Physical and chemical characteristics of water infusions of flints are measured and analyzed: рН, the oxidation-reduction potential, the specific electric conductivity, and the content of silicon in the solution. The рН in solutions of water infusions of flints stays within the range of the values of this parameter approved by the normative documents for waters of drinking purposes. The values of oxidation-reduction potentials of water infusions of flints are positive and make from > 300 to < 500 mV, which shouldn’t cause any change in the oxidation-reduction potentials of the internal environment of an organism, and curative properties of these infusions can’t be connected with the Eh parameter. The content of water-soluble mineral connections and of the easily acquired orthosilicon acid in flints is very insignificant; water infusions of flints can’t change the osmotic pressure of biological liquids and be considered as essential sources of silicon for a human body.

Thanks to such hegemonic discourses as reducing dependence on foreign energy, accelerating economic development or ensuring cheap electricity production, which were employed to create consent in society, thermal power plants have become widespread in Turkey. Of late, environmental movements have emerged against these thermal power plants that threaten human health, the environment, living spaces, and nature. This study examines “the Çırpılar Movement” in Çanakkale, one of the anti-coal power plants movements that have emerged as a result of Turkey’s neoliberal energy policies. The data for this study is obtained through unstructured interviews and qualitative data collection method. Interviews were conducted with 22 interviewees from various environmental groups and organizations, including Kazdağı Natural and Cultural Assets Protection Association, Troy Environmental Association, Ida Solidarity Association, Çanakkale Agricultural Chamber, TEMA Foundation and villagers from Yenice, Çanakkale between 2-5 July 2018. Based on the data retrieved from these interviews, the goals, strategies, and discourses of the participants are analyzed under three main themes: “human health”, “environment” and “economic effectiveness”. Drawing on the works of Antonio Gramsci, this study argues that the Çırpılar anti-coal movement is a counter-hegemonic movement, supported and sustained by common consciousness, values and anti-hegemonic discourses articulated by organic intellectuals.

İklim Değişikliğinin Güvenlikleştirilmesine Suriye İç Savaşı Bağlamında Eleştirel Bir Bakış

İklim Değişikliğinin Güvenlikleştirilmesine Suriye İç Savaşı Bağlamında Eleştirel Bir Bakış

Author(s): Ahmet Conker / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 04/2020

There have been numbers of academic studies that connect the Syrian civil war with climate change. According to this view, the Syrian civil war is yet another example of how climate change may trigger and exacerbate armed conflicts. This approach's main argument is that the long-standing drought in Syria is a consequence of the climate change that led to mass domestic migration and triggered the uprising. The study aims to analyse how the securitising elites portrayed climate change as a threat by exemplifying the Syrian civil war and by showing why such securitisation is problematic. This paper argues that the securitisation of climate change is problematic, owing to the following reasons. First, the causality between climate change and its role in the erupt of the Syrian uprising is still debated. Second, it overshadows the incompetence and the responsibility of the Baath Regime. Third, the weak spots between climate change and the civil war give climate change deniers to make counterarguments

The environment, which is the living space for all living beings, also contains the resources necessary for their survival. Because not all of the resources are renewable and the renewable ones are exposure to a consumption higher than their renewal rate, the natural sources face the risk of extinction. Another danger for natural sources arises from the waste generated while consumption or production activities. Leaving wastes to the environment without control or disposal of the wastes with a harmful method causes serious effects on the environment. For this reason, the process from the production to disposal of the waste must be managed sensitively. Sustainable environment will be possible if the waste management is also sustainable. The United Nations, one of the most important actors of the international environmental management, dwelled on the sustainable waste management subject in the final declaration of the Rio+20 Sustainable Development Conference, named “The Future We Want”. Also the sustainable waste management was ranked as one of the Sustainable Development Goals, determined in 2015. Due to the importance of waste management, subject of this study is the waste management of the metropolitan municipalities in Turkey. Strategic plans of the four metropolitan municipalities, which are decided on their population density criteria, were examined within the scope of waste management. The goals of the metropolitan municipalities will be found out from the strategic plans and the achievement levels of them will be monitored through their annual activity reports. Also, the reasons of the unachieved goals will be analysed with MAXQDA Analytics Pro qualitative data analysis software. The study aims to reveal how the waste management issue is handled, how much of the goals are achieved and how the unachieved goals are justified by the metropolitan municipalities.

