Summary/Abstract: In this paper we submit to analysis the system of accents in the Serbian language from a theoretical and a practical perspective. This could be regarded as a teaching method aiming at the 1st year students who study Serbian as a foreign language, by also taking into consideration the maternal language of the students. The theoretical part comprises explanations referring to the pronunciation of the stressed vowels in terms of the falling and rising intonation, the length and shortness of the tone. This part encompasses also a classification and an analysis of the prosodic units in the spoken language, while the methodical application provides explanations on the writing, pronunciation and position of certain accents within words by means of tables, charts regarding sound articulation and charts of tone movement within words in certain constructions.
