Връзка между лидерство и благополучие на работното място – доказателства от Европейското социално изследване

Author(s): Elena Koulova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Subjective and emotional well-being attracts the attention of Bulgarian and foreign authors who focus on various research approaches. In the context of the complex conceptual nature of well-being, the role of leadership as a factor in employee satisfaction in work teams stands out. In this article, the relationship between specific leadership approaches and well being at work will be surveyed in 10 European countries – Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Finland, France, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary. The analysis confirms that there is a relationship between employee satisfaction and a) support from managers regarding the balance between work and personal commitments and b) managers’ willingness to give work-related help or advice, if needed. Leadership with understanding of employees’ need for balance in their lives has been shown to be a significant predictor of well-being. Work related professional help and advice also correlates positively with satisfaction at work. A lot of studies confirm that higher levels of work-related well-being are associated with greater labor productivity. The present analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the significant role of leaders at different management levels in achieving organizational goals through successful models of interaction with employees. The study of leadership and its relationship to employee well-being provides new opportunities for successful management practices.

The last one, participates in supervision partly, for the others there is no such activity. Regarding the interventions related to children and youth with disabilities, there is professional differentiation outside of Bulgaria. A clinical aspect of supervision emerges. These circumstances raise the question of whether a general approach to supervision affects these professionals equally and in the same extent. The answer reveals the significant circumstances and points out the aspects and influence of supervision to the specialists from the fields - education and social services, who work with children and youth people with disabilities.

MREŽNA SOCIJALNA PODRŠKA PORODICAMA NESTALIH OSOBA U BOSNI I HERCEGOVINI

Author(s): Jagoda P. Petrović,Olivera N. Grbić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 23/2021

Of the 31,196 persons missing due to the war in BiH (1992-1995), 6,126 families are still awaiting information on the fate of their 6,586 members (ICRC, 2019). The social inclusion of these families depends on the quality of social support. Social support is understood as helping people in difficult life situations and it also includes an individual’s belief that they are cared for and loved, respected and valued, and that they belong to a network of communications and mutual obligations (Cobb, 1976). This research examined the perception of family members of missing persons about social support within the available social networks. The initial assumption that families of missing persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina perceive a significant level of social support within primary social networks and a low level of social support within secondary and tertiary social networks was confirmed by the use of mixed research design. The survey method, using a questionnaire on a sample of 200 representatives of families of missing persons, was combined with the method of focus group interview, carried out with members of the missing persons association. Methodological triangulation of quantitative data on the size and frequency of occurrence and qualitative information from the perspective of participants, provided a detailed insight into the researched phenomenon, greater validity of the obtained data and thus creating a complete picture of the researched problem. According to the results of the quantitative part of the research, families of the missing with an above-average score of 4.6 (mostly help) highly value the level of social support within primary social networks, with an below-average score of 2.3 (do not help) indicate a low level of social support through the secondary social network. That is, they believe that the competent institutions do not help them, while with a score of 3.3 (mostly they do not help) they indicate that social support through tertiary social networks is slightly below average. Qualitative results of a focus group interview are complementary to quantitative results. The conclusion is that the family remains the strongest pillar of social support, along with relatives, neighbors and friends, while associations of families of the missing somewhat compensate for the lack of support from secondary social networks. Based on that, it is recommended to strengthen support within secondary social networks by applying network social work, psychological crisis interventions and supervision. Using the existing resources of microsocial networks, network social work should favor the role of institutional networks and improve the support of associations for (self)help. The application of psychological crisis interventions and supervision for professionals who work with family members of missing persons aims to develop their abilities to overcome stressful situations and readiness for professional and personal advancement.

In the context of the pandemic, in which the online environment became the main channel used in the process of communication, the information sent by the online media about the experiences of people in general and of disabled people in particular gained greater importance. In this regard, the purpose of the paper was to, to analyse the representations of disabled people in the online media during the pandemic, in order to raise awareness about the challenges these people had to overcome. The objectives of the research included indenting the types of news reported online about people with disabilities and identifying similarities and differences between Romanian and foreign media channels. The methods used in order to conduct the research was content analysis, while having as an instrument a content analysis grid. The results of the research revealed that both Romanian and foreign media channels focused on describing news about employment, discrimination and maltreatment of the disabled and about public policies. The tendency of the channels was to adopt a negative perspective when reporting news about the disabled, but information with positive valences was found in the case of news which described the disabled as heroes- thus presenting their achievements. Furthermore, compared to Romanian media, in the foreign media more news about people with disabilities was found. Therefore, the paper draws attention to the topics online media chose to focus on in terms of disability and to the problems encountered by the disabled.

