DOĞAL ÇEVRE BİLEŞENLERİ AÇISINDAN YERLEŞİME UYGUNLUK ANALİZİ, PİLOT ÇALIŞMA; ALTINOVA MAHALLESİ (SÜLEYMANPAŞA/TEKİRDAĞ)

Author(s): Emre ÖZŞAHİN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 07/2016

Recently, rapid increase in population across the world has caused an unplanned spread of settlements. This has led to many problems in natural environment. Appropriate site selection works which consider natural environment elements need to be done for settlements in order to solve these problems. This study aims to make habitability analysis for Altınova district, which is one of the important districts of Suleymanpasa city affiliated to Tekirdag municipality in terms of natural environment elements. Based on the analysis results, habitability classes were determined, and habitability map was prepared for Altınova district. This study is significant because it may set an example for appropriate site selection works to be done for Tekirdag, which has recently gained the metropolitan status, and may contribute to urban transformation works. Various thematic maps of different scales were used in this study which employed GIS (Geographical Information Systems) techniques. The obtained findings show that 28.18 % of Altınova district consists of sites that have low habitability. These sites, which are mostly in the southern and western parts of the district, mostly involve sloping lands and areas close to the sea and the streambed. Sites with very high habitability cover 22.96% of the district and they are mostly in the northern part of the district. However, it should be remembered that some parts of these sites involve high risk in terms of liquefaction and micro zonation. In brief, works focusing attention on natural environment elements need to be done to plan settlements in a sustainable way.

Mavi Okyanus Stratejisi: Dünyadan ve Türkiye’den Örnekler

Author(s): Süleyman Ağraş,Fırat Atbaş,Enes Şeyba / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2017

Competition is at the center of much debate on how to explain the nature of today's economic rules. The nature of the competition varies depending on the characteristics of the industrial environment, the competitive attitudes of the firms and the economic conditions of countries. One of the competitive approaches is to see competition as "meaningless". In this study, Blue Ocean Strategy (Blue Ocean Strategy), which proposes competitive advantages to companies struggling in competition and emphasizes leaving behind competition, was evaluated in terms of strategy development paradox. The study also was focused on examples of the blue ocean strategy through examples from the world and Turkey.

Author(s): Stevan Lilić,Mirjana Drenovak-Ivanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2009

The ideas of environmental and social justice imply the possibility of efficient access to administrative and judicial legal remedies in the field of health and environmental protection. The authors examine administrative and administrative-judicial legal protection of public participation in the matters of environmental protection in Serbia, and conclude that current European tendencies are not accepted to the full extent – both in Serbian legislation and in practice. The necessity of reliable legal protection and access to justice in environmental matters in Serbia – and especially the need for protection of the right to public participation in environmental matters – call for ratification of the Aarhus Convention, and for harmonizing Serbian law with it.

AQUACULTURE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Author(s): Paulina Pędziwiatr / Language(s): English Issue: 22/2017

Fish and seafood production has grown steadily in the past five decades. Total world fisheries and aquaculture production reached 167.2 million tonnes in 2014 [1]. Intensive fish production triggers growth in the amount of waste processing, which has serious environmental impacts. Utilization and energy recovery from fish waste have become areas of interest for the global economy. Specialized methods and techniques have been developed to acquire biomethane, biodiesel and biofertilizer from fish biomass. Also, using physical, biochemical and thermochemical processes, relevant substances (such as fish protein hydrolysate, natural pigments, chitosan and collagen) can be obtained.

