Author(s): Mehmet KILIÇARSLAN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2016

When the Qur'an began to reveal to Muhammad by given prophetic mission, Mecca aristocrats did not respond to his invitation for the reasons such as fear of losing their social status, established authority over society members, and their income through idols in the Kaaba. Mecca aristocrats accused him of being crazy, poet, magician, and affected with sorcery. They claimed that God didn’t reveal anything to him but he fabricated the Qur'an out of spite or someone had taught to him, however, these accusations did not satisfyt hemselves. Muhammad was showing no signs of madness. Besides, they did not witness that he lied to them during the 40 years that they lived together. Moreover, the Qur'an was not like any literary genres known as poetry or prose. As the prominent leaders of the polytheists, Walid ibn al-Mughirah, Lebîd, Ashaa, Ka’b bin az-Zuheyr who is an expert in Arabic literature, also confessed that the Qur'an was not like any other literary genres known as poetry or prose. Even though Arab linguists were challenged to produce alike of the Qur'an, they didn’t even bring an equivalent chapter of it. Qur’an left them helpless with regard to structure, coherence (the harmony between the verses and chapters), information of the unseen, providing accurate information and so on.One of Quran’s brevities is its uniqueness in the aspect the narrative style. This article examines the narrative style of the Qur'an and it presents different aspects. Compliance of the word and its meaning in the sentences, addressee and location suitability, characteristics of appealing and satisfying all people (scholar-illiterate, city dwellers-peasants, men and women) at the same time, ability of observing intelligence and feelings together, and capability to use both elaborate and self-expression depends on situation will be illustrated by examples.

RAZGOVORNI FUNKCIONALNI STIL NA FORUMIMA

RAZGOVORNI FUNKCIONALNI STIL NA FORUMIMA

Author(s): Alica Arnaut / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: XVIII/2020

The aim of this paper is to investigate the linguistic means of shaping conversational functional style on Internet forums. For linguistics the means by which communication takes place on the Internet, as a potential source of language complex are extremely interesting and research will provide new knowledge about language and conversational style. Formal determinants of conversational style will be presented at different levels (phonostylistic, morphostylistic, lexicostylistic, syntaxostylistic and textual) with citations of specific examples. Since one type of global communication is enabled by the Internet, it will also be explored how communication by Internet forums affects language expressions.

SEMANTIČKI TIPOVI NEKONGRUENTNOG ATRIBUTA U ADMINISTRATIVNOM FUNKCIONALNOM STILU

Author(s): Esmeralda Mustafić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: XVIII/2020

The incongruent attribute has become an interesting topic for research given the multitude of meanings it can take on in that function. This paper will try to present the semantic types of incongruent attribute in the administrative functional style. Given the fact that administrative functional style is specific in the choice of linguistic means and given its great schematization, it is expected that the research results will contribute to a better understanding of administrative functional style and significant differentiation of incongruent attributes in it. This research primarily refers to the research of the frequency of occurrence of certain semantic types of incongruent attributes in the administrative functional style, in order to finally get a clearer picture of the frequency of these same types in use in modern language. The corpus of research is different issues of the Službene novine of ZDK.

O redu dijelova iskaza iz ugla teorije relevantnosti (na primjerima iz djela Huseina Bašića)

Author(s): Ismail Palić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 16/2018

The goal of this paper is to show the ways in which the inversion of the parts of speech (i.e. placing the 'rhema' in front of the 'theme') could be given a pragmatic interpretation rather than an exhaustive pragmatic analysis of all examples from the source. The starting assumption is that the inversion (in the sense how I define it) in the novel Tuđe gnijezdo by Husein Bašić is a very frequent intentional pragmatic act which could be quite appropriately explained (even) in the framework of the Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory. These explanations and conclusions concerning them are applicable not only in case of this selected novel by Bašić, but I believe that their applicability is much wider

Skrypty nauk ścisłych w kontekście badań nad metajęzykiem

Skrypty nauk ścisłych w kontekście badań nad metajęzykiem

Author(s): Ida Skubis / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

Ability to write Natural Science textbooks in a clear and interesting manner is a very demanding task, but the use of numerous metatextemes can help the authors to achieve it. With the application of metatextemes they can create a recipient-friendly article. These constructions have various functions, but the scientists often forget about them and concentrate mostly on showing the results of their analysis. Metatextemes help the authors e.g. to organise and present their line of thoughts, and to inform the recipient about the steps undertaken by the author and their attitude to the information they present. With the use of these metaoperators the researchers can highlight the most important information in the text and refer to research of other scientists and most of all, they help to establish a relationship with the reader. These measures have many different functions, and in this article we present their role in academic books on Natural Sciences with their characteristics and examples. The authors of scientific texts should pay more attention to the language and constructions they use in their texts, because in this way they influence the reader and their impressions and also their attitude towards data presented in the text and to their author.

