LICENTIOUS LANGUAGE IN ROMANIAN TRANSLATIONS OF MARIO VARGAS LLOSA’S PROSE: LA CIUDAD Y LOS PERROS

Hispanic-American literature has an impressive social force and is an important milestone. Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the most important writers on the South American continent and through his work presents the Latin-American world in its entire splendor. Through the novel The city and the dogs the city of Lima and the entire country of Peru societies are sketched through the perspective of young people at the ,,Leoncio Prado” Military High School in Lima. In his text the slang, the jargon, the licentious language is outlining the characterization of the characters, but we also find replana elements (Peruvian slang extended in all the layers of the language). Spanish language in Latin America (the former Spanish Colonial Empire) had a similar evolution to the standard Spanish language in the Iberian Peninsula, but was influenced by the languages of the great Aztec, Maya and Inca Empires, or the languages of slaves brought from Africa. Thus, the Spanish language in Hispanic America developed different meanings for some words, as well as various differences at all levels of the language.

BILINGUALISM AND SELF-TRANSLATION IN SAMUEL BECKETT’S WORKS

This work aims to examine Samuel Beckett’s bilingual development, as well as the practice of self-translation of the English-French versions of his texts. In Beckett’s case it isn’t about a definitive switch to French but about a relatively balanced cohabitation between English and French with a predilection for the latter. It was the author himself who translated most of his works in the two languages. The differences between them are very interesting. His switching from one language to the other did not arise from his desire to be technically perfect but from a real enactment of a literary project.

Odbiorca tłumaczenia w międzykulturowym treningu mediacyjnym (na przykładzie prac chińskich studentów polonistyki)

The aim of this paper is to present and describe the development of textual mediation skills in the approach proposed by companion volume to Common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR CV) from 2018. The approach described in CEFR CV was applied during a translatology course for Chinese students of Polish language and culture, whose intersemiotic and intralingual translations are analyzed in this paper. According to Heinz Vater the ‘text’ is a linguistic (written or oral) phenomenon that comes into effect in a context and is understandable (complete) within a given situation. It should also be cohesive (grammatically correct) and coherent (semantically consistent). Examples of difficulty with all these indicators of textuality were found in the work of Chinese students, ranging from lack of cohesion, through lack of coherence, to the communicative dependence of the target text on the source text and not taking into account features of the target recipient. The authors focus on this last aspect and discuss the ways the students’ translations present the world and protagonists depicted in the source texts. Successful (i.e., target recipient-oriented) and unsuccessful translation solutions are indicated and potential causes of disruptions in the mediation process are identified.

ორჰან ფამუქის რომანის „მდუმარე სახლი“ ქართულ თარგმანში: „ზნეობრივი ფასეულების გამომხატველი ლექსიკური ერთეულები“

Following his novel titled “Cevdet Bey and His Sons”, Orhan Pamuk wrote his second novel titled “The House of Silence” in 1983. Translated into many languages, the French translation of the novel won Prix de la Découverte Européenne award in 1991. In “The House of Silence”, Orhan Pamuk narrates the story of a week in 1980 that three grandchildren, one of whom was depicted as a historian, another as a revolutionist, and the other as an individual aspiring to become rich, spend in the mansion of their grandmother in Cennethisar, which is located 50 km away from Istanbul. Orhan Pamuk is the first author of the Turkish Literature to win the Nobel Prize. As a prolific writer, Orhan Pamuk is a famous author across the world. His novels, which have been translated into many languages, have also been translated into the Georgian language. Pamuk’s works, which are known in Georgia and favored by Georgian readers, draws significant interest in Georgia. Pamuk’s novels such as “Cevdet Bey and His Sons”, “Museum of Innocence”, “The House of Silence”, etc. have been translated into the Georgian language. “The House of Silence” has been translated into Georgian by Lia Claidize. In this study, it will be examined how the lexical elements that reflect moral values in the novel “The House of Silence” were translated from their original meaning in Turkish to Georgian. In the study, the sentences containing “lexical elements that express moral values” in Orhan Pamuk’s novel “The House of Silence” will be presented in tables in both Turkish and Georgian languages. “Lexical elements that express moral values” will be examined under affirmative and negative headings. The ”lexical elements that express moral values” included in Orhan Pamuk’s “The House of Silence” are word groups that come from the life itself and exist in all cultures. Examining these elements under two headings of affirmative and negative expressions shows that negative words as well as affirmative words support cultural richness. While these word groups found in different cultures point to linguistic wealth, these expressions meet with the readers through translation. The study aims to pioneer in the examination of “lexical elements that reflect moral values” and to reveal the lexical items that reflect these values.