Climate change is the major pressing environmental topic in the world. This article’s primary concern is to illuminate, investigate, and verify the aesthetics of climate change, focusing on the fragile world of disappearing ice, especially the apace melting glaciers in the world. By closely observing the ice changes, tracks, and trails, the aesthetics of ice formation, transformation, and vanishing ice in different corners of the world leave us further evidence of the effects of melting ice. Currently, many people are concerned and affected by the vast spread of the contagious virus around the world. Nonetheless, extreme weather and climate change are what we should worry about most since such irreversible phenomena can devastate millions of people’s lives instantly. The lack of initiatives, efforts and ignorance behaviours of country leaders’ in the climate change resolution directly expose us to these threats, unprotected. This visual research affirms the importance of glaciers. It showcases the irreversible effects and the aesthetics of vanishing glaciers and icebergs’— a world of shrinking ice sheets we have never encountered before.

Game is one of the important methods that support the development of children for centuries and can contribute to their learning easily. Early ages are the periods when children are most open to learning. Researches show that games play a big role in child development. This indicates that the game method can be used as an educational tool in education. From this point of view, it is understood that the game method and relevant tools can also be used to raise environmental awareness as it can be used in all fields. The game design increases the interest and motivation in raising awareness and provides the memorability of what is learned. This study examines the contribution of game design to raising environmental awareness. Accordingly, an example of computer-aided game was developed to raise environmental awareness in individuals in their early childhood period based on the data obtained. The data and form of game design were produced by the researchers. Based on the data obtained in the process of study, solution recommendations were developed for the researchers who will conduct a similar study in a way that they can follow when designing a game and adapt the game to older age groups.

Faces and Surfaces in the Landscape of Pasolini’s ‘Palestina’

Faces and Surfaces in the Landscape of Pasolini’s ‘Palestina’

Author(s): Işıl Baysan Serim / Language(s): English Issue: 10/2020

Hardly known that Pier Paolo Pasolini has created a landscape trilogy through the location-hunting documentaries in his oeuvre. The first of these works is also the one that comprises the spine of this essay, Sopralluoghi in Palestina (Locations in Palestine, 1963), the second one is Appunti per un film sull’India (Notes for a Film on India, 1968), and finally, Appunti per un’Orestiade Africana (Notes for an African Oresteia, 1969/70). The use of historically and culturally layered landscapes from varying perspectives makes his documentaries a “territorial assemblage” in which any number of things or pieces of things has gathered. Following the footprints of Pier Paolo Pasolini, this article aims to explore the film, namely Sopralluoghi in Palestina (Locations in Palestine, 1963) and to present different articulation of space, landscape, territory and place. Particularly, the narrative information, pure observation and his self-experience of landscape are spliced together in mythical as well as historical shots which have been incandescently defined by his poetic realism. Film, indeed, not only does enable to mediate some Deleuzoguattarian concepts penetrating from philosophy to cinema, but also does open new paths for “thinking differently” on the complexity of space. This article, by delving into the real-time shots of the film will problematize the spatial-temporal dimensions are involved in the cartography formed by heterogeneous forces or/and multiplicities defined by “zones of indiscernibility” in the landscape. In this way, I target to reveal its diagrammatic formation which provide the viewer thinking through words and images, nature and culture, faces and surfaces.

Bir Flaneuse Yolculuğu Olarak ‘İşe Yarar Bir Şey

Bir Flaneuse Yolculuğu Olarak ‘İşe Yarar Bir Şey

Author(s): Müberra Mızıkacı / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 11/2021

This work has been prepared in flaneus to represent the feminine gaze of the protagonist Leyla in the movie Something Useful (Pelin Esmer, 2017). The concept of Flaneur has a masculine identity and was theorized by the German literary critic Walter Benjamin, inspired by the poems of the French poet, Charles Baudelaire. The concept refers to the urban, intellectual, observant individual of the modernization of 19th century Europe and the mass culture brought with it. Although the masculine figure, as an individual who can make critical reading of the period through the streets, has this privilege for a long time, the cultural and economic transformations of the 20th century have purified the privilege of the city traveler from a single gender. The concept of Flaneus represents the power of language that stretches patriarchal patterns. In many areas of art, flaneus interpretations have increased this view by exceeding the urban and critical-minded masculine figure theorized by Benjamin. The art of cinema is also suitable for versatile reading, and in this respect, it has a dynamic that reproduces and renews itself in every viewing. With this perspective, in the analysis of the movie Something Useful, the journey and observations of the protagonist Leyla will be evaluated as a modern flaneuse reading, and it will be tried to capture how the train journey reflects the spirit of the age from the eyes of a woman, observing the crowds and watching people in cities and metropolis.

