Syntaktické konstrukce typu Včely se hemží na zahradě – Zahrada se hemží včelami

In this paper, we focus on the relation between Czech syntactic constructions Bees are swarming in the garden – The garden is swarming with bees. We refer to this relation as a lexical-semantic conversion. This lexical-semantic conversion is associated with changes in the correspondence between two situational participants – Bearer of action and Location – and valency complementations. These changes result in a permutation of these participants which affects the prominent surface syntactic position of subject. We demonstrate that whereas the first syntactic variant refers to a simple action, the latter expresses rather a state arising from this simple action. In the latter case, the participant Location is usually holistically interpreted. We assume that the holistic effect of this participant follows from the fact that a state is generally attributed to each participant expressed in the subject position as a whole. Furthermore, syntactic variants with formal subject to and subjectless constructions (usually conceived as formal paraphrases of the pairs of the observed constructions) are discussed. Finally, a lexicographic representation of these syntactic structures is presented.

A. H. Tammsaare’s Epic Musicality

A. H. Tammsaare was drawn to the musical tonality of prose. Importantly though, he did not wholeheartedly embrace sound patterning as a mode of writing. Rather, he preferred a semantic widening of ordinary language within a comprehensively holistic “spherical music”. In his novels, we can detect a deliberate use of rhythmic motion in sentences. This is evident primarily in the wealth of lexical and syntactic repetitions resulting in a parallelism of patterns. An obvious, although discreet, rhythmic design emerges in the thesis-antithesis-synthesis parataxis the core words of which are the adversative and coordinating conjunctions aga (‘but’), and integrative ometi (‘yet’, ‘indeed’). The frequency with which these bound conjunctions occur in Tammsaare’s work surpasses that of ordinary speech by about four times, and it is twice as high as the statistical mean for literary texts. One might call this expressive of an epic but-mantra, a prose-poetic but-meter, or a narrative polysyndeton, and, from a philosophical point of view, a but-dialectic. Whenever a reader fails to appreciate Tammsaare’s underlying tone and does not discern the emotional flow of longing scepticism that issues from his dyadic-triadic chains, this pervasive, yet inconspicuously arguing, textual mode may seem unduly pretentious. Indeed, there is nothing to prevent a prose text from featuring a poetic style that is rooted in a poetry-like, paradigmatic parallelism as the poetic principle of formal and semantic equivalence.

Alcune note su un continuum paremiologico e fraseologico romanzo

The frequent comparison between Italian proverbs and set phrases and their correlated units in other national neo-Latin languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French and Romanian) can only evince the existence of a paremiological and phraseological Romance continuum, about whose axes of variation we would like to make some short remarks. Unfortunately, as traditional communities have almost disappeared all over the world, the paremiological treasure of each language is in constant decline. The first part of the paper considers the main formal and semantic structures shared by proverbs and idioms in all five languages which allow us to speak about a Pan-Romance continuum, with some possible “holes” in the Romance proverbs net. One may notice that he realia of Mediterranean lands are certainly very different from those reflected in the isolated Romanian language, and consequently, due to the shared social, Catholic, and geographical context, the proverbs of Western Romània are much more compact and similar, as they have been constantly strengthened by centuries of cultural and linguistic bonds. As far as their clear or obscure messages are concerned, the range spreads from a perfect semantic and formal match (as in pro memoria proverbs) up to a very high level of idiomaticity and therefore of untranslatability. There are at least two major categories of causes which brought to perfect similarity in all Romance languages: borrowed elements and internal evolution (due to the Latin heritage, due to the text of the Holy Scriptures or due to a plausible parallel development). The last part of the paper will point out the elements that do not overlap in this contrastive analysis (equivalent set phrases based on divergent types of metaphors, or diachronically, diatopically, diastratically and diaphasically marked proverbs and sayings of Romània).

The paper presents an overview of the figures which are based on graphic blending, ie. graphic blends. The overview is partly based on the rhetoric of Heinrich F. Plett, particularly on his use of general operations which divide the field of figures (addition, subtraction, permutation, substitution and equivalence) and his understanding of graphemic figures. Graphic blends are illustrated by examples from different discourse types and genres – from journalistic and advertising discourse to logos etc. The described research area falls within the field of graphostylistics, stylistic discipline that focuses on stylogenetic and figurative aspects of writing in language messages.

The Bulgarian life style magazines, as part of the new Bulgarian publicism, are characterized by some specific features such as: ‐ aspiration for democratization by using slang, vulgarisms, neologisms etc., ‐ colloquialism; ‐ large invasion of words of foreign origin; ‐ blurring the boundaries between literary language and colloquial speech. These tendencies have been adopted by the advertising discourse for the purposes of the advertising communication. The paper analyzes the colloquial markers in fashion advertisement. Object of observation are the advertising texts, published in the Bulgarian issue of GLAMOUR magazine from January to August 2014. The colloquial markers are studied on different linguistic levels: phonetic, lexical, syntactical and stylistic.

K výskumu hovorovej slovenčiny na Dolnej zemi

The paper presents partial results of a questionnaire survey that intends to find out how Slovaks who live in the so-called Low Land (Dolná zem; in Hungary, Serbia and Romania) understand some spoken (colloquial) words, collocations and phrases that contain spoken vocabulary. These are elements of spoken stylistic layer of standard language, which have a significant frequency in everyday language interaction in family, among friends and in a work environment. From the field of informal communication, spoken vocabulary is entering the domain of official communication, in particular the realm of print and electronic media. Analysed were 98 questionnaires collected between February and August 2014.

