A Comparison of 20th Century Theories of Style (in the Context of Czech and British Scholarly Discourses)

Author(s): Michal Křístek / Language(s): English

The book is focused on a comparison of theoretical approaches to issues of style, in the context of Czech and Anglo-Saxon (especially British) scholarly discourses. The aim was to show and compare different methodological approaches based on different theoretical bases – for this reason, two different cultural contexts were selected, attention being paid also to mutual contacts within these contexts. The 20th century was chosen intentionally, as the period during which, in both of the respective contexts, stylistics was constituted as a modern scholarly discipline rooted in the fields of linguistics and literary theory. The book is aimed at members of academic communities, at teachers as well as at students, especially at those focusing on Czech and English studies.

Rozbor filmu

Author(s): Radomir D. Kokeš / Language(s): Czech

The aim is to offer a comprehensive textbook focused on formal analysis of stylistic, narrative, and thematic arrangement of a film work. The publication should be useful for students of film studies and audio-visual culture, as well as for wide audiences (academics, film reviewers, and film fans). The book structure follows a bottom-up explanation model which starts with searching for a research problem and the thesis formulation and goes on to questions related to the text outline and the structure of argumentation. The final part of the book offers more complex film case analyses rooted in the perspective of the previous chapters.

Srbská frazeologie v českém a bulharském překladu: Kontrastivní analýza

Author(s): Pavel Krejčí / Language(s): Czech

This book analyzes in contrastive way Czech and Bulgarian translations of phrasemes of two Serbian prose works: The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andrić (1945) and Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavić (1984). It tracks and describes the formal, semantic and stylistic variations of Czech and Bulgarian translation solutions while trying to answer the question, to what extent the greater typological linguistic proximity is playing bigger role at the accuracy of the translation of phraseology (Czech is thus closer to Serbian than Bulgarian) and to what extent the genetic and cultural-historical propinquity is more important (Bulgarian to Serbian is thus closer than Czech).

The Literary, Philosophical and Religious Dimensions of Allegory

The Literary, Philosophical and Religious Dimensions of Allegory

Author(s): Aurelian Botică / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This paper will analyze the concept of allegory as it was understood and used in classical and Hellenistic Greek literature. We will argue that Greek philosophers developed the technique of allegory partly as a reaction against the mythological worldview of Homer. As Greek thought evolved from a naturalistic expression into a more philosophical worldview, the Greek sophists felt increasely uncomfortable with the tales of violence and sexual immorality of the gods. Accordingly, the philosophers developed the method of allegorization both to save the Homeric myths from the devastating attacks of the critics and to impose the scientific worldview as a non-mythological endeavour. Since Greek culture was born out of the worldview of the Ilyad and the Oddysey some philosophers reinterpreted the myths allegorically. Hence they maintained cultural continuity with the past while allowing critical thought to reach its logical conclusions. They could honor the ancestral religion while criticizing the tales of the gods’ lying, violence and sexual immorality. The purpose of our study is to help the reader understand the origins and the power of allegory. To do so, we will analyze a number of classic texts and the way they were interpreted by contemporary scholarship. We believe that this interdisciplinary approach will help scholars from the field of literature understand better the philosophical and religious background of the birth and development of allegory.

Čeština Bedřicha Smetany: Analýza Smetanovy česky psané korespondence

Author(s): Lucie Rychnovská / Language(s): Czech

The monograph deals with the research of the composer Bedřich Smetana’s Czech. Smetana (1824–1884) lived in the period of time which is, in works on history of Czech language, referred to as revival or post-revival. From the linguistic perspective, this period is typical of replacement of German by Czech in the function of high communication variety and formation of modern standard language norm. The publication poses a question how contemporary speakers, who were educated but were not professionally involved in Czech language (as e. g. writers or journalists), mastered this norm. By the analysis of orthographical, grammatical and also complementarily of lexical aspects of Smetana’s correspondence, the monograph demonstrates how is Smetana’s expressing prototypical and in contrary extraordinary. The aim of the work is also to contribute to the knowledge of constitutive standard language of the second half of the 19th century.