Zastosowanie metody ankietowej w badaniach fizycznogeograficznych: kwantyfikacja kulturowych świadczeń ekosystemowych w gminie Kowal

Author(s): Daniel Przybyszewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 19/2020

The main purpose of the article is to determine the value of the survey method in physical and geographical research. Whereas the subordinate goal – an attempt to explore cultural ecosystem services. The research covered the Kowal commune, located in the south-eastern part of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The main goal was achieved by testing and determining the degree of usability of the survey method in the study of cultural ecosystem services. The conducted social survey concerned opinions on the values of the natural environment and recreational value in the municipality of Kowal. These values define the groups and classes of specific cultural services. When analyzing the results obtained from questionnaires, an assessment was made of the selection of respondents in terms of their relationship with the region and refer to their responses about the state of the environment of the area. The use of the questionnaire method in research and quantification of cultural services is the most frequently used method, which gives good opportunities for assessing and impact on the environment.

Measuring the Impact of Inbound Tourists, Outbound Tourists and Overall Tourism Growth on Sustainable Ecological Footprint of ASEAN Countries: A Panel Data Analysis

Measuring the Impact of Inbound Tourists, Outbound Tourists and Overall Tourism Growth on Sustainable Ecological Footprint of ASEAN Countries: A Panel Data Analysis

Author(s): Khunanan Sukpasjaroen,Thitinan Chankoson / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

The tourism industry is one of the most rapidly developing industries in the world and tourism in the Southeast Asian region has been developing in the past few years. The present study focuses on the data from the ASEAN region to study the association among the variables; inbound tourists, outbound tourists, tourism growth and ecological footprint. The period between 1995-2019 was the subject of study. The data for these indicators was extracted from the WDI. The econometric tools of heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, unit root, cross-sectional dependence were applied in order to evaluate different dimensions of the data. In the estimation of regressors the panel corrected standard error and the one step system of generalized method of moments were used. The results of the estimations reveal that the effects of the regressors were significant. However, inbound tourism and tourism growth showed negative associations with the ecological footprints of the study units. The past and present studies show that the increase in the tourist activities decrease the ecological footprint and thereby increase the environmental quality of the economies. The present study is original and poses major contributions to the academic literature and also has policy making implications.

ZNACZENIE FUNDUSZY EKOLOGICZNYCH DLA BEZPIECZEŃSTWA INWESTYCJI W OCHRONĘ ŚRODOWISKA

Author(s): Ewa ZYSNARSKA / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2006

The aim of this article is to estimate the sources of financing the protection of natural environment in Poland. The process of globalization of the economy results in increased interest in global responsibility. The institutions which implement the idea of sustainable development require an effective collaboration of financing ecological investments. In Poland coexist for example ISPA (Instrument for Structural Policies for Pre-accession), SAPARD (Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rual Development), PHARE (Poland Hungary: Assistance to Restructuring their Economics), Global Environmental Facility, Danish Cooperation for Eastern Europe and the new EEA Financial Mechanisms – environment. However, the Polish system of environmental protection is based on the national, provincial, district and communal funds of environmental protection and water management. Ecological funds play an important role in the financing of environmental protection in Poland. They cover up to 20–25% of all investments in the field.

Sharing (Out) Democracy. On the Democratic Injunction for Climate Justice

Sharing (Out) Democracy. On the Democratic Injunction for Climate Justice

Author(s): Aleksander Kopka / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2020

In my paper, I offer a synthesis of several approaches to the question of democracy and interpretations of the notion of sharing (out). By gathering the voices of such thinkers as Luce Irigaray, Jacques Derrida, and Jean-Luc Nancy, I argue that truly democratic policies must be thought in terms of sharing (out) and inspired by an insaturable justice. However, as I evidence, democracy cannot be considered apart from the question of climate crisis or our relations to non-human others and the natural environment. Eventually, I come to the conclusion that what those vibrant voices have in common is an emphasis on the question of responsibility for other living beings, affirmation of the singularity of every living being, and deep distrust of capitalist imperialism.

