Author(s): Anani Stoynev / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 4/2016

The article may be regarded as a continuation and a concretization of the general principles expounded in my previous article „On the Possible Approaches to Studying Bogomilism“, published in Philosophical Alternatives, issue 5, 2015, and occasioned by Erika Lazarova’s book The Bogomil-Cathar Philosophy as a Lived Ethics, Avangard Print, 2013. The author analyzes concepts such as „Bogomil-Cathar philosophy“ and reveals their groundlessness, as well as that of the phrase „lived ethics“, which is a metaphor, not a scientific concept. The article proves the need to work with sources, not metaphors used as sources. The groundlessness of the concept/term „dualist Christianity“ is revealed: Christianity is monistic, and monism cannot possibly be a dualism.

Author(s): Erika Lazarova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 4/2016

The article reveals the scientific incompetence and complete lack of elementary scholarly ethics in A. Stoynev’s quasi-review. It is demonstrated how a superficial reading and lack of familiarity with classical and contemporary scientific sources leads to miscomprehension of the theses regarding dualist Christianity, the genetic link between Bogomilism and Catharism, the pan-ethical and pan-European character of Bogomilism, the immaterial church of dualist heretics, etc. Stoynev’s views on Christianity are hopelessly outdated; moreover, he is evidently not familiar with the genuine meaning of the concept of „heresy“, which means CHOICE, not „falling away from the true faith“. The article exposes the motivation underlying the review in question: the conscious intention to discredit a colleague.

Sztuka, twórczość artystyczna i modlitwa

Sztuka, twórczość artystyczna i modlitwa

Author(s): Janusz Królikowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

One of the key questions with which contemporary theology has to deal is providing support for art, so that it could perform its tradition-honoured role of a „mediator” in relation between man and God. Works of art, especially paintings, have proven their unquestionable value in this respect more than once. The unique role of paintings finds its manifestation particularly in prayer which constitutes a privileged place of meeting between man and God. Artistic creativity in its internal dynamism may constitute substantial aid in this respect, since it not only provides the believers with actual visualisations of religious themes, but also conveys the example for man of how to go beyond oneself, which plays the fundamental role in religion and spirituality.

KARLO CANKAR, SLOVENAC SVEĆENIK U BOSNI (1877.-1953.)

KARLO CANKAR, SLOVENAC SVEĆENIK U BOSNI (1877.-1953.)

Author(s): Mato Zovkić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2020

In Slovenia Karlo Cankar is known for having been younger brother of the country’s most celebrated writer Ivan Cankar. Karlo hosted his brother in Sarajevo for six months in 1909 and during that time Ivan wrote his play, Hlapci (Serfs). Karlo preserved Ivan’s letters, which were published in three volumes in Ljubljana 1948 by their cousin dr. Izidor Cankar. Karlo was a seminarian of Ljubljana diocese in 1901 when he decided to continue his theological studies in Sarajevo as a candidate for the priesthood of Sarajevo Archdiocese. He was ordained in 1903 and performed different ministries in Sarajevo from 1904 to 1929. He supported the view of Archbishop Josip Stadler that Croats and Slovenes could have a prosperous future within the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy if the monarchy granted them more ethnic and cultural rights. This is why Stadler entrusted him with the office of editor-in-chief of Hrvatski Dnevnik (1906-1918), a daily political newspaper desigebnd to inform Catholic Croats of Bosnia and Herzegovina about Catholic social thought and activity. Stadler’s successor, Ivan Šarić, named Cankar a canon of Vrhbosna-Sarajevo chapter in 1923 and asked him to assume the task of editor-in-chief of Katolički Tjednik, the weekly Magazine for Croat Catholics in Bosnia. In his essays, Cankar highlighted the scandalous abuses of Vojo Janjić, Minister for Religions in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and of other Serb state employees who behaved as if the new state of the South Slavs were simply an enlargement of the Kingdom of Serbia. In this period, canons received their salaries from the state budget, and Vojo Janjić punished Cankar by withdrawing his salary. In 1926 Fr. Dragutin Kamber wrote an article in Katolički Tjednik announcing his intention to transform this weekly into an organ of Catholic Action, inspired by the Bosnian view of this lay apostolate movement that emerged from the 1922 encyclical of Pope Pius XI Ubi Arcano Dei. Cankar supported the role of the lay apostolate as proposed by Zagreb supporters of the movement. Since Archbishop Šarić took the side of Fr. Kamber, Cankar resigned from editing the Katolički tjednik and writing for it. On 24 September 1929 Cankar was named parish priest of Lukavac and dean of Tuzla deanery. In October 1937 he resigned from pastoral ministry due to his health and was given accommodation in “Egypt”, an orphanage and elementary school for poor children run by the Servants of the Infant Jesus in Sarajevo. In 1949 the communist regime confiscated all schools run by Catholic nuns in Sarajevo. Thanks to the mediation of his cousin, dr. Izidor Cankar, who was a public figure in Ljubljana, Karlo moved in 1949 to the Franciscan Convent in Ljubljana where he finished his earthly journey on 9 February 1953. Together with Anton Jeglič, a Slovenian priest who was a canon in Sarajevo for sixteen years in the late 19th century and bishop of Ljubljana from 1898 to 1930, Karlo Cankar affirmed the friendly relations of Croat Catholics and Slovenes. This friendship was confirmed by bl. Aloysius Stepinac, Archbishop of Zagreb who provided acceptance and pastoral assignment for 534 Slovene priests driven from their parishes or religious communities by the pro-Nazi regime during World War Two.

