This article discusses relationships between various ethnic and national groups that were characteristic for the North-Western part of region called Eastern Borderlands at the turn of XIX century. Vast literature on this subject is available, but it should be noted that the subject itself remains under strong political and ideological influence, it is also surrounded by many myths and common beliefs; and last but not least, there are historical sources that still have never been used in the discussion. One of such sources, not yet being used for research on ethnic divisions within the Polish-Lithuanian borderland at the beginning of XX century, are data gathered by Warsaw Statistical Committee in volume II (Ethnic Statistics for the Congress Poland) of the book Territorial Development of Polish Nationality(1917), by Włodzimierz Wakar. This work includes information on headcount of Polish and Lithuanian populations in years 1910 and 1914, divided by all communes and towns in the Suwalki Governorate. These statistical data are of exceptional scientific value, as they were gathered and aggregated at the commune level, showing detailed characteristics of ethnic transformations. By comparing the information regarding populations’ headcount in 1914 and 1910, it is possible to assess which of the two populations grew within this 4-year period. Thorough knowledge of dynamics and direction of ethnic (nationalistic) transformations taking place within the Suwalki Governorate, might bring us some interesting answers. It might help us find out if just before the World War I other regions inhabited by both Polish and Lithuanian populations, such as Vilnius, Grodno and Kaunas provinces, were under the process of polonization or lithuanization.

Muzea w internecie w odpowiedzi na „kulturowy szok” pandemii COVID-19

Muzea w internecie w odpowiedzi na „kulturowy szok” pandemii COVID-19

Author(s): Mateusz Maria Bieczyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2023

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the cultural sector worldwide has been severe. From the beginning, it became clear that the changes resulting from the restrictions would not be without an impact on the operations of museums and galleries. According to UNESCO’s May 2020 projections, 10% of the museums affected by the pandemic were not expected to reopen. This included a huge number of 8,550 museums that might never open. The collision of cultural institutions with the new reality was described as “dramatic” and called a “culture shock.” Museums had to react quickly to the unexpected. Covid-19 highlighted many organizational and infrastructural weaknesses throughout the sector. One of them was the absence or only a small presence of museums on the Internet. Meanwhile, it was the Internet that, in the face of the “forced closure” of public buildings, became the only possible channel to maintain the continuity of the business of making collections public. As a result of the transformation of many previously planned cultural events into their virtual versions, the digital transit of museums seems to be the main effect of the pandemic’s impact on museum institutions in the field of their cultural activities.

Spirala i amplituda. Dialektyka sztuki

Spirala i amplituda. Dialektyka sztuki

Author(s): Cezary Woźniak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

The article presents a certain dialectic of art, the dialectic developed on the basis of such concepts as essence, potentiality, completeness, sense and phenomenon. The completeness of art is hereby understood as the maximum actualisation of its potential, the pretence of art would be therefore something, in which the potentiality of art isn’t elaborated on. What would be the sense of art then? It would be the process of certain actualisation of art potentiality. The history of art then presents itself as the amplitude whose extents are drawn by the level of the actualisation of that potentiality; from the pretence of art to the appearance of immanence, the epiphanic experience of the omni-completeness. This might have been the most maximalist vision of art, which can be found, for example, in Schiller, Schelling, Heidegger or Chögyam Trungpa. We can also imagine a different variant of dialectic of art, in which its story would have unfolded in form of a spiral. The history of art would then have been driven by the need for the realisation of its telos. It would have been the achievement of complete sense of art inherent to its concept, which may be derived from Hegel’s aesthetics. Can this spiral and this amplitude be intersecting? And if so, how could this affect understanding of art? It seems that the dialectic form of spiral provides art with the terminological integrity, the possibility of its nominal creation, whereas the form of amplitude reinforces art as the epiphany of omni-completeness. Finally, the art would be the form of energy flow on the certain horizon, horizon of art; the form of flow into its condensation points of completeness; and the moments of transparency of this eternal flow…

Влияние на образователните нива на родителите върху образователните нагласи на детето

Author(s): Nikolay Nikolov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

Education and upbringing are in a state of multiple correlative relationships. Attitudes and positive attitudes towards education are nurtured from early childhood within the family and close family circle. The presentation focuses on two parallel hypotheses, in which the dependencies between the level of education of the parents and the educational stages reached by the children are investigated. The widely circulated hypothesis that children from disadvantaged families with low educational status and material difficulties are much less likely to reach high educational stages and vice versa. On the other side, the hypothesis is presented that parents' education is important, but not decisive in relation to their children's attitudes and motivation for learning.

