writer’s home country, the following two short stories, Ludačka romansa and Arhetipski krimić, feature past events in Stepanović’s home town of Mohacs (Hungary). This time, however, the writer’s persona is not in the spotlight, it is merely just one of the fictitious narrators, rendering these short stories as not purely autobiographical, although the writer appears as the first-person narrator. Instead, the protagonists in the story of Ludačka romansa are two mentally deranged characters, namely Luda Mara and Kolesar, while the story of Arhetipski krimić is centred around Marika, a famous beauty from ancient times, best known for her ‘wicked’ eyes. In oral tradition, she is thought to be a dragon’s daughter. Using this legend as a starting point in his own story, Stepanović, with great skill, penetrates deeply into the souls and actions of his characters, which results in a series of all-time and irrational archetypal motifs, such as a dragon’s love, witchcraft, and a murder caused by a magic spell. The last of the short stories discussed, with the somewhat mysterious title of Usudne reči, is embedded into the WWII milieu. On the other hand, it is a documentary. It is a known fact that there was the Sarvar concentration camp in old Hungary intended for Serbs (mainly for women, children, and the elderly). At the same time, this is a destiny-revealing story. The plot within a plot depicts a young Serbian woman named Duša and her two sons, who are prisoners in a kamp for 'chetniks' ('Csetniktábor'), and a young married couple from Hungary with a baby girl who hire Duša as househelp. When Duša loses both her sons due to a typhoid epidemic in the camp, she transfers all her love to the baby girl, she sings and talks to her in Serbian with such warmth that her words determine the girl's destiny. The main plot features a mother of a grown-up young woman that tells this story, with the punchline of the story presenting us with the fact that her daughter married the only Serb she had ever met.

Within this paper we perceived the bright mythical spaces in the poetry of Ljubomir Simović. We conclude that the Simović Saint Sava myth is seen as one of those, bright spaces. We proved this claim by observing the songs from the collection Gornji grad, which in one part treats the myth of Saint Sava. In addition, we dealt with the masterpiece of Simovic’s poetry poem-prayer Deset obraćanja Bogorodici trojeručici hilandarskoj.

Odczytując palimpsest miejski. Na przykładzie Katowic

The article invites the readers to approach the city itself as a text of culture. We are to read it alongside other narratives/narrations (literary, artistic, and cinematic) devoted to it. The author traces how Katowice’s space has been transmuted into politically- and culturally-charged places, by distinguishing consecutive layers of the palimpsest (Polish village, building patterns of German and Polish times: the old and the new). The foregoing examples allow the author to indicate the traces of conceptions and ideologies reflected by architecture. He also includes some methodological recommendations/tips pertaining to reading the space.

Re-Judaizing the Polish (Studies) Landscape: The Doikeyt Model

Taking as its starting point the radical transformation of the Polish cultural and historical landscape that has resulted from Poland’s post-1989 Jewish revival, this article presents a proposal for a substantial reconfiguration of nationally and philologically based university departments and programs in Central and East European Studies—one that reimagines Polish Studies, Russian Studies, and other Slavic Studies programs as inherently multilingual, culturally pluralistic spaces of encounter, and that effects changes to degree requirements and language requirements that reflect this post-national shift in perspective. Making reference to the concept of doikeyt or “hereness,” a cultural and political attitude promoted within the pre–World War II Jewish world, particularly within Bundist and Yiddishist discourse, that saw Jewish culture and languages as native to Eastern Europe—as belonging in Poland and in Russia—the author asks specifically whether Jewish languages (Yiddish and Hebrew) and courses in Yiddish culture, and by extension other “minority” languages and cultures, should have a place within the curriculum and course requirements that contribute today to a degree or a major in Polish Studies, Russian Studies, or other European literature and language programs traditionally structured around the study of one dominant language and culture.

