Функционална субституция на неафрикатен с африкатен обструент в устната практика на френския и българския език

Функционална субституция на неафрикатен с африкатен обструент в устната практика на френския и българския език

Author(s): Veska Kirilova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2020

The present study examines some cases of functional substitution of non-affricate with affricate obstruents in the oral practice of the French language, some of its diatopic and diastratic variations, as well as the manifestation of this process in the Bulgarian language. The study finds that the affrication concerns only the plosive obstruents ([t], [d], [k], [g]) in the French language, while the affrication in the Bulgarian language is observed both with plosive ([t], [d]) and fricative obstruents ([c], [з], [ш], [ж]). The terms ‚direct‘ and ‚indirect affrication‘ are introduced. The study analyzes the phonetic causes of the substitution process under consideration.

Izotopii generatoare de clișee jurnalistice în contextul pandemiei de Covid-19: „patologii la mod㔆 sau „cuvinte-oglindă” ale realității psihosociale?

Author(s): Armanda Ramona Stroia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 12/2020

The present paper examines the dominant isotopies under which linguistic clichés emerge in the context of the intense media coverage of the current COVID19 pandemic. The analysis of the linguistic automatisms excerpted from the online journalistic discourse proved to be prolific in identifying additional features of the linguistic “behaviour” of clichés. Furthermore, the investigation facilitated our understanding of the underlying motivations, implications, and potential effects triggered by the use of specific prefabricated structures. As a general remark, the analysis of these dominant overused schemes revealed how media institutions overuse, under the pressure of the international model, specific lexico-semantic isotopies which exploit prefabricated structures from distinct fields: war, particularly the area of pyrotechnic elements(“explosion of new cases”, “huge explosion of Covid cases”), the semantic area of natural disasters subsumed to liquidity (“a new wave of COVID”, “anti-Covid control wave”, “death wave”, “a wave of hateful comments”, “wave of infections/confirmations/illnesses”, “flood of accusations/fines”, “tsunami of COVID-19 patients/displacements”). We have also identified journalistic automatisms circumscribed to the isotopy of the economy(“epidemiological balance”), ranking and sports competition (statistical clichés: “top of infections”, “Covid top”, “top Covid infections”, “European top of Covid evolution”, “vaccine race”, among others), disaster (clichés of melodramatic excess, salient to tabloid journalism: “disaster”, “chaos”, “nightmare”, “COVID-19 drama”). For the present article, we channeled our investigative effort only towards the first two dominant isotopies. To achieve these objectives, we proposed a two-dimensional research model. Specifically, we correlated the data obtained through conjugating linguistic micro-parameters (semantic, stylistic features, lexical and morpho-syntactic patterns) and macrolevel variables (pragmatic, psycholinguistic aspects, perspectives derived from the sociology of media communication, critical analysis of discourse, among others). The investigation results revealed that these linguistic patterns, analyzed under the conceptual “umbrella” of isotopy, can function as rhetorical and lexicosemantic strategies through which journalists activate the receptors’ affective responses. Consequently, media discourse can trigger and maintain artificial states of anxiety, panic, and restlessness. Over time, this journalistic operation leads, through the impact of obsessive repetition, to the passive consumption of media representations and cultural stereotypes, of preconceived ideas.

Aspecte ale uitării (oblivio) în limba latină

Aspecte ale uitării (oblivio) în limba latină

Author(s): Theodor Georgescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2021

In the literature of Classical Antiquity, the oblivion theme appears from the first Homeric texts. Odysseus’ companions, who arrived in the land of the Lotus Eaters, forget their homeland and duties after eating the lotus offered by the natives. Only the energetic action of Odysseus saves them from the dangers of oblivion. In Latin, the notion of oblivion is expressed especially by the subst. oblivio, which, however, renders in Latin literature, in a single word, notions which in the Greek language were expressed by different terms. Oblivio, in the broadest sense, is the equivalent of gr. λήθη and the antonym of mindfulness (lat. memoria). It is mostly reprehensible, because it is a form of betrayal of the past. But it can sometimes be a form of salvation (Publil. Sent. I, 21 iniuriarum remedium est obliuio). But forgetting a thing can sometimes be only a momentary darkening of the mind, which in Greek was expressed by μετεωρία "distraction, confusion" or ἀβλεψία "blindness, inability to know". For doctors, even the state of sleepiness was also expressed by oblivio and rendering gr. ληθαργία. The voluntary erasure of unpleasant memories and the forgiveness of what happened was also a form of oblivio and is equivalent to gr. ἀμνηστία "oblivion", hence "forgiveness, pardon", and, in the field of law, "amnesty". It can be as well a form of conviction to be forgotten by posterity, indicating that a person is to be excluded from official accounts (damnatio memoriae "condemnation of memory"), practiced especially in the imperial period. The analysis of the contexts in which oblivio is attested in Latin authors shows different meanings that we can better understand by reference to the Greek language.

