Wymiar funkcjonalny, estetyczny i etyczny architektury współczesnych hospicjów

Wymiar funkcjonalny, estetyczny i etyczny architektury współczesnych hospicjów

Author(s): Mieczysław K. Leniartek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2022

The subject of refl ection is the architecture of a contemporary hospice, which is an expression of social needs, tendencies in palliative medicine, and economic conditions. From the analysis of these objects, a model of a medical unit performing a therapeutic and care function emerges, taking into account the needs of belonging, respect and self-fulfillment of patients. Its program includes personalized hospital rooms, rooms for integrating patients with medical and nursing staff and volunteers, and for meeting the spiritual needs of this community. The special character of this function is emphasized by aesthetic dispositions on a rural and urban, architectural and landscape scale. Often, hospice projects also contain a symbolic message of religious or para-religious content contained in the forms of buildings and their interiors. Considerations on the architectural assumptions of hospices – those special objects in which the act of “transition” crowning human life take place, lead to the conclusion that thanks to the dispositions of a functional, aesthetic and semantic nature, the act of architectural creation acquires an ethical dimension, introducing solutions through logic, aesthetics and symbolism emotional, social, mental and spiritual order.

Faţete ale rezilienţei din perspectiva ştiinţelor sociale

Author(s): Mihaela Tomiță,Roxana Ungureanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

The development or identification of the most efficient models of knowledge, as well as the study of the modes of engagement of the social structures involved in the execution of the act of justice, calls for the establishment of integrative, modular and evolutionary models. These are based both on interdisciplinary knowledge and on changing some mentalities and stimulating innovative and creative ideas. The space of justice in general and the criminal justice in particular, has known a continuous transformation. Criminal justice as a basic pylon in the legal system, uses a series of concepts such as resocialization, reintegration and last but not least, psychological and social rehabilitation of offenders which benefits from a series of transformations due to recognized developments in the field of social and human sciences. Regarding from a legal and social perspective, resilience acquires new approaches and a significant theorization, it being able to include a series of processes and strategies that lead not only to a more efficient restoration of damaged social relationships, but also to an increased capacity of justice with a preventive and recuperative role. Compared to this conceptual construction, we can appreciate that legal resilience connects the classic and traditional axis of justice with the latest developments in the social sciences. Legal resilience thus represents not only a concept, but also an evolving process, respectively a social healing strategy with an integrative approach for all its protagonists. It starts from the premise that not only the victims have suffered as a result of the crime committed, but also the offender himself and the community as a whole. This new approach uses the criminal justice system as a vehicle for resilience.

From Restorative Justice to Restorative Culture

Author(s): Belinda Hopkins / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2015

In its original conception Restorative Justice was an innovative process adopted to address criminal behaviour in such a way as to reduce re-offending and, subsequently, to increase victim satisfaction. In the past 20 years the philosophy, values, principles, skills and applications of restorative justice have been applied in all manner of hitherto unforeseen ways. This paper reflects on the benefits to staff teams themselves of adopting a restorative culture in their own workplaces and the role of their senior managers and leaders in modelling this new way of thinking and behaving. Reference is made to developments in schools, the author’s main area of experience and expertise, and a major source of international inspiration for the growth of other restorative milieus. The lessons learnt in implementing culture change in school settings is being applied more widely as an increasing number of public sector employees in particular learn about what restorative practice can do not only for their daily interactions with clients and service users but also in-house, for themselves as a team.

Is Restorative Justice Appropriate for Domestic Violence Cases?

Author(s): Theo Gavrielides / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2015

The applicability of restorative justice with cases of domestic violence remains to be a grey area of research, policy and practice. In fact, there is a general consensus among feminists that restorative justice is not appropriate for these cases due to the power imbalance that exists between the parties in conflict. This paper aims to test the specific limits of using restorative justice with domestic violence cases. The paper uses data that was collected in 2014-15 through a qualitative, in-depth EU funded study that was conducted in the UK with a sample affected by domestic violence, as well as practitioners. Recommendations are produced for policymakers, social workers, practitioners, educationalists, healthcare professionals and researchers.

Social Services for Elderly People: Quality of Life in Care Facilities during COVID-19

Social Services for Elderly People: Quality of Life in Care Facilities during COVID-19

Author(s): Milena Yorgova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The paper presents the results of the opinions and evaluations of elderly people, users of social services for residential care, regarding the measures applied to control and investigate the COVID-19 infection with a focus on their quality of life in the institutional environment. The research interest has been provoked by the unprecedented restrictive measures introduced in social services with a view to preventing the wide spread of the virus and high mortality. The study was conducted at the home for elderly people in Veliko Tarnovo in September 2022, six months after the cancellation of the emergency epidemiological situation in Bulgaria. The results show that different strategies have been used to deal with the crisis: disinfection, testing, reduction of interaction, isolation, vaccination, etc. The imposed restrictive measures and work practices have ensured the continuity of care and have guaranteed the life safety and health of the elderly users. However, they have negatively affected the latter’s autonomy by cutting off their access to activities that bring satisfaction and meaning to their daily lives, and by limiting their contacts with relatives and friends. Nevertheless, they were satisfied with the characteristics of the inhabited residential environment; they highly evaluated the received timely care and support corresponding to their needs, as well as the access to treatment and health services during the pandemic. A balance has been achieved between safety and subjective well-being, resulting in the preservation of the quality of life of elderly people in the institutional setting.