The Impact of Children Eating Attitudes toward Body Self-Esteem in Family Context. The Role of Health Professionals in Creating and Improving Eating Habits at Young Ages

Author(s): Beatrice Sarkadi (Măguran),Mona Vintilă / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The family plays a very important role in a child's physical and mental development, and the whole system such as: family, schools, communities, governments, corporations must be aware, involved and committed to protect and improve children's health. The aim of this study is to examine the impact that divorced parents have on eating behavior and in this context we observed the eating attitudes of children with divorced parents. Forming and consolidating healthy eating habits from early ages must be a priority in the present context of continuous rising of obesity, diabetes, heart diseases etc. The implication of health professionals, other than doctors, namely social workers, psychologists is essential in teaching the general population scientific knowledge on the topics of healthy eating habits. We also investigated a specific situation: the attitude towards food of children and adolescents in the family context and the relationship between children's eating behavior and body self-esteem which can be a predictor of general self-esteem at children who are in specific situation, namely have divorced parents. For this purpose, we enrolled students from several schools in the Western part of Romania (N = 722; N (divorced parents = 106) aged 8-16 years. The results did not support that those children who have divorced parents also have a negative attitude towards food but a higher level of satisfaction in family life predicts healthier eating attitudes and also there are a significant statistic data that children eating attitude negatively correlates with body self-esteem. Based on the findings, nutrition education and healthy food environment knowledge, attitude and practice on nutrition, eating behaviors and physical activity among both students and parents should be known not just by medial doctors, but also by health professionals like social workers and health psychologists.

What about the Children? Disparities in the Housing Conditions of Roma and Ethnic Romanian Children

Author(s): Nikki Khanna,Roxana Andreea Marin,Stephen J. Cutler / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

Extending an earlier study that we published in this journal (Khanna, Cutler, Marin, 2021), this research examines the following question: Do the housing conditions of Roma children in Romania differ from the housing characteristics of ethnic Romanian children? If we find that the Roma are disadvantaged, we further ask: Are these conditions due to their ethnicity or to whether they live in a rural area or in an urban area? To examine these questions, we use data publicly available from the University of Minnesota’s Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation. These data – a 10 percent sample from the 2011 Romanian national Census – are useful for our purposes because (1) they are the most recent national data from Romania with the necessary variables, (2) the data set includes 294,328 non-Roma Romanians 17 years of age and younger and 23,817 Roma ages 17 and younger, and (3) these Census data ask about very detailed household characteristics. The data are analyzed using cross-tabulation procedures and presented using percentages and means. On every housing variable examined, Roma children are disadvantaged as compared to ethnic Romanian children; the same finding is true regardless of whether the child lives in a rural or in an urban area. We conclude the article by summarizing specific findings, by discussing the implications of the findings for social workers, and by pointing to additional directions for research.

Educational Needs and Problems of Romanian Children and Teenagers in Foster Care

Author(s): Oana Elena Rădăcină / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

Children and teenagers from foster care centers are faced with a number of educational problems. Poor school results, high absenteeism, or inappropriate class behaviors are often encountered among institutionalized children and teenagers. The present paper aims to highlight their educational context, emphasizing the problems and needs they encounter in the learning process. Sixty-two children and teenagers from 3 Transylvanian foster care centers responded to a questionnaire survey and 36 of them along with 7 social work specialists were interviewed by the students and teaching staff of the Social Work Department in the “Lucian Blaga” University in Sibiu. Results indicate an urgent need for socio-educational measures to counteract the difficulties and meet the educational requirements of the children and teenagers in the foster care system.

Rolul terapiei asistate de animale în dezvoltarea socio-emoţională a copiilor diagnosticaţi cu ADHD

Author(s): Costinela Valentina Gălbinașu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 4/2022

Life with a child with ADHD can be challenging, it can mean a change of direction and meaning. Beyond the problems, however, his needs are no different from those of any other child, whether we are talking about affection, attention, acceptance or integration into the community. All this cannot be replaced by any medicine. Traditional methods of therapy and education are not always effective, therefore alternatives must be found. One of these is complementary therapy, which is as new as old, because although it has been in practice for more than 50 years in the United States and Europe, animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is not yet considered an integral part of psychotherapeutic practice. We can motivate this either by the fact that TAA involves more variables compared to any other traditional therapy (dog, handler etc.) or by the fact that we do not face a lack of sufficient studies in the field.

