Human Mobility, Covid-19 And Policy Responses: The Rights And Claims-Making Of Migrant Domestic Workers

Author(s): Smriti Rao,Sarah Gammage,Julia Arnold,Elizabeth J. Anderson / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

It is clear that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) attacks our biological and socio-economic vulnerabilities. Sharp variations in mortality rates have forced us to acknowledge pre-existing inequalities of class, race and gender in the ability to ‘be safe, be well’ even as a disproportionate amount of the economic pain and suffering of this crisis is being visited upon the poorest and most vulnerable. One unique feature of the COVID-19 response is the need to curb mobility to reduce disease transmission. These curbs on human mobility (notably not matched by curbs on flows of capital) directly impact the vast flows of human migration that the global economy is built upon today. And while the bulk of public attention and policy intervention in most countries has been focused on domestic effects, international migrant workers have long been ‘essential but disposable’ workers of the kind most affected by the health and economic effects of the pandemic.

Facing A Pandemic Away From Home: Covid-19 And The Brazilian Immigrants In Portugal

Author(s): Patricia Posch,Rosa Cabecinhas / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

On January 7, 2020, the Portuguese newspaper, Público, published an article about an unprecedented challenge facing Chinese leaders: a “strange form of pneumonia” (Chaiça, 2020) diagnosed in several patients in the Chinese city of Wuhan, that was subsequently named COVID-19. On March 2, the Portuguese government had placed major hospitals under alert and reinforced the supply of medicines (Campos & Lins, 2020). This occurred even before the declaration of a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation, on March 12 (WHO, 2020), and diagnosis of the first cases in Portugal. On March 18, a national state of emergency was declared - which imposed social measures, such as social isolation and mobility restrictions in public spaces. The state of emergency continued until May 2, when it was replaced by the state of calamity, and then by the state of contingency on July 1.

Remittances From Mexican Migrants In The United States During Covid-19

Author(s): Rodolfo García Zamora,Selene Gaspar Olvera / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

According to the World Bank, remittances around the world will fall about 20% as a result of the economic crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns. The projected drop, which will be the sharpest fall in recent history, is largely due to the collapse of migrant workers’ wages and employment—workers who are often more vulnerable to the loss of jobs and wages during economic crises in the countries that host them. In light of these predictions, remittances will fall 19.7%, dropping to US$445 billion dollars compared to US$554 billion dollars the previous year. The World Bank predicts that the biggest drops will be in Europe and Central Asia (27.5%), followed by Sub-Saharan Africa (23.1%), South Asia (22.1%), the Middle East and North Africa (19.6%), Latin America and the Caribbean (19.3%) and East Asia and the Pacific (13%). Even when taking this trend into account, the institution considers that remittances will continue to be a very important source of financing for recipient countries compared to direct foreign investment, which it estimates will fall by more than 35% in 2020. This maintains the trend seen in recent years of larger amounts of remittances than direct foreign investment (World Bank, 2020).

Ethiopian-Israeli Women In Academia: A Gender Equality Plan Within The Framework Of Change Project

Ethiopian-Israeli Women In Academia: A Gender Equality Plan Within The Framework Of Change Project

Author(s): Hana Himi / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This study focuses on the coping and experiences of Ethiopian-Israeli women during their studies for advanced degrees, and describes the elements of success and the unique barriers that they face. The literature review presents the intersecting identity approach, which was formed by American scholars and was adapted to the Israeli case. We emphasize the challenges of the gender-race combination, assuming that these two identity factors cannot be disconnected here and that their combination creates unique challenges. Various emotional, cognitive, mental, social, economic and cultural aspects of the Ethiopian immigration to Israel and their significance, separately and combined, are considered as the background of the women’s intersecting identity. The research method was qualitative, and included ten semi-open interviews with women who had PhDs or were in various stages of acquiring advanced degrees. Our findings indicate that barriers that are unique to women who cope with an intersecting identity can be identified and defined. The barriers are varied – from lack of information about the requirements of the Israeli academic system, to coping with emotional and conflictual overload due to their desire to study and their inability to support their family of origin whether financially or emotionally, to an absence of instrumental resources to fund their studies. Coping with their intersecting identity vis-à-vis the academic system was characterized by mental resilience thanks to their personality characteristics, self-confidence, curiosity, and aspiration to develop and succeed together with their considerable ability to adapt to the various demands presented to them and to excel in their achievements. The conclusions of the study focus on the changes that happened in their life: the awareness to promote the representation of Ethiopian-Israeli women in academia, and to create a supportive environment on the personal and academic level. These women can serve as role-models and Mentors for other women in the Ethiopian-Israeli community and for women from other minority groups, and facilitate a pluralistic, multicultural academic system. Additionally, the structural and social barriers should be removed through promoting awareness and policies of equality and fair distribution of public resources.

