Academic education versus the first steps in the speech and language therapy profession. Questionnaire survey / Edukacja akademicka a pierwsze kroki w zawodzie logopedy. Badania ankietowe

Author(s): Emilia Jesiotr,Dominik Sieńko,Agnieszka Zofia Rataj-Pietrzak / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 11/2022

The unregulated legal status of the speech and language therapy profession and speech and language therapy as an independent scientific discipline are reasons for significant differences in the way SLTs are educated in Poland. In order to find out the opinions of students and graduates of SLT studies (working in the profession) on academic education, the survey was conducted with 87 participants. Conducting the survey in the conditions of a pandemic situation also made it possible to assess distance forms of teaching and revealed disproportions in the level of satisfaction with practical and theoretical courses conducted in this form. The collected opinions form the basis for the reflections undertaken in the article on SLT and the possible and necessary changes in the system of training future SLTs.

Author(s): Eriola Qafzezi / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: The purpose of the current paper is to discuss the necessity for the internationalisation of Albanian HEIs, in light of the recent changes that HEIs in Albania are undergoing. Online collaborative learning is thus introduced as a necessary innovation to be embraced in HE in Albania, illustrated by implementation and findings and comments based on an authentic case study undertaken in the third course, Bachelor level, Fan S. Noli University, Korça, Albania. Study design/methodology/approach: The paper is supported by a theoretical background on online collaborative learning and factual data about the current state of HEIs in Albania. The latter factual information illustrates the necessity of embracing online learning practices through collaborative learning, supported by examples from the case study. The paper adopts a mixed method approach, combining qualitative analysis with quantitative data derived from surveys carried out with Albanian students. Findings: There are some conclusions and findings that we have derived from the factual information presented about the current state of HEIs in Albania, combined with data extracted from the case study. They point to the necessary innovations involving Albanian teachers and students of HEIs in online collaborative learning. Originality/value: The current study bears original value because it provides direct links between the current need for the internationalisation of HEIs in Albania and online collaborative learning as a concrete way to bring about internationalisation. Examples brought are also authentic, taken from the case study, supported by data from pre- and post-implementation surveys conducted with Albanian students who took part in the case study.

Eğitimde Web 3.0 Kullanımı: Potansiyel ve Zorlukları

Author(s): İbrahim Hörküç / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 30/2023

Development of information and communication technologies, particularly the advancement of the internet and web technologies, has facilitated students' access to information and enriched their learning experiences. However, as the need for accessing accurate information increases within the vast sea of knowledge, web technologies are also evolving to serve this purpose. Web 3.0 technology, also known as the semantic web, makes information meaningful, enabling users to access information more effectively. The use of semantic web in education has the potential to make learning experiences more flexible, personalized, and effective. However, there are also challenges associated with the use of semantic web in education. Security concerns, costs, standardization, and pedagogical issues may limit the widespread adoption of semantic web.

Key Performance Indicators – Input, Intervening and Output Variables

Author(s): Phil Budgell / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

In this article, the author argues for an open and transparent use of data that already exists but is not collected, collated and analysed within the education system in Bulgaria. This data needs to become Key Performance Indicators that will drive up: – the Quality of Education; and – the Standards of Achievement. The author focusses on the relationship between: – Input Variables (Prior Attainment and Delegated Financial Resources); – Intervening Variables (Patterns of Expenditure) and – Output Variable (Attendance, Standards of Attainment and Post-school Participation). With one exception, real data is collated, analysed and presented using a range of algebraic and graphical approaches. Finally, the author concludes that with greater subsidiarity (i.e., greater delegation of responsibility, authority and accountability); the greater the need for reliable and valid assessment data to hold the education system to account at school, regional and national level.

