O NEKIM MODALNIM ZNAČENJIMA FORME - MIŞ U FINITNIM GLAGOLSKIM OBLICIMA U SA VREMENOM TURSKOM JEZIKU (U POREĐENJU SA BOSANSKIM JEZIKOM)

O NEKIM MODALNIM ZNAČENJIMA FORME - MIŞ U FINITNIM GLAGOLSKIM OBLICIMA U SA VREMENOM TURSKOM JEZIKU (U POREĐENJU SA BOSANSKIM JEZIKOM)

Author(s): Kerima Filan / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 42-43/1995

In this paper the examples, phrases or suprasentential units have been analyzed, whose objects contain verbal form -miş as translated from our language into Turkish. Our aim has been, by comparing the Turkish translations with their originals in our language, to find out what makes the translator chose this form of object(s), considering the fact that apart from temporal meaning (which even in some circumstances need not be included) this form also implies certain modal meanings, while in our language modal meanings cannot be expressed by the verb tense itself. The starting point for us in this analysis has been a different position of the narrator who organizes narration in the corpus of texts we have used. It has been shown that, in order to find the equivalent phrase in the target language- by the equivalent phrase we certainly understand the equivalent verb tense by which its object is expressed-besides the meaning of the verb in a phrase being translated, the meaning (or meanings) of the phrase itself must be taken into consideration, i.e.the meaning of the suprasentential unit, within a broader context, and even within the whole text.

Slavic languages in contact, 8: Turkish -ı- > Serbian, Croatian -r-

Author(s): Marek Stachowski / Language(s): English Issue: 31/2020

Even though there is no sonantic r̥ in Turkish, some Croatian and Serbian reflexes of Turkish loanwords display an r̥ . Such examples form two typologically different groups. One of them can be explained by a purely Slavic phonological proportion. The other group, however, can only be characterised in terms of Turkish phonetics, but its full explanation escapes our analyses.

TURSKO-SRPSKOHRVATSKI RJEČNIK NEPOZNATOG AUTORA IZ XVII STOLJEĆA

Author(s): Derviš M. Korkut / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 16-17/1970

TURCIZMI U PRIPOVIJESTIMA NIKE H. P. BESAROVIĆA

Author(s): Alija Nametak / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 16-17/1970

Author(s): Edina Solak,Mirza Bašić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 15/2021

The primary goal is to analyze the pragmatic value of lexemes marking names of animals and plants in Orhan Pamuk’s novel Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık. Besides, contrastive analysis was used to answer the question of whether lexemes marking names of animals and plants can have an identical pragmatic illocution in Turkish and Bosnian language. The initial language of the analysis is Turkish, which implies the fact that pragmatic functions of lexemes marking names of animals and plants in the Turkish language are compared to the translational equivalents in Bosnian. This is used to try to determine similarities and differences between the pragmatic values of names of animals and plants in two genetically and typologically different languages.

Полисемия в списках самодийской базисной лексики и языковые контакты

Author(s): Idaliya V. Fedotova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 02 (37)/2020

This paper investigates cases of semantic shifts and proto-language polysemy in the Samoyed core lexicon. This research focuses on the shifts which have analogies in Turkic and Tungusic languages, identified with the help of semantic reconstruction. Special maps were created at LingvoDoc linguistic platform in order to demonstrate areas of similar polysemy and semantic shifts, possibly contact-induced. Using materials from archival and expeditionary dictionaries, the paper proposes a detailed account of the available lexicon of the Samoyed languages within the scope of core lexicon. Our results show 15 semantic shifts in the form of polysemy, semantic evolution and cognates: ‘sun, day’; ‘earth (place), soil’; ‘earth’ > ‘ashes’; ‘earth’ > ‘sand’; ‘earth’ > ‘clay’; ‘sand, pebbles’; ‘human skin, animal skin’; ‘skin’ > ‘bark’; ‘hair, fleece, feather’; ‘feather, wing’; ‘person, man’; ‘meat, body’; ‘neck, throat’; ‘good’ > ‘beautiful’; ‘soft’ > ‘warm’. The maps created at LingvoDoc provide evidence of intense language contacts in the past and present, or display an absence of such evidence. Judging by the shape and the size of the areas on the maps it can be seen that some cases of polysemy are local, while others are widespread on the territory of Western Siberia, whole Siberia or whole Eurasia. The highlight is that 7 Samoyed-Turkic-Tungusic parallels, 5 Samoyed-Turkic parallels and 3 Samoyed-Tungusic parallels have been found within the 100-item Swadesh wordlists of these languages. Also, some cases were identified in which extralinguistic factors might have influenced similar changes in genealogically non-related languages (‘bark’ in Samoyed, Turkic and Tungusic) and suggested a Turkic influence on the Samoyed inherited lexicon (‘ashes’, ‘clay’).