PISANI IZVORI O JOSIPU STADLERU U NADBISKUPIJSKOM ARHIVU U ĐAKOVU

PISANI IZVORI O JOSIPU STADLERU U NADBISKUPIJSKOM ARHIVU U ĐAKOVU

Author(s): Vlatko Dolančić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2020

Josip Stadler is one of the often neglected and rarely mentioned Croatian figures who were influential at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Brod, the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna since 1881, he left a deep mark in Sarajevo and Bosnia, especially in the religious field. Since he focused most of his efforts on setting up a new church hierarchy in Bosnia, he often corresponded with representatives of the diocesan administration in Đakovo. These records, in the form of letters, are preserved in the Archdiocesan Archives in Đakovo (in the archive of Josip Juraj Strossmayer and the archive of the Ordinariate) and preserve rich and important information about Stadler’s plans, ideas, fears, challenges and solutions. The paper provides information on sources kept in the Archdiocesan Archives in Đakovo: archival material (letters) written by Josip Stadler himself, and also material in which Stadler is mentioned, from his birth and baptism until the end of the 20th century.

Kielich i patena Konrada Mazowieckiego z XIII wieku – kopia dla Archidiecezji Szczecińsko-Kamieńskiej

Kielich i patena Konrada Mazowieckiego z XIII wieku – kopia dla Archidiecezji Szczecińsko-Kamieńskiej

Author(s): Andrzej Krzystek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 27/2020

A copy of the goblet and paten of Konrad Mazowiecki, made on the basis of the original from the mid-thirteenth century, was made as part of the research work of the Department of Practical Theology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Szczecin in cooperation with the “ArtSacr” studio of Jerzy Stachurski Master of Artistic Craft. The chalice and paten offered to the Płock cathedral are an act of reparation of the Mazovian prince Konrad for the murder of priest Jan Czapla, canon of the Plock (Płock) cathedral chapter, Plock (Płock) and Wloclawek (Włocławek) scholastics, made in Plock (Płock) in 1239. The Konrad Chalice is one of the most outstanding works of art from the Middle Ages in Poland. The original made in silver with elements of gilding is in the cathedral treasury of the Diocesan Museum in Plock (Płock). A copy of the goblet and patens was made of bronze, by casting with engraving and carving, silver plated on the outside, and the center of the cup of the gilded plate. From the workshop and iconographic side, it is a work of the highest class. Particularly noteworthy is the iconography, which presents mature theological thought. The Plock (Płock) chalice was made in the Romanesque style (13th century), but you can see the beginnings of a new Gothic style. This is evidenced by the shape of the goblet and the cup nodus. The article discusses the origin of the cup and patens, as well as their description, iconography and theology. Making a copy of the cup and paten for the Archdiocese of Szczecin and Kamien (Kamień) is a contribution to the promotion of Polish culture and national heritage and is a reminder of the historical ties connecting Szczecin and Western Pomerania with Poland in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Listy pasterskie, okólniki i inne pisma rektora Polskiej Misji Katolickiej, ks. Leona Łagody, w zbiorach Archiwum PMK w Paryżu

Author(s): Sławomir Zych / Language(s): Polish Issue: 41/2020

The aim of the article is to present the activity of the Polish Catholic Mission in France on the example of letters written by its rector, Fr. Leon Łagoda. The author analyses the content of this collection, referring mainly to the years 1929–1933. The collection sheds light on the pastoral and organisational activity of the Polish Catholic Mission in France. The author makes a clear distinction between the letters which Rector Leon Łagoda addressed to the faithful and the circulars, which were official texts intended for the clergy. A separate category constitutes letters addressed, for instance, to church hierarchs or those related to different celebrations.

