Inclusion of People with Disability in the Church Community Life in the Perspective of Disabled Individuals: The Role of the Priest

Author(s): Katarzyna Zielińska-Król,Leon Szot / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

The physical presence of people with disability in the extent of the parish community is basedon two main components: (I) activities undertaken by a priest to organize religious life, including thosefor people with disability, and (II) activities undertaken by people with disability within the parish com-munity. The aim of the article is to answer the question: What is the importance of a priest in the con-text of the presence of people with disability in the church community? The empirical article is basedon results of the nationwide qualitative research that was conducted among people with disabilities(using the FGI group interview; targeted group selection; the participants of the study were people withphysical disabilities, deaf and hearing impaired, blind and visually impaired, and people with intellectualdisabilities). The analysis of the data obtained allows us to put forward the thesis that the inclusion ofpeople with disability in parish life is a consequence of a close, personal relationship with a priest whohas at least basic knowledge of the physical, mental, and sometimes also intellectual capabilities ofa faithful person with disability. The results obtained may constitute a contribution to pastoral discern-ment regarding the factors influencing the presence of people with disability in the Church community.

Childbirth is a major experience, the course and quality of which are crucialfor the mother’s development, her assumption of the maternal role, and forthe child(ren). Every year, tens of thousands of women share their childbirthexperiences in the “Mothers’ Voice” [“Głos Matek”] study conducted by theFoundation for Childbirth with Dignity [Fundacja Rodzić po Ludzku]. Thearticle presents the results of an analyses of these accounts, focusing on verbalviolence directed at women during childbirth by midwives and doctors in Polandin 2021–2022. An examination of the collected material (stories of violence)made it possible to determine who shouted at the women during labour, thelanguage used in these violent statements, and the behaviour of the women thatprovoked such reactions from midwives and doctors. The findings are interpretedthrough, among other things, the lens of Michel Foucault’s theory, comparedwith medical guidelines on the appropriate treatment of women during childbirth, and examined in relation to Polish legislation and WHO guidelines on a positivechildbirth experience.

Inferential analysis of factors influencing the expectation gap in national health insurance: Evidence from South Africa

Author(s): Shenaaz Gani / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Purpose: This study investigates the expectation gap between healthcare users' demands and the South African government's National Health Insurance (NHI) proposal in Tshwane Municipality. Methodology: The research employs a conjoint analysis approach and a market simulator to examine various parameters influencing healthcare users' expectations. A sample of 281 respondents from diverse population groups participated in the study. Results: Findings reveal that healthcare users strongly demand immediate access to medication, consultations, and comprehensive services, and they prefer doctor-led care. The government's NHI proposal lacks specific timeframes for addressing these concerns, leading to uncertainty and dissatisfaction among users. Theoretical contribution: This study contributes to the literature on healthcare policy implementation by highlighting the importance of aligning user expectations with government proposals. It demonstrates the application of conjoint analysis in healthcare policy research. Practical implications: The research suggests that providing precise and detailed information about NHI services and timeframes can help manage healthcare users' expectations. It also emphasizes the need for the government to address specific concerns such as waiting times and service comprehensiveness in the NHI implementation.

MEANING, SATISFACTION, AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN OLDER ADULTHOOD: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ELDERS IN RESIDENTIAL CENTERS AND THOSE LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

Author(s): Florin - Marius VOICU / Language(s): English Issue: 14/2024

Objectives. This study is relevant to understanding the quality of life (QOL) among elderly individuals in Romania. With an increasing aging population, it is crucial to examine the factors contributing to older adults' well-being and life satisfaction. By investigating the connections between the meaning of life, QOL, and life satisfaction, this study sheds light on the subjective experiences and perceptions of elderly individuals residing in private homes and institutions. Material and Methods. The sample included 200 individuals aged sixty or older from Bucharest, evenly distributed between the two groups. Regression analysis, using perceived social support as a mediator and life satisfaction as the dependent variable, utilized the "presence of meaning" subscale from Steger's Meaning in Life Questionnaire. IBM S.P.S.S. software facilitated data analysis, employing Kruskal-Wallis and Pearson correlation tests alongside descriptive statistics. Education, health, children count, and residence's impact on meaning in life were explored. Results. A significant positive influence of "presence of meaning" and "perceived social support" on life satisfaction was found, explaining 44.8% of its variance. Sobel's mediator test confirmed the significant role of perceived social support in mediating the link between the presence of meaning and life satisfaction. Meaning varied significantly across education levels, with higher education correlating with greater meaning. Institutionalized and childless individuals reported lower meaning compared to those at home and with children. Furthermore, positive correlations emerged between meaning and self-rated health and the EQ Index reflecting health preferences. Stronger personal meaning related to better self-rated health and higher EQ Index scores. Conclusions. This study underscores personal meaning's predictive value, the mediating role of perceived social support in life satisfaction, and the influence of education, living situation, children count, and perceived quality of life on meaning perception among older adults. These findings enhance comprehension of factors impacting satisfaction and meaning perception in this demographic group.