Trap, Snip, Repeat: Cat Overpopulation and Gendered Labour in a Feral Sterilisation Programme

Trap, Snip, Repeat: Cat Overpopulation and Gendered Labour in a Feral Sterilisation Programme

Author(s): Kirsten L. Grieve,Stephen L. Muzzatti / Language(s): English Issue: Sp. issue/2023

Cat overpopulation in Toronto, Canada, is a serious and growing problem. Small, and frequently isolated, groups of volunteers work in a variety of capacities to help mitigate the large numbers of litters produced by stray and feral cats. One such organisation is Toronto Street Cats. This volunteer group works with the help of the Toronto Humane Society to operate a monthly trap/neuter/release (TNR) programme. Groups of caretakers look after registered feral cat colonies and capture cats of breeding age. Once a month these cats are sterilised, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and microchipped in an evening-long marathon. Volunteers in veterinary medicine (registered veterinary technicians [RVTs], veterinary assistants and veterinarians) comprise the medical staff who provide treatment and perform the assembly-line surgeries. Post-surgery, the cats are taken by the volunteers to a recovery facility and are then released back to their registered colonies, once they have fully recuperated. The volunteers within the caretaker groups are almost exclusively women as are the medical personnel who perform surgery and assist pre- and post-operatively. Informed by ethnographic and secondary source data this article provides a glimpse into the work lives of the women who care for the feral cats living amongst us in Toronto.

Spolupráce sociálního pedagoga a sociálního pracovníka u žáků s poruchami chování

Spolupráce sociálního pedagoga a sociálního pracovníka u žáků s poruchami chování

Author(s): Nikola Adelaida Řandová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2023

Author(s): Michaela Stoilova / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2023

Humanitarni rad religijskih zajednica kao osnova prakse socijalnog zbrinjavanja u Bosni i Hercegovini

Humanitarni rad religijskih zajednica kao osnova prakse socijalnog zbrinjavanja u Bosni i Hercegovini

Author(s): Ljubo Lepir / Language(s): Bosnian,Serbian Issue: 23/2023

The article discusses the contribution of the humanitarian activities of the most represented religious communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to the development of the practice of social care and social support. The influence of the social teachings of the Catholic, Orthodox, and Islamic religious communities, whose ideological foundations are found in the Bible and the Qur'an, is considered. The article provides an overview of the historical conditioning of the practice of social activities of religious communities, with a special focus on the periods when the state's response to the difficulties of citizens' lives was weak and when space was left for religious communities to engage and practice in the areas of protection and support for socially sensitive groups of the population. Solidarity and voluntariness were the ideological foundations, and charity was the mechanism for practicing the social protection function of religious communities in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the past but also today. The article ends with the message that the area of social activism and charitable work of religious communities is an area of better interreligious and interethnic understanding and cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Social protection of persons with disability represents a topic that requires deep analysis of all significant aspects which include social approach, professional support, as well as the needs and capacities of an individual. This paper includes a theoretical framework for understanding social work models with persons with disability, as well as the underpinning critical social work paradigm. The authors used the above-mentioned theoretical framework to conduct the research and find the answer to the research question. Social workers that participated in this research were hand-picked due to their engagement in the health and social institutions that provide residential social care, and work with clients that are capable of actively participating and making decisions on their own during treatment. The method used for data collection in this research was the focus group method and in depth-interviews as a technic. The research findings presented in this paper indicate that traditional models, medical and social models of social work with persons with disability are being used in practice, with some elements of the third model – the embodiment model. The fourth contemporary model that enables the shift in the social work approach from client to person, using the embodiment model has not been recognized by the social workers that contributed to this research. It is also worth mentioning that the elements of the third and fourth social work models with persons with disability have been present in the social workers’ practice. This topic is very much current and requires attention from the science and practice of social work, facing new challenges and at the same time offering new potential directions for research in this social work field.

ПОДКРЕПА ЗА ПРИЕМНОТО СЕМЕЙСТВО В КОНТЕКСТА НА ПРИЛАГАНЕ НА ПРИЕМНАТА ГРИЖА

Author(s): Vyara Tsvetanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2022

The article attempts to outline the nature and importance of foster family support as a temporary environment for raising and educating children at risk. The need for socio-pedagogical and psychological support stems both from the statutory requirements and from the specific critical moments in the interaction in the "foster parents-foster child-biological parents" subsystem. Based on the opinions of experts from the social system and professional foster families, the research provides further arguments for the importance of team support involving state institutions and informal structures. On the one hand, the support ensures a smooth adaptation of the child in a foster environment and creates opportunities for adequate cooperation with him/her, on the other - professionally motivates the foster parents for their socially responsible role.