Salezjanie polscy – kapelani wojskowi i duszpasterze na obczyźnie

Salezjanie polscy – kapelani wojskowi i duszpasterze na obczyźnie

Author(s): Jan Pietrzykowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 41/2020

Polish Salesians regarded field priesthood as a seasonal charitable activity performed for the sake of neighbours. It was mostly a rank-and-file initiative of particular priests, which was tolerated by monastic superiors. During the First World War the work of the Salesians staying in Western Europe basically consisted in taking care of their compatriots in POW’s camps or hospitals. During the Second World War the priests staying away from Poland already worked as army chaplains both among the interned Polish people in Hungary and on a wandering and combat trail leading from the Soviet Union through Italy to Great Britain. Most of those priests stayed among combatant soldiers in England or the United States.

„Felix Culpa” Prymasa Polski Augusta Hlonda?

„Felix Culpa” Prymasa Polski Augusta Hlonda?

Author(s): Waldemar Witold Żurek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 41/2020

The change of the border of Poland after the Second World War and the process of the relocation of Poles to the newly established Polish People’s Republic created a kind of melting pot in the Western and Northern Territories, in which transports arrived from the Eastern Borderlands, Central Poland and Little Poland, as well as from Western countries. In these lands abandoned by Germans, it was the emerging population and religious issues that had the greatest importance. In the post-war reality, the integration process was rather slow in these areas, but it must be noted that the establishment of the organization of the Polish church administration and the pastoral work of the Polish Catholic clergy were invaluable in this matter. After the war, Primate of Poland August Hlond returned to Poland on 20 July 1945, at a time when the fate of the state borders, of the system and, above all, of the Church, so severely afflicted by the war and occupation, was to be decided. The post-war reforms, which were introduced by communists and justified by democratic phraseology, were aimed at building socialist democracy. The church at that time suffered due to implementing land reform. Another clear warning was the annulment of the concordat by communists on 12 September 1945. As a result of Poland’s isolation from the West, Cardinal Hlond considered it necessary to make decisions about establishing Polish organization and the church hierarchy in the Regained Territories without cooperation with the Holy See. He thought that the German church administration could not be maintained in the former German lands. Moreover, he believed that these organizational and legal actions would prevent the communist government from creating areas without the influence of the Church, or from establishing Polish church organization completely dependent on communists, which was attempted in 1950.The establishment of the Polish hierarchy in place of the German was seen as lawless in Germany and partly in the Vatican as early as 1945. On 24 October 1945 Cardinal Hlond sent the document (40 pages) to Rome justifying his actions. He stated that seeing the objections expressed by Rome, he realized that he had misinterpreted the powers and instructions of Tardini obtained from the Pope. As a counter-argument, he described the situation in the Recovered Territories and explained that he had had to act quickly in church matters in order to prevent communists from making decisions in this matter, which would have happened if the German church administration had remained. Hlond’s report to Rome was factually credible, and his territorial divisions of the Church and the establishment of the apostolic administrations did not invoke the Pope’s intervention. Soon it transpired that Hlond’s actions were convenient for the Vatican, and thus he saved Catholicism in one of the countries of the Soviet Bloc. That is why Hlond was never disapproved by the Holy See for what he had done. August Hlond’s beatification process began in 1992. It ended in 1996 at the diocesan level. The Federation of Expellees and the German episcopate were against Hlond’s beatification. In 2017, the Theological Commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints gave a positive opinion about the Positio of 2008. In 2018, the same was done by the cardinals and bishops of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On 19 May 2018, Pope Francis signed a decree on the heroic virtues of Cardinal Hlond. Since then he has had the title of the Venerable Servant of God.