Author(s): Yuliia Shmehelska / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 2/2017

The research purpose is to analyze the form-making of design decisions and to determine the interconnections with their interior structure, morphology and varieties through the bionics. The research is aimed at analyzing the structural and morphological properties of organic nature forms and their practical implementation in various design areas. In this case, the associative transformation of bioanalogues is applied. The methodology consists of a set of methods that can reveal the scope and purposes of the research. The historical method of cognition is used for the chronological order of the research. This results in additional knowledge obtained in the field of bionics and design, being studied in the process of its development. The analogy method allows revealing the similarity between natural forms and their analogues in design. The generalization method provides the opportunity to make suggestions on the development and implementation of bionic forms in the environment. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the justification of theoretical aspects of the artistic design of miscellaneous designer products, based on the bionic design. In the frame of issues specified, the bionic shaping solutions, which are poorly investigated in the clothing design and are not the research subject in hairdressing, are analyzed. Conclusions. The research shows a practical importance of artistic design construction of designer’s products, based on the nature. The interconnections of the initial components of this system are revealed, which allow outlining new ways of development and possibilities to increase the competitiveness in different areas of design.

О ЦИЉЕВИМА И ЗБИЉСКОЈ УТЕМЕЉЕНОСТИ ОДРЖИВОГ РАЗВОЈА НА ПОЧЕТКУ 21. ВЕКА

Author(s): Miloš Prica / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 68/2014

It is highly indicative that the genesis and development of the principle of sustainable development on the international scale fully corresponds (time-wise) with the genesis and development of the so-called globalization process. As illogical as it may sound, this fact may provide an answer to the question why the institutionalization of the idea of sustainable development at the international level has not contributed to guiding the globalization process towards the basic human values. Had the leading states in the early 1970s been really aware of the need to control the global economy via ecology, the legal nature of sustainable development at the beginning of the 21st century would have its definite and clear reflection on the economic and social developments of humankind. The fact that the states had no such awareness certainly does not entail that the institutionalization of sustainable development was initiated by scholars and the general public, primarily because their role on the international scene has always been perceived as “having a snowball fight with a blizzard”. Considering the fact that environmental issues were suddenly given a huge international publicity in the early 1970s, as well as the fact that the idea of sustainable development was not legally institutionalized at a later stage, we are fully entitled to explore the following issue: whether the idea of sustainable development (just like the idea of globalization) was actually initiated and controlled by the corporate elite in possession of huge financial capital. For, what appears to be illogical may actually be an expression of the brilliant art of ruling demonstrated by the covert power-holders. Just as democracy, human rights and protection of the “free world” have been employed by the United States as a screen for establishing their own imperialisms, the transfer of economic and political power from the state level to the domain of multinational corporations has ensued behind the shroud of international institutionalization of sustainable development; concurrently, environmental issues have been put into the service of justifying the need to transfer the sovereignty from the state to global international institutions. After all, such an understanding of this ruling method is indeed confirmed by the fact that the issue of sustainable development is nowadays largely regarded as a problem of intergenerational solidarity, which is an obvious distraction that leads us off track. The founders of the global neoliberal capitalism do not dispute the need for sustainable development, just as they do not dispute either democracy or the rule of law. Yet, the ruling method employed by the corporate capital elite is not so much exemplified in the denial of the fundamental values of the Western civilization as it is embodied in making these values inconsequential. The latest developments underlying this method today are the sustainable development without a substantial meaning, human rights without actual freedom, the system of representative democracy without a democratic society, and the rule of regulations without the rule of law. Bearing all this in mind, sustainable development may not be equated with the balance of global power of the leading forces on the geo-political scene. The creation of a multi-polar world and the international law reform are important but insufficient conditions for a comprehensive institutionalization of sustainable development. Actually, in order to ensure the capacity of sustainable development as a value-based cornerstone for the survival and development of mankind in the 21st century, it is necessary to disempower the corporate capital elite, encourage the modern man to abandon the materialistic consumptionoriented viewpoint, and move towards creating a system based on ethics and social justice. Moreover, the disempowerment of the corporate capital elite is a necessary precondition for restoring the legitimacy of the rule of law and democracy

ОДРЖИВИ РАЗВОЈ И ЕКОЛОШКА ШТЕТА

Author(s): Radenka Cvetić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 68/2014

The system of environmental protection which enables sustainable development primarily rests on the prevention in order to remove or reduce probability of damage as well as on the strict liability of the polluter for environmental damage even in the absence of private claims for damages. Environment is perceived as a good that per se enjoys legal protection through the polluter pays principle. Environmental legislation in the Republic of Serbia should provide for adequate measures of environmental protection in order to prevent any harm, and in case of environmental damage to provide for an efficient and secure removal of its consequences. In line with the set standards, there is a special mechanism of environmental protection for environmental harm which can be triggered even in the absence of private claims for damages (so-called environmental damage).