Implementing an attachment and sensitivity-based home intervention in a rural area of Eastern Canada

Implementing an attachment and sensitivity-based home intervention in a rural area of Eastern Canada

Author(s): Douglas K. Symons,Sharon E. Clark,George M. Tarabulsy,Erinn Hawkins,Normand Carrey / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

Recent home-based interventions have focused on improving relationships between parents and their young children in measurable ways, but these interventions have not often been implemented in rural areas where there may be greater psychosocial needs. When an attachment theory framework is used and the focus is on parental sensitivity, improvements in parent-child attachment security have been found, and these effects are relatively stronger when families are at high psychosocial risk and the intervention includes direct feedback on parent-child interactions. This paper reviews this literature, describes the development of such a program in a rural area of Eastern Canada, and presents preliminary data on initial families.

Nine key challenges that members of this health profession face within their work were mapped through the analysis of the report on institutional music therapy for residents of nursing homes within the area of Dubrovnik during 2018 and 2019. In order to strengthen this supportive activity, it is necessary to invest a lot more effort, especially to ensure institutional and national support and qualified lifelong education of music therapists. It is necessary for the profession (medical, rehabilitation, music) to recognize music therapy as an independent method in working with various vulnerable groups. This paper tries to contribute to the establishment of music therapy and therapists in this sense, especially in working with the elderly and infirm persons

Každému zvířeti milující domov. Občanská angažovanost zakladatelek útulků pro psy a kočky

Author(s): Adéla Urbanová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 3/2024

This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study focused on thecivic engagement of founders of associations operating dog and cat shelters. The author approaches the topic from the perspective of civil society studies, viewing it through the lens of social movements, utilizing models that analyze the relationship between volunteering and activism, and drawing on the politi-cal theory of animal rights, as developed in the concept of Zoopolis by SueDonaldson and Will Kymlicka (2011). These approaches allow the authorto capture the activist dimension of the shelter founders’ activities and todemonstrate how they challenge the legitimacy of power asymmetry in human-animal relationships. Although the principle of the “consent of the governed”has penetrated the relationship between humans and nature, civil society hasnever included animals or other non-human actors. However, the founders of private shelters treat the animals in their care as unique individuals, as beings with personality and agency who can and are invited to participate indecisions that affect their lives. Viewed in this way, the civic engagement ofshelter founders raises questions about the boundaries of civil society, specifi-cally the possibility of opening civil society to non-human species, even if theyare only taking the first steps.

Summary: Supervision is an integral part of social worker training and practice. Having gone through a turbulent historical past, both denied and accepted, It is now established as a fundamental part part of the work of many professions, especially those in the humanitarian field. This article presents the results of an online survey of 653 social service workers from all regions of Bulgaria. The survey was conducted using Google Forms from 23.07.2024 to 08.08.2024. A correlation analysis of the effect of supervision on professional development and individual topics discussed during supervision was conducted using SPSS 23 statistical software. The themes were extracted from a supervision content questionnaire by Crisp & Cooper (1998). This paper aims to examine supervision and the professional development of social workers and present and outline the significant themes discussed in supervision sessions that relate to supervisees' professional development. The study results indicated that topics such as linking theory to practice, developing practice skills, analyzing successes and failures, discussing performance in work, and structuring supervision sessions had the most significant impact on professional growth. All themes from Crisp and Cooper's questionnaire (Crisp & Cooper, 1998) had significant correlations with social workers' professional development, confirming the need for supervision and discussing these themes during supervision sessions. However, supervision must be a holistic process that includes support, motivation and structured discussions on various topics. Providing quality supervision invests in better social services and higher staff satisfaction and professionalism. The results are essential for supervisors and enhance their ability to support and conduct effective supervision aimed at the professional development of social workers. Social services must respond to the needs and ever-changing demands of the community. To achieve this goal, supervision must, among other functions, be focused on the continuous professional development of staff.