Jezična obilježja reklama u hrvatskom internetskom prostoru

Jezična obilježja reklama u hrvatskom internetskom prostoru

Author(s): Marica Čilaš Mikulić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2016

The advertising of products and services in the last hundred or so years has caused the gradual creation of specific advertising discourse, whose characteristics are, among other things, directiveness, superlativeness, lexical and syntactic repetition, figurativeness, intertextuality, etc. (Bagić 2006, Kovačević – Badurina 2001, Udier 2006, Stolac – Vlastelić 2014). Advertising discourse shows certain differences depending on the nature of the advertisements, whether they be printed advertisements (in newspapers, on billboards, in broadcast teletext) or spoken advertisements (on the radio). Television commercials combine the possibilities that are offered by visual and spoken media, thereby making multimediality its most prominent feature. Internet advertising arose in the 1990s. At that time, there was not a lot of advertising on Croatian websites, and the few advertisements that were found on these websites were modeled on English-language examples (Halonja – Kovačević 1999). This paper will analyze the linguistic (stylistic, semantic, lexical and syntactic) features of advertisements that appear on the Internet in the Croatian language in 2015, and they will be compared with the characteristics of advertising discourse in other media, as known from related literature.

Cтицање стилистичке компетенције на примеру административног струковног стила у настави српског као страног језика

Author(s): Lidija Čolević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2012

This paper discusses issues related to the confrontation of the administrative style of the Serbian and Romanian language and the formation of the legal terminology in order for students to understand its distinct stylistic mark so that to avoid the danger of its inappropriate use in other areas which might impact the culture of speech. Linguistic analysis for legal terms of the individual words, the norms of their lexical and syntactic connectivity in the example of the complaint, which served as an excellent methodical proposal, could show us how interesting it is from the perspective of translation and from the point of self-production of various documents with a personal character in the Serbian language, too.

Eingegrenzte Literatur

Eingegrenzte Literatur

Author(s): Ben Dittmann / Language(s): German Issue: 6/2022

The article examines the quite extraordinary phenomenon of literary texts, that limit themselves, like anagrams or palindromes. Limited texts are often reduced to their playful appearance, while they have a close relation to experimental practises as well. Experiments as well as limited literature construct their objects of research within a manipulated environment. This self-limiting literary expression is specified with Deleuze’ and Guattari’s concept of a “minor” literature, by pointing out the defamiliarization of the text production and the irritation of linguistic automatisms initiated by limitations. Strongly restricted literaturę allows due to its limitation only, the release of new linguistic possibilities and insights, which is further demonstrated with a concluding example.

Текстообразуване и структура на правната норма в английския и българския законодателен текст

Author(s): Diana Jankova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2005

The present study investigates particular types of legal qualifications, their textual patterns and structuring in legislative documents across two different legal systems - the codified Roman-law based legal system in Bulgaria and the common law and precedent based system in England. The hypothesis to be tested is that differences are reflected in the language used to conceptualize statutory provisions. The main aspects of the textual component of English and Bulgarian statutory texts, namely the (linguistic) structure and place of certain types of legal qualifications and their relatedness to preceding or following discourse will also be examined.

Author(s): Nataliya Victorovna Patroeva / Language(s): Russian Issue: 7/2022

The paper uses M. I. Pigin’s linguistic works to investigate the intermediate position of the syncretic constructions with the verb to be in the eighteenth-century poetic texts. The author analyzes the gradual loss of abstract copulas and existential verbs in different genres. The obtained data are compared with the materials of the eighteenth-century grammatical treatises and the twentieth-century works on the history of Russian syntax. Based on the texts from the Russian National Corpus, the archaic forms есмь (esm’), еси (esi) and есте (este) are studied and the frequency of their corresponding forms in poetic texts is analyzed. The analysis of the Baroque and Classicism poetic contexts, as well as the data of the The Syntactic Dictionary of Russian Poetry of the XVIII Century confirms the tendencies associated with the reduced usage of these forms. The author points to the actualization of linking verbs in the present tense in so-called “high” genres, the use of copulas for the purpose of folklore stylization, and a general tendency to reduce the number of the archaic connective forms in the Pushkin era.