O potrzebie ujednolicania norm prawa ochrony środowiska

O potrzebie ujednolicania norm prawa ochrony środowiska

Author(s): Piotr Korzeniowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 71/2012

The text is intended for use by attorneys, government and private-sector personnel who are actively involved in environmental protection, academicians, and others interested in environmental issues. Standardization is defined as best technical application consensual wisdom inclusive of processes for selection in making appropriate choices for ratification coupled with consistent decisions for maintaining obtained standards. The standards applicable to each sector of the environment. When the European Community sets standards for environmental protection, these do not prevent the “progressive” member states from maintaining or introducing more stringent environmental protection measures. Even if the European Community has adopted protective measures, i.e. set certain environmental standards pursuant to Standardization or standardisation is the process of developing and agreeing upon technical standards. A standard is a document that establishes uniform engineering or technical specifications, criteria, methods, processes, or practices. Some standards are mandatory while others are voluntary. Voluntary standards are available if one chooses to use them. Some are de facto standards, meaning a norm or requirement which has an informal but dominant status. Some standards are de jure, meaning formal legal requirements. Formal standards organizations, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or the American National Standards Institute, are independent of the manufacturers of the goods for which they publish standards. The goals of standardization can be to help with independence of single suppliers (commoditization), compatibility, interoperability, safety, repeatability, or quality. In social sciences, including economics, the idea of standardization is close to the solution for a coordination problem, a situation in which all parties can realize mutual gains, but only by making mutually consistent decisions. Standardization is defined as best technical application consentual wisdom inclusive of processes for selection in making appropriate choices for ratification coupled with consistent decisions for maintaining obtained standards. The ISO 14000 is a standard for environmental management systems that is applicable to any business, regardless of size, location or income. The aim of the standard is to reduce the environmental footprint of a business and to decrease the pollution and waste a business produces. The most recent version of ISO 14001 was released in 2004 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which has representation from committees all over the world. The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment. Environmental standards is a set of quality conditions that are to be adhared or maintained for a particular environmental component and function. the different environmental activities have different concerns and therefore different standards. The text provides a general overview of why and how the international system elaborates environmental obligations and monitors compliance with them. Second, it discusses the relationship between international obligations and national and local law, with particular reference to federal systems. It indicates another interrelationship, pointing out the influence national law has on the emergence of international law as well as the growing role of international norms in the development and enforcement of national and local environmental policies. Finally, it examines the extent to which environmental protection should be and is taken into account in other regulatory frameworks, from trade law and human rights to disarmament and refugee policy. The basic knowledge provided in this text should allow the reader to undertake further research on topics of environmental regulation at the international level and to understand the implications of international environmental law for national law and policy. In social sciences, including economics, the idea of standardization is close to the solution for a coordination problem, a situation in which all parties can realize mutual gains, but only by making mutually consistent decisions. In almost all fields in european environmental law, the use of standards and thresholds is commonly practiced. Therefore a selection is necessary, and the topic will be discussed with particular reference to the more European influenced Emission Control Law and the typical national sector of Soil Protection Law. European standardisation offers great potential to advance the protection of our environment.

THE SUSTAINABILITY ENDEAVOR IN TERMS OF THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE APPROACH VERSUS PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE

Author(s): Pınar Başar / Language(s): English Issue: 38/2018

Sustainability is examined in an integrated system as the ‘Triple Bottom Line’. Sustainability approach aims to examine corporates in terms of their interdependency with the environment in which they operate. Corporate social responsibility ensures both the social and also environmental continuance according to the Triple Bottom Line. Accordingly, the management is supposed to supply environmental compliance. The level of success that corporates achieve tends to be influenced by various factors such as their stature, general public, purchasers as well as investors’ confidence. They require “triple win” planning as well as alliance both of which meet the coveted triple bottom line of sustainable development. In addition, eco-efficiency is an issue that cannot be ignored during the process in which sustainability is regarded as the main target. Last but not least, corporates are also expected to collaborate with nongovernmental organizations in terms of their environmental performance.