Vatic Environmentalism: Orphic Aesthetics and Ecological Justice

Author(s): Leo Courbot / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2020

Founded on readings in quantum theory, poststructuralist philosophy, and world literatures, this article argues that an Orphic tradition can be traced over the last two thousand years, translating a history of human response to the environment which has contributed to the poetic formulation of an ecological ethics that we propose to call vatic environmentalism.

Two Problems in Scientific Cognitivism

Two Problems in Scientific Cognitivism

Author(s): Yan Li / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2020

I try to interpret the notion of “scientific cognitivism” that can be found in Allen Carlson’s works. I argue first that, contrary to Carlson’s view, scientific knowledge does not play a necessary role in the aesthetic appreciation of nature but may even be detrimental to it. Mark Twain’s aesthetic experience from the perspective of a practical level is exemplary. I argue scientific cognitivism has no plausibility in the appreciation of nature. I then analyze an inappropriate sense of scientific cognitivism in the aesthetic appreciation of nature on a theoretical level, including Kant’s theory and other environmental philosophers such as Hepburn, Zangwill, and Berleant. In conclusion, I claim that scientific cognitivism enables inappropriate aesthetic appreciations of nature.

ÜLKELERİN ÇEVRE PERFORMANSLARININ CODAS ve TOPSIS YÖNTEMLERİ İLE ÖLÇÜLMESİ: G7 GRUBU ÜLKELERİ ÖRNEĞİ

Author(s): Furkan Fahri Altintas / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 59/2021

With the awareness of their environmental performance, countries can provide strategies and policies to improve their environmental performance. Thus, countries can contribute to their own economic development by increasing their environmental performance. Therefore, measuring the environmental performance of countries is of great importance. Environmental performance of countries can be measured by the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). EPI consists of two factors, environmental health and ecosystem vitality. Its factors are environmental protection components, and environmental protection components are environmental protection variables. In this context, the research has two purposes. The first of these, To measure the latest and up-to-date environmental performances of the G7 group countries for 2018, using CODAS and TOPSIS multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) over the values of EPI components. The second is to determine which MCDM method can be used to explain the EPI values of countries the most. According to the findings, the ranking of countries' environmental performance with the CODAS method was determined as England, France, Japan, Germany, Canada, Italy and the USA. According to the TOPSIS method, this ranking was determined as England, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy and the USA. According to another finding, it has been observed that there is a significant, positive and very high relationship between the EPI values of the countries and the values measured by the CODAS and TOPSIS methods. According to this result, it was evaluated that EPI can be explained by both methods. In addition, it has been concluded that the correlation value between TOPSIS values of EPI within the scope of the research is higher than the CODAS method, so it can be explained better with the TOPSIS method compared to the EPI CODAS method. In the literature, in order not to find a study measuring the environmental performance of countries with CODAS and TOPSIS methods, it was evaluated that the study in question contributed to the literature, since the findings obtained as a result of the research became a data set for future studies.

The Environmentalist Movement in the World and Environmental Studies in the Marketing Literature

The Environmentalist Movement in the World and Environmental Studies in the Marketing Literature

Author(s): Bilge Nur Öztürk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Problems such as environmental pollution, the depletion of the ozone layer, the melting of glaciers due to global warming, the decline in clean resources and the extinction of some species have prompted people to consider the idea of a more sustainable world. In this process, humanity is going through a mental transformation and gaining some awareness. As emphasized in this study, all crises (accidents, fires, outbreaks, etc.) experienced worldwide have been the driving forces for environmental transformations. Environmentalist movements emerging from this orientation have also found their place in the world of science and therefore in the marketing literature. From this point of view, the aim of this study is to explain the scientific publications inspired by the environmental transformations experienced chronologically and to reveal the part that is present in the marketing literature. In this study, it has been shown with which intensity environmental studies have been included in the marketing literature. In addition, it was determined which marketing journals were discussed intensely. This study points to potential academic fields of study. Finally, this study emphasizes that while trying to explain green consumer profiles, attention should be paid to macro factors (lifestyle, sociological variables, etc.) in addition to micro factors such as values and norms. National and corporate green policies can be more successful if handled in this context.