Author(s): Yana Chankova,Krassimir Spasov / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This paper focusses on the use of specific information packaging constructions, based on data extracted from seven recordings of the speech and debate tournaments that the Bulgarian English Speech and Debate Tournaments Foundation organizes at a high-school level. The main aim is to describe and discuss examples of negative inversions, clefts, passives, existentials, and extrapositions by applying qualitative and quantitative methods. The analysis of the data shows that participation in debates can encourage students to make use of focussing constructions in argumentative discourse and help them showcase their mastery of the English language. Moreover, the study offers valuable insight into the communication patterns used by Bulgarian teenagers as speakers of English as a foreign language.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF A SCHOOL LIBRARY INTO A PUBLIC LIBRARY

THE TRANSFORMATION OF A SCHOOL LIBRARY INTO A PUBLIC LIBRARY

Author(s): Mircea-Iosif Rus / Language(s): English Issue: 26/2021

Many times, various “things” happen in the life of a school library, either it moves to another premises, or it changes its name but, sometimes, certain libraries transform themselves, so that, sometimes, a school library turns into a public library due to several reasons: either the number of pupils decreased, or by the school move the change of the line is imposed, etc. Our scientific approach looks at such a transformation especially as the results of such approach must be a sign of alert for the decision makers because, in recent years the number of readers decreased very much as well as that of the books read under the terms of the appearance of a “competition” of the state of the art electronic devices such as e-books, tablets or even last generation cell phones which allow for the book reading. At this moment, these devices are a serious competitor for printed books, especially as there are books in electronic format which may be easily downloaded into the previously named devices. And, last but not least, the digitalization of the libraries is an important step which takes us to the transformation of school libraries into public libraries.

Medical Humanities are a topic of interest for Romanian medical students today. The role of the ESP teacher has been constantly challenged in the last two decades or more, once issues such as globalization and the development of technology have started to influence every field of our activities. Likewise, the pandemic has also come with its challenges that also needed to be taken into consideration as the teaching activity has been carried out, since then, mainly in the online medium. This paper is going to address some of the changes that have been implemented in the ESP classes at the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi, Romania, in the attempt to respond to the present-day needs of our students who, along with their linguistic training, have to develop interdisciplinary skills that are so much needed in their future profession. E-Tutor Tandems in a COIL Course – Design, Implementation and Evaluation

Author(s): Lisa-Mari Langesee,Nelli Ukhova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Research on digital collaboration scenarios in Higher Education (HE) is characterized by various approaches that often define the acquisition and development of global skills as learning goals. Virtual Collaborative Learning (VCL) in HE represents one approach to facilitating students’ global skills. Depending on the use case, these learning arrangements can include case study-based group learning under e-tutorial supervision. This paper focuses on the perspective of e-tutors – specially qualified student assistants – and their competence development during the summer semester of 2022. Based on previous research findings, a tandem setting was chosen for their competence development. This paper mainly compares expectations and experiences regarding the competence improvement of e-tutors in a multinational tandem. These expectations and experiences were queried through two quantitative questionnaires utilizing 5-point Likert scales and one short follow-up questionnaire after the finalization of VCL. In general, the positive expectations of the e-tutors were fulfilled, but not to a similar extent for each competence category. Especially the development of social and pedagogical competencies was positive, whereas the development of intercultural competencies was challenging. Several recommendations for action were derived, which impact further e-tutor training.

Създаване на интерактивни видеоуроци за преподаване и оценяване знанията на студентите с Edpuzzle

Author(s): Ivelina Petrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4s/2023

The pandemic was of great help in modernizing the classroom. Back to face-to-face classes, the same internet tools used during the emergency remote teaching can still be employed by teachers as students want to learn “in their way” – using the mobile inside the class and having control over their learning. Online video platforms are popular because of their advantages. However, watching a video may be a passive experience and teachers need to customize the video in order to engage their students and teach more effectively. Edpuzzle is one of the free online tools that has turned out to be a game changer. It makes creating and editing educational videos easy and saves class time for higher level matters. Moreover, this tool is good for formative assessment and feedback. The advantage for students is that it allows them to work on the assignment at their own pace and, at the same time, it holds them accountable. Besides, the multiple attempts feature lets them improve their results. My class experience confirmed research results that Edpuzzle could be part of the teacher-training program.