The aim of the article is to conduct a comparative analysis of intertextual filiations between a debut book of Polish writer Stefania Szuchowa, titled Tajemnice motyli [The Secrets of Butterflies] (1920), and James Matthew Barrie’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906) which first appeared in Poland in 1913 as Przygody Piotrusia Pana [Peter Pan’s Adventures] thanks to the translation by Zofia Rogoszówna. As an essential context to this study, the author of the paper presents an almost unknown biography of Szuchowa who debuted as a writer during the interwar period – a prolific and intensive time in Polish publishing for children, including both original and translated books. This analysis of intertextual relations connecting the works by Barrie and Szuchowa is supplemented by a comparative study of striking resemblances between Stefan Norblin’s illustrations to the first edition of Tajemnice motyli and Arthur Rackham’s graphics to Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

The paper discusses the only translations of Ludwig Bemelmans’s Madeline (1939) into Polish, which are presented against the background of the writer’s biography and other works. Translations by Zofia Kierszys (1998) and Małgorzata Pietrzyk (2015) allow the Polish reader to become acquainted with the work of the English‑language author of children’s literature. The author of the paper proves how different strategies chosen by the two translators can affect the reception of the picture book which appeared in Poland almost sixty years after the American premiere. By juxtaposing the original work and the Polish translations, the author also shows the evolution of translation norms and trends on a concrete example.

The aim of the article is to compare the translation strategies used by Jolanta Sztuczyńska and Jarosław Kilian in Polish translations of the same ten volumes of the comic series Asterix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. The most difficult task faced by Sztuczyńska and Kilian was translating the humorous elements of the books, both these addressed to the child reader and those appealing to the adult. The differences between their methods of translation are visible, above all, in the translations of proper names, dialects, texts embedded in the picture, citations, lyrics, and other content that includes cultural and linguistic allusions.

The author of the article attempts to characterise and compare two creations of Gilbert Blythe – the literary and the TV series ones. Apparently, Gilbert’s character in Moira Walley-Beckett’s TV series (2017–Present) has a different function than in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel (1908). Gilbert is a teenager, a pupil at the Avon­lea school, and a boy who competes at school with the titular character of Anne of Green Gables. In the book, we get to know him only through Anne Shirley’s eyes – basing on what she says and thinks about him – and these insights are more opin­ions than facts. In the TV series, however, Gilbert is shown differently, as the crea­tors of Anne with an E devote more screen time to developing this character and to bestowing him with new personality traits. Thanks to this, the relation between Anne and Gilbert becomes deeper and more realistic. The comparative analysis of the character’s creations in both cultural texts is conducted with the use of, inter alia, the tools of gender studies.

For many generations of women, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908) has been a faithful companion in the process of coming of age. Nevertheless, when judged solely by its setting and timeframe (1870s and 1880s), and the moment of its publication (the beginning of the 20th century), the book might appear some¬what anachronic. Several attempts at bringing Anne’s story to life on both the big and small screen have been made, but only one of them – Moira Walley-Beckett’s Anne with an E (2017–Present), produced for Canadian public network CBC and widely distributed by Netflix − can be said to have captured the novel’s spirit by re-embedding it in a truly modern context. The main goal of this paper is to analyse various elements of Walley-Beckett’s take on Montgomery’s opus with regard to their potential usefulness in therapeutic practice with young adults. The reflec¬tions made in the article are accompanied by contextual references to Hanna Lib-erska’s general model of identity development and Małgorzata Kozubek’s theory of cinema therapy.

Is the Film as Empowering as the Book? Studying Empowerment in A Monster Calls

The aim of the paper is to discuss A Monster Calls (2016) by J. A. Bayona, a film adaptation of Patrick Ness’s novel (2011) of the same title, based on an original idea by Siobhan Dowd, from the empowerment theory perspective. The author of the article indicates that there are some significant changes between the book and the motion picture, especially when it comes to the ways of empowering the protagonist and the works’ potential young audience. The results of this comparative study show that the film is more affectively empowering than the novel. This is mainly because in the book, Ness skillfully uses verbal narration (accompanied by Jim Kay’s illustrations), while in the film, Bayona takes advantage of the possibilities offered by the audiovisual medium, therefore providing the audience with artistic and psychological empowerments.

