THE REPEATED LATIN DISCOURSE IN ROMANIAN CULTURE AND THE WORKS OF CONSTANTIN CIOPRAGA: FUNCTIONS, CHARACTERISTICS, AND RELEVANCE

THE REPEATED LATIN DISCOURSE IN ROMANIAN CULTURE AND THE WORKS OF CONSTANTIN CIOPRAGA: FUNCTIONS, CHARACTERISTICS, AND RELEVANCE

Author(s): Bogdan-Adrian Judeţ / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

This paper explores the concept of "repeated Latin discourse," a phenomenon essential to the evolution of language, particularly in Romanian, where Latin has significantly influenced its structure and stylistics. The first chapter defines repeated discourse as the recurrence of linguistic structures (expressions, phrases, or fixed formulas) in different contexts, maintaining a stable semantic core while allowing reinterpretations and adaptations. It emphasizes the importance of repeated Latin discourse in Romanian, both at the lexical and syntactical level. The chapter discusses the key characteristics of this discourse, including its persistence, formal stability, semantic adaptability, and stylistic and argumentative functions. The usage of Latin expressions spans various domains such as law, academia, and literature, contributing to the cultural and linguistic heritage of Romania. Cristinel Munteanu’s contributions are highlighted, particularly his analysis of Latin phrases’ adaptation and their impact on Romanian syntax and style. The second chapter focuses on the role of repeated Latin discourse in Constantin Ciopraga’s work, illustrating how he uses Latin expressions to establish authority, enhance memorability, and foster intertextual connections. His use of Latin phrases reflects a deep-rooted intellectual tradition and strengthens his arguments by providing clarity and legitimacy. Expressions like "Auctoritatis argumentum" and "Non scholae, sed vitae discimus" serve to underscore the educational and cultural importance of literature. The repeated use of Latin phrases also aids in connecting different literary works across time, demonstrating the enduring relevance of classical thought. Cristinel Munteanu's studies on repeated discourse are referenced, highlighting its importance in forming logical structures and maintaining an academic and scholarly style.

The work highlights the topicality of the writers' works. The work explains the myth of the giants and how they came to be, according to the Bible. The study shows a hypothesis that shows why the earth has 365 days in a year and not 360, appealing to ,,Gulliver's Travels" and the Bible (Book of Joshua). The moralizing teachings in writer Anton Pann's novel are highlighted. The symmetry between Urmuz's Fuchsiade and François Rabelais's novel Gargantua & Pantagruel is highlighted. The paper analyzes Fuchsiada written by Urmuz and emphasizes the causes of dehumanization. FROM POETIC FORMS OF ROMANTIC RHETORIC TO SYMBOLIST INNOVATIONS

FROM POETIC FORMS OF ROMANTIC RHETORIC TO SYMBOLIST INNOVATIONS

Author(s): Laurențiu-Florin Băcan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

The romantic current that dominated in the first half of the 19th century was characterized by the appreciation of nature, subjectivity and individual passion. At the same time, the symbol during this period was often linked to nature and strong emotions, being used to express the depth of human experience. One of the most well-known ways through which this phenomenon is possible is the dream, relatively accessible to everyone. It will have the ability to change social conditions, to penetrate horizons inaccessible to reality and even to change the natural order of things. As far as romantic symbols are concerned, however, it can be easily discerned that they vary by culture, historical period, and individuality, yet there are a few elements that have often become associated with romance in general. Used later by the Symbolist movement too, they discovered their dual uses, both aiming often the expression of emotions and subtle meanings. So, symbols like the North Star, heart, roses, birds, moon, bridge, colors, waves and sea, geometric symbols like rings, circle or spirals, dream and subconscious, as well as books of poetry or writings were no longer just means of personal expression or direct representations of nature, but had become means by which to convey abstract ideas and subtle feelings.

THE AESTHETICS OF SURPRISE IN THE NOVEL SUITE FRANÇAISE BY IRÈNE NÉMIROVSKY

THE AESTHETICS OF SURPRISE IN THE NOVEL SUITE FRANÇAISE BY IRÈNE NÉMIROVSKY

Author(s): Adela Sava (Codreș) / Language(s): French Issue: 40/2025

Encryption manifests itself in narration through “pitfalls” which slow down or stop the narrative. As the fictional author is the source of the story, the encrypted work gives him the possibility of coexisting with trauma. We are going to mention some historical details which, in our opinion, can explain such a novel, mixture between the autobiographical and the historical. The details of places and events provide identifiable chronological markers in an expressly dated time and draw the time of fiction into the space of the gravitation of historical time.

THE APPLAUSE DRAWER - A MIRROR OF A WORLD ON THE BACK

THE APPLAUSE DRAWER - A MIRROR OF A WORLD ON THE BACK

Author(s): Maria-Andreea Rașoveanu (Pădurean) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Written in the last years of communism, without hope of being published, the novel The Applause drawer by Ana Blandiana reveals in a polyphonic writing an existential universe in which control and terror dominate. The aim of the article is to emphasize both the unique epic construction, as in a palimpsest, and the symbolic implications of the text. The epic discourse constructed from different authorial perspectives offers both notes of grotesque reportage that provide the image of real, lived communism, and notes of denunciation specific to that period.