Climate Classification and Drought Analysis of Mersin

Climate Classification and Drought Analysis of Mersin

Author(s): Mehmet Ali Çelik,Ali Ekber Gülersoy / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2018

Studies show that the southern regions of Turkey, within which also Mersin is located, would be greatly affected by possible climate change. According to a report published by NASA, the most severe droughts of the last 900 years are being witnessed in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin. In this context, the study of the drought of Mersin in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin is of great importance. In this study, the drought analysis on, and the Thornthwaite climate classification for Mersin and the surrounding area was carried out (1965-2014). The Standardized Rainfall Index (SPI), Normal Percentage Index (PNI) and Erinç Drought Index were used in our study. Drought analyses on monthly, annual and seasonal scales were carried out. According to the Erinç drought index, extreme climatic conditions have been experienced frequently over the past 15 years. For example, the results of the SPI analysis show that there was a lack of precipitation in Mersin across all months of the year 2008. Again, 2009 became the driest year of the last 55 years. After 1968, the years 2001 and 2012 represent the most humid climatic conditions in Mersin. However there is a significant negative trend, especially throughout the winter months. 2001 and 2012 have been the most humid periods in recent years. If the monthly SPI values of these periods have been examined, it can be seen that the humidity of 2001 originated from heavy rainfalls which had occurred in December. The precipitation which fell in December 2001 was the highest rainfalls the last 55 years. Another drought index used in our study is PNI. The PNI was calculated using monthly rainfall data of 1965-2014 belonging to the Mersin station. It is seen that PNI results were consistent with those obtained from Erinç and SPI models. The year 2008 is recorded as being arid according to the PNI analysis. According to the PNI analysis, the year 2008 was observably arid while moist conditions for the year 2012 are worthy of note.

In recent years, the use of rust has been introduced into the design world after being noticed that the rust spot could be transformed into an artistic technique. Designers have gone to seek natural materials and has begun to create original designs as the result of the harmful effects of chemical dyes to environment and human health became apparent. Among this techniques, ecological printing is a process of creating a pattern on the surface by using natural materials such as plants and rusty metals. While the use of rust printing, being one the ecological printing techniques, has been gaining steam in the world, it is still in its early stage in our country. In this study, the use of rust in design world and the results of the present experimental study were presented.

AMERIGO VESPUCCI VERSUS CLAUDE LÉVI-STRAUSS: WHO IS THE BEST SEA WORLD ANTHROPOLOGIST?

AMERIGO VESPUCCI VERSUS CLAUDE LÉVI-STRAUSS: WHO IS THE BEST SEA WORLD ANTHROPOLOGIST?

Author(s): Fazıla Derya Agış / Language(s): English Issue: 42/2018

Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) wrote letters for depicting his four sea voyages to the Americas, thus ‘the New World’: he talked about the primitiveness of the natives, the animals specific to the region, and the plants that were used as foods or medicines by the natives in his letters to traders, politicians, family members, and navigators. Besides, Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009) talked about different natives from some tropical regions in his work entitled Tristes tropiques (1955; A World on the Wane); moreover, he wrote Le Totémisme aujourd’hui (1962; Totemism) and Mythologiques in four volumes: Le Cru et le cuit (1964; The Raw and the Cooked), Du miel aux cendres (1966; From Honey to Ashes), L’Origine des manières de table (1968; The Origin of Table Manners), and L’Homme nu (1971; The Naked Man). As Vespucci depicted naked natives, their lack of a legal system, cures, totems, and eating habits as well as the status of native women in their societies, just like Lévi-Strauss, he might seem to have influenced Lévi-Strauss and the formation of structural anthropology. Consequently, this paper will compare Vespucci’s sixteenth century popular ethnographic descriptions to Lévi-Strauss’s twentieth century structural anthropological analyses.
