Идеите на Пражкия функционален структурализъм в трудовете на проф. А. В. Бондарко и проф. И. Куцаров

Author(s): Stiliyan Stoychev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2017

One of the leading methodological linguistic trends of the past 20th century is undisputedly linguistic structuralism. The Prague school, also known as the Prague linguistic circle, is one of the first structuralist linguistic schools, being properly defined as functionalist in its essence. Representatives of the Prague school from its classic period (1926 – 1945) and their disciples in the late 20th century give their invaluable contribution to worldwide development of linguistics. The text examines those key concepts of Prague functional structuralism that substantially contributed to the formation and development of functional grammar as we know it in the works of A. V. Bondarko and I. Kutsarov. First, it is R. Jakobson’s concept of binarism, also known as the theory of markedness, that plays a key role in the development of modern linguistics, underlying the morphological concepts of A. V. Bondarko and I. Kutsarov that represent the relations between grammemes of morphological categories through morphological oppositions. Second, the Prague structuralists developed the functional approach to linguistic phenomena and the theory of centre and periphery in language. Both are uniquely elaborated in Bondarko’s functional theory of semantic fields underlying his theory of functional grammar. The latter was not only promoted but also successfully implemented by I. Kutsarov in Bulgaria. And last but not least, much like the Prague linguistic circle, A. V. Bondarko, I. Kutsarov and their disciples evaluate the theoretical significance of synchronic and contrastive studies. Functional grammar, which is to meet many more scientific challenges in the future, undisputedly applies to the study of a particular language as well as to contrastive studies.

Eзиковата култура на българина днес

Author(s): Mihail Videnov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

In recent decades, the resentment of the language, spoken by the Bulgarian politicians, is growing. The article suggests that the reason for this lays in the poor speech culture of the politicians. The official speeches are overrun with Turkish words, slang and forbidden words. In order to demonstrate their pseudo language proficiency, the speakers use English words and cite Latin sentences without any mastery, and this makes their speech even more inappropriate. The author defends the school language education by saying that adolescents spend with their teachers much less time than watching TV. However, the author reproaches those mother tongue teachers who turn the Bulgarian language classes into classes for teaching literature. The article criticises the publicly speaking people who perceive democracy as time when any violation of the regular language usage is allowed.

Author(s): Meri Lakova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

The aim of the article is to bring to mind the model of the communication of R. Jackobson and to examine if the basic linguistic units fit to this model. We consider that the basic linguistic units are the words, the sentences and the texts. After F. de Saussure we accept that the signs have two aspects: significant (name) and signifié (meaning). It is proved that the two aspects of the sign exists in the three types of linguistic units. It is proved also that the signifié contains not only a semantic information, but also it contains a structural information.

Проблеми и особености на чуждоезиковото обучение по арменски език

Author(s): Peter Goliyski / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

The text discusses the two main trends for the ethno genesis of the Armenian people – the theory of indigenous origin, or at least the very ancient presence of the Armenians on the territory of the Armenian Plateau and the theory of their migration. The second theory – supported by information from various written sources - considers the Armenians as emigrants from the Balkans. The article also examines a number of lexical influences on the Armenian language – from the layer of its own Armenian root words, whose foundations can be recovered or traced back to the Indo-European language spoken thousands of years ago by the ancestors of all Indo-European peoples, to present days.

Знаки российской культурной идентичности в слоганах коммерческой рекламы

Author(s): Tatiana Romanova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2018

The article deals with the texts of Russian commercial advertising slogans that express association with the concept of “RUSSIA” by including ethno-specific components of verbal nature. In texts of the slogans, signs of Russian identity that mark the cultural space of Russia are revealed, representing the advertising stimulus for the recipient. Such verbal ways of expressing Russian national and cultural identity as ethno-specific trademarks are analyzed, as well as ethnonyms and ethnotoponyms, descriptive nominations and paraphrases, toponyms, precedent statements and words denoting national and cultural values and stereotypes, rhyme in slogans, and other techniques of ethno-specific advertising. The semiotic analysis that has been carried out in the article is relevant for studying characteristics of the language of modern Russian advertising. The study of slogans, including Russian ethno-specific components, allows us to draw conclusions about the set of auto-stereotyped ideas of Russians about their country.

Перформативи и метаконстативи

Author(s): Atanas Anov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

Studying speech acts is an interesting method in the study of language. This article adopts J. L. Austin’s understanding of speech acts and it aims to present his ideas for performatives and to introduce new notion “meta-constatives”. To accomplish this goal first we will briefly introduce analytic philosophy’s context, with which we can explicate philosophy of ordinary language, speech acts and in particular performatives. In the second part of the article meta-constatives will be presented. The later are utterances, with which we can show how things in the world must be. In the second part of the article we will also turn our attention towards imperative sentences, through which we build meta-constatives. Also, a relation between performatives and meta-constatives will be created. Finally, the article points out differences between meta-constatives and imperatives.