POČECI ORGANIZIRANOG PRIKUPLJANJA ZEKATA U BOSNI I HERCEGOVINI

Author(s): Elvir Duranovć / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 98/2024

Since the time of the third Khalifah, Othman r.a., Islamic scholars classify private property into hidden (gold, silver, merchandise) of which the value is known only to its owner, and the manifest (livestock, agricultural products etc.), the value of which is visible to all. Since that time the state continued collecting the zakat on the manifest/ the visible property and Omer r.a. made it a responsibility of all eligible Muslims to pay the zakat on their hidden property as well. From that time end ever since then only the zakat on hidden property was considered as zakat. Based on the main sources and the published data the author here presents the views of Bosniak ulama, primarily the opinion of Džemaludin Čaušević, which in the period between the two World Wars brought about a system of organised collection of Zakat on hidden property in Bosnia and Herzegovina for charity purpose.

Author(s): Mihaela Tomiță,Roxana Ungureanu,Monica Trusca / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Child protection professionals are exposed to several workplace risks, often leaving them vulnerable for negative outcomes like burnout. Some professionals do well despite exposure to these risks, which could be described as resilience. There are few studies which analyze risk and protective factors of professionals who work in a complex child protection system and who are addressing beneficiaries’ wishes, needs and hopes. Starting from a brief literature review, this article presents the findings of qualitative research conducted in the Timis Directorate of child protection context. Positive and negative factors that support and affect child protection practices emerged from a survey that was conducted through the collaboration of among 47 child protection professionals. Their opinions reveal issues that shouldn’t be neglected. Protective factors among social workers concerned the intrinsic value of the profession and peer-to-peer support and mutual actions within the team. The results of this study could inform the managers of the child protection services about the issues that professionals deal with and how to act in this way. The managers have to support the professional more effectively and avoid the paradoxical risk of forgetting about their own wellbeing.

The Role of Advocacy in Social Work Practice

Author(s): Sebastian Claudiu Ștefani / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

This essay examines the role of advocacy in social work practice from a historical perspective and current orientations in social work practice. In this regard, we conducted a literature review to analyze how the use of this tool was influenced by the different understandings of the social work mission, by the theoretical perspectives that guided the professional practice, and by the trends in the professional practice. The consultation of specialized literature showed that although the mission of social work is defined similarly, the same does not happen with the use of advocacy, which was influenced by different theoretical perspectives, practice trends and public policies. Changes in professional practice over time have also influenced the use of advocacy in social work.

REDUCED SERVICE YEARS FOR RETIREMENT FOR HELPING PROFESSIONALS: MYTH OR POSSIBLE REALITY?

Author(s): Erna Lučić,Arnela Osmanović / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The study titled “Reduced Service Years for Retirement for Helping Professionals: Myth or Possible Reality?” was conducted as part of broader research on professional stress and burnout among helping professionals, integrating both theoretical and empirical approaches. During the theoretical phase, scientific and professional literature was utilized to explore the topics of professional stress and burnout among social workers and other helping professionals in social work. The empirical study sample comprised social workers and other helping professionals (social pedagogues, psychologists, legal professionals, pedagoguespsychologists, a neuropsychiatrist, and a graduate nurse) employed in social welfare centers, other public institutions (mental health centers and the Educational Center), and nongovernmental organizations (Safe House). The survey was conducted on a reference sample of 63 respondents (15 male and 48 female participants) from helping professions in the Tuzla Canton area (Banovići, Kalesija, Lukavac, Srebrenik, Tuzla, and Ţivinice). The study aimed to provide insight into the problems and challenges faced daily by social workers and other helping professionals, with a focus on gaining a more comprehensive understanding of professional stress and burnout in the social work field. THE EMERGENCE OF DIGITAL HUMANITARIAN ACTIONS: THE CASE OF ‘VRATIMO PALČIĆE U PETROVU’ FACEBOOK GROUP

Author(s): Mijo Bežovan,Antonio Karlović,Robert Mihaljinec / Language(s): English Issue: 29/2024

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected interpersonal relationships globally. Furthermore, in 2020, Croatia was hit by devastating earthquakes that triggered a series of humanitarian actions. This paper deals with the ‘Let’s bring the premature babies back to Petrova hospital’ Facebook group and its auctioning model. The auctions were created through cooperation of the Facebook group members and, as such, have not been described in scientific literature. The aim of this paper is to understand what the case can tell us about cooperation in the digital environment and its role in creating digital humanitarian actions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the authors analyze posts published by Facebook group members and interviews conducted with organizers to explain the phenomenon of strengthening the existing connections among participants and undertaking a collective action. This case indicates that digital activism does not necessarily result in pure slacktivism. In point of fact, transparent participation of community members, along with a transparent model, can have tangible effects on society through successful humanitarian actions.