Susţinerea îngrijitorilor informali ai persoanelor vârstnice dependente, în mediul rural

Author(s): Gabriela Zaharia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 4/2022

Informal care in Romania is one of the most important pillars of the long-term care system. In rural communities, it is a traditional norm to take care of the elderly by a family member. Most informal careers provide care for moral and emotional reasons. But financial difficulties, the risk of losing a job, health problems arising from physical and mental fatigue, social isolation have a strong impact on the sustainability of this activity in the absence of support measures. Although the need for support for informal careers in rural areas is real and justified, social services to support informal care are not in demand, missing or underdeveloped.

Digitalization of European Society: Challenges for Social Work

Author(s): Laurence Fond-Harmant,Anne Philippart,Salim Megherbi,Pascale Pereaux,Mihaela Gavrilă-Ardelean / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Uncertainty, transition, revolution? How, in 10 years, do European policies for the development of digital technologies gradually affect the daily lives of all citizens, including the most socially vulnerable? What are the consequences on social innovation, training, and qualifications required in the professions of social engineering and social work? This article is inspired by the State-of-play of policies and the development of digitalization in Europe developed as part of the DLSI project, Digital Learning in Social Intervention (2021-2024). Co-financed by Erasmus+, a program of the European Union, the DLSI project brings together a consortium of social engineering specialists and social workers, training institutes, university research and professional structures, from 5 partner countries: France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania, and Greece. After presenting the situation in Europe, the article focuses on these 5 countries, then on France to show that a good level of infrastructure is not enough to guarantee access to digital solutions for the entire population in an egalitarian way. It proposes an analysis in terms of challenges so that the social workers who accompany the fight against the digital divide can face the new stakes posed by the dematerialization of services and administrative procedures.

Are Children and Young People in the Residential Social Protection System Prepared for an Independent Life?

Author(s): Beatrice Simona Țimonea,Loredana Marcela Trancă / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The present paper aims to present the results of a qualitative study in which the experiences of ten young people after a period in which they were cared for and protected in a residential placement centre in Romania regarding the activities carried out in order to acquire independent life skills during institutionalization were documented through semi-structured interview, direct observation and document analysis. The findings of the study show that the young participants in the study acquired the skills necessary for an independent life in different ways, depending on their subjective experiences, managing various challenges related to finding a job and housing or ensuring daily living after leaving the residential centre. The results reveal the need to offer services during the protection period in accordance with the needs specific to each individual, but also the need for an emotional relationship between centre staff and beneficiaries, relying on open communication, mutual respect and trust.

Psihosociologia vieţii cotidiene. Despre interacţiunea om-animal

The volume entitled "Psychosociology of everyday life: about human-animal interaction", published at ASE (Academia Publishing House of Economic Studies), Bucharest, in 2020 and coordinated by Professor Octavian Rujoiu, covers a vast topic of interest both for specialists in the social sciences human beings, as well as for pet owners, single people or couples, parents who have adopted a cat or a puppy to become their children's best friend, who may be affected by situations such as maladjustment , bullying, anxiety, depression, neurosis, which increased in the context of online school, ADHD, parents' divorce and the appearance of new partners for parents, etc., and among which, families later noticed an improvement in behavior. The Transition towards an Independent Life of Private Social Services Beneficiaries

The Transition towards an Independent Life of Private Social Services Beneficiaries

Author(s): Loredana- Florentina Cătărău (Bozariu) / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This article is designed to examine the transition of children and young people who come from the private protection system to independent living, both from a theoretical and practical perspective. The work is the result of 13 semi-structured interviews. The aim of the study is to identify how beneficiaries acquire and apply independent living skills during institutionalization and after the protection measure is lifted. The primary target group consists of 8 children and young people (female), aged between 12 and 22, who are under special protection in the "St. Joseph" Family House - a program of the Caritas Iasi Diocesan Center Association. The primary target group also includes two secondary target groups: three specialists and two former beneficiaries. Obtaining the results involved analyzing four essential life skills: social skills, emotional skills, assertiveness skills, and housekeeping skills. The results of the micro-research demonstrate that young people and children who are part of the private protection system acquire independent living skills during institutionalization, but they will experience a smoother transition to self-sufficiency if they have a less challenging family background

YOUTH IN THE BALTIC STATES – LEAVING OR NOT?

YOUTH IN THE BALTIC STATES – LEAVING OR NOT?