F2 Transition Measurement in Bulgarian Adults who Stutter and who do not Stutter

Author(s): Gergana Padarva-Ilieva,Dobrinka Geogrieva / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

There is strong research evidence that F2 transitions may be used to differentiate the speech of persons who stutter from that of persons who do not stutter. However, what is known about F2 transitions in stuttering is based mostly on speakers of English. In this paper we present the first experiment on F2 transition in native Bulgarian speakers. Subjects included four Bulgarian adult males who stutter (mean age = 24 years) and four age-matched Bulgarian adult males who do not stutter. The software product Motor Speech Profile (MSP) as a part of the computerized speech laboratory (Kay Pentax) was used for the measurement of F2 transition. There was a notable difference in the magnitude of F2 variations, the rate of F2 variations and the regularity of F2 variations between participants who stutter and who do not stutter.

Ролята и значението на италианските научни издания при формирането на фонда на Университетската библиотека „Св. Климент Охридски“

Author(s): Anna Angelova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2018

The article presents an analysis of the Italian scientific literature acquired in the library collection from its founding in 1888 to 1903, fulfilling one of the main tasks – “to collect and store foreign literature as the most important part of the library’s collections”. Italian scientific editions are one of the five main components of the collection of Italian rare and valuable books in the University Library. The emergence of Italian editions in the first years after the founding of the library is due primarily to the role of Italy in Europe’s cultural history, secondly to the changed geopolitical circumstances that took place after the Liberation. The purchase of Italian scientific and scholarly literature, which fills a gap in the period of the fundamental development of library collections (especially in the field of humanities), is essential for the progress of the University Library and is among the priorities of the newly established Bulgarian University. The largest volume group in the collection of Italian rare and valuable editions is the group of scientific publications. It contains 283 titles in several fields – law, history, philology, philosophy, pedagogy, and philological sciences. Detailed analysis of the Italian scientific literature in the library collections shows that most of the scientific editions in various research fields retain significant.

PRAGMATICS IN FOOD ADVERTISING

PRAGMATICS IN FOOD ADVERTISING

Author(s): Andreea DINU / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Pragmatics has a very important role in understanding how advertising texts communicate and persuade beyond explicit messages. This paper investigates the frequently used strategies in food advertisements to influence the consumer's behavior and fasten decision-making processes. Through a qualitative approach, the current paper analyzes a diverse corpus of digital media food advertising texts. Implicature, presupposition, deixis, speech acts, and relevance are identified and analyzed by highlighting how these strategies create emotional responses, reinforce cultural values, and establish common assumptions between advertisers and consumers. This research proves that implicature is generally used in suggesting benefits and qualities that are not directly stated; presuppositions deepen the assumption about the health advantages or the quality offered by a product without claiming it. Deictic expressions and speech acts create personal relevance and psychological closeness through commands and invitations. Relevance theory shows how advertisers optimize the communicative impact. The study contributes to pragmatics, advertising, and consumer behavior by explaining how pragmatic strategies operate as powerful tools.

Mihail Sadoveanu – corespondența trimisă lui Sextil Pușcariu

Mihail Sadoveanu – corespondența trimisă lui Sextil Pușcariu

Author(s): / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2024

Mihail Sadoveanu (1880–1961) and Sextil Pușcariu (1877–1948) are two major figures in the Romanian culture and society of the 20th century. Not only where they both prolific authors, with fundamental contributions to Romanian culture, but they also held, for decades, multiple key-positions in Romania’s cultural (and sometimes political) institutions. The correspondence published here, 9 documents (letters or postcards, dating from 1904–1933), written by Sadoveanu and addressed to Sextil Pușcariu, provides a valuable perspective on the Romanian society of the early 20th century in terms of editorial practices (for both periodical publications as well as book publishers), education in rural communities, or Romanian culture in general. The documents are part of the Sextil Pușcariu correspondence archive, available at the “Sextil Pușcariu” Institute of Linguistics and Literary History, Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca branch. Apart from their philological or literary value, the documents may be of great interest to historians or sociologists interested in early-modern Romania, as Sadoveanu’s comments are often focused on important figures or events from that time – for example, in one of his letters, Sadoveanu extensively discusses about Nicolae Iorga (one of the most important Romanian historians from that time), more specifically about his departure from the famous Sămănătorul magazine and about his editorial practices as director of the magazine.