Град и наследства: градът-разказ, сцена, културен пейзаж

Author(s): Valentina Ganeva-Raycheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The paper presents a field research discourse on the city as a territory. The analysis is based on the thesis that the territory and the heritage are not given a priori, but they are an essential part of the activities of the local communities and state policies for construction, valorization and instrumentalization of resources. The paper presents not only particular objects, considered as a heritage, but the city as a territory that is inherited. The field of the inheritance is enlarging from the undeniable heritage (the historical center with UNESCO sign) to the places and neighborhoods, defined as distinctive for certain type of space, as well as those, valorized as a way of life. Particular consideration is given to the practices and the creation of heritage sites that emphasis on the problem about the city as a stage of cultural activities, human relationships and interaction with the environment (the urban landscape).

Регионални измерения на православната менталност: град Самоков

Author(s): Konstantin Rangochev / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The article examines the dedication of the main thrones (nomination) of several churches in Samokov: the Metropolitan Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God, „Babite – The Protection of the Mother of God” Convent, Dolna Mahala’s church of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Belyova church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. The town's cemetery church is dedicated to St. Nicholas, the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra. The chronological frameworks of the study are limited from the beginning of the 17th century to the end of the 19th century (with some exceptions - for example, the Church of St. Nicholas in the village of Maritsa (15th-16th century), the Belyova church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God (end of 4th century). Most of the churches in Samokov are built on old temples, which the patrons have known, but have probably changed over the centuries. It is suggested that each of the dedications that give the name of the temple achieve a certain spiritual need of the community that has initiated the construction of the temple. The model of organization of the sacred space of the town of Samokov is "The Virgin Mary - St. Nicholas", as the Virgin Mary nominates our world, the world of the living, and St. Nicholas - the afterworld, the world of the dead. The main thesis of the text states that the metropolitan center of Samokov, with its system of churches, monasteries, metropolises and chapels, has influenced the villages of the Samokov region and has played the role of a peculiar model.

Запознаване, усвояване и предаване на фолклорното знание в училищния проект "Аспарухово - бъдеще за фолклорния свят"

Author(s): Zornitsa Prandzheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

This research examines one unusual perspective towards the preservation of the cultural heritage through the Bulgarian educational system. It traces the possible mechanisms for inheritance and identification, that relate to the opportunity given to the children to get to know their roots (through fieldwork expeditions), to preserve the knowledge of their own ethnic community (and to become its heralds) and to pass it on to their coevals. The article examines the fact whether it is possible to give an opportunity to familiarise the children with their ethnicity, to preserve their knowledge of it and become heralds of the folklore knowledge, through projects in the realm of education. This research presents one practical attempt in the village of Asparuhovo, to find the answer of the above question. It reviews how the folklore is present in the "Asparuhovo - Future of the Folklore World" school project, what environment it creates, what it means for the participants and how important is it in the educational process. It defends the proposition, that after taking part in it the students change their understanding of the ethnic knowledge and have a basis for a different type of identification.

Икономическа и неикономическа ефективност в маркетинговите комуникации: теория и практика

Author(s): Alexander Hristov / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The article presents a relatively new direction, related to the understanding of the efficiency of marketing communications – the distinction between economic and non-economic efficiency. A thesis is supported, that discussions whether these activities should lead to sales or achieve other results do not have strong base, because the main point in these cases is the purchase that can be even postponed for the future. In this sense, measurement of the effectiveness in practice is important to be done based on indicators related both to economic and non-economic results.

Non-Verbal Communication in Business and Culture

Author(s): Silvana Jovcheska,Natka Jankova / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The professional communication nowadays is the basis for successful connection on professional and personal level. But the ability to understand and use non-verbal communication and body language is a powerful tool which helps in connecting with others in expressing what they really think. Experts in communication agree that when two people talk face to face, only a small part of the entire message which is shared contains the words they use. Most of the message is contained in the tone of voice, the accent, speed, volume and accidence. The use of non-verbal communication (silence) in writing, speaking and daily business communication is a routine in every culture, in each of the areas mentioned. A modern trend in modern companies worldwide is the usage and interpretation of non-verbal communication of their customers through marketing strategies with aim to improve their distribution and marketing in the world market but also the personal contact with their consumers. Understanding non-verbal communication and interpretation of silence in certain cultures and meeting them in person enhances their feeling of things, both in culture, business and literature.