Bishop Andrew of Prague and Church in Medieval Czech Lands after the Fourth Lateran Council

Bishop Andrew of Prague and Church in Medieval Czech Lands after the Fourth Lateran Council

Author(s): Robert Antonín / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

The paper focuses on the personal actions of Bishop Andrew of Prague and the situation within the church in the Czech Lands after the Fourth Lateran Council. Andrew is a central representative in the process of immediate reception of the Fourth Lateran Council in the Czech Lands. Previous research has focused on the fundamental question of Andrews’s episcopate: his conflict with King Ottokar I regarding the church reforms introduced in the Czech Lands between 1216 and 1222. However, it is necessary to study the conflict in a long-term perspective (from the middle of the twelfth till the end of the thirteenth centuries) and in the context of the promotion of the patronage law, the judicial exemption of clergy, and the enforcement of church control over tithes. The analysis shows that the church was a strongly decentralized institution controlled by local lay elites and damaged by nepotism. The private life of the clergy was corrupted by concubinage and, resulting from that, we can see attempts to create ―clerical dynasties.‖ The route to a change only began with Bishop Andrew and the implementation of the change would not have been possible without the overall transformations of the political, economic, social and mental structures.

Na pograniczu liturgii i ceremonii. W poszukiwaniu specyfiki muzycznego opracowania hymnu Te Deum w twórczości Józefa Elsnera

Author(s): Remigiusz Pośpiech / Language(s): Polish Issue: 12/2020

Published in 1815 and dedicated to Tsar Alexander I, Te Deum by Józef Elsner illustrates the trend of religious texts, the function of which can be considered in the context of liturgical celebrations as well as secular ceremonies. On the one hand, this composition is part of the rich traditions of Silesian church music, which the composer was associated with by birth and education. On the other hand, it reflects the state of the development of the 19th century musical culture in Poland, which the greater part of his life was associated with. The compositions mentioned in the article, intended for solo voices, mixed choir and orchestra, consist of five contrasted parts, and are stylistically maintained in the trend of the religious creativity characteristic of Central Europe at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which can also be seen in a number of other works by Elsner.

Author(s): Beata Bodzioch / Language(s): Polish Issue: 12/2020

The comparative research undertaken concerns the repertoire of Advent songs and Christmas carols contained in two selected songbooks. Over the course of almost 200 years many textual changes have been made to the songs. These include changing the order, exchanging many words for others, replacing whole phrases and verses with new wording, and corrections in the number of stanzas. The tendency to modernise old texts and to reduce stanza is particularly noticeable. These processes are not the result of the natural evolution of language, but the result of the intervention of individuals. It is difficult to agree with many of the consequences of these interventions. The scale of transformation of the selected song group and the conclusions can only be more fully determined after a comparative study of the melody and rhythm of the songs.

Pavol Krška (1949) – A Slovak Composer of Sacred Music

Author(s): Miriam Matejová / Language(s): English Issue: 12/2020

This article deals with selected sacred compositions of the Slovak composer Pavol Krška (1949), who is one of the most important representatives of sacred music in Slovakia in recent decades. His vocal and instrumental pieces Requiem, Stabat Mater and Te Deum are frequently performed and thus brought to the attention of both the lay and professional music community. We believe that, as the composer’s work is so well-known in Slovakia, it will gradually find its place abroad.

Pastoralni rad fra Ilije Starčevića

Author(s): Mato Nedić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 53/2020

Author(s): Damjan Prelovšek / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 53/2020

Miejsce ikony w wierze i rozumieniu św. Jana Pawła II

Author(s): Urszula Mazurczak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4S/2020

The letter of the Holy Father John Paul II written in Rome in 1987, in the tenth year of His pontificate, on December 4th, on the day of memorial of Saint John Damascene, the doctor of the Church, on the Twelfth Centenary of finishing the controversy over the icon, is of great importance for the Pope’s program of ecumenism. The Holy Father indicated various directions of the dialogue, however, the one of the utmost importance concerned the agreement with the Orthodox Church, which was confirmed in the letters and in His other documents quoted in this paper. The image used to be essential for religious practice, for illustrating the word of prayer and of the song, in order to preserve the tradition of the Church. The strict prohibition introduced by the iconoclasm depreciated not only the artistic tradition of paintings but also the basic dogmas of Christ’s Incarnation and the one which introduced Virgin Mary as the Theotokos (the God-bearer). The ban constituted a threat not only for the icons but also for the Christian faith. In His Letter, the Pope underlined the important role of the Second Council of Nicaea which reintroduced icons and maintained and deepened the meaning of the cult in the faith of believers. Furthermore, the Holy Father indicated the connection with the Second Vatican Council in understanding the function and form of images in contemporary Church. Contemporary trends are overwhelmed by the impotence of the spiritual expression of sacral art, which is a great concern for the Pope. The Letter is, therefore, a dramatic warning of the threats for religious art in contemporary time, expressed by the Holy Father with these words: ‘The rediscovery of the Christian icon will also help in raising the awareness of the urgency of reacting against the depersonalizing and at times degrading effects of the many images that condition our lives in advertisements and the media.’ (DS, 11).