This review article discusses two books by Natalia Paprocka (2018): Bibliografia polskich przekładów i adaptacji francuskiej literatury dla dzieci i młodzieży wydanych w latach 1918–2014 [Bibliography of Polish Translations and Adaptations of French Literature for Children and Youth Published in the Years 1918–2014] and Sto lat przekładów dla dzieci i młodzieży w Polsce. Francuska literatura dla młodych czytelników, jej polscy wydawcy i ich strategie (1918–2014) [A Hundred Years of Translations for Children and Youth in Poland: French Literature for Young Readers, its Polish Publishers and Their Strategies (1918–2014)], which belong to the field of children’s literature translation studies, bibliology, and sociology of art. The article describes the arrangement of the bibliography of Polish translations of French literature for children and young adults compiled by Natalia Paprocka and it summarises the most important assumptions of her research: she applied the concept of the literary field of Pierre Bourdieu, the notions of import/transfer and culture repertoire as understood by Itamar Even-Zohar, and Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory. According to the researcher, throughout the entire century, Polish publishers chose the strategies of re-releases of the classics, which significantly reduced the transfer of innovative phenomena of French children’s culture.

The article aims to examine the modifications of the travel and adventure novel genre in Polish children’s and young adult literature from the 19th to the 21st century. At the centre of consideration are the 21st-century realisations, and their analysis was made on the example of a series about Nela the Young Reporter (2014–Present), published under the license of the National Geographic Society. In the paper, the author uses the tools of postcolonial studies and elements of sociological research on the phenomenon of mass tourism in the context of both adults and children. Several aspects of the analysed series are criticised and framed within the scope of popular culture in its mass variant.

Włoska literatura dla dzieci i młodzieży w Polsce w latach 1945–1989 [Pinocchio’s Heart: Italian Literature for Children and Young Adults in Poland, 1945–1989] by Katarzyna Biernacka-Licznar (2018) – systematises and organises the phenomena concerning the reception of Italian literature for children and youth against the background of dynamic political changes in Poland during the titular period. The second dissertation – Włoska literatura dla dzieci i młodzieży w zbliżeniach polskich [Italian Literature for Children and Young Adults in Polish Close-ups] by Zofia Ożóg-Winiarska (2017) – is a critical monograph on contemporary Italian literature for young readers which emphasises the aesthetic values of those writings and their complex, multidimensional nature.

Beware the White Rabbit: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and A. G. Howard’s Splintered as Gothic Cautionary Tales for Young Girls

The aim of this article is to speculate on the meaning that Lewis Carroll’s (1865, 1871) Alice’s journey through dark Wonderland has acquired in two examples of contemporary YA fiction, Tim Burton’s 2010 film adaptation and A. G. Howard’s 2013 Splintered novel, both depicting Wonderlands that are more dangerous and threatening than what Carroll himself envisioned in his novels. The study shows how Alice’s gender and the fact that she is now portrayed as an adolescent affect her narrative. Among other reasons, the author of the paper argues that the fact that Carroll’s books feature a girl protagonist who wanders alone in a strange land, together with a long-standing tradition of warning girls against doing precisely this, has resulted in the proliferation of YA narratives that turn Carroll’s ‘golden afternoon’ into a Gothic nightmare.

