Is the glass ceiling inaccessible? The educational situation of Roma youth in Hungary

Author(s): Veronika Bocsi,Tímea Ceglédi / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

After the turn of the millennium, European studies unanimously noted that there are significant differences between Roma and non-Roma students at all levels of education. In the last two decades of educational policy in Hungary, elements aimed at inclusion and maintaining selectivity have been mixed together. In our cross-sectional study, we present the situation of young Roma people in the educational system of Hungary in 2016. In addition to outlining the overall picture (employment and education), we also look at softer indicators, such as the educational plans and motivations of Roma youth. We use the Hungarian Youth Research 2016 database (respondents aged between 15 and 29), including Roma or dual identity youth (N=328). The probability sample of 8000 persons is representative for age, district and type of settlement (N=8000). Our results have shown that inequalities are climbing upwards. While inclusion and catching-up with non-Roma students can be detected in primary and secondary vocational education (i.e., without the baccalaureate), there is a significant gap in terms of obtaining a baccalaureate and entering tertiary education. Studying attitudes related to learning points to the fact that young Roma people have begun to see education as a value in Hungary, but at the same time they are confronted with a lack of opportunities.

EXPLORING DIMENSIONS OF CHANGING PEDAGOGIES AND CHALLENGES FACED BY STUDENTS IN APPLYING NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN LEARNING

EXPLORING DIMENSIONS OF CHANGING PEDAGOGIES AND CHALLENGES FACED BY STUDENTS IN APPLYING NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN LEARNING

Author(s): Rendani Sipho Netanda / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The need to stay abreast in knowledge economy has led to migration from Open Distance Learning to Open Distance e-Learning at UNISA. Central to this pedagogical change has been the fast advancement in the technological universe, with new media technologies being widely adopted across the globe for bridging the transactional distance between students and the OdeL institution. Using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology as its theoretical lens, the study sought to find answers to the following question: What challenges do NMTS present to OdeL students as they learn using them? The aim is to explore the challenges that OdeL students experience when using new media technologies in learning. Data was collected using indepth interviews with learners. During data analysis, thematic categorisation was used. The study divulged that the many of students from far-flung rural areas still have limited access to NMTs, which impact on their academic performance, and result in low retention and success rates. This finding suggests that for an ODL institution to achieve an increased probability to retain students and success rate, it must support them with access to NMTs. It further suggests that access to NMTs may help students do better in and to complete their studies. These findings unmasked that to bridge transactional distance, ODL institutions must support students, particularly those who are from rural areas by providing them with NMTs. The study limited its focus to UNISA’s Durban hub.

Проблемите с претовареността на учениците в прогимназиален етап и възможностите за оптимизация на учебното време

Author(s): Svetlana Nancheva,Philip Petrov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 2/2024

A current popular topic in the Bulgarian education system is the overload of students from the pre-secondary stage (5th-7th grade) and the insufficient time for good practical classes. Instead of reducing the teaching material, which is the most often mentioned solution to the problem, the authors propose an alternative by using reserves from the organizational framework. A brief historical review was made and experience from a system that was successfully implemented in Bulgaria. Some possible modern applications of the reviewed methods are discussed.

Interpretation of Personality Theory in the Context of Writing Disorders and Mirror Writing

Interpretation of Personality Theory in the Context of Writing Disorders and Mirror Writing

Author(s): Vasiliki Papanikolaou / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

This study aims to contribute to the understanding of mirror writing by employing modern neurophysiological techniques, specifically Optics Challenging Dynamics (P 100), and by providing pedagogical approaches for problem-solving. The focus of this research is to investigate the disorders of written expression in typically developing children who are introduced to the process of learning to write. Additionally, it examines the developmental differences in visual-kinetic skills among preschool and first-grade elementary school children. The research hypotheses revolve around the reduction in mirror writing occurrence during handwriting practice, the progressive development of visuospatial orientation and visuomotor skills, the impact of hand preference on handwriting tendencies, and the potential association between dyslexic handwriting and prolonged P100 latency in neurophysiological examinations. The study involves a sample of 100 participants, including kindergarten children and first-grade elementary school students, and utilizes both standardized tests and neurophysiological assessments, specifically visual evoked potentials (VEPs), to gather data. By addressing these research objectives, this study aims to contribute to the advancement of visual-motor abilities, particularly in visuo-spatial discrimination, controlled visual attention, and the healthy functioning of the visual pathway, while highlighting the differences in neuronal maturation and interhemispheric communication that underlie mirror writing

Zabawa dzieci jako przejaw twórczego uczestnictwa

Author(s): Laura Camas-Garrido,Gonzalo Jover / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2024

This article aims to investigate the intricate relationship between play, creativity, and children’s participation. Key questions guiding this exploration include: What do we mean when we discuss children’s play? What meanings have been associated with playful activities? How are creativity and play interconnected? By examining the works of Johan Huizinga, Donald Winnicott, John Dewey, Jane Addams, and Martha Nussbaum, the study posits that children’s play is a fundamental expression of social and cultural engagement during childhood. Play not only facilitates children’s understanding and familiarity with the cultural dimensions of society but also encourages their active participation in the recreational aspects of life and self-exploration. Consequently, play emerges as an experience of creation, differentiation, and mutual recognition, fostering self-awareness and social interaction through the expression of daily attitudes and behaviours.