This work aims to examine the practice of self-translation of the book The End of My Addiction/ Le dernier verre written by the famous cardiologist Olivier Ameisen. Numerous examples from the French and English versions will illustrate the lexical, stylistic, semantic and cultural particularities of self-translation in Olivier Ameisen’s work. The complex process of self-translation integrates one’s all dimensions: heart, body, soul, intellect, feelings and extrasensory perceptions.

ON THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ARMENIAN TRANSLATION VERSIONS OF SHAKESPEARE’S SONNETS

The article touches upon the comparative study of Armenian translation versions of Shakespeare’s 8th and 66th sonnets by Gevorg Emin and Samvel Mkrtchyan. On the one hand, due to the comparative analyses of translation versions and the original text, it becomes obvious that the translators attempted to maintain the equivalence. However, on the other hand, the accumulated data proved that each translator perceived the message of the sonnets individually, which consequently affected their translation versions bringing some differences to the limelight. Overall,it can be stated that though having vivid divergences both Gevorg Emin and Samvel Mkrtchyan preserved the equivalence between the target and source texts.

Approche contrastive anglais-français de la création lexicale science-fictionnelle

Imaginary genres have always played with language and lexicon in order to build their worlds. The science fiction genre, in particular, creates a lexicon on the borderline between literary creation and scientific and technical terminology so the stories can be framed elsewhere or in the future. The translation of these invented words can be a real challenge for translators because of their very nature as hybrids, but also because of the science fictional megatext. The translation treatment from English into French of these neologisms, known as “fiction terms”, shows different strategies of lexical (re)creation. Following a terminological approach, this paper presents a contrastive analysis of lexical creation strategies and morphosyntactic structures between the two languages on a list of science fictional terms from the audiovisual field and extracted from a corpus of science fiction novels.

TRANSLATING TITLES: ROALD DAHL’S THE BFG IN ROMANIAN

This article treats the subject of translating titles and the implications of such an undertaking. Given that titles are of major importance to the rhetoric of a text, their translation requires proper deliberation. Any change, irrespective of how extensive it is, can have an impact on the functions fulfilled by the title and, consequently, on the reception of the text by the reading public.Such changes can be operated either on a part of the title or on the entire title when freely translated.This paper presents three classifications of titles in order to apply them to the three translations of Roald Dahl’s The BFG into Romanian, since each version has been given a different title from the previous one. The Romanian translators’ solutions in this respect are analyzed in the second half of this article in an attempt to highlight the main shifts in meaning they incur and how they are interpreted as a result of these changes.

This article deals with a part of the activity of translation of the musical repertoire of Byzantine influence performed by Visarion from Neamț. It is structured in two sections: the former deals with the life, activity and context in which Visarion carried out his activity, while the latter consists of a morphological and syntactic comparative analysis of the Doxastarion of Iakovos Protopsaltis as proposed by Visarion from Neamț. The paper begins with a description of the historical and musical context preceding Visarion’s time, as a period marked by transformations that illustrated a new vision in the field of ecclesiastical music. We have also tried to highlight the contribution of the monastic community from Neamț to the promotion of the Byzantine musical art by disseminating its repertoire. The first part of the article ends with the presentation of Visarion’s biographical data and a description of his complex personality and musical skills. The second part focuses on certain mechanisms of adaptation of the chants of the Doxastarion by Iakovos Protopsaltis in the version of Visarion from Neamț. The first step was to identify the linguistic differences that underlie the differences in the musical treatment. We then continued by identifying certain mechanisms of translation of these chants into Romanian, which are presented along with relevant musical examples, for a better understanding.

