Summary/Abstract: It is possible to recognize the key concepts of universality, relativity and literariness at the root of nearly all the stylistic issues that recent translation theory has been concerned with. This is because they relate intimately to the question of translatability. The aim of this article is to highlight and enhance the significance of these concepts, as well as the need for their further and more precise definition, which would contribute to further improvement and unification of translation theory and practice.
