The image of Muslims and Islam in Christian Ethiopic hagiographies written in Gə‘əz

The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the image of Muslims and Islam in the Ethiopic hagiographical texts written in the Ethiopic (Gə‘əz) language. On the basis of ca. 20 texts (both edited and remaining in manuscripts) the author surveys how various themes related to Muslims and Islam are present in this genre of Ethiopic literature and what literary purpose they serve. These themes include: economic activities of Muslims, comparing them to Biblical figures, their conversion to Christianity or associating them with Satanic forces. Additionally the article offers a comprehensive overview of Ge’ez terms which are used in reference to the adherents of the Muslim faith.

The article examines the linguistic aspects of the translational reflection on hapax legomena from the Book of Job. Lexical correspondences to the Hebrew hapax in Ruthenian (prosta(ja) mova) and Polish are compared with the material from Vilnius Old Testament Florilegium (F 19–262) (approx. 1517–1533), the Radziviłł Bible (Biblia Radzivillovska) (1563), and the Nesvizh Bible (Biblia Nieświeska) (1568–1572) by Symon Budny. All translations demonstrate examples of both etymological interpretation and representation of figurative meaning based on the closest context. Facts of the usage of classical Jewish exegetic comments suggest the existence of a traditional understanding of the “dark places” in the Book of Job.

"Sophia" Discourse from Antiquity to Christianity

Sophia doctrine was evolved in European philosophical and religious creativity and was developed in the pre-Christian period (Socrates, Parmenides, Plato), was represented in Gnosticism (Valentinus) and Neoplatonism (Plotinus), in the writings of prominent theorists of Christianity – the Fathers of the Church (Athanasius the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Macarius the Great, Gregory the Theologian), the ancient teachers of Christianity (Hilarion, Klim Smoliatich). The doctrine of Sophia, The Wisdom of God is shown in the Proverbs of Solomon Biblical Book, and also in the non-canonical books of the Old Testamentum – Solomon’s Wisdom and the Jesus’ the son of Syrah Wisdom. The Sophia doctrine as mysterious wisdom is described in Kabbalah. It was also reflected in the temple architecture and iconography of the Orthodox East, in the wider use of it at the spiritual and moral level. This doctrine has got a systematic form represented by the doctrine of sophiology in medieval mysticism (M. Eckhart, J. Böhme, E. Swedenborg), and “philosophy of unitotality” (V. Solovyov, S. Bulgakov, P. Florensky). These periods of the Sophia doctrine’s development are inherent in such ideas as a natural philosophy’s theme of understanding the world as the integration, anthropological doctrine of the relationship between nature and the absolute, the existence of God in its close association with the world.

This paper is an introduction to the problem of the relationship between the creation of man in Genesis 1-3 and the scientific perspective of the evolution of the human species. Therefore, we aimed to identify the main research questions and the objectives arising from them. As main questions we have: Did death exist before the fall of man? How did the fall affect the entire creation? How does the biblical account of human creation reconcile with the information about the multitude of hominid species provided by paleontology? At what point in history did Adam and Eve appear and what species were they part of? When exactly did they become in the image and likeness of God? Consistent with these questions, we will have as objectives: the state of the world before the fall of Adam; the creation and fall of man; the origin of death and evil in creation. Another section of this paper deals with the way in which Orthodox theologians approached the problem of the creation-evolution relationship and the solutions they proposed.

In this study, we will deal with “The Secret Work of the Spirit of God in the Old Testament and in Inter-testamentary Judaism”. The study is made up of five parts. The first part deals with the mysterious dynamics of Elohim, full of love and tenderness for the world that is about to be created. In the second part, we emphasized that the Spirit is the one to give life, to create every living being, to renew the face of the earth and that he is present and active in the second creation. In the third part, we referred to three verses of the prophet Isaiah, where ruah YHWH indicates the promised messianic king. In the two subsections, starting from Isaiah 11,1-10, we talked about the rod that shall come forth out of the stem of Jesse and about the spirit upon the servant of YHWH, a text the evangelist Matthew applies to Jesus of Nazareth. In the fourth chapter, the spirit coming from the Holy One is indicated, the spirit that makes its recipient holy. Finally, the fifth part of the study, referring to the Judaic world in the time of Jesus Christ, points out that the Spirit of God is given to the Messiah as a force to fulfil his mission.