Author(s): Mare Leino,Vija Dislere,Odeta Merfeldaitė,Jolanta Pivorienė,Asta Railienė / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

According to statistics, the number of young people aged 15 to 29 in the Baltic States has decreased considerably in the past decade. As this age group is around one sixth of the population in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, this trend is significant, and represents a risk from a demographic, nationality, security, and financial point of view. The population of the Baltic States is currently subject to a higher risk of multidimensional poverty than the populations of other EU countries (Voronov et al., 2020). Moving out of these countries is not forbidden, but in an ideal world young people would return, which is not always the case. As migration processes can be influenced proactively, in this article the authors analyze the situation and consider what could be done to maintain wellbeing, to keep the younger generation in their home countries, and/or to attract them to return. Empirical data comes from secondary data analysis: the authors conducted a content analysis of two published reports. The aim is to focus on wellbeing and social-pedagogical prevention to find answers to two questions: what influences emigration readiness, and can certain activities prevent emigration? As a conclusion of our analysis, the following is stressed: sometimes leaving is a tool for hope/attaining something better – for higher quality of wellbeing, for example; however, some people just want to get away – they leave for the sake of leaving. Both cases may be problematic – a social pedagogical preventive consultation could avoid larger crises. The proactive approach may help to keep younger generations in the home country and/or support their readiness to come back after study abroad.

Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the global and Polish economies

Author(s): Zuzanna Zaporowska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The first part of the article addresses the historical background to, and the practical perspective of, current considerations concerning the future by highlighting the potential changes that will be brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The text attempts to define and expand upon selected economic and social consequences of the pandemic, including the various related arguments, considerations and histories, in connection particularly with the analysis and reflections that emerged immediately following the outbreak of the pandemic. Particular attention is devoted to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the demographic situation, the educational sphere and the labour market. The unfolding crisis has already exerted a lasting structural impact on the global economy with, primarily, short-term financial and economic consequences. The various economic and social consequences for Poland are the same as in other countries. The most significant difference currently concerns differences in terms of regulations following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mediul carceral. Evadarea din închisoare prin suicid. Sinteză de literatură

Author(s): Arpad Mathe / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

Suicide in prison is the result of a complex combination of different elements. The risk determinants of a convicted persons are translated into two parts, factors imported from their liberty or factors acquired in the penitentiary environment as a product of incarceration. The risk factors described are demographic, psychosocial, medical, and criminogenic. This paper makes a literature review dedicated to suicide actions in prison by exposing the risk factors that lead to this event, while making some concrete suggestions regarding the methods of prevention. The research also presents a report analysis made by the National Council of Europe, with other states, on suicide cases and deaths highlighted in Romanian penitentiaries. Method used, was to sort the literature based on the two elements, the risk factors identified prior to arrest and those during detention, analyzing the publications that contained terms with arguments and discussions on suicide riskfactors in prison. The most relevant conclusions appear at suicidal risk factors on a clinical background, criminogenic, and institutional background and at the opposite pole the environmental and educational factors that can hardly be improved. The study also discovers several pro-active strategies for suicide prevention in prison, evaluation during incarceration and during custody, shared accommodation, involvement of the support inmate and family, development of specific programs and other interventions in the work with the prisoner at risk of suicide.

The Prison Environment in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic: Communication of Prisoners with Family Members

Author(s): Elisaveta Drăghici,Simona Nastasia Calu,Elena Valentina Voinea / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

With the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic, penitentiary systems were faced with the problem of ensuring that prisoners could communicate with their families, while restrictive measures had to be applied to combat the spread of the Sars-Cov-2 virus and prevent the illness of prisoners and staff. New approaches to family communication were needed. The present study examines how this function of the penitentiary was carried out and the perceptions of the inmates regarding online communication under the conditions of limiting (in the alert state) and suspending (in the emergency state) visits of family members. The impact on the investigated group of the digital technology used in communication was another point of interest. The empirical research was conducted on a group of 85 (male) prison inmates who completed a questionnaire with closed and open questions. The results of the study show the benefits of communicating online with family (keeping in touch, simultaneous communication with several family members including children, access to images of the home, avoiding illness, etc.) but also the complaints (time allocated to online communication perceived as short, poor internet connection quality, issues related to ensuring privacy of communication, etc.). The pandemic has facilitated the prison's adoption of solutions to ensure communication with family, expanded the use of electronic technology and developed organisational capacity to respond to crisis situations.