Figure bjelina

Figure bjelina

Author(s): Nikola Košćak / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

Stylistics and rhetoric have always neglected stylogenic procedures associated with the writing level of the language message, procedures based on manipulating the spacing between the words remaining peripheral even in one of the most elaborate overviews of the figures of writing, that of the German rhetorician H. F. Plett, who displays a series of procedures the basis of which is playing of graphemes (or graphs), punctuation and spelling signs. The method of this research will be inspired by the research of Plett, who divides and defines the graphemic figures (as he calls the processes known as figures of writing) by the addition, subtraction, permutation, substitution and equivalence of individual elements of the writing. According to these operations, five subtypes of these figures will be identified and exemplified: the addition, subtraction, permutation, substitution and equivalence figures of spacing, depending on whether any conventional record is modified by adding, omission or displacement of spacing, by replacing spacing with any other means of writing, or about whether any equivalence of the methods of manipulating the spacing between the word within a record is shown. The corpus consists of examples from the Croatian advertising, journalistic and literary discourse, also including examples from other contexts, in order to address the omnipresence of these figures in contemporary culture.

Oblikovanje prostora u pripovijetkama Alije Isakovića

Author(s): Dijana Hadžizukić / Language(s): Bosnian Publication Year: 0

The paper analyzes selected short stories by Alija Isaković taking into account the ways of shaping space in narrative discourse. Isaković is known as an author whose poetics is modernistic, his narration, narrators and focalizers, as well as chronotopes are unfamiliarized. In terms of themes and motifs the focus of his narratives are characters belonging to the world of alienation and absurdity. Because of that, the spaces in which the plot takes place are much more symbolic spaces of anxiety rather than mimetic spaces known from the real world. Following this assumption, we will search for the role that space has and its textual shaping in the overall meaning of the narratives.

The Figurativeness of the Language of Mystical Experience: Particularities and Interpretations

The Figurativeness of the Language of Mystical Experience: Particularities and Interpretations

Author(s): / Language(s): English

The scientific and technical achievements of the last decades have enabled man to achieve an unquestionable life comfort. Paradoxically, however, they also stand behind his existential struggles, where the need to slow down the pace and restore one’s own emotional and cognitive resources, revive communication models based on immediate contact, be authentic, creative, stronger, and so on breaks through the surface. One way of looking for a personal way of life and its meaning is through a religious, more precisely, spiritual experience. We consider the mystical experience to be the modality of the spiritual expression or, more precisely, its autonomous part. We see it as a descent of man into his own interior, so called the centre, in which he acquires a pouring knowledge of the nature of God. Although it is an individual and spontaneous experience, it is characterized by some universal features: imagery as a means of conveying the inexpressible content and as an archetypal basis of spiritual tradition. The publication focuses on the literary-artistic forms of the mystical experience as well as the literary forms of mystagogy, that is the interpretation of the mystical experience of the mystic. Through individual analytical-interpretative contributions based on the works of the mystics of the Western Christian tradition, we will try to enter into a specific image of ineffability modelled (the language of mystical unification) and reflexively stimulated (the language of mystagogy) by mystical experience. This is a complex subject confirmed by its basic attribute (inexpressibility at the language level) and by its thought-initiated tensions (for example, interior vs. exterior, authentic vs. ritual, profane vs. sacred, natural vs. supernatural).

„JOBB, MINT AZ EREDETI”. „OLVASÓBARÁT” ANGOLSZÁSZ GYEREKIRODALOM?

Author(s): Andrea Papp / Language(s): Hungarian Publication Year: 0

These days, rewriting classical literary works is very popular. The slogan could be ‘classics with ease’, that is our great writers should be published in an abridged form so as to please the reader. This is characteristic not only of Hungarian but of world literature as well. In my essay, I write about the adaptations of Mark Twain’s two very popular novels (in Romania, as well) – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. First, I give the definition of rewriting, illustrating with some historical examples. After the short theoretical introduction, I introduce the different adaptations of the two works. As an illustration, I will show four different texts.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PHYSICS RESEARCH ARTICLE INTRODUCTIONS: NATIVE AND NON-NATIVE AUTHORS

Author(s): Dénes Neumayer / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This paper unfolds a research that compares the rhetorical structure of the introduction sections of English language physics articles written by Hungarians and natives speakers of English. The aim of this research was to find out about and to analyse the possible differences in the structures applied by NNSs and those used by NSs. The framework of the study was the CARS model devised by Swales (1990), which has proved its usability in numerous projects since its publication. Our results indicate several important differences between the articles, especially concerning the pattern of the rhetorical move structure and the realization of rhetorical moves.