Традиционен срещу дигитален PR – предимства и недостатъци

Author(s): Lyuboslava Mitkova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

The purpose of this report is to analyze the transformations that have occurred in the field of public relations due to the introduction of digital technologies in the profession and to define the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and digital PR. The study focuses on the observation and analysis of the new phenomena in the field of public relations, in the aspect of the most common techniques and tools used by PR practitioners in their daily activities. The method used to collect information is an online survey conducted among public relations professionals. The results of the survey highlighted several elements of the profession that have undergone changes due to the rise of social media platforms. First and foremost, the element of networks and information emerges, as social media allows practitioners to create and maintain strong relationships and contacts while helping them stay current with relevant trends. The second element that emerges is helping to build and maintain a reputation and a more positive public image - a key element of PR. Strategies related to building this reputation, along with the companies' values, are coming to the fore, using social media as an important platform to promote them. From another perspective, the company's reach and communication with the public through social media allows for a two way conversation with the audience, along with facilitating the dissemination of information and gaining greater visibility online. The study succeeds in outlining the importance of social media while highlighting the limitations it faces as a tool.

Communication in a second language and individual differences: Effects of student age, gender, and socioeconomic status

Communication in a second language and individual differences: Effects of student age, gender, and socioeconomic status

Author(s): Zheng Li,Bing Li / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

It has been widely argued that willingness to communicate (WTC) in a second language (L2) is a dual construct of the learner’s trait and state. This study aimed to explore the relationships between trait-level antecedents (students’ demographic features) and their L2 WTC. A sample of 1,502 university students was recruited to participate in this study. Data on their age, gender, and family socioeconomic status (SES) were collected. A questionnaire of L2 WTC was adopted to measure the participants’ WTC in meaning-focused activities and WTC in form-focused activities. A path model was tested via structural equation modelling, and significant relationships between student demographic features (age, gender, and SES) and L2 WTC were observed. The major findings were that male students had higher WTC in meaning-focused activities, but female students showed higher WTC in form-focused activities, and student age was negatively related to WTC in meaning-focused activities.

The art of education: Creative thinking and video games

The art of education: Creative thinking and video games

Author(s): Lina Georgieva,Alexander Nikulin / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has shed new light on some significant problems that have been present in the education systems for decades. Тhe lack of various educational methods is becoming more and more evident, leading to a decreasing interest in learning and critical thinking. Оn the other hand, more and more research shows that different types of digital games can enhance creative and critical thinking in students. А closer look at the requirements of the educational programs shows how strict they are in their demands on students. Digital games like role playing games can be a bridge between students’ imaginations and complex educational material. Video games feature a variety of game mechanics that stimulate creative thinking and spark interest in otherwise difficult to understand topics. Motivation and engagement in digital games can be used in a specific way for educational purposes. If we think of teaching as an art in itself, what better method of teaching than through interactive arts.

Author(s): Isabel Heinemann / Language(s): Czech Issue: 01/2023

Výzkum násilné germanizace dětí odebraných biologickým rodičům komplikuje nedostatek písemných pramenů i svědectví obětí. Tyto děti, umístěné v ústavech a následně předané německým pěstounům, byly často velmi malé, takže si tuto traumatickou část svého života nezapamatovaly. Mnohým z nich pak způsobilo další trauma poválečné odebrání od pěstounů a přesun k rodičům či příbuzným do vlasti.

Family control, leverage, and quality of earnings: a study on manufacturing companies in Indonesia

Author(s): Sri Murni,- Rahmawati,Ari Kuncara Widagdo,Eko Arief Sudaryono / Language(s): English Issue: 11-12/2022

Earnings quality can be influenced by family control through entrenchment effect and alignment effect. This study examines family control in improving earnings quality and leverage in moderating family control on earnings quality – the quantitative descriptive research method used as a research method. Manufacturing enterprises registered on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for 2017 and 2018 make up the research population. The data in this study are unbalanced. Secondary data was gathered from annual reports, prospectus reports, the Indonesian Capital Market Directory, and other sources for this study. The research topic is determined by applying the definition of a family business. The variables in this study include abnormal cash flows, abnormal production costs and, abnormal discretionary costs. They were testing the hypothesis using regression analysis (Ordinary Least Square/OLS). The results showed that family control did not affect real earnings management. This shows that strong family control does not affect earnings quality. The leverage variable only moderates the effect of family control on abnormal cash flow from operations (REMCFO).