Homo Novus in the Conquest of the Empire: The Playful Element in Fascist Propaganda and Pedagogy: A Case Study

Homo Novus in the Conquest of the Empire: The Playful Element in Fascist Propaganda and Pedagogy: A Case Study

Author(s): Valerio Marinelli / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

The Italo Ethiopian War (1935–1936) represents, par excellence, the war of fascism for fascism. It is no coincidence that the extensive use of military resources was accompanied by an extraordinary propaganda campaign, which also had clear and evident pedagogical implications. The regime, at the peak of its consensus and in the full deployment of its totalitarian vocation, took on the objective of raising the young and very young generations “to the level of the Empire.” The pedagogical project of the homo novus experienced a qualitative leap. The combination of war and Africa, filled with heroic fascination and ancestral mystery, stroke the imagination of teachers, educators, textbook compilers, and, similarly, excited the imagination of the youth. The enthusiasm generated by propaganda, or the propaganda itself artificially returned to the public sphere, promoted the psychological dynamics of “celebration” and play. Although fascist pedagogy underestimated the relationship between learning and play, the playful element actually emerged as an important factor in political mobilization and, above all, imperialistic education. The didactic strategies of elementary school teachers, developed in preparation for and during the African conflict, are proof of this. However, even the private industry aligned itself with the pedagogical influences of the regime, introducing a wide variety of toys on the market that served to shape an imperialist, warlike, chauvinistic, and racist mentality. The province of Perugia is undoubtedly an interesting field of investigation: on the territory of the “capital of the fascist revolution,” starting from 1923, governing groups making loyalty to the Duce the driving force of their political rise took over the institutional and administrative structures. But that’s not all: unlike elsewhere, the Gentile reform enjoyed widespread consensus in Perugia from the beginning. Moreover, the majority of teachers joined Mussolini’s movement from the very beginning.

Korczakowskie „prawo dziecka do szacunku” i wypowiadania swoich myśli w polskim postępowaniu cywilnym

Author(s): Urszula Chęcińska,Kinga Flaga-Gieruszyńska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2024

The article consists of two parts. The first part, based on pedagogical publications, discusses the pedagogical activity of Janusz Korczak as a precursor and advocate for children’s rights. The second part, based on legal publications, presents considerations concerning the rights of the child and their correct reflection, related to the child’s right to be heard in civil cases. The article ends with a conclusion about the necessity of cooperation between educators and lawyers at a time when there is a growing awareness of the need to look for new legal solutions related to the presence of “children without childhood” and “childhood beyond borders.” The article is a preview of further publications on this topic.

Aggression in School Children and Adolescents: Its Relationship with Empathy by Spiritual Sensitivity

Aggression in School Children and Adolescents: Its Relationship with Empathy by Spiritual Sensitivity

Author(s): Janusz Surzykiewicz,Sebastian Binyamin Skalski-Bednarz,Łukasz Kwadrans,Jolanta Muszyńska,Karol Konaszewski / Language(s): English Issue: 10/2024

Background: Aggression is one of the important problems of psychosocial functioning, but it is also an area of physical and mental health among children and adolescents. The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of spiritual sensitivity as a mediator in the relationship between empathy and aggression in a group of school children and adolescents.Participants and procedure: The study included 281 children and adolescents (54% were girls) aged 9–14 years. The study procedure consisted of completing three questionnaires measuring spiritual sensitivity, empathy and aggression. The structural equation modeling using maximum likelihood estimation were used to determine the relationship between variables. Results: Our results suggest that spiritual sensitivity may mediate the relationship between empathy and aggression. Including spiritual sensitivity in the model reduced the negative relationship between the independent and dependent variables, indicating full mediation. Conclusions: In conclusion, the present study has provided some findings suggesting that spiritual sensitivity may indeed be one of the possible mechanisms by which religiosity leads to positive behavioral outcomes. The findings suggest that such internal factors may be important in leveling aggression and that focusing solely on environmental and situational influences may not fully capture individual differences in thinking, emotions and behavior.

Nowoczesność pedagogiczna w Panu Podstolim Ignacego Krasickiego

Nowoczesność pedagogiczna w Panu Podstolim Ignacego Krasickiego

Author(s): Dariusz Stępkowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2024

The aim of the present article is to confront Ignacy Krasicki’s statements on education and teaching expressed in the novel Pan Podstoli with the idea of modernity. The concepts of educability and (self)education have been used to describe this idea. The article used a linguistic methodology based on the theory of semantic potentials and the theory of conceptual integration. As a result of this exploration, the presence of the both pedagogical concepts as neosemantisms was confirmed and consequently the initial thesis accepted as true. The implication of this is as following: (1) the dominant reading method of Krasicki’s writings needs to be reinterpreted in the history of educational theories, (2) the concepts of educability and (self)education enable ideas of modernity to be identified in relation to both pedagogical theory and practice, and (3) the application of linguistic theories to pedagogy not only opens up a new field of research, but also offers a new access to pedagogical texts.

PIONIRSKO DJELO U STRUČNOJ LITERATURI O RADU ODGAJATELJA U MEDRESAMA

Author(s): Zubejda Gobeljić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 2/2015

Priručnik za rad odgajatelja u medresama prvijenac je na našim prostorima u literaturi iz oblasti odgajateljskog rada u medresama. To je ozbiljan autorski poduhvat dviju iskusnih odgajateljica Behram-begove medrese, Merzije Kasumović i Edine Tokić, i predstavlja njihov doprinos definiranju aktivnosti odgajatelja u radu s učenicima u vannastavnom periodu u internatu i školi.

Rola edukacji muzycznej we współczesnym systemie nauczania

Rola edukacji muzycznej we współczesnym systemie nauczania

Author(s): Wojciech Marchwica / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1-2/2024

In recent decades, the level of music education in Polish general schools has been systematically decreasing. This results both from the lowering of the importance of music as a school subject and from the common belief that teaching music is a waste of time. Meanwhile, both neuropsychological research and observations resulting from the analysis of American data on the skill growth depending on selected school subjects indicate that systematic and practical contact with music for a minimum of two years significantly increases the intellectual abilities of young people – especially in the field of science. The author suggests increasing the role of music as a subject in the Polish public education system.