Bibliometric Analysis of the Global Research Landscape on Healthcare Resilience During Critical Events

Author(s): Yana Us,Neringa Gerulaitienė / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Over the past decade, natural and human-caused disasters have increased in frequency and intensity, resulting in sig- nificant human losses and the widespread deterioration of health. These critical events threaten the healthcare sector, making it challenging to operate safely and continuously. This paper aims to review and assess the international sci- entific landscape on healthcare resilience during critical events. The research was based on scientific documents published in high-quality scientific journals indexed in the Scopus database. The search for relevant documents was conducted by using the keywords ‘critical events, health- care, and resilience’ in the titles, abstracts, and keywords of the articles. The research sample comprises 720 pub- lications in the fields of medicine, psychology, nursing, and health. The study period covers 2000-2023 (to 1 June 2023). This study followed a logical sequence to achieve its research goal. The first stage involved searching for, col- lecting, and pre-processing relevant articles. Next, various bibliometric techniques were used to analyse and visualise the findings. The bibliometric analysis involved the bib- lioshiny and VOSviewer 1.6.16 software toolkit and Scopus analytical tools. In the third stage, the results were integrat- ed, and directions for future research were discussed. The bibliometric analysis reveals a growing trend in research on healthcare resilience during critical events. The find- ings determined that the key themes in the analysed scope of scientific literature are resilience, climate change, and emerging research areas. Furthermore, the research empha- sises the need for further investigation into strengthening healthcare resilience during human-caused critical events such as crime, terrorism, wars, and cyber-attacks, which have been on the rise. The theoretical implications of the pa- per contribute to understanding the patterns and develop- ments in the scientific literature, while the practical impli- cations offer guidance for conducting bibliometric analyses and insights for future research. It should be noted that the findings of this study are limited to data from the Scopus database; future studies should incorporate a broader range of data sources for a more comprehensive analysis.

EMPLOYMENT EFFECTS OF CHILDCARE AVAILABILITY: EVIDENCE FROM EUROPEAN UNION

EMPLOYMENT EFFECTS OF CHILDCARE AVAILABILITY: EVIDENCE FROM EUROPEAN UNION

Author(s): Borbála Szüle / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

There are several factors that contribute to the success of a society. Economic and demographic developments are known as important drivers, while the role of parental employment as a key component is sometimes overlooked. This paper focuses on the effects of childcare availability on female and male employment in the European Union regions. Regional differences may be significant, therefore separate panel regression models (with economic and demographic control variables) are established for regions in old and new member states, and the results are compared across different levels of male and female educational attainment. The findings suggest that there is a considerable difference between old and new members states. The availability of early childhood educational development significantly increases employment both for female and male employees with higher education levels in new members states, while this effect is not significant in old member states. For male employees with relatively low education levels, the availability of early childhood educational development does have a significant effect on employment both in old and new member states but this does not hold for female employees with lower education levels.

QUALITY OF LIVING ASSESSMENT IN RURAL ROMANIA. AN ANALYSIS OF SETTLEMENTS WITH LOW ACCESSIBILITY TO MEDICAL SERVICES

Author(s): Vlad Teodor Berbecar,Radu-Matei Cocheci,Andreea Acasandre,Gener Ismail,Gabriel Mircescu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Several factors contribute to the lower quality of living of post-communist countries like Romania, such as housing quality, access to basic infrastructure or services including healthcare, and low income and education levels. To evaluate to what extent the quality of living is related to social and economic factors, including access to medical services, a field questionnaire was applied to 703 respondents from 8 settlements located in the South-East of Romania. Using the Principal Component Analysis, four determinants were selected to compute a Quality of Living Index (QoLI): sewage, room surface per dweller, dwelling accessibility and fuel use for cooking. The QoLI computed for each respondent varied between 29.7 and 94.8 with a mean value of 58.5. It was directly related to the level of education and income and with several healthcare parameters. The mean value for each Local Administrative Unit was used to establish a ranking, with the commune of Mihail Kogălniceanu (Constanța county) having the highest average QoLI, and the commune of Brăești (Buzău county) having the lowest average QoLI. The QoLI of investigated settlements was in line with the results reported by other studies that assessed the socio-economic development of towns and it can be used as a tool to establish the level of living conditions and to prioritize the need of intervention.

Conceptual Issues of National Security Policy-Making Under Uncertainty

Conceptual Issues of National Security Policy-Making Under Uncertainty

Author(s): Olga Reznikova,Volodymyr Smolianiuk / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (111)/2023

The article examines the nature of the uncertainty impact on the formation and implementation of national security policy. The multiplication of uncertainties and complication of the system of social relations prompt a transformation of conceptual approaches to the identification of the national security basic features and the organization of key processes in this area. It has been proven that the development of the concepts of uncertainty and resilience prompts a reconceptualization of the national security. This process is currently taking place. The implementation of new approaches to ensuring national security contributed to the initiation of a paradigm shift in national security policy. Management of uncertainty allows for reducing its influence on national security policy-making. The development of science and increasing the level of public trust in scientific information, which is taken as a basis for shaping political decisions, are of great importance for this.