The history of Judaism teaches us that one faces a crisis best by devoting himself, even in the very heat of the crisis, to the permanent and enduring values of Judaism and mankind. For the very nature of a crisis is impermanence, transcience, an interruption in the normal development of mankind. The term Judaism, which implies a definable belief-system, has no real equivalent in the traditional vocabulary of the religion itself. Its widespread use in European languages owes largely to the encounter with Christianity, which attaches greater importance to creeds and doctrines. In Jewish tradition, theology and religious concepts rarely have been perceived as defining features. It is more accurate to employ the term Judaism in a broader cultural sense to denote the fulf range of religious expressions of the people of Israel. This usage correctly underscores the national character of the religion, ineftrica bly bound to historical experience, Without attaching disproportionate weight to its theological component. As we shall observe, Judaism contains a complex variety of elements, including law, ethics, morality, observances, worship, and beliefs. Technically, the word Judaism Iike its cognate terms Jew and Jewish—refers to a more narrowly defined time frame within the longer national history, commencing at the conclusion of the biblical era. Whereas earlier epochs had known of twelve tribes of Israel, or of the two rival monarchies of Judah and Israel, a sequente of conquests and exiles brought about a situation in which only a vestige of the original people , dominate by the anciend tribe of Judah and inhabiting its ancestral territory (Judea), was able to maintain its religious and cultural identity through subsquerit generations. In some recent scholarship and theological writing it has become common to restrict the use of Judaism to those manifestations that emerged after the Babylonian exile, as distrinct from earlier Israelite or Hebrew religion. We must take care not to construe this terminological preference as an assertion that the Judaism of the Second Temple was a new and original invention , unconnected to the religion of the Hebrew scriptures.

Accuracy and Reception: On Theological and Aesthetic Novelty in Two Novels by Teodora Dimova

This article raises the question of functioning of the Biblical narrative in modern literature in the context of the local/individual experience of faith and the epistemological and existential question of truth. The focus is on two novels by the Bulgarian writer Teodora Dimova (born in 1960): Марма Мариам [Marma, Mariam, 2010] and Първият рожден ден [The First Birthday, 2016]. This case is particularly interesting because the Biblical story about Jesus has not been used here in order to create a parody or blasphemy, which could be expected as far as the postmodern de-contextualisation and re-evaluation of tradition are concerned, but to offer both an aesthetically original and theologically orthodox vision of the Christian God. So how to paraphrase the Biblical story and remain orthodox? How to actualize the existential potential of the Bible and achieve novelty? The analysis is conducted in the perspective of Paul Ricoeur’s existential hermeneutics and phenomenology of memory, especially his concepts of testimony and mimesis, with regard to the question of the reception of Biblical paraphrases in (Bulgarian) modern culture.

The author analyses the structure and content of this liturgical document as well as its theological meaning. The research reveals that this eucharistic prayer is correct from the theological point of view and constitutes a valuable heritage of the Christian euchological space.

The presented article provides a list of the printed editions of the Bible in Polish which came out over the years 1801-1945. In order to identify specific editions, the literature (as well as available databases) on the topic in question was reviewed. The catalogues of the main Polish antique shops, as well as au-ction and advertising portals were also examined. As a result of these efforts, data was collected on a total of 242 editions of the Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) during the analysed period. 71 out of 242 editions were considered unique or exemplary.

The new edition of the Evangelium printed in Snagov, in 1697 (e1697) is distinguished from the previous ones by two aspects: a) structure of the text – because the accuracy of the biblical references in relation to the moments of the church year is restored and ensured, thus making the correlation between the liturgical book of ecclesiastical use and the archetype-text, the New Testament, divided into chapters; b) linguistic option of the editor, which specifically and consistently aims at the regime of verbal tenses, i.e., the change of the forms of the simple perfect of the basic edition (e1693) into forms of compound perfect. Typographical and linguistic differences identified between e 1697 b[ucharest], e1697 i[ași] and e1697 v[ienna], of the eleven copies of the book, preserved to this day, indicate the unfolding of some stages in the realization of the edition, a complex and nonlinear editorial and typographical behaviour.

The paper for the first time publishes monuments of the Old Permian language written with Abur, or the script of St. Stephen of Perm; these sources are previously unknown or have not been introduced into academic circulation. They are published here as facsimiles, with transliteration, transcription, and Russian translation. Perhaps the oldest of these inscriptions (from the 1460s - the early 1470s?) is the postscript written in a mixture of Old Permian and Russian at the end of the Church Slavonic Homilae by St. Gregory the Great: it was copied in the Ferapontov Monastery, in the White Lake area, perhaps by the hand of St. Martinianus of White Lake (Belozersky). The next earliest of the Old Permian documents — and the earliest to be dated precisely - is scribal marginalia on a manuscript book with the spiritual homilies of St. Isaac the Syrian in a Church Slavonic translation; it was copied in Ust-Vym (the Komi area) in 1486 by Gabriel (Gavrila) the Deacon (Kįldaš). Other Old Permian postscripts were made at the court of the archbishop of Novgorod the Great in the early 1490s in two volumes with the new Church Slavonic translations from the Vulgate; they were prepared in the circle of Archbishop Gennady of Novgorod and Pskov. Finally, the last word of the late 15th - early 16th century inscription in the Church Slavonic Corpus Areopagiticum has been re-attributed as Old Permian rather than Slavic cryptography in Abur; this book was donated to the Annunciation Church of Ust-Vym by St. Pitirim, bishop of Perm. The total number of new texts is 37 word-forms, including lexemes that were not previously recorded for this period - this is significant for the Old Permian corpus of the 15th - early 16th centuries. Although from the graphic, phonetic, grammatical, and lexical points of view, these texts basically represent the same linguistic system found in previously known Old Permian monuments, they demonstrate, on the one hand, the inclusion of Old Permian scribes into the activities of professional Old Russian scriptoria and, on the other, they testify to the emergence of interest on the part of East Slavic bookmen in “indigenous” languages. Knowing these languages could be a sign of belonging to a special intellectual stratum that included both the creators of the first Church Slavonic complete biblical collection (the Gennady Bible) and members of the so-called heresy of the Judaizers.

