From its origins in the early modern period up until today, German bibliology has undergone a huge transformation both in terms of its relationship to other subjects and its research areas. The article describes the development of bibliology in Germany from its beginnings in bibliographic and librarian contexts, over its evolvement as a field of study in its own rights in the late 18th century, until its current situation as a university subject. Today, German book science is a relatively small discipline which might profit from integration in broader media studies already proposed a decade ago. It has links to many other humanities subjects, especially librarian, literary, linguistic and cultural studies, and sees its task in integrating interdisciplinary research on the book instead of monopolising it. Due to the lack of an overall book theory or model, this also means making use of the research approaches of these adjoining disciplines whenever they seem promising. The bibliological studies on all aspects of books, implicitly oriented on the steps of production, distribution and reception of books and conducted by the few professorial chairs of book science, are complemented by several non-university institutions and research groups.

The assessment of the current state of bibliology in Czechia, i.e. directions of its development and research accomplishments as well as staff training, is impossible without a historical overview of the evolution of bibliology as a more or less independent scholarly discipline. A study has recently been devoted to the subject, but only for the period until the beginning of the Second World War. That is why the author of the article, drawing on the literature on the subject, internet sources and information obtained from the staff of relevant research institutions, focuses first of all on the second half of the twentieth century, i.e. the role and accomplishments of the most important figures involved in the development of the discipline, the position of bibliology in the higher education system at the time as well as the changes which occurred in it in connection with the political breakthrough of 1989 and the emergence of computerised systems towards the end of the twentieth century. A substantial part of the article is devoted to the events from the last two decades. The author notes the rather difficult situation of the discipline at the turn of the millennium as well as attempts to rebuild it, manifested primarily in its restoration to the curriculum in the 2007/2008 academic year, increasingly successful eff orts of libraries and museums (“institutions of memory”) to obtain funds for scholarly activities, and attempts to formulate a concept of further development of the discipline. In the conclusion the author refl ects on the prospects for the development of bibliology in the nearest future, as well as measures that may lead to is further evolution and revival in broad research into the history of book culture in Czechia.

Pilgrimage guides belong to the most widely published types of religious literature in Bohemia and Moravia in the 17th and 18th centuries. During this period Baroque religiosity grew stronger and the Catholic Church sought to consolidate its position in the country, which inclined to the ideas of the Reformation. Religious pilgrimages, festivities and ceremonies along with the worship of saints and faith in miracles, served as promotional tools of the Catholic faith. In order to spread Marian Piety, Czech and Moravian printers published works written by the representatives of church elites. In their works they dealt with the history of pilgrimage sites related to the Virgin Mary. The prints were published in Latin and German. In addition to the treatise about the pilgrimage sites and miraculous healings, they included prayers, songs and recommendations as to how to behave during a pilgrimage. It was not only the text component which the reader found interesting; he/she was also impressed by the graphic design of the print. The book decoration consisted of vignettes, friezes, typographic ornaments, lines or clichés, which fulfi lled an aesthetic and practical function. The customers’ interest was stimulated by copper engraving illustrations and Baroque allegorical frontispieces depicting a Marian statue and miracle picture or by depiction of the concrete pilgrimage site in the form of a veduta. The authors included some of the important Czech illustrators and engravers who collaborated with famous foreign artists.

The article is devoted to the evolution of interest in the paper mill in Duszniki-Zdrój for over two centuries. The paper mill was established before 1562, when the Kłodzko region was part of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The mill played an important economic and cultural role for nearly three centuries. It stopped its operations during the great economic crisis and in 1939 was sold to the city of Duszniki. After the Second World War and incorporation of Silesia with the Kłodzko region into Poland, the mill was o fficially recognised as a historic building (listed in 1956) and in 1968 it was turned into the Museum of Papermaking. It 2011 the paper mill was granted the status of a Monument of History, which paved the way for it to be included in the UNESCO list.Interest in the history of the mill dates back to at least the second half of the eighteenth century. In 1789 a detailed history of the mill was published in Beyträge zur Beschreibung von Schlesien by F.A. Zimmermann and a lot of the information included in it at the time still remains relevant. During the following century interest in the history of the mill was shown by J. Kögler and W. Hohaus, and in the early twentieth century — by F. Hössle or B. Maiwald. After the Second World War the history of the mill was studied by many Polish historians, including K. Maleczyńska, M. Kutzner, M. Przyłecki, K. Sarnecki and W. Tomaszewska. The interest in the paper mill and its history has been boosted on an unprecedented scale over the recent decade, after eff orts were launched to have the mill entered in the UNESCO list. The paper mill has been studied by e.g. R. Eysymontt, A. Fortuna-Marek, G. Grajewski, A. Kozieł, R. Sachs, A. Szeląg, B. Szmygin, as well as J. Bałchan and M. Szymczyk, both of whom were associated with the museum. In 2018 the Museum of Papermaking published a Monograph of the Duszniki-Zdrój Paper Mill, which contains the latest fi ndings about the history of the paper mill and which will be used in the nomination for the mill to be included in the World Heritage List.

