Половецкий костюм ХІ—ХІІІ вв. на территории восточноевропейских степей

Author(s): Alina A. Kharlamova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2018

The article gives general characteristics of male and female Cumans’ costume on the basis of iconographic, linguistic, and archaeological data. The results of data analysis indicate that the complex of male costume consisted of tunic-like shirt, skinny pants with wide step, a coat, boots, the shaft of which was attached to the belt, and a conic hat. A distinctive feature of the male costume are the straps. Women’s costume consisted of a shirt, pants and a coat, the cut of which did not differ from men’s clothing, boots, and a sophisticated headdress, which varied depending on the age and social position of women. Costume of Cumans’ tribes was a stable complex, common to the various Cumans’ unions, and has many similarities with the traditional costume of the Turkic ethnic groups of Central Asia and the North Caucasus.

“Not Quiet on the Front and Not Quiet in the Rear”: Of Social Anger during the First World War (The Bulgarian Case)

Author(s): Snezhana Dimitrova / Language(s): English Issue: 3-4/2017

This empirical study reveals a different, mostly hidden, reality of historical experience, i.e., the personal fears, dreams, and yearnings of individuals that had the potential to grow into collective emotions. Through the empirical and theoretical design of the study, the author presents Bulgarian society at war in terms of the critical situations of everyday life involving hunger, disease, death, corruption, injustice, and revolt. The author insists that the scenarios for what would become Bulgaria’s post-war reality were first written in the subjective contexts of a specific wartime reality – that of the practical past (in Hayden White’s term) of soldiers at war and their families. The study demonstrates how and why the justly angry soldier brought about conditions for a ‘breakthrough at the frontline’, inasmuch as this anger reveals that ‘the demoralization at the frontline’ was brought about by the soldier’s sensitivity to “things being unfair”. The article discusses the topography of the revolts (the so-called ‘women’s hunger revolts’) of ordinary urban and rural women, which occurred in places where the greatest numbers of men had been mobilized. The author shows that, in the anger of women, there “murmurs the horror of their forced situation” (Marguerite Duras). In analysing these outburst of social anger and the different ways in which different women (of various classes, social strata, and cultural milieus) protested against the war (revolts, petitions, individual and collective letters, addressed by Bulgarian and Turkish women to official institutions), the author thematizes women’s political and civic participation, provoked by total wartime mobilization. The article identifies the new sources of women’s emancipation during the war, including the affective reality of their experience, and thereby emphasizes that women’s public expression of anger was able to reveal the source of corrosion of the social tissue as lying in corruption and the ‘powers that tend to corrupt’. The front and the rear were bound together by anger at social injustice. Moreover: the study shows if the soldier’s wife had dared go that far, it was because she was empowered by the law itself, the law’s regulations aimed at the emancipation of the poor and uneducated woman, the soldier’s mother or wife, in order to restrict the possibility of corruption on the part of local authorities, a possibility that would have endangered the main purpose of the law, civil peace. The study is based on archive materials, still not fully ‘open’, including court martial documentation, women’s letters intercepted by censors, censors’ reports (some of them probably prepared by women), private archives of female Socialist activists, memoirs on women’s revolts, etc. The research methods of the study are developed and operationalized within the interdisciplinary field of microhistory and affect theory.

Conceptualizarea metaforică a puterii în jurnalismul de televiziune din România

Conceptualizarea metaforică a puterii în jurnalismul de televiziune din România

Author(s): Valerica Sporiş / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 19/2/2018

This paper aims to analyse conceptual categories clustered around power metaphors. My research focused on metaphorical conceptualizations of POWER in current Romanian TV journalism, in collecting metaphors I relied on the MIP and MIPVU methods. People frequently use metaphors in ordinary life situations. Identifying/Collecting (manually) power conceptual metaphors in media discourse was a challenge for me. Power is a polysemantic lexical term and an abstract noun. At present, the mappings of power are very interesting, because power is closely connected to politics. The metaphorical correspondences developed by word power differ from one context to another.

Electrochemical Impedance Study of BSCCO (2212) Cuprate Ceramic Additive to the Zinc Electrode in Ni-Zn Batteries

Author(s): Angelina Stoyanova-Ivanova,A. Vasev,P. Lilov,G. Ivanova,Yordan Marinov,A. Stoyanova,V. Mikli / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2018

Conductive cuprate BSCCO (2212) ceramics, exhibiting superconductivity a low temperatures (80 – 100К) can find other applications as well, such as an additive in the zinc electrode of nickel-zinc batteries. Ni-Zn cells are a potential cheaper alternative to replace toxic nickel-cadmium batteries. The positive effect of cuprate ceramic additives has been previously demonstrated. The study, presented here is focused on the electrochemical characterization of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (BSCCO 2212) nanocomposite conductive ceramics as an additive to the zinc electrode at 25oC and 50oC in an alkaline electrolyte containing KOH and Na3PO4. Three coin type electrodes (15mm in diameter) were investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy measurements by a Bio-logic SP-200 potentiostat in a wide frequency range (106 - 0.1 Hz). The tests were performed in a three-electrode electrochemical cell with different negative electrodes – one with “classic” conductive carbon additive, another with BSCCO 2212 additive, and the third without any additives (only ZnO). The obtained impedance spectra are compared and equivalent circuit models are proposed.

Electrosynthesis of Cadmium Selenide Nanoparticles with Simultaneous Extraction into P-Xylene

Author(s): S. S. Fomanyuk,V. O. Smilyk,G. Y. Kolbasov,I. A. Rusetskyi,T. A. Mirnaya / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2018

Colloidal solutions of ~2 nm CdSe nanoparticles have been obtained by electrosynthesis with simultaneous extraction into p-xylene. The effect of electrolyte composition on the structure of electrodeposited CdSe nanoparticles has been established, their absorption and photoluminescence spectra have been analyzed. Exciton absorption of light by synthesized CdSe nanoparticles splits into three bands, which is characteristically for the small CdSe nanoparticles. Photoluminescence excited at wavelengths corresponding to curve bending decreases in intensity within the 350 -550 nm region with a maximum of 430 nm. This fact indicates on the formation of small (~ 2 nm) of CdSe nanoparticles in the process of electrosynthesis as well. Studies have shown that by the proposed method of electrochemical synthesis it is possible to obtain nanoparticles that are promising for the creation of optical liquid–crystalline composites.