THE DIARY OF A JOURNALIST WITHOUT A DIARY BETWEEN CONFESSION AND FICTION

Author(s): Maria-Andreea Rașoveanu (Pădurean) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

This article aims to highlight the issue of placing the text Journal of a Journalist Without a Journal in the category of fictional or nonfictional text. Without giving verdicts, it illustrates features of both species recognizable in Sîrbu's work and reveals the complexity of the documentary material that transgresses the options of classification through its intrinsic value. The writer proved to be a master of presenting the last decade of Romanian communism through highly suggestive episodes that belong to themes that converge towards the idea of individual pain and general suffering.

THE THREAD OF ‘BEING’: ON MOTION AND WONDER IN “CHILDE HAROLD’S PILGRIMAGE”

THE THREAD OF ‘BEING’: ON MOTION AND WONDER IN “CHILDE HAROLD’S PILGRIMAGE”

Author(s): Andra Irina Porumbeanu / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The present paper is meant to draw the reader’s attention to Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage in order to highlight the mastery demonstrated by Lord Byron in capturing presence, fluidity and the sublime. This is achieved, among other well documented characteristics of the poem, by means of existential (there-BE) and presentative (there-V) sentences, whose structural properties and frequency renders them syntactically central. It is proposed that, precisely due to their centrality, these constructions not only weave an invisible thread linking the four cantos of the poem but also lend balance and beauty which may not have been conveyed had other devices been employed.

OTHER. ON UNDERSTANDING OF THE RECIPROCAL-DIRECTED EXPECTATIONS WITHIN THE NUMINOUS DYNAMICS

Author(s): Alexandru-Ioan Cânda / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Pursuing the numinous through the effort to make it present and manifest, but also to establish a communication, the mystic finds himself in search of some meaning about this numinous-Other that is to be. This search is not only a travail of crossing, but an encounter with the other in the construction of his own enunciation that tends to develop a language of encounter with this Other – yet still through the construction with which he also participates in communication. Sharing a common meaning, both the mystic and the numinous enunciation become openings of addressing and relationship that will thus impose a new common reality of revealing mutual meanings.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE PROCESSING - A COGNITIVE AND LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE PROCESSING - A COGNITIVE AND LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE

Author(s): Alexandru Cornel Selyem / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Fictive motion, a subtype of figurative language, describes static objects in a way that implies movement. Phrases like “The highway cuts through the valley” create an impression of motion without any physical displacement. This linguistic phenomenon is linked to cognitive and neural mechanisms, including embodied cognition, mental simulation, and neural activation in brain areas such as the left inferior frontal gyrus and posterior superior temporal sulcus. Research indicates that fictive motion engages both linguistic and perceptual-motor systems. Studies utilizing eye-tracking and the visual-world paradigm provide empirical insights into how fictive motion is processed. Participants exhibit longer fixation times and increased saccadic movements when interpreting fictive motion sentences, suggesting mental simulation of movement. These findings support the embodied cognition theory, which argues that language comprehension is grounded in sensory and motor experiences.

THE LINGUISTIC WORLD PICTURE AS A REFLECTION OF THE NATIONAL ETHOS

THE LINGUISTIC WORLD PICTURE AS A REFLECTION OF THE NATIONAL ETHOS

Author(s): Corina Iordan / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The concept of the linguistic world picture underscores the significant differences in how communities perceive the world through their languages. E. Coșeriu defines the linguistic world picture as a precise and systematic organization of the content of a language. He emphasizes the dual nature of language as both a tool for constructing and representing reality. The language not only serves as a means of expressing linguistic identity but also provides access to understanding the essence of the reality itself. The linguistic world picture is a critical concept in linguistic and anthropological research, offering insights into how the language reflects and shapes cultural perceptions, values and worldviews. It captures the interplay between vocabulary, grammatical structures and other linguistic features in conveying the cultural and social identity of a community. This dynamic interaction reveals how language mediates and molds human experience. By analyzing the linguistic world picture of a specific language, researchers uncover subtle cultural nuances embedded in linguistic expressions. This approach highlights the interconnectedness of language and culture, showcasing how the linguistic features both reflect and influence cultural practices and values. The concept serves as a vital analytical framework for understanding the role of language in constructing, transmitting and preserving cultural identities.

THE LANGUAGE OF BOTANY

THE LANGUAGE OF BOTANY

Author(s): Daniela Suciu (Fodor) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

The distinction between general vocabulary and specialized vocabulary is frequently addressed in contemporary terminology. The purpose of this study is to review the main features of the language of botany, which is characterized by a varied lexicon. We have attempted to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of botanical terminology, especially considering that the designation of concepts is achieved not only through hermetic terms, but also by means of words from the general vocabulary. The conclusion drawn is that the language of botany distinguishes itself, compared to other scientific fields, by the phenomenon of duplicating—even triplicating—the scientific term with botanical lexical elements.