Cross-textual reconceptualisation of the deictic space of “victory” in political discourse: Donald Trump versus Joseph Biden

Cross-textual reconceptualisation of the deictic space of “victory” in political discourse: Donald Trump versus Joseph Biden

Author(s): Amir H. Y. Salama / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The present study propounds the notion-complex of cross-textual reconceptualisation as a cognitive-linguistic output of applying Paul Chilton’s (2013, 2014, 2017) model of Deictic Space Theory (DST) to textual practices drawn from the broad domain of political discourse. The DST model has operated methodologically towards conducting a cognitively oriented political discourse analysis of the two victory speeches produced by Donald Trump and Joseph Biden during the 2020 election for US presidency. As a geometric model, DST has been applied to the two speeches in a way that demonstrated the deictic spatial construction of victory in relation to Trump and Biden as the now-here-real speakers on the three axes of discourse referents, time, and epistemic modality. The data analysis has revealed four significant instantiations of cross-textual reconceptualisation made by Biden of Trump’s deictic space of victory as a contested concept: (i) a “clear”and “convincing” victory, (ii) a peripersonal real victory, (iii) Trump and his voters, and (iv) a now shift from a past Democrat to a future President. All four instantiations have proved the hypothesis that the DST model, while revealing the deictic-spatial conceptualisations of “victory” constituted by each speaker in his speech, may further be extended to disentangle the interesting aspect of how one and the same concept could be reconceptualised across two textual practices produced by speakers with ideologically opposed perspectives.

HOW TO BUILD AN INTERNATIONAL VOLUME ON TRANSNISTRIAN ISSUE. LEARNED LESSONS

HOW TO BUILD AN INTERNATIONAL VOLUME ON TRANSNISTRIAN ISSUE. LEARNED LESSONS

Author(s): Eugen Străuţiu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

In the spring of 2021, the Laboratory for the Analysis of the Transnistrian Conflict (Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu) and the Balkan History Association based in Bucharest launched a call under the project ”The Armed Conflict on the Dniester: Political and Social Implications for the Republic of Moldova”. Under the coordination of a team made up of researchers from Romania, the Republic of Moldova, the United States of America, and Germany, the project retained the chapters proposed by eight Western researchers and one from Tiraspol The learned lessons refer, on the one hand, to the weak capacity of some researchers from the Republic of Moldova to work in teams with foreign researchers, using Western citation systems and respecting the standards of objectivity and quality. On the other hand, we notice the difficulties of a coordination team that has to manage partisanship, visible through the subjective selection of sources and the use of political language instead of political analysis.

JAZYKOVÝ OBRAZ ZDVORILOSTI V POVESTIACH PAVLA DOBŠINSKÉHO A ROZPRÁVKACH KARLA JAROMÍRA ERBENA

Author(s): Lucia Anna Trubačová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2021

The article The Linguistic Picture of Politeness in Dobšinský's legends and Erben's tales brings up the question how the meanings of the politeness concept and its context usages contribute to the broader Slovak and Czech linguistic picture of the world. To be able to answer this question we observed and interpreted various definitions of the concept we found in Slovak and Czech dictionaries and ethical manuals. With this theoretical base we have continued our observations of the concept within the literary field of legends and tales by Slovak romantic author Pavol Dobšinský and Czech romantic author Karel Jaromír Erben.

Role prefixoidů z klasických jazyků při obohacování slovní zasoby (nejen) češtiny na příkladu komponentů bio- a eko-

Author(s): Eliška Králová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 31/2022

The word-formation components originating in the classical languages are both malleable and effective device of marking new facts resulting from rapidly occuring changes on the global scale. What seems to be a decisive factor here, are considerable requirements of contemporary language systems towards newly coined words, that relate to those words’ functionality and internationality. The newly formed words need to mirror the transient realities of life and meet the communicative needs of speakers who live in the reality characterised by fast civilisation changes. Both the word-building formants originating in Latin and those originating in Greek fulfill those requirements. Latin and Greek prefixoids, in addition to being highly productive, may be easily combined with word-building components of native and foreign origin. On the one hand, it is an advantageous situation from the viewpoint of a given language users, while on the other, the said situation creates a risk of abusing and exhausting the meaning of some words, which brings about the need to eventually replace them with others. The speakers who gradually broaden their lexicons by including the newly-formed words may, in the course of this process, utilise their preexisting knowledge and thusfar experience that on the conceptual level correspond to the usage of word-formation components originating in Latin and Greek. The author of the article has combined her linguistic knowledge pertaining to how prefixes and prefixoids originating in Latin and Greek function in the Czech language, with the research findings of language didactics. At the same time, the author indicates particular case where the English language influences the Czech language.

