Summary/Abstract: This essay examines the role of advocacy in social work practice from a historical perspective and current orientations in social work practice. In this regard, we conducted a literature review to analyze how the use of this tool was influenced by the different understandings of the social work mission, by the theoretical perspectives that guided the professional practice, and by the trends in the professional practice. The consultation of specialized literature showed that although the mission of social work is defined similarly, the same does not happen with the use of advocacy, which was influenced by different theoretical perspectives, practice trends and public policies. Changes in professional practice over time have also influenced the use of advocacy in social work.
