Summary/Abstract: Although considered one of the finest voices of American minimalism, Ann Beattie has not met the adequate critical response yet. Her novels and short stories are mostly concerned with lives of inconspicuous women who struggle hard against their inhibition to express the deepest and finest emotions. The heroines of Ann Beattie are somehow doomed to be passive observers of other people’s lives, mostly because they cannot deal properly with their own emotional problems. In analysis of stories Where You 'll Find Me and The Second Question we witness the anxieties and indifferences of main characters, caused by their marginality and invisibility in the life of the male protagonists. However, a closer look into the minds of Ann Beattie’s women reveal rich imagination and refined sensibility which react even to the slightest moves on the stage of human life.