This time, the article reveals the correspondence between the part of the manuscript entitled Pamoksłas ape Kiemioniszkas Naminiku Pawinastes (p. 352–378) and the texts from the book Powinnosci Gospodarzow Wieyskich (1779) by Juozapas Legavičius (1743–1812).

Women in the Book Publishing Industry of Latvia During the Interwar Period

This article explores the materials available that reflect women’s achievements in the publishing industry of Latvia during the period from 1918 until 1940. The publications produced by Ilga Zvanītāja, Anna Grobiņa and Emīlija Benjamiņa are analysed in detail, including the way they were critiqued and received by the public, and also the specialisation in publishing particular literary genres. Each of the female publishers pursued a different publishing strategy and offered a differing range of published works. The empirical foundation for the article encompasses evidence of women’s activity in the publishing industry as found in documents from the Latvijas Valsts vēstures arhīvs (Latvian State Historical Archive), overviews published in periodicals, reviews and bookseller advertisements, and bibliographic data. The aim of the publication of this article is to provide a more comprehensive background to the collective discourse about the history of Latvian book publishing, enhancing knowledge about the women working in the industry in the 1920s and 1930s.

Witold Gombrowicz’ Ferdydurke auf Deutsch. Zeugnisse zur Genese, Übersetzung und Publikation

The 1960 German edition of Ferdydurke by Witold Gombrowicz (1904-1969) was the very beginning of the reception of Gombrowicz’s oeuvre in Germany. Together with the writings of Stanislaw I. Witkiewicz and Bruno Schulz, the German reception of Gombrowicz’s work largely affected how the entire Polish post-WWII literature has been discussed. Rudolf Richter (1894-1974) debuted with his translation of Ferdydurke in Germany. Richter’s further translation work has not only turned out to be prolific but also essential in creating the literary Polish Wave in Germany. The article is based on the hitherto unknown sources from the estates of Gombrowicz, Richter and the German editor Günther Neske. It presents the contexts of how the translation and publication of Ferdydurke came about.

HAT ALBERTUS MAGNUS DAS PROKLISCHE PARADIGMA DES LIBER DE CAUSIS ERKANNT?

The oldest of the three known manuscripts of the Arabic Liber de causis (Leiden, Bibliotheek der Rijksuniversiteit, Or. 209) and its Latin translation by Gerhard of Cremona transmit this work under the title Kitāb al-Īḍāḥ li-Arisṭūṭālīs fī l-Ḫayr al-maḥḍ respectively Liber Aristotelis de expositione bonitatis purae. The attribution to Aristotle was already doubted in the Latin West in the first half of the 13th century. Albertus Magnus held to the Aristotelian origin of the Liber de causis and possibly had the Theologia Aristotelis in mind, but he was already aware when he wrote the De homine (Summa de creaturis, Part II) that behind this supposed work of Aristotle there was not Aristotle alone, but several authors. A careful reading of Albertus’ explanations on the question of the author of the Liber de causis, which he presents at the beginning of his commentary on this work seems to offer some clues for the assumption that he considered its author to be identical with the author of the Elementatio physica, i.e. Proclus. For a cautious interpretation of Albertus’ statements in this sense, some external indications will be considered in addition to the internal reasons.