Zofia Katarzyna Branicka Odescalchi zwana pierwszym „polskim papieżem”

Zofia Katarzyna Branicka Odescalchi zwana pierwszym „polskim papieżem”

Author(s): Agnieszka Bender / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4S/2020

Zofia Branicka (1821-1886) was a Polish wealthy noblewoman who married Italian Prince Livio III Erba Odescalchi (1805-1885) in 1841. From then on until her death she lived in Rome. Thanks to her opulent dowry, Odescalchi family could buy back among others, the Bracciano castle (near Rome) from the Torlonia family. Zofia was very well educated and a polyglot. From the very first years of her stay in Rome, she started to organise famous soirees at her salon in Palazzo Odescalchi. In this way Princess Zofi gathered the elite of aristocracy, diplomacy and the clergy, from diff European countries. Soon she had a possibility to get to know the pope Pius IX, with whom she would maintain a real and close friendship. Zofia had informed the pope about the complex situation of Poland, partitioned by her neighbours. From the beginning of her stay in Italy she was involved in charity work. The princess was very involved in financial and organisational help to Polish people in Italy (emigrees, insurgents, priests, artists as Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Leopold Nowotny, Roman Postempski etc.). She closely co-operated with The Congregation of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ in organising the Polish Seminar in Rome in 1866. That was an event of a great importance for Polish people who at that time had no country of their own. Thanks to her deep religiosity and patriotic activity Princess Zofi was known among her contemporaries as “the Polish pope”. Nobody at that time could have imagine that after one hundred years Karol Wojtyła would become the first actual Polish pope.

An Application of Category of Fraternity to the Grassroots Ecumenism on the Basis of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Fratelli tutti

An Application of Category of Fraternity to the Grassroots Ecumenism on the Basis of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Fratelli tutti

Author(s): Przemysław Kantyka / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 20/2020

Although the encyclical of Pope Francis Fratelli tutti does not speak directly about ecumenism, the category of fraternity developed in it can and should apply in the ecumenical movement, especially in the grassroots contacts of Christians from different Churches. Top-down ecumenism, i.e. doctrinal dialogues and meetings of Church leaders, by themselves – although necessary – are not able to bring about an effective reconciliation of Christians living in different Churches and Ecclesial Communities. The hermeneutical key proposed by Pope Francis in the form of the category of the fraternity has a wider application than ecumenical relations. The article examines the determinants of this category and its possible application to the ecumenical movement. An example of the successful application of the idea of fraternity in the activities of the International Ecumenical Fellowship is also given.

United by the same concern Ecumenical impulses of Pope Francis in the context of integral ecology

Author(s): Andrzej Anderwald / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 20/2020

One of the important tasks of the Church in the temporal order are concern for the work of creation and for man himself, and sometimes even the defense against threats of technical progress, conducted from any ethical and moral references. The concern for the common home is not only a domain of the Catholic Church. Similarly, other churches and Christian communities as well as other world religions reflect on the issues relating to the degradation of human and natural environment. Thus, the aim of these reflections is an attempt to recognize ecumenical impulses of the Pope Francis in the context of integral ecology that takes into account the interlinkages between different dimensions of reality. Therefore, during the considerations will be presented firstly the papal diagnosis of the social and ecological crisis (1), then the proposals of actions aiming at the development of integral ecology (2) as well as an invitation to a dialogue resulting from the care for the common home (3). The main sources of the analysis undertaken are the two papal documents, namely the encyclical Laudato si’ (LS) and the post-synodal apostolic exhoration Querida Amazonia (QA).