Researching the Old Testament we identify many clues that war has not been seen as part of mankind’s daily life. Also the central themes of the New Testament are the Savior’s sacrifice by which men were reconciled with God, and their sacrificial love for one another. Analyzing the vision captured in the Qur’an and other books considered to be sacred by the Islamic world, we come to the conclusion that the peace much desired by all mankind can only be achieved by transforming the whole world into Dar al-Islam.

Nepromjenjive riječi u hrvatskoglagoljskim brevijarima

U radu se analiziraju nepromjenjive riječi (prilozi, prijedlozi, veznici, uzvici i čestice) u hrvatskoglagoljskim otisnutim brevijarima (Kosinjski brevijar, Baromićev brevijar, Brozićev brevijar) i u rukopisnom II. novljanskom brevijaru. Pritom se analiziraju psalamski tekstovi kao primjer liturgijskih tekstova i tekst legende o sv. Pavlu Pustinjaku kao primjer neliturgijskih tekstova. Usporednom analizom pokušava se ustanoviti postoje li razlike u tvorbi i upotrebi nepromjenjivih riječi između liturgijskih i neliturgijskih tekstova, te kakav je odnos hrvatskih prema staroslavenskim elementima. Dolazi se do zaključka da nema razlike u upotrebi nepromjenjivih riječi između liturgijskih i neliturgijskih tekstova. Na temelju samih oblika nepromjenjivih riječi utvrđuje se da su svi proučavani tekstovi hrvatsko- staroslavenski, premda fonološki često dolazi do pokušaja prilagođavanja staroslavenskom jeziku (npr. zamjenjivanja iskonskog samoglasnika a poluglasom u prijedlozima: nanь, za- zь, prilogu: nьpridь- naprêždь).

Kvantitatiivne vaade Uue Testamendi 1630.–1730. aastate tõlgetele

The article compares Estonian translations of the New Testament from the 1630s to the 1730s, covering the period from the first extant publications of pericopes until the first full Bible. All existing 28 versions of the gospel of Luke were studied: 21 texts in the North Estonian (or Tallinn) standard language, and seven texts in the South Estonian (or Tartu) standard language. The 62 verses from this gospel which occurred in all 28 translations were compared in five aspects: phonetic, inflectional, morphosyntactic, lexical and orthographical. Tables registering these differences formed input for computer analysis measuring the proximity of translation pairs.The analysis revealed that the first translations in the Tartu language differed greatly from one another in all aspects except orthography, whereas the translations in the Tallinn language can mostly be seen as a series of revisions of the same text. The standard languages were reformed significantly by the Wastne Testament (1686) in South Estonian and Johann Hornung’s translation in North Estonian (written in 1687–88, and preserved as a copy from 1694 called the München manuscript). In contrast to the South Estonian standard language, the language reform was not universally accepted at first in the North Estonian standard language.

The collections of libraries and museums from Romania keep priceless heritage assets. Old books form a distinct category of museal pieces. Such a collection is found at the Metropolitan Library of Bucharest, built in the mid of XXth century and, subsequently, completed by purchase. Within the mentioned holdings are also preserved some copies of old Romanian books whose authors chronologically subsume under the cultural movement generically named the Transylvanian School. We refer to a series of books of distinctly religious, linguistic and historical nature. The study focuses on works – some original, others translations or compilations – of some renowned personalities of the Romanian culture during the Enlightenment, from the end of the XVIIIth century and beginning of the XIXth century.

The aim of the present article is to bring into attention a few observations regarding the inscriptions in Romanian from the Fedelesoiu mural painting, starting from the iconographic repertoire in the county of Valcea, from Constantin Brâncoveanu‘s time, realized by Corina Popa, Ioana Iancovescu, Elisabeta Negrău, Vlad Bedros. The article points out a few caracteristics of the texts, indicating older sources (from the XVIth century). The Bible 1688 is not yet a source from the contemporary paintings and religious inscriptions.

The result should be a blueprint for optimal model ‘retelling’ the biblical text into a form readable by child recipient, i.e. pupil who mastered reading in his or her native language. For a reader it means, that his ability to read indicates with reading also ability to interpret.