Genologiczne aspekty współczesnych dedykacji drukowanych (na przykładzie formuł dedykacyjnych w powieściach popularnych Remigiusza Mroza)

Genologiczne aspekty współczesnych dedykacji drukowanych (na przykładzie formuł dedykacyjnych w powieściach popularnych Remigiusza Mroza)

Author(s): Beata Jędrzejczak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 19/2020

This article offers a genologic analysis of the printed dedicational texts contained in the popular novels by Remigiusz Mróz. Considering the main aspects, i.e. structural, linguistic-stylistic, and pragmatic, of this genre makes it possible to identify both the conventional elements, that refer to the genre tradition, and the unconventional ones. The purpose of the investigation is therefore to observe concrete textual realizations, and in consequence, by way of generalization, to specify certain genre features of the contemporary printed dedication and draw conclusions concerning the genologic status of the discussed forms of communication. It turns out that most of the genre modifications in the contemporary printed dedication are determined by the changes in the pragmatic aspect of the genre. The analysis of the dedicational texts leads to two main conclusions. First, the dynamics of communication processes and the variability of social and cultural language behaviours changed the communicative purpose of dedication. The communicative intent is not so much the very act of offering the addressee the literary work and the desire to endear oneself to them by it, as creating an image of the sender of the message and the desire to gain sympathy of the witness of this act of offering, the reader. Second, printed dedications published in the contemporary popular novels are realizations of an alternating genre pattern.

Цветовой континуум повести К.Г. Паустовского «Золотая роза»

Цветовой континуум повести К.Г. Паустовского «Золотая роза»

Author(s): Tatyana Viktorovna Sivova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2020

A fragment of K.G. Paustovsky’s coloristic world view was reconstructed, which is of certain interest due to the importance of color in his works and in the light of anthropocentrism that prevails in modern linguistics. It was revealed that the color space of the story “The Golden Rose” (‘Zolotaya roza’), within the field model with zones based on both quantitative and qualitative features, is characterized by numerous color terms (for example, the field core includes 40 color terms). The color dominants of the story (black, white, yellow, and green) demonstrate the specificity of K.G. Paustovsky’s style with regard to color perception, as well as the primacy of national coloristic pattern over the individual one. The zonation of color terms shows K.G. Paustovsky’s space visualization, in which the transition occurs from the information component to the figurative one, as well as from color to light. The interrelation of color-light and space-time characteristics creates a unique color chronotope of the story “The Golden Rose”. Therefore, the identified features of K.G. Paustovsky’s color perception cast light upon his idiostyle. The results of the analysis confirm that the coloristic component played a key role in his linguistic world view.

ПОЕЗИЈА И ПОЕТИКА ЈОВАНА СУНДЕЧИЋА

Author(s): Duško V. Pevulja / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2021

The paper offers insight into the poetic stance of the unjustifiably marginalized poet Jovan Sundečić and it analyzes the dominant artistic features of his vast poetic opus. The presentation of Sundečić’s poetics took into consideration his poems that talk of poetic creation as well as the texts on this topic. Sundečić’s poetic opus is analyzed with respect to the dominant complexes of the thematic and motive axes, linguistic particularities, artistically recognizable elements and frequent changes that his creative opus went through during several decades. A special focus in this paper put on Sundečić’s study on Božidar Petranović, which occupies a prominent place in the opus of this priest, diplomat and poet. At the same time, the paper indicates various forms of reception of Sundečić’s diverse work and mentions possible causes for the neglect of his opus in Serbian literary history.