The author has made an attempt to trace the history of the second edition of De humani corporis fabrica by Andreas Vesalius (Basel, 1555), which remains in the possession of Cieszyn Library since it was included in the collections of the Jesuit Leopold Jan Szersznik. Part I (Roczniki Biblioteczne 65/2021) presents the history of this copy before it was bought by Szersznik in 1802. In Part II, the author characterises Szersznik’s medical collections and indicates the significance of Vesalius’s work for them. He concentrates on the descriptive cataloguing of De humani corporis fabrica by Cieszyn librarians since its purchase in 1802. Then, he indicates other books in Szersznik’s collections, previously belonging to 16th-century European physicians, including the volume belonging to Johann Crato von Crafftheim, an outstanding Renaissance physician from Wrocław. At the end, the author describes the Cieszyn copy of De humani corporis fabrica in detail and attempts to assess its readership.

Juraj Tesák Mošovský was an important Protestant church dignitary and one of the most prolific humanist writers among Slovak authors who found professional employment in the Kingdom of Bohemia at the turn of the 17th century. In total, the professional literature lists more than 38 titles of his Czech and Latin as well as bilingual Czech-Latin writings. Tesák is the author of religious-educational moral treatises, reflections, sermons and occasional verse works. His work was mostly theological in nature and probably revealed Mošovský’s inclination towards Utraquism. Around 1577, he was consecrated (ordained) and signed the church order of Utraquist priests. Therefore, the well-known Jesuit censor Antonín Koniaš included Tesák’s writings in his index of forbidden books, and during the period of Counter-Reformation and recatholicisation in Bohemia, they were destroyed en masse. The study provides an overview of Mošovský’s prints, dividing them into two categories: the files of Tesák Mošovský which are not recorded in the indexes of prohibited books (11 items) and his unpreserved writings (21 items). A list of the prints that were published twice is also added (3 items). The initial analysis of what is known about the prints that were supposed to be destroyed (and have not been preserved to this day) showed that they were mostly prints that, according to Koniaš, contained heretical teachings that did not correspond to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Among them were also writings in which Tesák Mošovský expressed a positive attitude towards the persons who were considered heretics. Finally, there were prints that referred to Hussiteism and older Hussite songs. It is natural that these were the reasons why so many prints of J. Tesák Mošovský were condemned to destruction, and why even literary history during the period of socialism was not interested in them.

Against the backdrop of the considerations of the scope of the term “publishing art” (in opposition to the scopes of related terms: “book art,” “art of the book,” “beautiful book,” “artist’s book,” “aesthetics of print,” “graphic design,” “typography,” “graphic arts,” “script”) and its draft definition, an inventory of features making up the amorphous landscape of publishing art is presented. This description makes it possible to understand the nature and history of collecting and exhibiting publishing art objects in libraries and museums in Wrocław between the 16th and 21st century, which, in 1973, resulted in the establishment of the Publishing Art Department at the National Museum in Wrocław.

As a result of the operation of taking over and securing library collections from the so-called Recovered Territories, undertaken after World War II, part of the resources of the library and archive of Castle Karolat in the Silesian village of Siedlisko (German: Carolath) was moved to the University of Warsaw Library. This article presents the history of the Castle Karolat library and describes the most valuable manuscripts from there, now stored in the Manuscripts Department of the University of Warsaw Library. They include interesting — and, as regards research, important — castle archives, which provide sources for the economic history of the Carolath-Beuthen majorat, inventories, financial and accounting books, architectural drawings from the times of the reconstruction of the castle in the 19th century, lists of the maps and books preserved in the castle archives and other items. The collection also includes interesting memorabilia of the castle owners, like gymnasium and home education notebooks, records of academic lectures delivered at the beginning of the 19th century at Landwirtschaftliche Akademie Möglin and Halle university by, among others, Albrecht Daniel Thaer, Georg Ernst Wilhelm Crome and Friedrich August Wolf. 16th-century prayer books, 18th-century official lists and a military treatise on cavalry deployment and drills written by Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig von Arnim-Suckow, major of the Prussian army, are also worth attention. The archive also includes part of the heritage — scattered in Polish and German libraries — of the theologian Gustav Richtsteig as well as of members of the Carolath-Beuthen family, who lived in the estate from the 18th to 20th century. An interesting item in the collection is a well-preserved 19th-century herbarium, containing about 1000 local plants collected in the estate and castle gardens in the same century.

This article presents the assumptions of a currently being developed method of diagnosing the needs of public library patrons. The theoretical part presents recent research in this field conducted in Poland. English-language literature on this subject as well as relevant norms are also referred to. Then, the concept of the developed method is outlined. It consists of three complementary elements: an analysis of statistical data, an online survey conducted among the readers of a given institution, and observations and in-person interviews of users. All of these stages are discussed one by one. This type of combination of quantitative and qualitative research enables a reliable diagnosis of the needs of readers in a selected institution. This has been confirmed by a pilot study carried out in a public library of a town with less than 100,000 inhabitants. Its results and conclusions are presented in the last part of this article
