Author(s): Svetlomir Zdravkov,Martin J. Ivanov,Petya Klimentova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

Internet mediation is playing an increasingly important role in informing the public about scientific news. Thus, it became the main source of data that formed the public’s image of science. The digital traces that users leave on many online platforms are an important source of empirical data that is barely being used; it may reveal new ways to connect science and society. That is why we propose anew conceptual approach within the Public Understanding of Science, which will lay the foundations for future empirical research. It integrates the combination of Actor Network Theory and machine learning in the analysis of large text arrays, which allow both quantitative measurement and qualitative analysis of popular scientific discussions in the online space.

Образование за устойчиво развитие – практико-приложни аспекти

Author(s): Tonya Georgieva,Zlatka Vakleva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

Education for sustainable development (ESD) is a priority in school practice. It is a tool for achieving sustainability and aims to prepare young people for a balanced, harmonious and sustainable world for the present and future generations. The concept of sustainable development is constantly evolving and enriching. ESD is based on a three-component system: environment, society and economy. The paradigm for sustainable development is becoming increasingly popular in the education system. It integrates ESD principles into all levels of education. One of its goals is to form competencies for sustainable development. The research uses the methods of pedagogical research: critical review of the literature, content analysis of curricula, methodological modeling. The research focuses on the methodology for effective implementation of ESD in school practice. The purpose of the present study is to interpret highlights from the content of ESD; explore opportunities for the formation of competencies for sustainability in school practice; present models reflecting the main components of ESD and the interrelationships between them. This article contributes to expanding the debate on ESD and operationalizing the competencies for sustainability in a specific subject area.

Възможности на учебния експеримент за формиране на природонаучна грамотност на студентите – бъдещи учители по химия

Author(s): Antoaneta Angelacheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

The chemical experiment as a scientific method is in the focus of students' attention when studying different chemical disciplines in higher education. As a method of scientific and educational knowledge it is also a subject of special studying at the chemistry didactics lecture course and at the practice classes in Methods and Techniques of School Chemical Experiment. In the work is proposed а methodology for application of the school experiment with a view to forming scientific literacy of students – future chemistry teachers. The effectiveness of the developed methodology is proved through pedagogical experiment. It includes students trained in the Bachelor's programs “Biology and Chemistry”, “Chemistry and English” at University of Plovdiv. The experimental data show that the developed didactic models for the experimental study of substances and chemical processes have a positive effect on students’ cognitive results with a view to forming and developing scientific literacy.

How to Improve the First-Year Students Motivation in Learning Matrices

Author(s): Emiliya Koleva / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

Linear algebra is one of the fundamental courses included in the curriculum of all mathematical, engineering and economic specialties. Students study the subject during the first semester. At this early stage in their education, they cannot realize the connection of the discipline with the specialized subjects. This demotivates the students and they do not make any effort to absorb and assimilate the material. The purpose of this article is to show at least a small part of the applications of Linear algebra in computer science, using only some basic concepts and thus to motivate students for more in-depth understanding of the material in the course. The article takes into account that not all first-year students have a good knowledge of programming. That’s why the software used to illustrate the examples in the article is Matlab. It’s a matrix-based software. Built-in graphics make it easy to visualize and gain insights from data.

Author(s): Ognyan Miladinov,Milena Kuleva,Mihail Konchev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2022

The article focuses on studying the success rate of NSA “Vasil Levski” students in the period of distance semester examinations in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The average exam scores between in-person and remote examination periods are compared. The following indicators were examined: the number of examinations held and the number of examinations passed by students; distribution in absolute and relative values of the scores obtained in the range according to the Bulgarian assessment scale; averages of the scores obtained. It has been found that the distance learning platform virtual.nsa.bg offers favorable conditions for quality online exams, which allow obtaining grades adequate to the knowledge shown by the examinees. The methodology by which test exams are created in the platform, and the security mechanisms developed when conducting exams significantly reduce the opportunities for examinees to artificially increase their grades without having demonstrated the required knowledge.

Учителят по история – между педагога и историка

Author(s): Kostadin Paev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2022

As soon as the methodological thought of teaching history emerged, complex relationships arose between the special and pedagogical training of teachers in the subject. In the historical development of these relationships, one direction or another has prevailed. Between the two world wars, the so-called “didactic universalismˮ was imposed in our country, in which priority was given to pedagogical, at the expense of specializing training. In recent years, through the regulations issued by the Ministry of Education, there is a tendency to return to didactic universalism, which has a negative impact on the preparation of students– future teachers.

Author(s): Irina Ivanova,Penka Kozhuharova,Rumyana Todorova / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2022

Rapid changes in society and education, and the demand for high professional standards as a prerequisite for successful student learning, necessitate a constant update of teachers’ professional knowledge and skills. In this context, coaching is seen as a powerful tool for self-development and self-actualization, which unlocks learners’ potential and maximizes their achievements. The article focuses on ensuring sustainability in teachers ’professional development and improving teachers’ competence by introducing them to basic coaching skills which they can use to improve learners’ results and their relationships with educators. The discussion is based on data from the implementation of a coaching-based teaching methodology comprising3 modules which deal with different aspects of coaching. The modules were piloted and evaluated on the basis of their overall effectiveness, and teachers ’and learners’ development. The participants in the study included 39 educators working in educational institutions in 6 European countries. The analysis is based on data collected by means of questionnaires for the participants, post-piloting focus-groups and individual interviews. The findings suggest improvement in teacher – student relationships, creativity, motivation, goal-setting, and job satisfaction. In terms of benefits for teachers, the highest values were given to the development of professional competence, and improving the effectiveness of teaching. In terms of module content, the participants preferred the linear progression from general to specific, thus choosing to focus on coaching essentials and basic coaching skills before moving on to their application inworking with learners. In their feedback the participants singled out the topics of self-reflection, active listening and focusing on solutions as most interesting and useful. As for modules’ usefulness for learners’ development, the highest values were given to learners’ ability to set goals, followed by improving creativity, improving communication, and increasing motivation.

The study involved students studying under the National Program “IT Career Training” (NPITC), with which the CBE was conducted and a group of students in which traditional training in the profession was conducted. The prepared self-assessment questionnaire includes questions related to the development of basic and specific competencies. The questions on specific competencies are based on the competency models used in the IT sector. The results of the survey show that students who participated in the CBE have a higher self-esteem than student strained in the traditional approach.