ЛЕКСИЧКА КРЕАТИВНОСТ КАО OБЕЛЕЖЈЕ СТИЛА У РОМАНУ ПА КАО ВЛАДИМИРА ТАБАШЕВИЋА

Author(s): Jasmina Dražić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2021

This paper deals with wordplay as a marker of style in the novel Pa kao [i.e. Well, as if / Inferno] by Vladimir Tabašević (2016). The main aim of the paper is to identify creative mechanisms in the formation of new lexical units, monomorphemic and polymorphemic, as well as their pragmatic, stylistic and aesthetic functions. Building on the most prominent views on lexical creativity and productivity, a theoretical framework for this research is put forward, followed by a form- and content-based classification of patterns as observed in the corpus containing 95 samples of his lexical creations in the novel Pa kao by V. Tabašević. Also discussed is the function of humour through wordplay in this functional style, which achieves the effects of irony, contrast and absurdity. Finally, mention is made of challenges to future translators of this novel into foreign languages and their cultures, specifically in conveying new words denoting new concepts through new names for old or new entities.

Univerzalnost, relativizam i literarnost u fokusu translacione stilistike

Author(s): Amina Arnautović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 20/2016

It is possible to recognize the key concepts of universality, relativity and literariness at the root of nearly all the stylistic issues that recent translation theory has been concerned with. This is because they relate intimately to the question of translatability. The aim of this article is to highlight and enhance the significance of these concepts, as well as the need for their further and more precise definition, which would contribute to further improvement and unification of translation theory and practice.

Wann wird Schweigen zum Sprechakt? Illokutionen im Grenzbereich sprachlichen Handelns

Author(s): Urszula Topczewska / Language(s): German Issue: 5/2021

The aim of this paper is to show that silence in a conversation can be an indirect speech act in Searle’s sense of the concept. The manifold semiotic functions of silence that will be presented in the paper suggest that it is an independent segment in a series of utterances, and thus constitutes a speech act separate from the preceding and following verbal acts. Its interpretation depends on conventions, but these conventions rarely evoke only symbolic procedures in contrast to direct speech acts. In most cases, pauses in speech also initiate a symptomatic interpretation procedure as defined by Rudi Keller, leading to indirect conclusions about the communicative intentions of the speakers.

Seizmografski zapis stvarnosti: pripovedne strategije En Biti

Author(s): Vladislava Gordić Petković / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/1996

Although considered one of the finest voices of American minimalism, Ann Beattie has not met the adequate critical response yet. Her novels and short stories are mostly concerned with lives of inconspicuous women who struggle hard against their inhibition to express the deepest and finest emotions. The heroines of Ann Beattie are somehow doomed to be passive observers of other people’s lives, mostly because they cannot deal properly with their own emotional problems. In analysis of stories Where You 'll Find Me and The Second Question we witness the anxieties and indifferences of main characters, caused by their marginality and invisibility in the life of the male protagonists. However, a closer look into the minds of Ann Beattie’s women reveal rich imagination and refined sensibility which react even to the slightest moves on the stage of human life.

TÜMELLER VE ÖZELLİKLER ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİNİN REALİZM VE TROP KURAMLARI AÇISINDAN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

Author(s): Faruk Yorgun / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 21/2021

On what grounds do we say the proposition “Snow is white” is true or how do we know that snow is white? There are different approaches to answer and explain why snow is white from different perspectives. For instance, according to realist theories there is a whiteness universal to explain why snow is white. However, this claim is unacceptable for tropes theories, and to them, there is not such a universal as whiteness. According to tropes theories, the answer of how we know snow is white is that there is the property of being white and by means of this property, we know the reason why snow is white. The relation between universals and properties is also problematic. While in most realistic theories, the universal and property are accepted to be the same, the existence of universals and properties is not accepted in nominalist theories. On the other hand, even though tropes theories deny universals, they accept the existence of properties. In this study, the relation between universals and properties will be evaluated in realist and tropes theories. As a result of this analysis, the reason why tropes theories are more successful approach than other theories concerning our knowledge of objects will be expounded.