Nevâdirü’l-Emsâl’deki Su Konulu Deyimlerde Metaforların İncelenmesi

Author(s): Lale YEŞİLOVA,A. Melek Özyetgin / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 21/2023

In this study, it is aimed to examine the idioms about water in Mîrek Muhammed Nakşîbendî-i Taşkendî’s dictionary of idioms Nevâdirü’l-Emsâl (NE) according to Lakoff Johnson's metaphor theory. NE is a rare dictionary of proverbs, idioms and other stereotyped phrases written in Persian Turkish. The work, which was written at the beginning of the 17th century, has been the source of many idiomatic lexicons after it. In this article, 6 waterrelated idioms, which are the head of the Persian item in NE are discussed. In line with their connotation areas and the meanings they have gained in Turkish, it will be questioned which target areas the source “water” concept points to, and which target areas have been reached from the “water” source area will be revealed through Persian Turkish language relations and words.

Prodor bosanskih leksičkih značajka u dubrovački govor 17. i 18. stoljeća

Prodor bosanskih leksičkih značajka u dubrovački govor 17. i 18. stoljeća

Author(s): Ivana Lovrić Jović / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2012

The work analyses the Bosnian lexemes in two bodies of texts: the 17th and 18th centuries Dubrovnik wills written in the Croatian language and the so-called francesaria – adaptations of comedies by Molière to Dubrovnik speech. As the studied period did not bring forth any major names in literature and, as a result, no comprehensive linguistic monographs, the mentioned linguistic material may be considered fairly representative of Dubrovnik speech in the 17th and 18th centuries. This is supported by the fact that these texts belong to different language genres: administrative language and stylized (dramatic) language. Although the Bosnian element left its mark on only certain portions of the mentioned two bodies, it should not be considered a sporadic or accidental phenomenon. Namely, in the testamental material the wills by Bosnian immigrants abound in Turkisms, whereas in the francesaria the Bosnian lexical element mostly occurs in the stylogenic function as a dramatic part of one of the standard characters – the Bosnian. This may lead to a wrong conclusion that the Bosnian element in Dubrovnik speech of the 17th and 18th centuries does not actually exist (except as part of the general Croatian lexica). Yet the fact that the translators, the autochthonous inhabitants of Dubrovnik, knew how to stylize the Bosnian’s speech with Turkisms tells best that they got to know them directly – probably through the living speech of the Herzegovian hinterland or through multiple trade links with Bosnia.

МОВА УКРАЇНСЬКИХ АПОКРИФІВ ЯК КУЛЬТУРНИЙ КОД

МОВА УКРАЇНСЬКИХ АПОКРИФІВ ЯК КУЛЬТУРНИЙ КОД

Author(s): Solomiia Pavlovska / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 2/2022

The purpose of the article is to reveal the communicative aspect of apocrypha recoding in the field of Ukrainian culture. The research methodology. According to the research strategy, a set of general scientific methods and methods of linguistic cultural studies have been used in the work. The conceptual methodological core of the study is the dialogical method, through which the connection of the apocryphal code with the code of a particular culture is analysed; the process of reinterpretation of Ukrainian apocryphal literature is investigated in the chronotope. Scientific novelty. For the first time it was scientifically proved that the Ukrainian Apocrypha is an open system oriented to the dialogue of cultures with different codes, one of the forms of coding, which allows to identify a particular cultural slice, intertext, which integrates an invariant complex of texts based on church dogmas, as well as a variant text complex, determined by the conditions of social life in a particular time period. Conclusions. The reserach is devoted to the communicative aspect of the language of the Ukrainian Apocrypha as a cultural code. The hypothesis of the Apocrypha as an intertext has been put forward and verified. The algorithm of Ukrainian apocrypha encoding dynamics in the chronotope has been traced. The concept of the East-West dichotomy in the linguistic modeling and storylines of Ukrainian apocrypha has been developed and the factors of this dichotomy have been determined.

Style współczesnego reportażu wojennego: Wojciech Tochman i Wojciech Jagielski

Style współczesnego reportażu wojennego: Wojciech Tochman i Wojciech Jagielski

Author(s): Ewa Sławek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

The article formulates a thesis that two eminent Polish writers covering war situations represent two different literary styles (idiostyles): Tochman's can be subsumed under the term „minimalist-rhetorical", whereas Jagielski's could be described as „metaphorical". To prove this thesis, the article makes use of linguistic analytical tools to interpret such works as Tochman's „Like eating stone. Surviving the Past in Bosnia", „The Crowing of Cocks and the Weeping of Dogs" and Jagielski's „Praying for Rain", „Towers of Stone. The Battle of Wills in Chechnya". Tochman's minimalism results from a creative treatment of syntax, the use of most basic syntactic constructions and verbless sentences as well as straight-forward announcement of facts. On the other hand, Jagielski's effort focuses on semantics, hence the abundance of metaphors, comparisons, and epithets.