The paper examines three dominant models of communication of the previous century – semiotic, inferential and cognitive-inferential model. By presenting and discussing some renowned studies of these models, we trace a certain scientific revolution whereby the dominant beliefs were replaced by a new paradigm. First, we provide a description of Saussure’s achievements within the structuralist approach. Then, we offer a portrayal of the theories that emerged as a reaction to the given model - Grice’s view of communication and the cognitive- inferential relevance theory. Grice introduced a dichotomy of what is said and what is implicated in order to separate the semantic and pragmatic aspects of an utter- ance. Taking into account Grice’s approach, but significantly departing from it, the leading cognitive pragmatists introduced the explicature/implicature distinction, stating that the boundary between the semantic and pragmatic part of an utter- ance is not clear-cut and that the explicit level of communication can also include unarticulated constituents.

In this paper we submit to analysis the system of accents in the Serbian language from a theoretical and a practical perspective. This could be regarded as a teaching method aiming at the 1st year students who study Serbian as a foreign language, by also taking into consideration the maternal language of the students. The theoretical part comprises explanations referring to the pronunciation of the stressed vowels in terms of the falling and rising intonation, the length and shortness of the tone. This part encompasses also a classification and an analysis of the prosodic units in the spoken language, while the methodical application provides explanations on the writing, pronunciation and position of certain accents within words by means of tables, charts regarding sound articulation and charts of tone movement within words in certain constructions.

Humor is equally important both for Gogol’s life and his literary creation. Nonetheless, the writer vehemently rejected that sort of humor which served only for fun and amusement. He wanted laughter to offer more than it usually did; he wanted it to unmask the general evil within society. Starting with Gogol, the role and mission of laughter would be assigned new meanings; they would serve the noble purpose of rendering dignity to man, by revealing his moral faults. Gogol was an expert in depicting man’s characteristic features, as well as in scrutinizing the inner universe of his heroes. His artistic vision was always directed towards what was actually hiding behind the comic layer. The result was that each of his stories, which abound in comic elements, is always hiding something else. The comic character is a type, while the object of the comedy resides in the presentation of characters, that is to say of general types. Humour and satire define the way in which characters are outlined; stylistically, the two elements emphasize narration, determining its specific tone and vividness of style.

Notre étude représente une description des modalités de constitution des unités grammaticales de deux langues, qui se différencient du point de vue typologique : le russe, une langue slave, et le roumain, une langue romane. Cet étude présente, d’une manière contrastive, les variantes distributionnelles et, bien sûr, les implications d’ordres syntaxique, stylistique, sémantique et communicatif, générées par l’ordre des mots. Les méthodes descriptive et comparative sont appliquées aux unités grammaticales du type syntagme et du type énoncé, notre objectif visant l’étude et la mise en évidence des aspects d’ordre grammatical, liés à l’ordre des mots en roumain et en russe. L’ordre des mots est un phénomène complexe qui nécessite une interprétation des faits de langue de plusieurs perspectives : nous avons affaire à un rapport d’interdépendance entre l’ordre des mots et l’aspect communicatif d’un énoncé ; nous constatons une certaine organisation distributionnelle des termes, dans l’énoncé qui peut déterminer la fonction syntaxique ; l’ordre des mots peut être déterminée par une motivation d’ordre stylistique.

W dniach 28 marca – 1 kwietnia 2022 roku Oddział Bydgoski Towarzystwa Miłośników Języka Polskiego, Stowarzyszenie Etyki Słowa oraz Wydział Językoznawstwa Uniwersytetu Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy zorganizowały III Tydzień Języka Ojczystego (dalej: III TJO). Wydarzenie odbyło się pod honorowym patronatem: Jego Magnificencji Rektora UKW Jacka Woźnego, dziekan Wydziału Językoznawstwa UKW Magdaleny Czachorowskiej oraz Zarządu Głównego Towarzystwa Miłośników Języka Polskiego w Krakowie. Po trzyletniej przerwie (2019) spowodowanej pandemią koronawirusa udało się po raz kolejny przygotować cykl niezwykle interesujących odczytów i warsztatów (pisarskich, ortograficznych, a także z zakresu: historii języka polskiego, emisji głosu oraz grzeczności językowej).

Тhe complexity of messages, their readability or understandability and the subjective feeling for aesthetic value have interesting interrelations. In our research we claim that in natural languages, perceived as a multimodal complex whole, in formal languages, and in mathematics as a metalanguage, messages in individual modalities that convey maximum information with minimum complexity are more difficult to perceive (less readable), but are aesthetically more attractive; while if the message is multimodal, it is both more readable and more beautiful.

A review of Miłosz Babecki’s monograph Metaforyka polskich gier przeglądarkowych. Konteksty – porównania – analizy (Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Warmińsko-Mazurskiego w Olsztynie, Olsztyn 2020, pp. 340) contains some positive remarks concerning theoretical foundations of the work as well as its interesting interpretations. The reviewer points out that the author of the monograph could have devoted more space to network features relevant for the functioning of browser games. The review is concluded with a positive assessment of the monograph.