A Szigeti veszedelem jelzőrendszere

Author(s): Ilona Rajsli / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 3/2016

Attributives are among the most prominent stylistic devices in Zrinyi’s epic poem, The Siege of Sziget. In our paper we study constructions with attributes of qualification from the aspect of grammatical category and structure. Regarding grammatical category – next to adjectival attributes – attributive nouns are extremely powerful and of condensing nature, while participles as attributes have special stylistic effect; all three types are found in the corpus. Structurally there are three types of attributives: simple (containing one attribute), multiple and cumulative attributives. In the latter type the attributes in the structure can be co-ordinate, and in this case they semantically strengthen each other, or the sequence of attributes entwine and thus have the character of gradation. There are a number of attributes which function as a decorative element or are there for the sake of prose rhythm or rhyming, and they are often recurrent; they function as kind of permanent attributives, creating thus the typical “Zrinyi-attributes”. Synesthetic or metaphoric attributives also give a special atmosphere to this epic poem. Next to the stylistic function of the attributives semasiological aspects were also considered alongside the contextual issues of pictorialness, metaphoricalness and attributes, for example, attributive constructions built into similes.

İNFOGRAFİKLER: BİLGİNİN GRAFİKLERLE ETKİLEŞİMİNDE KULLANILAN BENZETMELER

Author(s): Şerafettin Dedeoğlu,Mehmet Nuhoğlu / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 80/2021

The democratic reproduction of knowledge and its interaction with more people is based on the use of paper after writing and the invention of printing techniques. Fitting information from tablets to manuscripts, printed books and mobile media as a space has caused a significant memory squeeze. The contributions of science, art and design have been used in order to explain the great memory formed in the adventure of history and to filter the information needed from this pile. In order to explain information clearly, it has created the need to create information visualization techniques that can be considered the ancestor of most diagrams and similar graphics today. With a multi-layered design approach, infographics are graphic fictions that allow the audience to make inferences with visualizations of the story to be told. The reason for the use of infographics is related to the need to make large masses of information easily understood and to manage information. In the transfer of the story structure of the information, "analogy" methods were used while applying the infographics. In the article, concepts such as analogy, allegory and metaphor, which have different methods of analogy, will be examined through examples, and the interaction of information and simulation methods will be analyzed through graphics.

Freedom at the Tip of the Pedal: A Metaphor Study

Author(s): Senem Çeyiz,Velittin Balci / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The aim of this study was to reveal the perceptions of bicyclests’ about bicycle and cycling through metaphors. It is thought that the findings obtained for the purpose of the research will contribute to the studies to be made in order to spread the use of bicycles in the society. For this purpose, the phenomenology model, one of the qualitative research approaches, was used in the research. 76 bicyclists selected by the purposive sampling method were included in the study. In the data collection phase, a personal information form and a form composed of semi-structured sentences created by the researchers were used. In the analysis of the data; content analysis method was used. During the analysis of the data, the metaphors created by the participants regarding the concepts of "Bicycle" and "Cycling" were listed and categorized. The categories created from the metaphors obtained within the scope of the research indicate that cycling is an activity that reflects the difficulties and beauties of life, makes feeling free and happy, contributes to physical and mental development, and has risks from infrastructure deficiencies. In addition, it is seen that participants identify bicycle with happiness and develop emotional commitment with their bicycles.

The use of impoliteness for the construction of interpersonal relationships: the case of the “almighty” House M.D.

The use of impoliteness for the construction of interpersonal relationships: the case of the “almighty” House M.D.

Author(s): Eduard Drančák / Language(s): English Issue: 45-46/2021

The present research paper describes the workings of impoliteness exemplified in film discourse, namely in the TV series called House M.D. The focus is placed on locating the source of impoliteness in the linguistic behavior of the main character in the series, the infamous Dr. House, as well as on pinpointing the impact of impoliteness on his interpersonal relationships. Qualitative analysis is performed on two transcripts of conversations of Dr. House with various types of people he encounters at his workplace. The source of impoliteness is located by applying the concepts of Spencer-Oatey’s (2008) rapport management framework. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the use of impoliteness for the construction of interpersonal relationships. The study thus operates within the paradigm of interpersonal pragmatics. The paper shows that Dr. House purposefully deploys impoliteness to establish himself in a superior position in terms of power at his workplace in the interpersonal relationships in which he is by default in an institutionally subordinate position. The analysis demonstrates House’s use of impoliteness not only to construct his professional relationships, but also as an attempt to construct a personal relationship.