THE VERB SAY IN THE INCIDENT SENTENCES: CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS FRENCH-ROMANIAN

THE VERB SAY IN THE INCIDENT SENTENCES: CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS FRENCH-ROMANIAN

Author(s): Elena Aurelia Popescu-Motomancea / Language(s): French Issue: 40/2025

This article questions the behavior of the verb say in the incident sentences of Michel Houellebecq's novel, Map and territory. Through a contrastive analysis based on the method of Lucie Gournay (2013), this article aims to identify the occurrences of the verb say, semantic and pragmatic equivalents, as well as non-equivalences in their translation into Romanian. The conclusion is that Romanian keeps as much the structure of the statement in French as the semantic and pragmatic values of this verb, although there are situations where the Romanian translator chooses a verb that highlights the linguistic and narrative specificities of the Romanian language.

THE EXPLANATORY TEXT

THE EXPLANATORY TEXT

Author(s): Adina Cristiana Sucevan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

This study examines the explanatory text as a communicative and didactic tool, focusing on two scientific articles from Descoperă.ro that explore cosmic curiosities. The texts analyzed address complex scientific questions, such as “Why is space cold if the Sun is so hot?” and “What does outer space sound like?”. Through explanatory techniques such as definition, example, reformulation, and comparison, the authors ensure a clear and accessible transmission of scientific information. The study highlights how specialized vocabulary is clarified through simpler terms and how logical organization contributes to knowledge structuring. Furthermore, the analysis emphasizes the role of textual organizers with distinct functions (hierarchization of information, explanation, contrast, and conclusion) in facilitating comprehension. The study also explores how the texts balance an asymmetrical communicative relationship between the author, as a knowledge authority, and the reader, who is progressively introduced to complex scientific concepts. Ultimately, the research demonstrates that explanatory texts do not merely inform but also restructure the reader’s prior knowledge by transforming paradoxes into comprehensible phenomena.

VIȘNIEC’S THEATRICAL SELF-TRANSLATION: FROM LE RETOUR À LA MAISON TO RECVIEM

VIȘNIEC’S THEATRICAL SELF-TRANSLATION: FROM LE RETOUR À LA MAISON TO RECVIEM

Author(s): Emilia Ababei / Language(s): French Issue: 40/2025

Self-translation is a complex process that involves both rewriting and re-creation, placing the author in a dual role as both writer and translator. This study explores the phenomenon of theatrical self-translation, focusing on the case of Matei Vișniec, a Romanian-born playwright who writes in French and later adapts his works into Romanian. The theoretical framework is based on key concepts from translation studies, contextualizing Vișniec’s approach, in which his French and Romanian versions do not constitute mere translations but rather distinct recreations adapted to different cultural and linguistic contexts. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the case of Le retour à la maison / Recviem, highlighting how Vișniec alters his plays when transitioning from one language to another. His self-translation process involves modifications in rhythm, structure, and cultural references, demonstrating that his works are not simple linguistic transpositions but complex acts of rewriting tailored to each audience.

DRAMATIC TEXT AND THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE: RECEPTION AND INTERPRETATION

Author(s): Vera Mariancic-Cobzac / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The theatrical process is characterized by the relationship between the literary text and the stage representation. Receiving and interpreting a work of art is a multifaceted process that includes pre-understanding, analysis, critical and/or creative rethinking. The article deals with the problem of the relationship between the dramaturgical text and its stage performance from the perspective of the theories of the reception and interpretation of the artistic text. We conclude that the theater and interpretation are in a relationship of complementarity and that simultaneously, the interpretation precedes and follows the theatrical performance.

Author(s): Violeta Bercaru Oneață / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The idea of pre-history, a pre-pattern for the huge spiritual content represented by the mythology realm as integration in cosmic rhythms as well as basically attached to terrestrial energies - uncountable millennia as shelter for a countable time in history is the main thread of this study through the lens of philosophers like F.W.Schelling, L.Klages, L.Blaga with an encompassing of past/present time fusion in C.G.Jung's terms. All of these corner miles are presented in connection with a nowadays documentary about mysterious troves bearing peculiar magnetic fields capable to ground portals towards parallel worlds, in a loop framework that contours what we have named the physics of the unconscious formation.

"CLUTTER" AND "INTEGRATION" IN THE DWELLING SPACE. THE METAMORPHOSES OF MEANINGS

"CLUTTER" AND "INTEGRATION" IN THE DWELLING SPACE. THE METAMORPHOSES OF MEANINGS

Author(s): Alin Constantin Naidin / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Our theme relates, from an anthropological and social perspective, to how dwellings, isolated from the consecrated space, are represented. It is based on personal experience, through participatory observation in an island space, Tenerife, Los Abrigos, a place of notoriety for celebrations that bring together participants from all continents. What is remarkable is the preservation of the idea that the cave-space, the rock dwelling has remained an inhabited space. According to the definition of Clark Wissler, who considered second worldwide in the field of anthropology, after E. B. Taylor, culture can be analyzed from four perspectives: psychological, genetic, descriptive and normative. The analysis of the cultural aspects that we found in the field research in February 2024 on Tenerife can be thus interpreted, focusing on the symbolism and meaning metamorphoses of the cave-dwelling concept. It is a reinterpretation of two acculturation visions, "clutter" and "integration" in the dwelling space.