In 1976, John Dominis Holt published what would be considered the first novel by a Kanaka Maoli [Native Hawaiian] author in English, Waimea Summer. This coming-of-age narrative set in 1930’s Hawai‘i follows fourteen-year-old Mark Hull, a half White, half Kanaka Maoli boy who experiences a series of hauntings on his uncle’s farm, all the while grappling with a burgeoning queer identity and conflicted cultural loyalties. In the post American-occupied Hawai‘i, the teachings of Christian missionaries and anti-sodomy laws have all but eradicated the aikāne [homosexual] relationships practiced by the ali‘i [royals] of Marks’ genealogy, and yet the boy’s queer desires refuse to die. In this paper, the novel is interpreted through Laura Westengard’s theory of the queer Gothic, in which concepts of the American nuclear heterosexual family are challenged by the burgeoning past, thus returning the narrative and agency to the queer Indigenous subject.

Groza doświadczania. Sytuacja graniczna jako obrzęd przejścia w inicjacji dojrzałościowej na przykładzie sztuki dla młodzieży Pacamambo Wajdiego Mouawada

The article is a study of Pacamambo (2000), a play by Canadian writer Wajdi Mouawad, which combines the features of an initiation drama with horror elements and shows the nightmare of growing up through unexpected encounters with death. The author shows an analogy between the structure of the rite of passage, proposed by Arnold van Gennep and deepened by Victor Turner, and the aspects related to experiencing oneself in a limit situation in terms of Karl Jaspers and to the poetics of horror. On this basis, she proposes to isolate the tragic model of adolescence (next to the classic – idyllic and romantic – suffering) in which the role of traditional rites is replaced by a limit experience. She indicates that this is a model that we can often come across in contemporary young adult dramas and even in plays for children. She also distinguishes the concept of initiation drama, which still remains outside the area of interest of literary scholars.

The review article discusses the book by Joanna Dybiec-Gajer, Złota różdżka – od książki dla dzieci po dreszczowiec raczej dla dorosłych [A Golden Wand – from a Children’s Book to a Thriller Rather for Adults] (2017). The text presents the structure, methodology, and the most important theses of the monograph on the already classic work by Heinrich Hoffmann (1845), as well as indicates the scholar’s original and valuable findings proving the sense of rediscovering texts belonging to the cultural canon. The article points out also to the productivity of creating a microhistory of a literary work, taking into consideration numerous contexts of its functioning, and refers to Dybiec-Gajer’s reflections on the ways of writing the text (including the structure, genre convention, adaptive mechanisms) and how to read it (including interpretation, reception), which is particularly interesting in the context of relations between the German Struwwelpeter and the Russian Stëpka‑Rastrëpka (1849), or the Polish Złota różdżka [A Golden Wand] (ca. 1858).

Fairy Tale Futures: Critical Reflections

Praet, S., & Kérchy, A. (Eds.). (2019). The fairy tale vanguard: Literary self-consciousness in a marvelous genre. Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars. This article provides critical reflections on Stijn Praet and Anna Kérchy’s edited collection, The Fairy Tale Vanguard: Literary Self-Consciousness in a Marvelous Genre (2019). Vanguard can be defined as “the foremost part of an advancing army or naval force,” with established and emerging critics marching in defence of the fairy tale against the genre’s complicated reception throughout the ages. The form’s self-consciousness and intertextual complexity is foregrounded, with fairy tale experiments ranging from those of 17th-century French female conteuses, to modernist short stories and contemporary films, which all combine into a celebration of the genre’s sophistication and continued relevance. The book engages with the generic complexity of the fairy tale, defying any kind of neat categorisation. ‘Fairy tale’ often functions as a ‘catch-all’ term for different fairy tale narratives, but this study paves the way for reflections on new subgenres such as the ‘anti-tale’. Finally, it is suggested that Rikki Ducornet’s idea of the ‘deep magic’ of fairy tales opens us up to a possibility, to an embrace of the unknown and all of its potentiality, providing us with an imaginative space within which to envision a new and better reality. This is foregrounded as a central tenant to The Fairy Tale Vanguard’s privileging of experimentation, which highlights that the fairy tale harnesses a deeply political potential in challenging current oppressions. Perhaps it is not us, fairy tale scholars, who are marching to the aid of the fairy tale then, rather it is the tales fighting for us in an unjust world.