Teaching ESP – New Strategies and Approaches

The 21st century has become the epoch of the increasingly interconnected world that has faced the social integration caused by the migration, regional conflicts or natural disasters. As a result of the latter, different minority groups settled in new countries and made attempts at being incorporated into a mainstream society. The process of integration necessitated a rapid assimilation via giving newcomers the possibility of living and getting an education. As a result, many groups of multilingual learners appeared throughout the world. The paper deals with the innovative approaches to teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) via translation, heteroglossia, translanguaging as well as code-switching. It is based on eight years’ experience gained at the Department of English Philology at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). The methodology is oriented to the multiethnic groups of students and considers the modern approaches to teaching the vocabulary, grammar and translation. The accent is put on the acquisition of the specialized terminology via labelling, plying between terminological units as well as corpus-based analysis.

POLSKIE TŁUMACZENIA HISTORII ALEKSANDRA WIELKIEGO W UJĘCIU JĘZYKOZNAWCZYM – STAN I PERSPEKTYWY BADAŃ

The author presents the state of research of Polish translations of The Story of Alexander the Great – a manuscript translation by Leonard of Bończa (1510) and an anonymous print publication of 1550 as a comparative source; both sources constitute a series of translations. The manuscript provides an interesting lexical material (especially various synonymic equivalents placed in the glosses), which can broaden our knowledge on the affluence of lexical resource of Old Polish language. The study of translational practice of a medieval author opens up new perspectives of research, because of varied use of Latin in Polish language. The 16th century print publication sheds some light on the stylistic and linguistic characteristics of the manuscript, indicating constant and variable linguistic elements in diachronic perspective.

TRANSLATOR STATUS: A STUDY OF PALESTINIAN TRANSLATORS

The present paper discusses the status of translation in Occupied Palestine. The paper first provides a theoretical framework to set and expand the scene of the translation movement in Occupied Palestine. Methodologically, a questionnaire has been properly designed to carefully examine the status of translation, and then it is shared on social media platforms, namely Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The answers (30 in total) are received via Google Forms. The findings of the study reveal that no standards for translation is adopted. The study further shows that it is not an easy task to initiate working in Palestine. The study also points out how paramount it is to set legal rights and obligations of a Palestinian Translator/ Interpreter and to establish an association unifies the Palestinian translators.

TRANSLATING PROPER NOUNS: ROALD DAHL’S THE BFG IN ROMANIAN

This article covers the translation of proper nouns, more specifically character names, in children’s texts and the implications of such an undertaking. Much like the title of a text contributes to the reader’s first impression of what he/she is going to read, names represent the first contact with the characters. The manner in which a reader perceives a character and the key in which he/she interprets the character’s actions in the economy of the entire text largely depends upon the translation choices made in respect to the character’s name. Left as such, translated or completely replaced, names are an essential component in the texture of a text, with a major impact on the overall reading experience. This paper looks at the names of the characters in the children’s novel The BFG and in its three translations into Romanian. The Romanian translators’ choices are analysed in the second half of this article in an attempt to highlight the main strategies employed and their effect in the economy of the text.

TRANSLATION METHODS FOR DEALING WITH THE INCONGRUITY OF LABOUR LAW TERMS IN THE POLISH AND BRITISH LEGAL SYSTEMS – A CASE STUDY

The paper aims to discuss incongruent Polish and British terms referring to labour law. The terms characteristic of each of the three separate legal systems: of England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland are called British terms in this paper. The Polish terms under analysis appear in the Polish Labour Code Act of 26 June 1994 and name types of benefits granted under the Polish Labour Code. The English equivalents of each Polish term researched have been used in two Polish Labour Code translations into English and have been accommodated in the most up-to-date bilingual Polish-English legal dictionary. The research problem is to verify whether the published typology of translation methods used in the Polish-English translation of civil and criminal law terms encompasses translationmethods applied when translating Polish labour law terms into English. The translation methods are defined according to Hejwowski. The theoretical part of the paper includes a presentation of the definitions of a term and incongruity of terms. On the basis of the research, however, it may provisionally be presumed that the published typology of translation methods used in the translation of incongruent Polish and English civil and criminal law terms encompasses the translation methods employed when translating labour law terms into English, as the equivalents under analysis have been formed as a result of the application of as many as four out of the ten methods of the typology.
