This article presents a scientific literature review of foreign and Lithuanian publications revealing the specifics of women’s homelessness. The concept of homelessness, types of homelessness, general homelessness and the causes why women are becoming homeless are discussed. The peculiarities of women’s homelessness are analyzed, revealing the vulnerability of homeless women and the victimization they experience, and describes the various consequences that homelessness has for physical and mental health. The article also presents a summary of strategies applied by homeless women that help them survive on the street: they involve having an intimate partner as a protector, changing their image according to particular circumstances, strategies of invisibility and breaking the rules of public space as well as using alcohol as a means of reconciliation with homelessness. We discuss the services provided by the Special Help Centers in Lithuania, which are provided for victims of domestic violence, other specialized forms of assistance for women and social assistance measures provided by the Vilnius and Kaunas municipalities to homeless people and social risk persons. Finally, we suggest directions for future empirical research.

Study on the Correlations among Environmental Protective Factor of Resilience, Social Exclusion, and Hope of Disadvantaged Youths

Study on the Correlations among Environmental Protective Factor of Resilience, Social Exclusion, and Hope of Disadvantaged Youths

Author(s): Suh Chen HSIAO / Language(s): English Issue: 74/2021

A needy family is the underprivileged group in the society, in which children and youths growing in a needy family are the most underprivileged group, who have no choice and could not overcome it by themselves. Effects of poverty on children contain malnutrition or disorder, more chronic diseases, higher epidemic disease infection rate, high accident rate, low study preparation, low learning achievement, high social emotion and behavior problems, high risk of domestic violence, and bad parent-child relationship. Discussions about poverty are often related to social exclusion. Some people regard social exclusion as the division of poor people; social exclusion is not simply a result, but a dynamic process; social exclusion is not the result of inequality, but the behavior to separate people and group due to systems. Aiming at disadvantaged youths in southern Taiwan, random sampling is adopted to distribute 450 copies of questionnaire, and 348 valid copies are retrieved, with the retrieval rate 77%. The retrieved questionnaire data are analyzed with statistics software. The research results show significantly negative correlations between environmental protective factor of resilience and social exclusion, remarkably negative correlations between social exclusion and hope, and notably positive correlations between environmental protective factor of resilience and hope. According to the results to propose suggestions, it is expected to provide various environmental factors in the growing process of youths for reinforcing youths’ confidence and cultivate the resilience.

Types of Older Adults ICT Users and the Grey Divide: Attitudes Matter

Types of Older Adults ICT Users and the Grey Divide: Attitudes Matter

Author(s): David Alonso Gonzalez,Sergio D’ANTONIO MACEIRAS,Celia DIAZ CATALAN,Igor SADABA RODRIGUEZ / Language(s): English Issue: 74/2021

In a context where the proportion of older people increases, research related to active aging and digital technologies has generated a wide debate and numerous investigations aiming to implement new public policies. Usually these are based more on “classic” gaps than on the so-called “grey divide”, which focuses on perceptions and attitudes. To capture this dimension, a questionnaire was designed on uses, learning, and ethical, motivational and attitudinal aspects. A field work was carried out aimed at the population of the Autonomous Community of Madrid between 65 and 80 years old, with quotas of age and sex, with a total of 785 cases, with a sampling error of 3.5% for a p=95%. The results indicate that, given the specific uses made by the elderly, they are marked by the ubiquity of the cell phone, which is basically used to communicate, to alleviate loneliness and to stay active. Thus, through a cluster analysis we have been able to elaborate a typology of users according to attitudes and perceptions (grey divide) allowing us to better characterize the levels of technological adoption in a wider set of factors.

In order to prevent this phenomenon, the awareness and consciousness of everyone (society, state) must be increased. The need for social services at home for the elderly, an idea conceived in the education system as a necessity of modern times

The need for social services at home for the elderly, an idea conceived in the education system as a necessity of modern times

Author(s): Brunilda Dervishaj Hoxhaj,Dorina Xhani / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2021

Aging can be considered not only from the perspective of the individual as it is also a phenomenon of the whole population. The role of the family as the main institution of care for the elderly is coming and going, this is related to the loss of family tradition and the embrace of individualistic values offered by today’s modern society. In Albania, the problems of care for the elderly will increase. And this conclusion is reached taking into account the very bad situation of the elderly nowadays. In this context, the number of elderly people receiving care outside the family is increasing significantly, while the residential capacities are the same. This article aims to find out the most preferred services for elderly nowadays, which enable them to continue living in their community, not necessarily by being accommodated in residential services. The working methodology consists of combining qualitative and quantitative analysis based on primary and secondary data, which create the possibility of multidimensional analysis and provide robust conclusions related to the research question. (for quantitative approach)In order to maximize the comparability of the data, the essential conditions of the study were applied in the most similar way possible in all ESS participating countries, (for qualitative approach) consisted of practicing the interview - pre-test - with individuals over the age of 65 in a suburban area of Tirana. Based on interviews conducted and other studies, it turned out that home services are the preferred choice of elders, which enables them to continue living in their family environment. The service can be provided in different environments which include institutions or home environments.

The beginnings of social work in our country had at a strong religious character, materializing, for centuries, around the monasteries. In recent years, priests and lay people of the Romanian Orthodox Church have formed various associations and foundations, many of them with having charity as executive objective. Abandoned children are one of their main concerns.

Research Activities of Students as a Way to Prepare Them for Social Work: Adopting Foreign Experience in Ukraine

Author(s): Oksana Povidaichyk,Olena Vynogradova,Tetiana Pavlyuk,Olha Hrabchak,Iryna Savelchuk,Iryna Demchenko / Language(s): English Issue: 1Sup1/2022

The article outlines some drawbacks of research training for social workers in Ukraine. To improve it, one should consider the main characteristics of such training in West European countries, given that they are exemplary in terms of social security. With the help of differential and comparative-typological analysis, the article singles out methodical aspects which social work training in Ukraine lacks and, therefore, suggests relevant recommendations for enhancing research activities of future social workers. Besides, it proves that the reforming of research training implies diversifying forms of research activities, as well as bringing them together with industrial placements and educational autonomy of students. At the same time, research activities should be a cross-cutting component in the context of applying interactive, information and project-based methods of teaching and learning. The international relevance of the article lies in identifying areas of research and related activities in the leading European countries. This can be a starting point for improving education systems in the post-Soviet countries in which there is a pronounced divergence between instructional, theoretical and research activities within social work training.

PRAKTYKA PRACY SOCJALNEJ JAKO KOMUNIKACJA MIĘDZYKULTUROWA

Author(s): Dorota Wójciak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2021

In this essay I take a look at the theory of intercultural communication. I try to find inspirations for social work practice in the texts of the most important Polish scholars dealing with this topic. I point out that the application potential of research on intercultural communication goes beyond the field of cross-cultural education and aid activities for migrants and national minorities. Referring to Leszek Korporowicz, I consider intercultural space to go beyond the sphere of contacts between people of different national and ethnic identities. This approach allows me to look at the contact between the client and the social worker as a form of intercultural communication.