KUTADGU BİLİG VE ATEBETÜ’L-HAKÂYIK’TA ARAPÇA VE FARSÇA KELİMELERİN TELAFFUZU

KUTADGU BİLİG VE ATEBETÜ’L-HAKÂYIK’TA ARAPÇA VE FARSÇA KELİMELERİN TELAFFUZU

Author(s): Dilek Herkmen / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 70/2021

Arabic and Persian words in the Kutadgu Bilig and Atebetü'l-Hakâyık have – at some point - transcribed in their current forms. However, They do not fully reflect the 11th century pronunciation. This study aims to evaluate the possible pronunciations of these words in the period in which they were written, as opposed to through the lens of Modern Turkish. That said, the original pronunciation has, it seems, ben preserved in Turkic dialects whose connection with Islam is steeped in both an literary and oral tradition, as is the cause with Turkish. In dialects where Arabic and Persian words enter the language through the spoken language only, they take on phonetic characteristics of that language. In Turkish, they lack palatal harmony. In other Turkic languages, they take on palatal harmony. In the context of Kutadgu Bilig and Atebetü'l-Hakâyık, current data gives us an idea about how such loan words ought to be pronounced beyond palatal harmony; as opposed to how they actually are pronounced. Nevertheless, certain words have counterparts in a handful of other Turkic dialects; however, they too lack sound features that would give us a clue about how they’re pronunced. Some of the more widely used ones have suffix with back vowel in Kutadgu Bilig and Atebetü'l-Hakâyık. Moreover, they are compatible with palatal harmony in certain modern Turkic dialects – albeit not always. Both in Kutadgu Bilig and Atebetü'l-Hakâyık, those words that have suffixes containing back vowel tend to also be pronounced with back vowels in other [Turkic] dialects, whilst others are follow the harmony of palate, and use front/fine vowels instead.

Cause of dictionaries cover the entire vocabulary of a language, they are the basic resources for the survival, preservation and transfer of that language to future generations. Verse dictionaries, on the other hand, were the types of dictionaries that we encountered in the Ottoman field, especially since the XVI. century. Although some of them were written to show the artistic power of the author, most of the verse dictionaries were written to be used in the field of education. Bilingual verse dictionaries were prepared that are easier to memorize, especially depending on the importance of memorization in foreign language learning activities. One of these dictionaries is "Tuhfe-i Şâhidî", which is a Persian-Turkish verse dictionary written by Şâhidî İbrahim Dede to understand Mevleviism and especially Mevlana, who wrote all his works in Persian. In this article, the vocabulary of Şâhidî's dictionary will be examined and the features of the vocabulary of his era will be determined. In addition to being a diachronic work in a way, this analysis will try to explain the developments and changes in the vocabulary of the language by making simultaneous determinations by making connections between the vocabulary of that day and the present vocabulary.

Köktürk inscriptions, which were first coincided in Siberia at the beginning of the century and determined in different parts of Eurasia in the following years and formed the main sources of Old Turkish, XIX. With the analysis towards the end of the century, a lot of information was brought to light. Orhon Inscriptions, one of the oldest written documents of the Turkish language, are inscriptions that provide information about Turkish literature, history, culture and social life. The Perevodchik-Terjiman Newspaper: A Bilingual Phenomenon of the Muslim Press in Late Imperial Russia

Author(s): Nadhezda Tikhonova / Language(s): English Issue: 39/2021

This case study examines the bilingualism of the prominent Russian Muslim newspaper of the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, known as the Perevodchik-Terjiman (literally “Translator” or “Interpreter”) by means of discourse analysis. This newspaper was published from 1883 to 1918 in Crimea, until 1914 by Ismail Gasprinskii (1851‒1914), a prominent enlightener of Russian Muslims. Until December 1905, the newspaper was issued in two languages–Russian and so-called common-Turkic. The latter language was unsuccessfully intended to become a common literary language for Russian Muslims. Despite the declarations, the parallel articles in Russian and Turkic barely presented direct translations from one language to another. On the contrary, there were significant differences. The differences in Russian and Turkic narratives were not markers of opposing intentions or obscure meanings. It is argued here that this feature can be qualified as an instance of cultural bilingualism, which reflected the multiculturalism of the newspaper’s heterogeneous audience.

PRILOG PROUČAVANJU POSTPOZICIJA, VEZNIKA I UZVIKA U DJELU DÎVÂNÜ LÜGÂTİ'T-TÜRK I SAVREMENOME TURSKOM JEZIKU

Author(s): Edina Solak,Mirza Bašić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 19/2021

This paper analyzes morphological and semantic characteristics of postpositions, conjunctions and interjections in the philological encyclopedia Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk by Mahmud al- Kashgari. The analysis of grammatical and semantic structures of postpositions, conjunctions and interjections is based on an analytical and descriptive research method and a contrastive method. The analytical and descriptive research method describes grammatical characteristics of postpositions, conjunctions and interjections, while the contrastive analysis compares the grammatical and semantic structures of postpositions, conjunctions and interjections found in Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk to semantically similar lexemes or syntactic structures in the modern Turkish and Bosnian language. The results obtained from the analysis should contribute to better knowledge and understanding of grammatical and semantic structures of the Turkish language from a diachronic perspective, primarily because the analysis is based on concrete contextual examples from this philological encyclopedia containing all grammatical and semantical characteristics of Turkic languages in the 11th century. Actually, an analysis like this should contribute to better understanding of morphological and semantic characteristics of postpositions, conjunctions and interjections in the Turkish language and their semantic equivalents in the Bosnian language. The results obtained from the analysis can serve as a good foundation and a good starting point for further research of grammatical and semantic structure of Turkish from a diachronic perspective. The fundamental sources used for the analysis are the first and the third volume of the translation of Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk prepared by Besim Atalay.

Prilog proučavanju sufiksalne tvorbe riječi u turskome jeziku: analiza deverbalnih derivacijskih sufiksa za izvođenje imenskih riječi u djelu Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk

Author(s): Edina Solak,Mirza Bašić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 70/2021

Suffix word formation is a characteristic of Turkish language grammar, and this paper analyzes grammatical and semantic structures of deverbal derivative suffixes for nominal word formation in Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk. Actually, this paper analyzes particular (con)textual examples from Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk, which uses nominal words formed by adding derivative endings to the root or base of a verb. The analysis of derivative suffixes added to the root or base of a verb to make nominal words is based on examples from the encyclopedia which contains all particularities of Turkic languages in the 11th century, thus pointing out the fact that such an analysis should be a peculiar contribution to the study of Turkish language from a diachronic perspective. Moreover, the results obtained from the analysis should contribute to the better knowledge and comprehension of suffix word formation in Turkish language and they could be a good foundation and a good starting point for further research on derivative suffixes from a diachronic perspective.

Author(s): Dino Mujadžević / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 70/2021

The paper deals with the work Tārīḫ-i Belġra̱d (History of Belgrade) from the end of the 17th century, with an emphasis on the transfer of knowledge from Western sources to this work, which is largely based on the Ottoman translation of the modern Dutch Atlas Maior. Based on the analysis of the chapters on Bosnia, Herzegovina and Slavonia, the paper emphasizes that this work, as well as the original translation from which it originated, is not a mere translation of the text from the atlas, but a reworking to which numerous information from the Ottoman sources has been added, especially when describing areas under the Ottoman rule. Also, the paper critically discusses the authorship, the origin of the work and the existing transcription. At the end of the paper, a translation of the mentioned chapters with the revised transcription of toponyms from the work are given.
